I used to watch
my brother-in-law, and his father make jewelry, they used to give me scrap
silver to work with,” recalls Ernest.

Ernest’s career in jewelry making didn’t really take off until he entered some
rather distinguished pieces into the Navajo Nation Fair and the Gallup
Intertribal Indian Ceremonial. Here, he received many awards and ribbons, which
helped him begin his career as jewelry artist.

Over the years, Ernest has slowly built a reputation for coral and turquoise
cluster work on heavy gauge silver with deep custom-designed stamp work. sz7.5 Steve Wikviya LaRance Hopi Tufa cast ring. No issues.Master Hopi silversmith Steve Wikviya LaRance was born 1958 in Phoenix, Arizona but spent part of his childhood with his grandparents in the Hopi village of Moencopi. At Hopi he learned the traditional Hopi arts and those ceremonial designs are a part of his distinctive tufa cast jewelry today. Steve says "When we create art, we share a piece of ourselves with the world."Steve’s distinctive, tufa-cast jewelry uses traditional Native symbols, like petroglyphs, dragonflies, kachina figures and water signs, in creative contemporary ways. His designs are inspired by historical cast jewelry and other old techniques. After becoming a painter, then a sculptor, he now does jewelry that is beautifully designed and impeccably executed. He gathers the semi-hard volcanic tufa from the Hopi Reservation. "I was able to find the site where Charles Loloma used to get his tufa," he says, happily. It is finer-grained than that found elsewhere. Constantly seeking the best is a signature concept of Steve LaRance and his jewelry. sz7.75 Felicita Eustace (1927-2016) Cochiti pueblo sterling carved turquoise and coral ring 8 grams. Felicita Eustace Felicita was born in 1927 and raised at Cochiti Pueblo. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said. The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. It wasn’t the designs they were talking about, it was the technical aspects of our work: setting stones, welds, engravings and so on. They were the ones who would be selling these items for us, so they would make sure that a certain standard of quality was being met.”All precious metals are tested and guaranteed,

Church Rock is where his father and grandfather are from also; this is where he learned his silversmith trade at the age of thirteen. He attended public high school, which he enjoyed, and after graduating he really got serious with the silversmith trade and earned a living from it. A hallmark of Darrin’s jewelry is how is how precisely each piece is constructed and finished. We call this how “clean” the workmanship is. The stones are evenly set into tight fine silver bezels. There are no sharp edges or other careless craftsmanship. His pieces are obviously the work of an artist who takes no shortcuts and whose care for quality of every piece that leaves his studio is professional and complete. From the simplest single stone pendant to the advance design and crafting of a mulit-stone dragonfly necklace, Darrin’s work reflect the best traditional of Navajo silver work and pride. Sz 6 Paul Livingston Navajo Sterling and turquoise ring, clean with no issues.
26.1 grams.

PAUL LIVINGSTON
Paul Livingston was born in 1954 and has spent his entire life on the Navajo
Church Rock Reservation, where he grew up watching with fascination as his
silversmith Uncle crafted raw metal and
stone into beautiful jewelry. Through trial and error and a great deal of help
from his Uncle, Paul became an accomplished young jewelry maker.

By the time he was twenty-two he was ready to launch himself full time into
silversmithing. Paul Livingstonis an acclaimed Navajo silversmith who favors
substance in his metal work and high-quality, natural stones in all his
settings.

Today, nearly forty years later, Paul is a nationally known and collected
jewelry artist. He is particularly known for a style of jewelry most
silversmiths shy away from a technique known as ‘cluster and row work’ where
multiple tiny stones are used together to form a delicate, colorful designs in
jewelry. Paul is happy to work with the little stones, even the tiny round
“snake eye” ones and is renowned for how exquisitely aligned the stone clusters
and rows of stones are on his pieces.

Even at his age Paul continues to experiment with new jewelry techniques and
design styles. He especially enjoys working unusual textures created on metals
and will often incorporate a new surface
finish or other design application to see if these changes might enhance the
jewelry’s appearance and appeal. Though his forte has always been more
traditional even vintage looking Navajo style jewelry, his
contemporary designs are also in high demand. Paul Livingston creates beautiful
jewelry using stones that aren’t often found in Native American jewelry. Fantastic ring signed David SM Allende. Sz 6.5 1 1/8" face. 14.5 grams. High quality sterling and turquoise ring with no issues. Davíd ínez became one of the most interesting and innovative silversmiths and jewelers in San Miguel de Allende. Today, he is a master of his craft. Watching him work, you can see his confidence in the sureness of his hand, the familiarity with which he handles his tools. "You have to be very relaxed to make jewelry, very comfortable with yourself," he claims. "And you can't be in a hurry."He says he's never sure how a piece will turn out when he starts. He doesn't draw his pieces in advance. His work is all freestyle. "Sometimes I don't have any idea. I put some nice music on and let it guide me."His designs come from his head and his heart. "Most of the time, the stone tells you what it wants to be," he explains. "Then you just have to provide it." The results are fresh, different. People familiar with his work can often look at a case full of jewelry, point to one piece and say "That's a Davíd ínez design."No two pieces are ever exactly alike, though sometimes he'll see a copy of a piece he's made. "If people steal my designs, well, I'm glad to be an inspiration for them. It took me a while to get to that point. I used to get mad. Now, I just make something different."A San Miguel ArtistNow in his 40s, Davíd ínez has found his voice and his art. He lives with his wife Claudia and their daughter, Andrea, 8. He makes his jewelry, shares his skills with others. He now teaches in one-on-one sessions. Most of his students are Americans."First you learn the basics, how to make a clean bezel to hold the stone. You learn to work with sheet, wire, how to solder. But really it's all basic. What's a bracelet? It's a band. What's a ring? It's a band. Then you hammer it, burn it, melt it, stamp it. It's just metal. But the metal becomes alive by what you do to it."From papel mache painter to tinsmith to ditch digger to waiter to silversmith to consummate San Miguel artist, Davíd ínez has lived an adventure and arrived back home.
