sz8.25 Carmelita and Dan Simplicio Sterling turquoise and coral ring 31mm long 6.2 grams. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallace’s trading post and collaborated with amazing Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie. Throughout his time, he developed an inapt ability to create stunning leaf motifs with intricate stamps and carved details, beginning his signature balance of delicate leaf work and heavy turquoise and coral designs. Started silver work in 1991. He learned silver<br>work by watching his brother Andy, David Donovan was born in 1968 in Gallup, New<br>Mexico USA. He began his silversmith career in 1991. He is Andy Cadman’s brother<br>and Gary and Sunshine Reeves’s half brother. They are all artists who create<br>some of the finest Native American jewelry in the southwest. He, like all of<br>them, creates jewelry in the Navajo revival style.<br><br>His late brother, David Reeves introduced him to this trade, through David he<br>was introduced to Eric Bonecutter of Albuquerque, New Mexico. From the beginning of my training as a metalsmith, I was taught the essentials of jewelry fabrication, but I was never told what to make or how it should look. Luckily having my father as a teacher, renowned lapidary artist, Richard Chavez, the idea of “less is more” was already there. It was an idea so fundamental in my artistic development that excess is still something I shy away from today. All of my metalwork takes into consideration a balance of texture and light. I have found over the years these elements can overwhelm one another, disrupting the aesthetic beauty of a piece. As I evolve as a metalsmith I’ve learned materials such as sterling silver, 14k gold, and semi-precious stones have married well with the abstract approach of my designs. While most of my work consists of non-representational styling, personal life experiences have added a great deal to my creations. It is because of this, the narrative plays such an important role in some of my larger vessels. sz8.5 Leonard and Marian Nez Navajo Sterling and high grade turquoise ring.<br>Beautiful matrix and color on this stone, unsure of mine, 15.6 grams.<br><br>Fine chisel, stamp work and deeply grooved silver overlay are the hallmarks of<br>Leonard Nez’s silver jewelry whose work is featured in the Smithsonian<br>Institute. By combining the elements of the traditional with the contemporary in<br>detailed scrollwork and classic feather styling, Nez’s work is distinct and<br>recognizable.<br><br>Born in Keams Canon, Arizona, Nez met his wife Marian through his sister. It was<br>Marian, a silversmith in her own right, who first taught Nez jewelry-making. In<br>1977, he made his first pieces and by 1993 he began showing his work. Steve comes from a long line of distinguished men and<br>women, whom he names as his influences.<br><br>His great-great grandfather, Hosteen Bele-sle-zo, was among the thousands of<br>Navajo who were forcefully relocated during the Long Walk of 1868. His<br>grandmother, Anna Yellowhorse, was a fine Navajo weaver who married the creative<br>visionary, Arthur Beasley. Together, his grandparents Arthur and Anna built the<br>Navajo Castle, a remarkable adobe building that has since become a tourist stop<br>on Route 66 near Lupton, Arizona.<br><br>Steve’s father, William Beasley, served in WWII before returning to Arizona with<br>his wife, Constance, and taking on the persona of Chief Yellowhorse,<br>entrepreneur and the brains behind Chief Yellowhorse Trading Post at the<br>Arizona-New Mexico border.<br><br>Steve Yellowhorse learned his craft from Kevin Barnhill and Tom Taylor, and has<br>been creating jewelry since the age of 21. Ridges around the rim indicate it was made from a squished coin. <br><br>Tommy Singer (1940 - May 31, 2014) was a World Famous Navajo Silversmith and his distinct style of Indian Jewelry is recognized the world over. Tommy was a silversmith for over 50 years. He learned the art of silversmithing from his father when he was just 7 years old. His Father Tsinnigine Hathali was a Navajo Medicine man. His early works were done in the Silver overlay technique but soon began to feature Turquoise stones. While working with scrap turquoise chips, Tommy pioneered the technique of Chip inlay used by thousands of artists to this day.
