  • Huge Lupe Iule San Felipe Pueblo cast sterling and turquoise cross pendant

Huge Lupe Iule San Felipe Pueblo cast sterling and turquoise cross pendant

    1 in stock

Huge Lupe Iule San Felipe Pueblo cast sterling and turquoise cross pendant, very substantial, one stone with fracture... All stones secure in bezels.. Weight and measurements in pics. Lupe Iule (1916-?) Lupe Iule was born at San Felipe Pueblo and is the wife of Horace Iule who was her mentor. Her favorite designs are crosses. She was an active jeweler between 1937-1975. Horace Iule (1901-1978) was a Zuni artist who made a wide variety of sterling silver and stone pieces, most notably traditional Zuni crosses. Horace worked with his wife Lupe Iule, who was from San Felipe Pueblo. They were married in 1933, and had six children: Ruby, Lupe, Cecilia, Robert, Barney, and Phillip. Cecilia continues in her fathers tradition with the crosses. Cecilia creates her crosses from tiny to huge and uses coral, turquoise, and other gem stones. Horace Iule was taught silversmithing by his father. He made sand-cast items and then embellished them with hammering and die stamping. His children use some of his original casting equipment to continue the Iule cross legacy.

1980‘s Carlos Eagle Navajo sterling turquoise corn row pendant. Weight and measurements in pics. No issues, very substantial piece that I believe was possibly once a belt buckle. "Carlos career as a jeweler began in the 1970s, inspired by his mother, who was an artist of Ottawa/Chippewa descent. He is completely self-taught. Unlike many jewelers, he is both a lapidary and a silversmith, and fabricates all of his jewelry by himself. Nothing is cast or manufactured. He is an Elder in the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, but also considers himself part of Gods Universal Family. His greatest pride comes from his work with animals and caring for the land. ‘I am doubly blessed. I have been able to pursue my passion for art as a career which has enabled me to live the life I have dreamed of. No one could ask for more‘." He‘s been featured in magazines and has adorned celebrities with his amazing pieces. 32" Large Federico Jimenez sterling turquoise slabs necklace

    1 in stock

32" Large Federico Jimenez sterling turquoise slabs necklace 32" long, weight and measurements in pics. This is a very substantial necklace. Federico Jimenez Federico comes from the tiny village of Tututepec, Mexico. When he was 12 years old he accidentally set fire to a nativity set in his village. His family was pressured into sending him to live in the city of Oaxaca. When he returned to Tututepec in his late teens, Federico and his father were repairing the foundation of their home and uncovered a big pot. Inside was a pre-Columbian Mixtec Indian pectoral (a chest ornament) with strands of gold, turquosie and shell that had been secretly buried by his family. Later when he worked for the Anthropological Museum he learned that the village had once been the kingdom of the Mixtecs and his great-grandfather had probably been their chief. During his years in Oaxaca he developed an appreciation for antiques. After finding the pectoral he became interested in collecting antiques and started going village-to-village searching for more. He started collecting jewelry and Indian costumes. A few years later he met his future wife who was with a group of American anthropologists. She said, "If you love me, you‘ll follow me". So he followed her to Los Angeles where he hit all the big swap meets, buying, selling, trading and building his inventory. He also built up a private collection of Mexican jewelry that he claims is now the world‘s largest as it incorporates pieces from contemporary, colonial and pre-Columbian periods. He organizes exhibitions and acquires items for UCLA‘s Museum of Cultural History and the National Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe. He displays many pieces of his jewelry in the Anthropological Museum in Mexico City. Vidal Aragon Santo Domingo sterling turquoise and coral overlay pendant

    1 in stock

Vidal Aragon Santo Domingo sterling turquoise and coral overlay pendant, weight and measurements in pics. Nice older piece circa mid 20th century. From Santo Domingo Pueblo, Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) translated pueblo life into intricate storyteller jewelry. He became internationally renown for his inventive silver and gold overlay designs. His representations of the elements of nature, animals and pueblo life are symbolic of the Indian way. One symbol refers to “everlasting happiness. Other common motifs are animals and the tracks they make and the blessing and nourishment of corn. An expert craftsman, Aragon drew each story strip with his saw blade and soldered it to a textured oxidized underlayer to illuminate the images. He often incorporated a trademark gold disk to represent the sun or moon. Vidal Aragon learned the overlay technique in the 1930s when he was a student at the Santa Fe Indian School. Before inventing the storyteller jewelry, he experimented with tufa casting and other metalworking techniques. He briefly lived in Scottsdale where he honed his skills as a shop smith. He has fond memories of the time he spent learning ballet as a young man in Phoenix. By the early 1940s, Vidal was already being recognized alongside such prominent smiths as Ambrose Roanhorse and Tom Burnsides for his innovative yet classical designs. Aragon found his true calling though when he began to translate his rich sense of the pueblo way of life into wearable stories, often full of his unique humor.

Horace Iule (1901-1978) was an extremely influential silversmith. He became famous in his own right for his Knife-Wing designs and intricate crosses, but then became a silversmith teacher on the Zuni Pueblo, thus inspiring a new generation of artists. He was also able to pass on his talents to his children, most of whom continue to work as jewelers. Horace himself came from a family of silversmiths and was taught primarily by his father. His legacy as a master silversmith lives on through his children, the students he inspired and the exquisite work that he produced.

15" 1940's William Spratling sterling beaded necklace.

    1 in stock

15" 1940‘s William Spratling sterling beaded necklace. Weight and measurements in pics. Who Was William Spratling? William Spratling was born in 1900 in Sonyea, New York. His father was well respected and widely known for his study and writings concerning epilepsy. After the death of both Spratling‘s mother and sister, Wilhelmina, in 1910, Spratling‘s father moved temporarily to his father‘s Alabama home (known as Roamer‘s Roost) with sons William and David as well as older daughter, Lucile. At that time, the three Spratling children became wards of their grandfather. By the end of 1912, the family had moved once more and the children were separated; each went to live with with various aunts and uncles. In 1917 William Spratling attended Auburn University and a year or two later, during his stay at Auburn served as an instructor in architecture. Spratling moved to New Orleans in 1921 where he was an Associate Professor of Architecture at Tulane University. During the following nine years, Spratling published articles in Scribners Magazine, Journal of the A.I.A., Architecture Record, and many other architecture and travel publications. He became an active part of the New Orleans literary colony during those years, and his frequent companions were Natalie Scott, Sherwood Anderson, Oliver La Farge, Frans Blom, John Dos Passos and William Faulkner. Faulkner lived with Spratling for a time, and together they wrote and published Sherwood Anderson and Other Famous Creoles in 1926. 1926 was also when Spratling visited Mexico for the first time. He returned for summers over the next several years, and in 1929, moved to Mexico. Spratling quickly was introduced to and became a welcome participant in the artistic circles of Mexico. His activities in promoting the art of Diego Rivera among New York galleries led to his participation in the first exhibition of Mexican arts held in the United States. The exhibit was funded by the Carnegie Institute and opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Spratling assisted in assembling the exhibit and also lent a number of his own pieces. During this same period, Spratling was working on drawings for the expanding Morrow home in Cuernavaca. Many of these drawings were included in the book written by Elizabeth Morrow, Casa Mañana. Dwight Morrow, the US Ambassador to Mexico, suggested to Spratling in 1931 that Taxco had been the site of silver mines for centuries, but Taxco had never been considered a location where jewelry and objects of silver were designed and made. Subsequently, Spratling hired an experienced goldsmith from Iguala who moved to Taxco and created silver jewelry of Spratlings design. Other craftsmen joined Spratling‘s shop and produced tin ware, copper items, textiles and furniture - all designed by Spratling. These earliest designs were based on pre-Columbian motifs as well as simple themes utilizing rope borders, strap designs and other such basic ideas. The enterprise grew far beyond Spratlings expectations! Because he had created an apprentice system of training young silversmiths many new talented artisans had an opportunity to develop their craft. Over time many of these artisans opened shops of their own all with Spratlings support. During the Second World War, U.S. department stores were unable to import merchandise from Europe, and many retail stores purchased luxury goods in Mexico. In order to meet this dramatic increase in demand, Spratling opened his company to private investors, and by the end of 1944 had lost control of his company. Early in 1946, Spratling y Artesanos was out of business. By this time, Spratling had moved to a ranch he had earlier purchased south of Taxco at Taxco-el-Viejo. He never again lived within the town of Taxco. In 1946, he was asked by the U.S. Department of the Interior to develop a plan for development of native crafts in Alaska, and in 1949, a group of 7 young men from Alaska arrived at Spratling‘s ranch at Taxco-el-Viejo and began their training. Spratling had designed and produced 200 models for that effort, but after the men completed their training and returned to Alaska, the program languished primarily due to lack of government funding. The actual benefits of the program (both for Alaskans and for Spratling) were never realized. The time, however, that Spratling spent studying Alaskan native cultures and visiting all parts of Alaska created great impact as seen in Spratling‘s later silver designs. His design ethic in 1949 was dramatically different from those designs of the 1930s until mid 1940. He also used new materials in combination with silver for many of these later designs. Spratling continued to rebuild his business and had silversmiths fabricating his jewelry and object designs at his ranch. His designs were also produced by the Conquistador Company in Mexico City for a couple of years. Spratling published More Human Than Divine in 1960 and his archaeological interests not only continued but by the early 1960s seemed to take precedence over the creation of new silver designs. He donated collections of his pre-Columbian materials to the National University of Mexico and the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. Spratling has been called by many "a Renaissance Man." Throughout Mexico he is acknowledged as "The Father of Mexican Silver." Certainly the town of Taxco and its economy would be vastly different without the initiative and creativity of this man. He complemented its valuable historic past with a new vitality and spirit which recognized the importance of the indigenous culture. The artistic and economic foundation he established continues to flourish today. William Spratling was killed on August 7, 1967 in an automobile accident just outside Taxco.
