Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) is best known for innovative turquoise and coral settings as well as his impeccable silver work. Dan worked at C.G. Wallace’s trading post and ultimately Wallace became one of the biggest Simplicio collectors. He used branch coral it its natural form, which was unheard of during this time period. He innovated the natural coral and turquoise style of jewelry while simultaneously excelling with his silver work. He was also a master of inlay, which he did only in his formative years of which we have few examples of today. Simplicio worked with silver in a very interesting way, a way that his son credits to his time overseas in WWII. He was influenced by the French, German and Italian use of leaf patterns. Throughout his art classes in school, he always wanted to create the perfect shape. His first career, however, took him into the Forest Industry. He soon realized that he wanted to follow the yearnings of his heart and create beautiful jewelry. He borrowed jewelry tools from his father-in-law and set to work, learning the demanding craft of silversmithing. Richard was immediately drawn to the intricate inlay work, for which he is known for. As he perfected his craft, Richard explored different techniques of inlaying. He was always searching for the best way, the most beautiful setting, the perfect harmony of material and craft. He also developed an eye for choosing the best stones for his inlay. Turquoise and coral are his favorite, but Richard used a wide variety of stones and shells, including malachite, spiny oyster, and pacific coral. Not limited to the usual in anything he did, he also inlaid opals, sugilite, lapis and other exotic stones into his award-winning pieces. The importance of harmony in his work was echoed in his silverwork, especially his pendants. In these pieces, he incorporated important symbols from his culture. Richard also used the Steppe Design found in the wedding baskets and recreates special times, such as the social dances he goes to. Encircling it all is his extraordinary inlay, adding color and life. The beautiful things Richard looked for exist in his creations. Richard passed away in 2013.

1940‘s McCabe 10k gold/hand engraved sterling silver rubies longhorn belt buckle. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with solid 10k gold longhorn. Minimal wear, weight and measurements in pictures. Fits up to a 1.25" belt. McCabe silversmith was founded in Southern California by John McCabe in 1923 -- reaching its apex during the golden age of the Hollywood Cowboy era during the 1930s and 1940s when it shared the spotlight with its more well known competitors like Edward H. Bohlin. In 1931 McCabe was commissioned to construct the finest gold and silver mounted saddle outfit ever created for Ms. Muzic, a wealthy Los Angeles horse woman. That saddle cost over $20,000 during the depths of the depression and took six months to make. It was eventually acquired by Roy Rogers in the early 1950s and went on national display and exhibit as Roy’s calling card. Following McCabe’s death in an auto accident in 1930, the company was sold to Charlie Martinez, a nephew of John’s and its most prominent owner. Charlie expanded the silver line to include bolos, tie slides, saddle trimmings and conchos in addition to their popular ranger and trophy buckle line. Many of McCabe’s designs from 1938-1948 came from the popular and talented Bob Brown. When Martinez died in the late 1940s his widow sold the company and dies in 1960 to Bob Stanton of Sunset Trails.

1970‘s Alice Quam Zuni 14k gold belt buckle carved pyrite turquoise cluster. Tested and guaranteed solid 14k gold. Steel bar to catch the belt. Weight and measurements in pictures, circa third quarter of the 20th century. Fits a 1.5" belt. This is a style that was later adopted by Alice Quam‘s daughter Alvina Quam, though not in gold that I know of. I have seen a few Alice Quam pieces in gold, but not that many even though when she was active gold was 1/7 to 1/130 of the current price. Yes you read that correctly, during much of the time she was active gold was .7% of it‘s current price. The average was probably 1/20 current price. Still gold items by her are extremely rare and were likely custom items as it was always more expensive than silver and not as popular with top Native American artists as it is today. Alice Quam was definitely a top Zuni artist At the time of listing this melts for $8800 just counting the whole thing as gold. The stones are quality American turquoise which would of course be sold by the carat even if they were not carved by Alice Quam or possibly her daughter working under her. The stones are worth more than gold, the swivel on the back can‘t be that heavy. These days you hear a lot of people saying "NOT SCRAP" when referring to machine made gold jewelry, which is ridiculous to me as it‘s all scrap in my eyes. This is Historic Zuni jewelry that would improve the quality of any collection/wardrobe, it‘s not scrap, never will be. But really isn‘t priced at a ridiculous amount over scrap.
