Melanie Kirk-Lente & Michael Lente Recognized as the leading voices of today’s Contemporary Native Jewelry scene, Designers and Goldsmiths Melanie Kirk-Lente and Michael Lente (Isleta Pueblo) command a distinctive presence at the top of collectors’ lists world-wide. The Lentes continue to carry on their well-known family tradition in fine jewelry design, being taught by Melanie’s father, renowned artist Andy Lee Kirk. Constantly striving to combine contemporary elegance with Native American design themes is the driving force that motivates this husband-and-wife team to continually evolve, allowing their designs to actually redefine the art form. Their jewelry design is known for the use of traditional and contemporary materials, such as gold, sterling silver, turquoise, coral, Australian opal, sugilite, and diamonds. Both as collaborators and individuals, the Lentes have amassed an impressive list of top awards and showings at premier venues, including the Santa Fe Indian Market, Eiteljorg Museum, and Heard Museum. Considered by many to be true works of sculptured fine art, their pieces are presented for acquisition in select fine art galleries throughout the United States, including Santa Fe’s premier venue: Legends Santa Fe. The family tradition of creating high-quality, collectible jewelry works was established by Andy Kirk, and extends throughout the family to include Melanie’s uncle Michael Kirk and his family: Cousin Anthony Gatewood, Sister Kimberlee Kirk, and most recently, Michael’s brother Andrew Lente. There are other art mediums constantly explored and expanded on by their family: Metal art by brother Cody Crumbo, and cousin Brandon Jojola, pottery by grandparents, aunts, and Melanie’s mother. The Lentes draw from the rich heritage in Native arts that the entire family shares. Surrounded by their three daughters, Justine, Taylor, and Samantha, inspiration never runs short. Life in their native Isleta Pueblo is ingrained with their Native beliefs and steeped in centuries-old traditions. Participation in pueblo ceremonies remains a priority to their family values. Melanie and Michael share, “Our way of life has been handed down for hundreds of years, and will continue to flourish through the next generation of the Native people.”

sz11.5 Norbert Peshlakai Navajo sterling silver petroglyph modernist ring. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Nice ring with minimal wear. Norbert Peshlakai was born on May 6, 1953, into the Black Sheep clan of the Dine people. Growing up in Crystal, New Mexico, with nine brothers and sisters, his mother is an accomplished weaver and all of his sisters and one brother followed in her footsteps. Norbert began discovering his artistic abilities as a painter in high school, starting with landscapes and abstract portraiture. He enrolled in painting classes at the University of Kansas intending to pursue a career in art. On a whim he decided to take a single jewelry making class, but after making mistakes on his first few class assignments he began to think, “making jewelry must not be my thing.” He started skipping classes, until one day he ran into his teacher on campus. His teacher told him he was failing due to his absences and in order to pass he needed to present his sketchbook, identify 65 necessary tools, and make six pieces of jewelry. Norbert made more than six pieces of jewelry, and passed the examination with ease. As the teacher was photographing all of his students’ end of semester work in class, he motioned for Peshlakai to come over and take a look into the camera. When Norbert saw his jewelry through the lens of the camera something struck him, he reminisced, “I saw my work for the first time.” Norbert continued through college attempting both painting and jewelry, but it was not long before jewelry took over as his passion. The artist sees his jewelry as a combination of painting and sculpture, and credits the sculptural work of John Boomer’s abstract wooden forms as an inspiration for him throughout his career. Norbert makes his own unique stamps from concrete nails to create imaginative, energetic patterns on his spirited shapes and has developed his own style of textures and overlays he is now known for. In the late 1970’s he began making intricately ornamented silver pots, something he was introduced to in college and continues to experiment with today. His work is identified with a hallmark he created in the very beginning of his career consisting of a circle, dot, and v stamp forming the shape of an eye, symbolizing ‘vision.’ Norbert continues to make jewelry and silver pots from his home in Gallup, New Mexico, breathing life into his creative, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Its great to do something that nobody has ever seen before and difficult to duplicate. Look for one of a kind type jewelry. sz10.25 Lloyd Oliver Navajo code talker high grade Nevada turquoise sterling silver ring. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Nice ring from the third quarter of the 20th century. Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. Stone is great, looks like it‘s likely Lone Mountain or another high grade Nevada mine. Oliver was born April 23, 1923, into Bit‘ahnii (Folded Arms Clan), born for Kinlichíi‘nii (Red House Clan). His chei was Naakaii Dine‘é (Mexican People Clan) and his nálí was Tódích‘íi‘nii (Bitter Water Clan). He grew up in Shiprock, where he graduated from Shiprock Agricultural High School in 1941. A year later, at age 19, he enlisted in the Marines and became one of the first of the elite group later named the Navajo Code Talkers. He didn‘t set out to be a hero, said Oliver‘s nephew Lawrence Oliver, whose father Willard also was a code talker. "I was sitting with my dad once and asked him if he knew why Uncle Lloyd enlisted," Lawrence said. "(Willard) said that (Lloyd‘s) girlfriend was mad at him." Willard Oliver died in 2009. Lloyd Oliver served in the Marines until 1945, when he was discharged with the rank of corporal. More than five decades would pass before his family knew how pivotal he had been in winning the war in the Pacific. Like thousands of other GI‘s, Oliver returned to his hometown, married and had a child. Things didn‘t work out, however, and he moved to Phoenix to find work. There he learned silver- and metalsmithing, and developed a distinctive style as a jewelry maker. He supported himself selling his work through Atkinson‘s Trading Post in Scottsdale, Ariz., continuing well into his 70s. Oliver was known for being industrious and self-sufficient. His grandson, Steven Lloyd Oliver, recalls a visit the two made to New York City in 2009, where the code talkers had been invited to take part in the Veteran‘s Day parade.

sz9 Benny Armijo (1937-2022) Navajo Opal ring in sterling silver. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Nice ring from the last quarter of the 20th century. Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. I believe this to be a natural Opal as Benny was very well respected and made this later in his career. He always used really high grade materials even earlier in his career. Benny Armijo (1937-2022). Benny was a renowned master Navajo silversmith who specialized in this complex inlay and "corn row" type cobblestone inlay using high quality stones. His jewelry was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and was collected by many high-profile artists from James Taylor, Charlie Daniels, to Hank Williams Jr. His pieces can be seen on many album covers of top music groups and are highly collectable today. His incredible sense of humor was as well-known as his jewelry. He was simply the most generous man that one could ever imagine, always helping complete strangers he encountered along the way. He was active from the early 70‘s until the late 20th century.. His older mark from the 1970‘s looks like a tadpole and has been misattributed to "Edward Zuni", but I‘m 100% sure this is Benny Armijo‘s work and hallmark, it‘s been confirmed by his living relatives. Benny was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico Benito M Armijo Jr The older stamp he first used was to represent the letter C and letter M which stood for Chief Marcos. Many years later maybe around 1989 he stamped his jewelry with Benny Armijo. He lived in California for many years and returned to New Mexico and passed away January 2022. He was known for his stone inlay on what he called a Hopi wedding band in which all the stones were inlaid inside the ring or bracelet. Giving the thought that the beauty between the couple is in the eye of the beholder and the couple would choose the different color of stones and their meanings to be inlaid on their wedding bands.
