Part Apache and part German, artist Marc Antia is a self-taught silversmith that has being making jewelry for decades. When he isn’t masterfully working on new pieces, he travels across the United States to display his work at Native American jewelry and craft shows. Marc has created a following for his elaborate stamped jewelry. He often combines sterling silver and 14k gold to make pendants, rings, and cuffs. Despite the formality presented by his use of gold in Marc’s jewelry, the durability of his pieces is apparent; upon wearing, one immediately knows this is something that can take the abuse of a daily wear. And yet, they are surprisingly lightweight. One well-versed in Native American jewelry might notice that the traditional Navajo stamp style seen in Marc’s jewelry is liken to a fellow Native American artist’s work: Emerson Bill. Vintage Santo Domingo turquoise and shell Jaclas. Great with natural stones/shell from the third quarter of the 20th century, no damage or wear. 23 grams. Approx 5.5" long as shown in the pics. A traditional Pueblo jewelry adornment, a jacla is two loops of heishi that were originally earrings and sometimes fastened to the bottom of a stone necklace as a pendant-like attachment. Jacla is Navajo for “ear string”. The Navajo spelling is the most commonly used version of the word. Jocla is also common but jackla is a phonetic mis-spelling. Although jaclas are attributed to the Rio Grande Pueblo Indians, they were traded with other tribes so have become associated with the Navajo as well. They are seen in vintage photos being worn by members of all southwest tribes, both men and women. In the oldest style necklaces, the jacla is a pair of loop earrings tied onto the necklace.

Very solid for it's size, 18mm wide. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallace’s trading post and collaborated with amazing Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie.
