Peter Madsen Cowboy Bronze Sculpture "Long Arm of the Law" 13/24

Peter Madsen, an a artist from Simi Valley, CA - creates "Long Arm of The Law"<br>Bronze Sculpture 17.5" tall x 19" wide. No damage or wear. It is dated 1991 and<br>is 13/24, weighs 30 pounds. Number 18/24 sold for 5K on ebay on May 3, 2015, so<br>the price is reasonable and realistic. It will be packed and shipped with<br>extreme care.<br><br>Article is from July 11, 1997 Byline: Patricia Hesselbach Daily News Staff<br>Writer`<br><br>``Good Medicine'' sits on top of the table where Peter Madsen sketches in<br>charcoal in his Simi Valley home. The small sculpture, one of many created by<br>Madsen at the height of a prolific artistic career, reminds him of his inner<br>strength and gives him courage to begin a new life. Known for his tightly<br>detailed bronzes depicting the American Indian and the cowboy, Madsen had<br>enjoyed measurable success in his field. An established and recognized artist<br>since 1986, he had received numerous awards. The Westinghouse Corp., the New<br>York Stock Exchange, Robert Duvall and Iron Eyes Cody purchased his work. The<br>Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage put a collection of his bronzes on<br>permanent display. Madsen had nowhere to go but into the ranks of renowned<br>American artists. Then one day in May 1993, an accident completely altered the<br>life Madsen had so meticulously crafted. While enjoying his other great passion,<br>participating in a Western riding competition, the artist was thrown from his<br>horse. He sustained severe head trauma and brain damage. He fell into a deep,<br>three-month coma. Madsen awoke to begin a journey on a new trail, teaching his<br>body to move again. Modest movement in his left leg signaled the onset of his<br>recovery. The artist also uttered his first words since the accident. During a<br>nine-month hospital stay, followed by seven months in a transitional home<br>setting, Madsen started his remarkable re-education process. ``I'm being born<br>again,'' Madsen said, laughing as he recalled his first tremulous attempts to<br>write his ABCs. The sculptor admired for intricate human anatomical application<br>in his bronze figures had to relearn his own body parts. ``When he first began<br>to draw figures, he would leave off a right arm,'' said his wife, Vicki. She<br>said his drawings reflected his reality. He had to become reacquainted with his<br>right side before he could draw a right side. ``The first sign of artwork came<br>in 1996,'' said Vicki Madsen. For months, she had attempted to coax the artist<br>back to work. Each time she presented him with clay, he responded, ``I can't do<br>this right now.'' Then, one September day, a collection of artist friends paid<br>Madsen a visit. Talking about sculpting stirred something inside him. Someone<br>presented Madsen with a small piece of clay. He squeezed it and responded with a<br>huge smile. There is an ironic twist to the Peter Madsen story. Prior to his<br>injury, the artist had been sculpting the figure of a cowboy being thrown from<br>his horse. Four years later, Madsen has returned to work on the piece by way of<br>surrogate sculptor, Jean Cherie. ``He has the eyes and the vision. Jean Cherie<br>is his hands,'' said Vicki. ``Prophesy Fulfilled,'' like the emerging artist, is<br>a work in progress. Once solely dedicated to his realistic bronze work, Madsen<br>now finds creative expression in a more free-form bas-relief style of sculpture,<br>charcoal sketches and computer graphics. His computer generated designs will<br>soon grace greeting cards. Close friend and personal attendant, Patrick Grant,<br>saw the work turned out by Madsen and suggested ``Greetings from Eagle Vision.''<br>Postcards featuring photos of Madsen's bronzes will complement the collection.<br>Seldom is heard a discouraging word from this cowboy artist who pledges to make<br>his own way in life. Back in the saddle again, he is rebuilding weak muscles<br>through a structured therapeutic horseback riding program. When asked about his<br>attitude toward life since the accident, Madsen exuberantly replied, ``Go for<br>it!'' When asked what his former attitude toward life was, he again replied,<br>``Go for it

    1 in stock

Pizzichillo & Gordon 15.5" Studio Art Glass Bowl 7.75" tall No cracks, chips, or restorations.Bruce Pizzichillo and Dari Gordon are internationally known artists who create large, colorful handblown glass vases, sculptural vessels and bowls as well as intriguing glass and mixed media sculptures. Using glassmaking techniques that are thousands of years old, along with many of their own invention, Bruce and Dari melt glass in furnaces that are designed for work in multiple colors. They achieve a palette of distinctive colors by mixing various metallic oxide formulations containing gold, silver, cobalt and others, into the molten glass. They heat the raw materials in large ceramic pots inside a glass furnace at temperatures in excess of 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. As the molten liquid glass achieves a working temperature, the artists gather the fluid substance onto the end of a five foot long steel pipe or rod. They blow, manipulate and shape the mass of molten glass, constantly spinning it and dipping it back into the pot for additional gathers if the piece is exceptionally large. For decoration, they apply shards, frit, bits and strings of colored glass that they have pre-made to the hot surface of the glass, and then reheat the piece to fuse the elements to the surface. When they complete the blowing and shaping process, they remove the piece from the pipe and place it into an annealing oven, where it will cool slowly over a specific period. In general, the larger and thicker the piece, the longer the time required for it to anneal. If not properly annealed, the piece will shatter when exposed to room temperature. Finally, the artists inspect each piece to determine if it meets their standards for first quality. They then proceed with the finishing work, which can include cutting, grinding and polishing before signing the completed piece. Depending on the size and complexity of the piece, the artists may reject half the pieces they make, or more, for lacking the requisites of first quality. Bruce studied at the University of New Mexico and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in glass from the California College of Arts & Crafts, where he studied with world-renowned glass artist Marvin Lipofsky. Bruce has worked with glass since 1976.

Porfirio Salinas (1910–1973) Big Bend Texas/Mexico Landscape South of El Paso.<br>100% guaranteed Original Oil on canvas painted by Porfirio Salinas in the 1960's<br>with no damage or restorations of any kind. Overall: 32 3/4 by 38 3/4 inches<br>24" x 30" painting. Salinas is not as well known for his west Texas/Northern<br>Mexico desert landscaped but he did do some. I'm sure it was more pleasant<br>sitting in a bluebonnet field close to home in the spring then it was sweating<br>in the desert, but a trained eye should be able to see this master's skill and<br>respect his diversity.<br><br>On Oct 18, 2008 a much smaller Porfirio Salinas landscape with a similar terrain<br>was offered for auction by David Dike Fine Art at a $15,000 starting price, I'm<br>unsure if it sold or what it sold for. It was titled "75 Miles South of El<br>Paso", 1953 oil on canvas 16 x 20. So less than half of the size of this<br>painting, it had the same cacti and Red Yucca. In 2019 prickly pear Cacti<br>Landscape by Salinas brough $125,000 with the buyers premium at the same David<br>Dike Fine Art.<br><br>The paper on this frame possibly covers the title of this painting, I'm tempted<br>to remove it but I'm going to try my best not to as the old brittle paper does<br>help date the painting and I really like to leave things as I found them. No<br>damage or restorations whatsoever to the painting, thoroughly examined under<br>both natural and UV light.<br><br>Porfirio Salinas (November 6, 1910 – April 18, 1973) was an early Texas<br>landscape painter who is recognized for his depictions of the Texas Hill Country<br>in the springtime. He was one of the first Mexican American artists to become<br>nationally recognized for his paintings. He was described by The New York Times<br>as being United States President Lyndon B. Johnson's favorite painter. Works by<br>Salinas are displayed in the Texas State Capitol, the Texas Governor's Mansion<br>and in a number of museums including the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas and<br>the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum.<br><br>Early history<br>Salinas was born on November 6, 1910, near Bastrop, Texas. He came from a family<br>of Mexican American tenant farmers, his father Porfirio G. Salinas and his<br>mother Clara G. Chavez Salinas leaving the farm for San Antonio when Porfirio<br>was a child. Salinas was a precocious talent who drew and painted from the time<br>he was a small boy and received encouragement from his teachers. He had little<br>formal education and left school when he was young in order to work in an art<br>supply store. When he was fifteen he met the English-born landscape artist<br>Robert William Wood (1889–1979) at the store.<br><br>Salinas went to work in Wood's studio in 1925, where he learned the basics of<br>being a professional painter. He stretched Wood's canvasses, and learned to<br>frame paintings, how to mix paints and how to prepare canvas under Wood's<br>supervision. Wood was a very capable businessman, and Salinas learned how to<br>sell and market his art from the English painter. Salinas accompanied Wood and<br>the Spanish-born artist and teacher José Arpa (1858–1952) on sketching trips to<br>the hills and valleys surrounding San Antonio where they painted blooming<br>wildflowers in the spring and the Texas Red Oak in the fall. With his talent and<br>hard work he was soon capable of professional work.<br><br>Professional career<br>Salinas began painting professionally in 1930, when he was twenty years old.[4]<br>His early work was influenced by his mentor Robert Wood's paintings.[5] He<br>painted many scenes of Texas bluebonnets, the state flower, which were sold to<br>tourists by the artists and galleries in San Antonio, Texas. In 1939 he began<br>working with the art dealer Dewey Bradford (1896–1985), who sold paintings,<br>frames and art supplies in the state capital of Austin.<br><br>National recognition<br>While Salinas sold his work steadily, by 1960 he was known primarily to Texas<br>collectors and tourists who visited San Antonio. In 1961, this changed rapidly<br>with the election of his collector Lyndon B. Johnson (1908–1973) to the Vice<br>Presidency of the United States. With his ascension from the United States<br>Senate to being Vice President, Johnson and his wife Lady Bird Johnson<br>(1912–2007) purchased a large French-style chateau from the socialite and<br>heiress Perle Mesta (1889–1975). They decorated the house with French antiques<br>and tapestries that were already in the home, but the foyer was hung with Texas<br>wildflower paintings by Salinas. Lady Bird Johnson was quoted as saying, "I want<br>to see them when I open the door, to remind me of where I come from." At the<br>time of the President Kennedy's assassination, Salinas had completed a scene of<br>a horse drinking titled "Rocky Creek" that was meant to be presented to Kennedy<br>during his ill-fated visit to Dallas. Lyndon Johnson told the Washington press<br>that Porfirio Salinas was "his favorite artist." President Johnson also<br>presented a Salinas painting to President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz of Mexico as an<br>official gift from the United States. The patronage of the President was a<br>tremendous boost to the artist's career and during the 1960s, his work sold<br>briskly for ever higher prices. The Johnsons' Salinas paintings remain in the<br>collection of the LBJ Ranch today. President and Lady Bird Johnson were both<br>advocates and admirers of wildflowers. Lady Bird Johnson will always remain<br>linked to the subject of wildflowers because of her "Beautify America" campaign<br>and the Highway Beautification Act, which was passed by the United States<br>Congress in 1965. As part of that effort, many miles of Texas roadsides were<br>seeded with Texas bluebonnets, Lupinus texensis, the flowers that Salinas is<br>known for painting.<br><br>Death and posthumous reputation<br>Salinas was recognized by the city of his birth, Bastrop, Texas in 1960, when he<br>was fifty years old. He had a solo exhibition at the Witte Museum in San Antonio<br>in 1962. His work was widely published by the New York Graphic Society, which<br>added to his national reputation. In 1967 his work illustrated a book titled<br>Bluebonnets and Cactus that was published in Austin.<br><br>Salinas died on April 18, 1973, after a brief illness. He was memorialized in<br>the City of Austin with Porfirio Salinas Day in 1973. Ruth Goddard wrote a book<br>titled Porfirio Salinas that was published two years after his death. There is a<br>Youth Art Exhibition showcasing work by K-12 students, named after the artist,<br>held each year in Bastrop. In celebration of the centennial of Salinas' birth,<br>the Witte Museum mounted an exhibition titled Porfirio Salinas: Painting South<br>Texas that opened on October 16, 2010, and ran to March 20, 2011.<br><br>Artistic production<br>The professional career of Porfirio Salinas stretched to more than forty years.<br>According to the art historian Jeffrey Morseburg, he is estimated to have<br>painted between two and three thousand works. His work is divided among a number<br>of subjects, but Hill Country landscapes of the Texas bluebonnets predominate.<br>The bluebonnet landscape has remained eternally popular with both collectors of<br>historic Texas paintings and contemporary artists. Salinas also painted many<br>scenes of Texas red oak trees in the autumn and prickly pear cactus. There were<br>also scenes of the Texas desert in the Texas Panhandle and of arid West Texas.<br>Salinas made trips to Mexico and painted rural Mexican villages and the<br>volcanoes that are south of Mexico City. For Mexican American audiences, Salinas<br>painted small scenes of bullfights, cockfights and Mexican fandangos.<br><br>Personal life<br>Salinas married Maria Bonillas, a Mexican woman who worked for the Mexican<br>National Railways, in San Antonio in 1943. They had a single child, Christina<br>Maria Salinas, who was born in 1945. Maria Bonillas Salinas helped manage her<br>husband's career. The Salinas home and studio was located at 2723 Buena Vista<br>Street in San Antonio. It consists of a small stone home with a detached studio.

In 1923, Blanchard moved to Burbank, California, where he established a studio for silversmithing.[3] Between the 1930s and 1950, he operated a shop in Hollywood. Preston Monongye (Hopi) (1927-1987) Tufa Cast Rose Gold Channel inlay bracelet

    1 in stock

Preston Monongye (Hopi) (1927-1987) Tufa Cast Rose Gold Channel inlay bracelet. Fits up to a 6 3/8" wrist, tapers from 20mm to 30mm wide. One of a kind bracelet, extremely rare example in gold. Preston Monongye did not work in a lot of gold, very few pieces have come to market ever, when they do they are crazy expensive. I personally had this machine tested on a $30,000+ XRF machine and it ranges from 40-43% gold (Averaging about 10k) which actually makes perfect sense. Since P Monongye didn't work with a lot of gold, the times he did were likely somewhat experimental. In this case it is somewhat obvious that he melted up some scrap gold, likely some that was brought to him by a customer or friend to make this which was likely a custom piece. The lowest gold content shot we took showed it at 48.13% copper, 40.08% gold, 8.18% silver, 3.49% zinc, and .12% Nickel.Preston Monongye (1927-1987) was an influential proponent of what he called “the new Indian art.” He wrote, “We may use old techniques, along with old designs taken from potsherds or pictographs, but then we redesign them or add innovations of our own.”Preston had an unconventional and late blossoming path to jewelry making. He served in two wars, worked in law enforcement, and was an employee for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It was later in life that he decided to dedicate himself full time to jewelry making, which was received numerous awards. He had always experimented with jewelry and craftsmanship, but did not receive acclaim until fully committing to his art. Preston primarily did the metalwork and design for his pieces, letting his friend and acclaimed lapidary artist Lee Yazzie do the inlay, and later allowing his son Jesse Monongye to do his lapidary work. His pieces are exhibited nationwide.Born in East Los Angeles, California, to Mexican and Mission Indian parents, Monongye was adopted by a Hopi family at age seven. He was raised Hopi, speaking the Hopi language and participating in the Katsina Society. At age nine, Monongye began apprenticeship with his uncle, the master silversmith and painter Gene Pooyama. “He taught me how to live the ‘Hopi way,'” Monongye recalled. Throughout his career, Hopi colors and images were prominent in Monongye’s work. But Monongye was adamant that Native jewelry not be bound by the past, explaining, “An old piece of philosophy given to me by my father and other men of the Hopi Mesas is, ‘If you can progress without hurting your tradition or your , you should do so.”Born in 1927, in Los Angeles he was abandoned at Hopi at age seven and adopted by a prominent Hopi family. Monongye attended reservation schools and became a full participant in Hopi and social life. Following his service as a paratrooper in World War II, Monongye became a Kachina painter, working occasionally for trader Roman Hubbell and the Fred Harvey Company. Monongye re-enlisted during the Korean War and later worked in law enforcement for the Bureau of Indian Affairs while continuing to paint and make silver jewelry. After leaving his job in favor of jewelry making in the early 1960s, Monongye quickly became recognized as an innovative designer and technician, immersing himself in “the new Indian art,” using traditional techniques and motifs to create a contemporary new look. He was best known for cast silver set with stones that often were cut by his friend Lee Yazzie, and later by his son Jesse. Monongye taught his art at various schools and workshops and lectured widely on contemporary Native design. He won many awards at shows and competitions and his jewelry appears in museum collections such as the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff and the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe.
