Der Zuni-Silberschmied Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) erlernte die Kunst der Schmuckherstellung von seinem Onkel Juan DeDios, einem der ersten Zuni-Silberschmiede. Obwohl dieser Veteran des Zweiten Weltkriegs nur etwa 30 kurze Jahre in der Schmuckherstellung tätig war, sind sein Talent und seine Techniken immer noch anerkannt. From the beginning of my training as a metalsmith, I was taught the essentials of jewelry fabrication, but I was never told what to make or how it should look. Luckily having my father as a teacher, renowned lapidary artist, Richard Chavez, the idea of “less is more” was already there. It was an idea so fundamental in my artistic development that excess is still something I shy away from today. All of my metalwork takes into consideration a balance of texture and light. I have found over the years these elements can overwhelm one another, disrupting the aesthetic beauty of a piece. As I evolve as a metalsmith I’ve learned materials such as sterling silver, 14k gold, and semi-precious stones have married well with the abstract approach of my designs. While most of my work consists of non-representational styling, personal life experiences have added a great deal to my creations. It is because of this, the narrative plays such an important role in some of my larger vessels. Sz 8,5 Vintage Steve Yellowhorse Navajo Sterling und Spinnennetz-Türkis-Ring. 16,2 Gramm ohne Probleme. Steve Yellowhorse ist ein Navajo-Silber- und Goldschmied, der 1954 in Corpus Christi, Texas, geboren wurde. Steve stammt aus einer langen Reihe angesehener Männer und Frauen, die er als seine Vorbilder nennt. Sein Ururgroßvater, Hosteen Bele-sle-zo, gehörte zu den Tausenden Navajo, die während des Long Walk von 1868 gewaltsam umgesiedelt wurden. Seine Großmutter, Anna Yellowhorse, war eine hervorragende Navajo-Weberin, die den kreativen Visionär Arthur Beasley heiratete. One opal with natural host rock going through center, the other two secure in bezels with fractures. 18.5 grams.Wayne Wolf Robe Hunt, a full-blood Acoma Indian (1905-1977). Born on the Acoma Reservation, Wolf Robe was the son of Chief Day Break (Edward Proctor Hunt), Chief of the Delight Makers -- a man instrumental in the improvement of relations between the Acomas and whites. His mother, Morning Star, whose own father was Governor of Acoma seven times, was a potter and weaver. Wolf Robe learned silver-smithing from his older brother on the reservation. Wolf Robe achieved recovnition and fame for his jewelry and art work, winning the prestigious Philbrook Art Center's Grand Award in 1967. In addition, he was a businessman, with his own arts and crafts store in Tulsa, a lecturer, international traveller, author, and translator for the Bureau of American Ethnology. He assited L. A. White in his extensive studies of the Acoma Indians and made recordings for the National Anthropological Archives. Wolf Robe was particularly interested in the preservation of tribal customs, language and culture, and devoted his own time to this and the encouragement of others in similar efforts. Of his work at BAE he said, "My work there as an interpreter is the highlight of my efforts in trying to preseve all of the rich and wholesome lore of my people."* Not only was the preservation of the 'old ways' important to Wolf Robe, but also the representation and dissemination of his culture to whites, in an effort to promote their understanding and appreciation.
