c1960 c-31 Carlos Diaz Sterling Modernist H bolo tie 37" long cord, no issues.Carlos Diaz was born in Bogotá, Columbia. At the early ageof 14, he became an apprentice under his uncle who was a Silversmith and quickly fell in love with what would be his life long carreer and passion. After finishing his apprenticeship, Carlos learned the Art of Repousse and Chasing from Parisian Master Silversmith, Gaston Avenel. At 23, Carlos worked in Ecuador for a few years making chalices for the Catholic church and hollowware for the Embassy. In 1953, Carlos came to Tucson and began piecework for local jewelers.In 1958, Carlos opened his own business and a few years later had become incorporated. Carlos graduated from the GIA, Gemological Institute of America, in 1978 and holds a degree in Gemology.After half a Century, Carlos is still creating his own designs using Silver, Gold, Turquoise, Diamonds and a variety of other gemstones. He is also noted for his custom work and along with his silversmiths, produce special hollowware such as Chalices and baby cups. Signed Juan C., Zuni, ca.1955-70 until Juan's death in 1970 then began signing Effie C., Zuni. Nugget, stampwork, sandcast jewelry. Wife of Juan Calavaza, mother of Susie Calavaza, Gloria Jean Garcia, Georgiana Yatsatti, four other children. Taught by her husband. (Schaaf 2003:102) Biography Effie specializes in sandcasting silver and incorporates large stones. Her snake designs are known as her signature style. She began making jewelry in the mid-1950s after learning jewelry making from her husband, Juan Calavaza. Her daughters, Georgiana Yatsattie, Gloria Jean Garcia, and Susie Calavaza, are all jewelers as well. She also has four other children. Effie won an award at the Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, New Mexico. Effie also went all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States of America to obtain full copyright of her art work to stop those from importing fake pieces of her work. Considerably larger than most you will find.Gary Vacit was the renowned son of Frank Vacit, one of the mot famous silversmiths who worked for C. G. Wallace and was collected by CG Wallace and whose work appears many times in the Sotheby's famous auction catalogue. Gary achieved his own renown. You'll find pictures of work like this in Bell's third "Zuni The Art and the People" book, and in most of the subsequent books as well, and in some of the most famous museums and galleries, such as the Kennedy Museum of Art. Gary worked with his wife, Paulinis Lamy Vacit, but I'm not sure they were collaborating at the time this piece was made. The Bennett would date the piece to mid 50's to mid 60's. Mark Chee (1914-1981) Navajo Silver bolo tie with turquoise. Weight in measurements in pics, some bends to original tips to give them character, no other issues.Mark Chee (1914-1981) BiographyNavajo artist, Mark Chee is among the earliest southwest silversmiths. Mark Chee is known for traditional stamp work and high quality stone settings in unusually heavy silver. He was born in Lukachukai, Arizona around 1900 and was sent to government school at Fort Defiance (a United States government practice during that time) from the age of 10 to the 11thgrade. He is the elder brother of Joe Chee. He was active during the 1930s through ‘60s. He specialized in heavy silver in old style designs. He began polishing silver in Julius Gans’ Southwest Art and Crafts shop in Santa Fe for $5.00 a week. He then bought a few tools and used them all his life. He quickly became an accomplished silversmith and was hired as a bench smith at Frank Patania’s Thunderbird Shop and later at Al Packard’s shop on the Santa Fe Plaza. He was also a bench-smith for the Wooden Indian at Embudo, New Mexico. His hallmark is a stamp of a bird with his last name in the body in Gothic print. Attributed to Theodore Edaakie, pins and bolos in this design have surfaced signed, typically later examples. 48.2 gramsTed Edaakie, who began producing in about 1930. Theodore Edaakie, called Ted Edaakie, had work represented in the C.G.Wallace catalog, the Museum of The American Indian Smithsonian Institution, The Museum of New Mexico and The Heard Museum in Arizona. Edaakie won several awards for his work. The C.G. Wallace catalog also reports the sale of two of his roadrunner pins. In the 1930's and 1940's Theodore Edaakie was employed as an artist at C. G. Wallace's Trading Post at Zuni. Mosaic and channel inlay pieces that Theodore made were collected by Wallace and several were sold at the 1975 Sotheby's Auction of Wallace's collection. Auf der Rückseite signiert und auf dem Clip befindet sich der frühe C-31-Stempel, der tendenziell aus den 50er bis frühen 60er Jahren stammt. 31,6 Gramm Gesamtgewicht. Bolo misst 2" x 1 5/8" Die Navajo-Silberschmiedin Louse Platero und ihr Ehemann, Juwelier Ramon Platero, waren wahrscheinlich seit den 1960er Jahren angesehene Künstler. Ihnen wird zugeschrieben, dass sie das Stechpalmenblatt in ihrem Schmuck geschaffen haben. Das handgefertigte Markenzeichen von Louise Platero ist L Platero. GESCHICHTE DES VINTAGE-SCHMUCKS VON MATISSE RENOIR Matisse-Schmuck und Renoir-Schmuck sind zwei separate Linien, die unter demselben Dach untergebracht sind. Sie kamen erstmals Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts auf den Markt. Beide Vintage-Schmucklinien verwendeten massives Kupfer, das in den Jahren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wieder erhältlich war. Einflüsse der Kunst- und Handwerksbewegung Ab den 1890er Jahren und über mehrere Jahrzehnte hinweg beeinflusste die Arts and Crafts-Bewegung verschiedene dekorative Kunststile in den USA, darunter auch die Schmuckherstellung. Die Enthusiasten der Bewegung glaubten an eine starke Verbindung zwischen dem Künstler und ihrem handgefertigten Werk. In erster Linie legten die Kunsthandwerker Wert auf die Verwendung hochwertiger Materialien und funktionaler Designs. Schmuckhersteller wie Matisse Renoir bestanden beispielsweise darauf, massives Kupfer anstelle eines kupferbeschichteten Grundmetalls zu verwenden. Die Kunsthandwerker gingen bei diesem Grundsatz keine Kompromisse ein. Dies galt unabhängig davon, ob sie ein Kupferarmband und passende Ohrringe oder eine auffällige Kupferbrosche und Ohrclips anfertigten. Aufgrund der Fortschritte bei der Metallreinigung konnten Schmuckhersteller auf höherwertige Kupferrohmaterialien zugreifen. Und bessere Kenntnisse über die Eigenschaften von Kupfer ermöglichten es Handwerkern, das Kupfer besser zu manipulieren und komplizierte Designs herzustellen. Insbesondere von Kunsthandwerk inspirierter Schmuck zeigt häufig Naturbilder wie Blätter und Beeren. Eine grüne Emaille-Blattbrosche von Matisse ist ein gutes Beispiel für dieses Naturmotiv. Kreative Inspirationen amerikanischer Mid-Century-Designer Die Arts-and-Crafts-Bewegung hat sicherlich die Schmuckdesigner der 1940er und 1950er Jahre beeinflusst. Viele moderne Designer der Mitte des Jahrhunderts haben Abstraktion und Surrealismus in ihre Stücke integriert. Und zahlreiche Gegenstände weisen Biomorphismus auf, also Formen, die Ähnlichkeit mit organischen Formen haben. Die kräftigen Kupfermotive sprachen zukunftsorientierte Frauen an, die nicht länger den dezenten Schmuck ihrer Mutter oder Großmutter tragen wollten. Für diese Damen waren ein Kupferhalsband, ein Manschettenarmband oder eine Nofretete-Halskette das perfekte Accessoire für einen Abend in der Stadt. Renommierte Modeschmuckhäuser aus der Mitte des Jahrhunderts In den Jahren nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg war Kupfer ein markantes Grundmaterial für verschiedene Schmuckgattungen. Deko-, indianische und modernistische Designs stellten dieses vielseitige Metall prominent zur Schau. Zahlreiche Modeschmuckhersteller sprangen auf den Kupferschmuck-Zug auf und führten jeweils ihre eigene Linie an Schmuckaccessoires ein. Kupfer ist ein äußerst anpassungsfähiges Metall. Es überrascht nicht, dass spezialisierte Kupferschmuckhersteller seine Eigenschaften am besten verstanden haben. Infolgedessen stellten mehrere renommierte Hersteller die meisten der heute erhältlichen Vintage-Schmuckstücke höchster Qualität her. Die Kupferstücke von Matisse Renoir haben einen bemerkenswerten Stammbaum. Darüber hinaus sind Kupferschmuckstücke von Bell Trading Co., Francisco Rebajes und Gret Barkin nach wie vor sehr sammelwürdig. Ursprünge des Kupferschmucks von Matisse Renoir Im Jahr 1945 zog der aus Brooklyn, New York, stammende Jerry Fels nach Kalifornien. Fels war zuvor Kampfpilot im Zweiten Weltkrieg und hatte seine Talente in den Bereichen Design, Malerei und Bildhauerei an der New Yorker National Academy of Design gefördert. Im Jahr 1946 begann ein neuer Schmuckstil die Vereinigten Staaten im Sturm zu erobern, und Fels war einer der Vorreiter. Bei seiner Ankunft in der Gegend von Los Angeles schlossen sich Fels und sein Schwager Kurt Freiler zusammen, um „Renoir of Hollywood“ zu erschaffen. Die Sauteur-Stücke sind weitaus seltener als die Kupferschmuckstücke der Unternehmen. Renoir: Ein Innovator der Schmuckindustrie Renoir war ein Innovator in der Schmuckindustrie. Renoir-Schmuck stand nicht nur an der Spitze einer Revolution im Schmuckstil, sondern zeichnete sich auch durch drei charakteristische Produktoberflächen aus, die ihn von seinen Mitbewerbern abhoben. Die erste Veredelung ist die „Copron“-Beschichtung, die Anlaufen durch Fingerabdrucköle minimiert. Einige Renoir-Schmuckstücke enthalten auch eine korrosionshemmende, glänzende Lackierung, die Fels von einem befreundeten Chemiker der Air Force erhalten hat. Leider hat Fels die Formel nicht zur Kenntnis genommen und die Chemiker des Unternehmens konnten sie nicht erfolgreich nachbilden. Das dritte Ziel schließlich ist der Schatten. Einige modernistische Schmuckhersteller übertrieben ihre gelöteten Kupferspuren, indem sie einen schwarzen Schatteneffekt um den gelöteten Bereich herum hinzufügten. Sammlern, die diese Stücke kaufen, wird empfohlen, den Bereich nicht zu polieren, um den Schatten nicht zu beseitigen. Die Schmuckfabrik in Renoir war außerdem Vorreiter bei drei weiteren Innovationen. Zunächst erledigten erfahrene Maschinisten alle Vorbereitungsarbeiten vor der Produktion. Und Fels und Freiler stellten oft behinderte und Minderheitenarbeiter ein, eine sehr ungewöhnliche Praxis in den 1940er und 1950er Jahren. Curtis Tann von Matisse war ein hoch angesehener afroamerikanischer Emailkünstler seiner Zeit. Matisse Renoir stellt Produktion ein Drei unglückliche Ereignisse führten gemeinsam zum Ende der Schmuckproduktion von Matisse und Renoir. In den frühen 1960er Jahren florierte der Schmuckabsatz und die Unternehmen erweiterten ihre Produktionsanlagen. Dann begann sich der amerikanische Schmuckgeschmack zu ändern und die Nachfrage nach auffälligem geometrischem Schmuck ließ nach. Gleichzeitig führten Matisse und Renoir häufig teure Rechtsverteidigungen gegen billige Nachahmerhersteller durch. Schließlich hatten die Unternehmen ständig Probleme mit einem beliebten (und problematischen) Emaille-Design. Hohe Ausschussquoten führten zu massiven Verlusten, schließlich gingen die beiden Unternehmen 1964 in Konkurs und schlossen.
