Sehr großes thailändisches Sawankhalok-Gewürzglas aus dem 15./16. Jahrhundert mit Deckel. Sehr frühes Stück thailändischer Keramik aus dem 14.-16. Jahrhundert mit Schätzung von 1984. Victor Coochwytewa (1922-2011) Hopi overlay belt buckle . Solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pics. Fully functional, with appropriate wear as shown in the pictures. Victor Coochwytewa began creating exceptional overlay work in 1940, learning from Paul Saufkie. Coochwytewa is credited with the now common practice of texturing the base plate of silver. His work continually evolved and he learned diamond setting. His work earned many prestigious awards: the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum, and the Gallup Inter-Tribal award. Coochwytewa was named an Arizona Indian Living Treasure in 1994. This Purple Heart veteran of WWII returned to jewelry making in 1946 after his discharge. He was the first hopi silversmith to texture the back plate of his pieces which has become a standard in Hopi jewelry. In the 1970s he began working in gold and diamonds, another genre stretching technique that garnished him many awards from the Heard Museum, Santa Fe Indian Market, The Gallup, and many other competitions. Success did not distract Coochwytewa from life as a traditional Hopi. He tended his cornfields every day, reserving afternoons for jewelry, and said that corn was his work and jewelry was his hobby. He probably spent as much time on his religious duties as on his other activities, and was a religious and cultural leader most of his life. He retired from jewelry making in 2006.

Vidal Aragon Santo Domingo sterling turquoise and coral overlay pendant, weight and measurements in pics. Nice older piece circa mid 20th century. From Santo Domingo Pueblo, Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) translated pueblo life into intricate storyteller jewelry. He became internationally renown for his inventive silver and gold overlay designs. His representations of the elements of nature, animals and pueblo life are symbolic of the Indian way. One symbol refers to “everlasting happiness. Other common motifs are animals and the tracks they make and the blessing and nourishment of corn. An expert craftsman, Aragon drew each story strip with his saw blade and soldered it to a textured oxidized underlayer to illuminate the images. He often incorporated a trademark gold disk to represent the sun or moon. Vidal Aragon learned the overlay technique in the 1930s when he was a student at the Santa Fe Indian School. Before inventing the storyteller jewelry, he experimented with tufa casting and other metalworking techniques. He briefly lived in Scottsdale where he honed his skills as a shop smith. He has fond memories of the time he spent learning ballet as a young man in Phoenix. By the early 1940s, Vidal was already being recognized alongside such prominent smiths as Ambrose Roanhorse and Tom Burnsides for his innovative yet classical designs. Aragon found his true calling though when he began to translate his rich sense of the pueblo way of life into wearable stories, often full of his unique humor.

Circa second quarter of the 20th century, In 1931, a group of trading post owners and operators founded the United Indian Traders Association (UITA), a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the authenticity of Native American arts and crafts. B.I. Staples was named the first president of the association. The first offices were at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association hogan on Santa Fe Plaza in Gallup, New Mexico. The UITA‘s stated goals were: 1) to promote improved business practices among Indian traders, arts and crafts dealers, Indians, and all related agencies; 2) to promote, encourage, and protect the manufacture and sale of genuine Indian handmade arts and crafts; and 3) to promote the general welfare of those engaged in the business of Indian trading, as well as the welfare of the Navajo Indians and all other Indians of North America. The UITA addressed issues of importance to traders primarily on the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni reservations. One major concern was whether imitation Native American arts and crafts should be allowed to be sold anywhere on the reservations. Along with lease negotiations with the tribal governments came the issue of whether a trader could dig a private well on the trading post lease site. Taxation was also a major topic. Should traders pay property tax on the reservation to the county or state government? The intersection of tribal, county, state, and national governments on the reservations complicated these questions, and the UITA could and did employ lawyers to help settle the questions.
