Early Lee & Mary Weebothee Zuni sterling coral earrings. Unmarked, attributed, circa mid 20th century with no issues. Lee and Mary Weebothee are master Zuni silversmiths and inlay artists from the Zuni Pueblo. Mary unfortunately passed away in 1993. They both made jewelry since the 1940s and Lee has said that they sold to wonderful traders like C.G. Wallace, R. L. Wallace, Joe Tanner and Dude Kirk. They also sold beautiful jewelry to Don and Nita Hoel over the years. Lee was born in 1929 and Mary in 1933. Lee and Mary married in 1949 and started making jewelry together shortly after. Greg Schaaf stated in his book “American indian Jewelry: 1200 Artist Biographies that “they were one of the best husband-wife teams in the history of Zuni jewelry. Lee did most of the silver work while Mary was the stone cutter, which she learned to do from Lees mother, Lula. She is known for her master stone cutting skills which are very unusual because of the rounded edges on the stones. They both then set the stones. They are very well know for their interesting cluster work but they also did other types of work using beautiful high quality stones. The son of a Zuni jeweler, Jacob Haloo, and a Navajo mother, Lolap Haloo, Jake Livingston was born in Pinehaven, NM in 1946. After returning from Vietnam in the early 1970s, where he received three *Purple Heart medals, Livingston first worked as a Navajo tribal policeman. He studied the Zuni style of mosaic inlay with master craftsman Dennis Edaakie and soon began working full time as a jeweler. He has been creating prize winning works of wearable art ever since. Frequently working with his wife Irene, he is the recipient of First Place and Best of Division awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market multiple times and his work is found in Lois Jackas book Navajo Jewelry: A Legacy of Silver and Stone. The exquisite work on this classic reversible pendant features a coral cardinal on one side and a gorgeous red headed bird on the other. Livingston used the stones as a painter would use paint to fashion his images. The cardinal is perched on a branch that is comprised of miniscule segments of jet along with coral and turquoise blossoms that he etched to achieve additional contour. A border of fine stampwork surrounds each bird. The pendant spins within a circular frame of silver. 1950's Leekya Deyuse (1889-1966) Zuni carved bird fetish necklace 30" long, measurements in pics. Purchased from reputable "Brown's Trading Post" 11 years ago with reciept included.“Old Man” Leekya Deyuse – Master Zuni Fetish Carver Leekya Deyuse (Leek-yah Day-you-see), was probably the most well known and one of the finest fetish carvers in the history of Zuni. Born in 1889, Leekya created beautiful fetish necklaces, carved animals (table fetishes) of assorted stones, turquoise figurines and fetishes set in jewelry.Leekya worked for C.G. Wallace, a well know and influential trader at Zuni for 50 years. Leekya had 3 children, Frances, Alice and Sarah. His grandchildren and great grandchildren continue to carve today. Some of them are Delvin, Freddie, and Hayes Leekya and Juana Homer, Patrick Homer and Bernard Homer, Jr. Old Man Leekya died in 1966.

c1960 c-31 Gary Vacit Zuni Knifewing Sterling inlay large bolo tie 38" long, some wear to cord close to the tips. Considerably larger than most you will find.Gary Vacit was the renowned son of Frank Vacit, one of the mot famous silversmiths who worked for C. G. Wallace and was collected by CG Wallace and whose work appears many times in the Sotheby's famous auction catalogue. Gary achieved his own renown. You'll find pictures of work like this in Bell's third "Zuni The Art and the People" book, and in most of the subsequent books as well, and in some of the most famous museums and galleries, such as the Kennedy Museum of Art. Gary worked with his wife, Paulinis Lamy Vacit, but I'm not sure they were collaborating at the time this piece was made. The Bennett would date the piece to mid 50's to mid 60's.
