sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Large Daniel Coriz Kewa high grade turquoise spiny oyster intarsia inlay pendant
Large Daniel Coriz Kewa high grade turquoise spiny oyster intarsia inlay pendant. Nice pendant from the last quarter of the 20th century, no issues. Solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. DANIEL CORIZ KEWA (Santo Domingo Pueblo) Jeweler For Daniel, you get the sense that it is all about doing your best and being there for others. Whether as a father, a son, a grandson, on the council of his tribe, as mayor of Kewa or lieutenant governor of Kewa, or as an artist, Daniel wants to do his best. And for him, his best must honor the best of his family because Daniel is carrying on their traditions, not only of jewelry-making but also of serving the village. Daniel learned the hand-grinding of stones into beads from his mother, Nestoria Coriz. Nestoria was a child herself, only 14, when she started making jewelry. Daniel learned lapidary from his grandfather, Lupe Pena. He grew up with jewelry-making all around him. But he had other responsibilties in his life, too, like taking care of 150 chickens, hogs and sheep. As the oldest he was responsible. His family also pushed him to get an education and for awhile he pursued a degree in electronics. But then he had a son, and strove to meet his new responsibilities by joining the army reserves and studying nursing. Jewelry making paid the way. And kept paying the way. Even as he then sought more responsibilities within the village. In 2007, Daniel became mayor of Kewa and also was on the village council. At 42, he was the youngest man by twenty years to ever be on the council. He served as mayor twice, and then in 2012 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Kewa. The day he was accepted onto the council, he first went to the house of his father, Lupe Pena. Lupe‘s own father, Santiago Pena, had been governor of Kewa five times. Lupe himself had been War Chief four times. Daniel opened the door to Lupe‘s home and was confronted with a room full of the other council members. Across the room, Daniel found the face of his father and focused there, not letting his eyes stray from the strength he saw there as he made his way through the crowd of elders. His father took Daniel‘s face in his hands and said, “You can do this. It wasn‘t fear that made Daniel hesitate as much as wanting to honor and serve, a need to help. Daniel says, "I am always learning. Trying to improve life for the young ones." It‘s the idea of a lasting legacy that seems to drive Daniel the most. Not only in his service to his village, but also in his jewelry. For Daniel, it‘s the thought that something he made will be around when he‘s gone. It‘s the vision of a person‘s eyes lighting up seeing his work. And what we can tell is that it matters to him to make people happy, to help and to make a difference in the lives of others.

Manuel Hoyungowa Hopi Large sterling silver dancer pendant in overlay style. Solid sterling, weight and measurements in pics. Fully functional and attractive vintage piece in good condition with no significant issues, but some expected wear. Manuel Hoyungowa (ca. 19532011) Hopi Tribe was from the village of Hotevilla on Third Mesa and has been an active silversmith at Hopi Pueblo since the 1970s. His hallmark is a strong raincloud. Although he has produced some jewelry with coral and turquoise, more in the style of Navajo work, Hoyungowa is a master silversmith which is evident in his traditional Hopi silver overlay technique jewelry. Hoyungowa actually learned silver overlay technique from Preston Monongye (his uncle and another famous Hopi artisan) and the Institute Of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. More History: The Indian Arts and Crafts Board (a government department) and the Hopi Tribe collaborated on the formation of the Hopi Silvercraft Guild in 1949 and noted Hopi artist Fred Kabotie became the manager. It was then that Hopi overlay jewelry found it acceptance. Hopi overlay technique involves cutting out the desired design in one piece of silver and overlaying that onto another piece that has been incised and oxidized. Polishing is accomplished with steel wool which results in a matte rather than a shiny surface.

sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Large Richard Begay Navajo sterling multistone flush inlay pendant
Laarge Richard Begay Navajo sterling multistone flush inlay pendant. Solid sterling, weight and measurements in pics with no issues. Richard Begay was born and raised in Navajoland, Arizona. Throughout his art classes in school, he always wanted to create the perfect shape. His first career, however, took him into the Forest Industry. He soon realized that he wanted to follow the yearnings of his heart and create beautiful jewelry. He borrowed jewelry tools from his father-in-law and set to work, learning the demanding craft of silversmithing. Richard was immediately drawn to the intricate inlay work, for which he is known for. As he perfected his craft, Richard explored different techniques of inlaying. He was always searching for the best way, the most beautiful setting, the perfect harmony of material and craft. He also developed an eye for choosing the best stones for his inlay. Turquoise and coral are his favorite, but Richard used a wide variety of stones and shells, including malachite, spiny oyster, and pacific coral. Not limited to the usual in anything he did, he also inlaid opals, sugilite, lapis and other exotic stones into his award-winning pieces. The importance of harmony in his work was echoed in his silverwork, especially his pendants. In these pieces, he incorporated important symbols from his culture. Corn was a significant gift to the People by the Creator--it represents life to the Navajo. The Yei-Be-Che is the personal link between the Navajo gods and mortal man. The Bear, one of the four animals given to the first people, embodies power and wisdom. It was provided for protection and guidance, and to ward off evil. Richard also used the Steppe Design found in the wedding baskets and recreates special times, such as the social dances he goes to. Encircling it all is his extraordinary inlay, adding color and life. The beautiful things Richard looked for exist in his creations. Richard passed away in 2013.

Alvin Monte Navajo 14k/sterling pendant. Solid 14k/sterling with no damage or significant wear. Navajo jewelry artist Alvin Monte works in both gold and silver, often making his own stamping tools to create one-of-a-kind designs. Born in Socorro, Monte grew up in Canoncito, New Mexico. Both his parents were well-known silversmiths but Monte didnt pick up the trade until he moved away from home. He is a self-taught silversmith. His inspirations often come from petroglyphs or pueblo designs although the execution of his designs is more symbolic than realistic. The result is a more modern verses traditional design that he likes to embellish with various stones including amethysts and garnets for a lustrous effect. Monte is now teaching his young son, who at age nine shows a talent for silver-smithing, thus elevating another generation of the Montes into the artist world.

After the war, he studied industrial design at the University of Illinois and taught at the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado. Jewelry making Avery began making jewelry in his free time around 1951. He was inspired to create art that he found meaningful, and hoped others would find it meaningful too. Starting the business In 1954, Avery began selling jewelry from a wooden box at summer camps in Kerrville, Texas, where he moved with his wife. He printed his first catalog in 1957 and opened his first store and manufacturing facility in Kerrville in 1967. Designs Avery‘s designs were inspired by his faith, and often included faith-based images like crosses, chalices, doves, and fish. He also designed a pin for the Apollo XII astronauts, and was commissioned by NASA twice more.

sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Vidal Aragon Santo Domingo sterling turquoise and coral overlay pendant
Vidal Aragon Santo Domingo sterling turquoise and coral overlay pendant, weight and measurements in pics. Nice older piece circa mid 20th century. From Santo Domingo Pueblo, Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) translated pueblo life into intricate storyteller jewelry. He became internationally renown for his inventive silver and gold overlay designs. His representations of the elements of nature, animals and pueblo life are symbolic of the Indian way. One symbol refers to “everlasting happiness. Other common motifs are animals and the tracks they make and the blessing and nourishment of corn. An expert craftsman, Aragon drew each story strip with his saw blade and soldered it to a textured oxidized underlayer to illuminate the images. He often incorporated a trademark gold disk to represent the sun or moon. Vidal Aragon learned the overlay technique in the 1930s when he was a student at the Santa Fe Indian School. Before inventing the storyteller jewelry, he experimented with tufa casting and other metalworking techniques. He briefly lived in Scottsdale where he honed his skills as a shop smith. He has fond memories of the time he spent learning ballet as a young man in Phoenix. By the early 1940s, Vidal was already being recognized alongside such prominent smiths as Ambrose Roanhorse and Tom Burnsides for his innovative yet classical designs. Aragon found his true calling though when he began to translate his rich sense of the pueblo way of life into wearable stories, often full of his unique humor.

sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin c1940 Early Matl 930 sterling silver cross pendant
c1940 Early Matl 930 silver cross pendant. Late 30‘s-early 40‘s. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Selling pendant and giving necklace free with it. This isn‘t as big or fancy as some of the later crosses, but I believe it‘s rare if not one of a kind and likely made by Poulat herself. Also known by her jewelry studio name MATL, Matilde Poulat was a Mexican silversmith and jewelry designer. Best known for her exquisite and intricate necklaces, Matilde was an exceptional craftsman, fashioning handset pieces that alternate between opulent and ebullient. Poulats career took off when she launched her studio in 1934. Only a decade later she would set the tone for the rest of the industry, inspiring silversmiths in Mexico, California, and beyond to copy her designs. These pieces have come to be synonymous with the name MATL, even when they arent made by Poulat, often being described as Matl-esque. That said, there is only one Matilde Poulat and her pieces are ultimately un-copyable. Starting as a painter, Matilde brought much of her colorful aesthetic to the jewelry making business, coming up with designs that absolutely pop with fresh colors of the American Southwest and Mexico. Matl pieces were extremely popular during Poulats lifetime, and that demand has only increased as the years have gone by. These pieces of jewelry are considered extremely rare and many dont see the open market, making any upcoming Poulat auctions something to watch out for. Matilde Poulat was a Mexican jeweler and silversmith whose pieces were famed for their ornateness and their color. Best known for the work she did with her own studio, MATL, a Poulat necklace shows two things: perfect knowledge of silversmith craftsmanship and a whimsical, fun side to jewelry that to that point hadnt been explored. That whimsy made MATL an extremely popular brand during her lifetime. It was impossible to get a Poulat piece for many years. Utilizing opal, amethysts, and one-of-a-kind pyramidal designs, Poulat was able to create pieces that had never been thought of, let alone created, before by a jewelry maker. Her practice was continued by her nephew, Ricardo Salas, upon her death in 1960.

Alvin Yellowhorse Navajo sterling sugilite, turquoise cobblestone turtle pendant. No issues, weight and measurements in pics. Just a few miles west of Gallup, NM., nestled among the canyons & hills of the small town of Lupton, AZ., lies the quaint, cozy workshop of the young Navajo artist, Alvin Yellowhorse. Alvin learned the silversmithing trade at an early age from his father, Frank Yellowhorse, and later mastered the techniques of cutting the small turquoise & other colorful stones into precise little pieces in which he assembles into intricate designs inspired by his Anasazi ancestors. This technique is called “Channel Inlay. A style of inlay where all the stones are cut & assembled together first & then ground flush before being highly polished. Alvin is credited for originating another style of inlay called “Corn Row Wave Inlay in which the stones are individually cut & rounded over before setting them into a silver or gold bracelet, pendant, ring, or link bracelet. Corn Row Wave Inlay is much more time consuming as he has to completely finish each stone one at a time before placing them into the gold or silver setting. Alvin creates each piece one at a time . There are no mass production techniques or assembly lines. His designs, although very contemporary, are enriched by the Zuni, Hopi, & Anasazi influences along with his own Navajo heritage. Alvin also receives inspiration from the ancient petroglyphs found along the canyon walls near his workshop. Alvin is forever amazing the jewelry & art galleries with new designs & techniques. Aside from being featured in several high-end galleries, Alvin was recognized by the Smithsonian Magazine in their August 1999 issue, along with Art Book Arizona Magazine doing a profile on his life. Each year Alvin enters his jewelry into the Santa Fe Indian Market competition & has won several Blue Ribbons. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed,

The son of a Zuni jeweler, Jacob Haloo, and a Navajo mother, Lolap Haloo, Jake Livingston was born in Pinehaven, NM in 1946. After returning from Vietnam in the early 1970s, where he received three *Purple Heart medals, Livingston first worked as a Navajo tribal policeman. He studied the Zuni style of mosaic inlay with master craftsman Dennis Edaakie and soon began working full time as a jeweler. He has been creating prize winning works of wearable art ever since. The exquisite work on this classic reversible pendant features a coral cardinal on one side and a gorgeous red headed bird on the other. Livingston used the stones as a painter would use paint to fashion his images. The cardinal is perched on a branch that is comprised of miniscule segments of jet along with coral and turquoise blossoms that he etched to achieve additional contour. A border of fine stampwork surrounds each bird. The pendant spins within a circular frame of silver. The pendant is signed inside the frame with the hallmark “J-I Livingston indicating that Jakes wife Irene collaborated with him on the piece. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed,

I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn‘t an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I‘ve seen thousands of pieces xrf‘d to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women‘s wrist.

sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Karl Heinz Stittgen (1930 - 2023) 18k/Sterling chrysocolla pendant/necklace
Karl Heinz Stittgen (1930 - 2023) 18k/Sterling chrysocolla pendant/necklace. 28" necklace, solid 18k gold slab at the top of the bezel/pendant. I know it didn‘t photograph well due to contrasts and time limitations but it‘s great. No issues, weights and measurements in pics. STITTGEN, Karl Heinz 1930 - 2023 Karl Stittgen emigrated from Germany in the early 1950s and established himself as a prominent jeweller and watchmaker in West Vancouver. His creations soon gained global recognition and consequently he opened additional Stittgen stores in Calgary, New York and San Francisco. In his golden years, he trained many Master Goldsmiths who carry on his traditions and techniques today. Karl Stittgens profound impact on both local and international jewellery design was honoured in 2009, when he received the Creative Achievement Award of Distinction at the 5th annual British Columbia Creative Achievement Awards for Applied Art and Design. Karl was born in Bad Durkheim, Germany, and emigrated to Canada in 1952 at the age of 21. Although trained as a watchmaker, his creative urge led him to try his hand at jewelry making, where he gained the confidence of a loyal clientele drawn to his discerning eye for design. His reputation soon spread globally, and he expanded with stores in Calgary, New York, and San Francisco. Karl‘s loyal clients, recognizing his sense of style, taste, and precision, convinced him to design and furnish the unique homes of a very select few. Karl‘s first wife, Gabrielle Pontoppidan, whom he married in 1961, admired and supported these forays into new areas of creative work. Karl‘s second wife, Nora Sasaki, was a talented artist who complemented his vision and unique creative style. Together, they designed and built an exquisite architectural landmark home, "Halcyon Days," on Pender Island. The home reflected Karl‘s admiration for Frank Lloyd Wright in every detail. Both Karl and Nora took great delight in hosting many different creative people on the island and visitors from all over the world, entertaining them with a feast for all senses in their home. They were also renowned for their generosity towards the artistic community on Pender Island and beyond. Well into his eighties, Karl began working in the new medium of ceramics. His studio was a place where he cultivated imagination and had the incredible self-assurance to traverse new and uncharted territory. To see his creations, free in form but precise in construction, was to be in the presence of genius. Karl‘s childhood was difficult, bereft of encouragement to explore or parental affection and support. This may have forged Karl‘s inner strength and determination to become his own person strong in creative conviction with the courage to try the unthinkable. How else would a person move from being a watchmaker to a celebrated jeweler, to an architectural designer, and finally taking creativity literally back into his hands as an acclaimed ceramicist? Karl‘s creative trajectory was only possible because, as he often mentioned, he left Germany to live in Canada where he felt free to tread new terrain without formal training. In September 2009, Karl received the B.C. Creative Achievement Award of Distinction in Vancouver. He was selected for his "profound and lasting impact on applied art and design in British Columbia" and for a "lifetime of creative vision and innovation." His designs were largely inspired by organic sculptural forms found in nature. His exquisite jewelry received much critical acclaim during what some have called the golden age of design in Vancouver.
