  • Aaron/Norbert Peshlakai (Navajo) Modernist silver Tufa Cast/stamped concho belt

Aaron/Norbert Peshlakai (Navajo) Modernist silver Tufa Cast/stamped concho belt

    1 auf Lager

Aaron/Norbert Peshlakai (Navajo) Modernist silver Tufa Cast/stamped concho belt. Absolute masterpiece created my a modern day master and his son approximately 25 years ago. Belt is unworn with no holes, No idenifying marks that I could find, likely a custom piece made for a good customer/friend. I have had other Peshlakai pieces that were not signed that came from important collections and were of the same unimaginable quality that just can‘t be duplicated by anyone. I‘m 100% sure the note on the back of this buckle is a correct attribution of this item. Smaller sized belt with weight and measurements in pictures. The actual belt is 28" to the last silver bar with another 24" of leather beyond that. So it will fit up to a 48" waist or so with a little leather left at the end, or can be cut shorter of course. The way it is strung now it would fit about a 30" waist perfectly without moving any of the conchos. 1 Buckle, 9 Bars, 8 Conchos. Conchos are hand stamped, Buckle Tufa Cast. Norbert Peshlakai (Navajo), the first of ten children born to Ben and Lydia Peshlakai of Crystal, New Mexico, entered this world on May 6, 1953. In Lydia, a well known weaver in the Crystal style, and Ben, a miner, carpenter, and laborer, Norbert saw a strong work ethic, which guides him to this day. As a child he attended boarding schools in Crystal, and later Tohatchi, New Mexico. Weekend trips home were usually when he was able to visit family and practice his then-favorite medium, painting; one of his first paid jobs was to paint windows with a Christmas scene. He went on to attend Jefferson Junior High and Highland High School, both in Albuquerque. At that time Norbert knew he wanted to pursue his love of cross-country running, in which he excelled. Upon graduating in 1972, he decided to attend Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas. At Haskell, Norbert ran cross-country until he was sidelined by a knee injury, which forced him to quit the team. He decided to take art classes to fulfill his credit requirements. After meeting with his advisor, he decided to turn to his love of painting, though he inadvertently ended up in a trade class on house painting! His advisor suggested he take a jewelry class. Uninterested in jewelry, Norbert nonetheless took her suggestion; this was his first attempt to try his hand at silversmithing. He did not initially enjoy the class, and when his teacher Clint Leon could see that Norbert was failing, he pulled him aside and gave him specific assignments to bring his grades up. He learned soldering, overlay, inlay, enameling, lost wax, and hammering. He came to enjoy the medium, and soon created pieces on the side to sell for extra money. He took four more jewelry classes, and during a summer at home, he and his brother taught themselves tufa casting. An arm injury in 1974 caused Norbert not to return to Haskell, but he dedicated himself to jewelry-making and began accumulating basic silversmithing tools. A relative, Billy Tsosie, taught him how to make his own stamps, and thus began Norberts obsession with intricate stamping and texturing. These highly refined skills epitomize his style: designs are carefully planned and laid out to within a fraction of a millimeter. Designs are rich in detail but restrained, and stamps are struck so that the depth of stamping is perfectly even. Now with more than 300 handmade stamps and dozens of hammers for texturing, Norbert creates imaginative and often humorous pieces with the confidence of a master. Norbert met his wife-to-be, Linda (née Mullahan), also from Crystal, and they started their own family: Natasha was born in 1981 and Aaron in 1983. Linda and both children picked up hammers, stamps, and silver early on and still create beauty today, all in their own respectable styles. Natasha married Ben Patrick Haley, who is from a family known for their handmade silver beads. Their son Luke, now 12, works with his mom, dad, and grandparents, sharing the family legacy of peshlakai, or beeshligaiiliterally “white metal. Ken Williams, Jr. Wheelwright Museum

    1 auf Lager

Pilot Mountain Turquoise Sterling belt buckle Les Baker shop. Solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Fully functional with no unexpected wear or damage. Hallmarked LB Baker Jewelry, Sterling. Les Baker was a well-known southwest jewelry artist who designed and also made jewelry himself. Although he was Anglo he employed many Native American silversmiths throughout the years, most notably Fritson Toledo, the great Navajo artist. Les had a great deal to do with the success of the Stagecoach. We have sold more Les Baker jewelry throughout the years than any other jewelry artist. But beyond that, Les was a great mentor and friend to Susan and Gary, here at the Stagecoach. Back in the late 1970s Gary called Les about selling his jewelry. Gary and his father, Jim, met Les in Denver and have sold his jewelry ever since. In the early 1980s, Gary spent a week in Albuquerque while one of Les Navajo silversmiths taught Gary the craft. This was one of the turning points at the Stagecoach. We could now size our own sterling silver and gold rings and eventually make our own jewelry right here at the Stagecoach. This was and is a huge advantage in selling jewelry as our knowledge of the craft went up exponentially. And for all this, Les asked nothing in return. Les was born in 1935 and when he was older joined the Navy. He told me once that he lied about his age to get into the Navy and became one of the youngest Navy pilots ever. After the Korean War he headed back to New Mexico and became interested in American Indian jewelry. His wife at the time (ex-wife now) wanted a Navajo squash blossom necklace but Les couldnt afford it. He was always resourceful and since Les didnt have the money to purchase the squash blossom he figured he would try making one himself. It turned out so nice that when Les wife was at a party with Edith Maisel, the “Queen of Indian Jewelry was so impressed that she offered Les a job. Maisel helped popularize “Indian Jewelry and though it wasnt actually handmade, Maisels offered many Native Americans a job and increased the awareness of this art form. This was Les big break and he later also learned from the great Native American artist Carl Luthey. Eventually Les opened his own shop and was at the right time and the right place when the great “Indian Jewelry boom in the 1970s hit. Everybody wanted this turquoise Indian jewelry, from celebrities to the common man and woman. Les teamed up for a while with Bing Crosby (not the singer but the Indian Trader) and at one time had around 50 Native Americans working for him.

  • c1940's Dan Simplicio Zuni Lone Mountain turquoise silver ranger belt buckle

c1940's Dan Simplicio Zuni Lone Mountain turquoise silver ranger belt buckle

    1 auf Lager

c1940‘s Dan Simplicio Zuni Lone Mountain turquoise silver ranger belt buckle set. 3/4" ranger set, unmarked, attributed to Dan Simplicio, likely from the second quarter of the 20th century. The belt fits a 38-41" waist with existing holes. The belt is signed Fred Harvey, which is really cool and likely really rare and possibly collectible in it‘s own right. The belt is old but liikely has some life left in it if cared for. I don‘t really feel like I‘m charging a premium for the leather belt as this ranger set is rare and important, especially with this high grade turquoise which is most likely Lone Mountain. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallaces trading post and collaborated with amazing Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie. Throughout his time, he developed an inapt ability to create stunning leaf motifs with intricate stamps and carved details, beginning his signature balance of delicate leaf work and heavy turquoise and coral designs.

Victor Coochwytewa (1922-2011) Hopi overlay belt buckle . Solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pics. Fully functional, with appropriate wear as shown in the pictures. Victor Coochwytewa began creating exceptional overlay work in 1940, learning from Paul Saufkie. Coochwytewa is credited with the now common practice of texturing the base plate of silver. His work continually evolved and he learned diamond setting. His work earned many prestigious awards: the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Heard Museum, and the Gallup Inter-Tribal award. Coochwytewa was named an Arizona Indian Living Treasure in 1994. This Purple Heart veteran of WWII returned to jewelry making in 1946 after his discharge. He was the first hopi silversmith to texture the back plate of his pieces which has become a standard in Hopi jewelry. In the 1970s he began working in gold and diamonds, another genre stretching technique that garnished him many awards from the Heard Museum, Santa Fe Indian Market, The Gallup, and many other competitions. Success did not distract Coochwytewa from life as a traditional Hopi. He tended his cornfields every day, reserving afternoons for jewelry, and said that corn was his work and jewelry was his hobby. He probably spent as much time on his religious duties as on his other activities, and was a religious and cultural leader most of his life. He retired from jewelry making in 2006.

Alvin & Lula Begay Navajo High grade cobblestone inlay 3pc belt buckle set. 228 grams total weight, the leather belt is very light. Very versatile belt that can be easily adjusted and can be worn as a 3 pc set or two. With the current leather belt this will fit up to a 48" waist, can be easily adjusted to as small as you like. In 1956, Alvin and Lula Begay were both born into artistic families in Winslow, Arizona. They have worked as a silversmithing team since 1991, each serving their own role; Alvin works on the overall composition and construction of the piece, while Lula works on the setting/cutting of the stones as well as the polishing and final touches. The dynamic pair is known to not use any pre-made findings, everything outside of earring posts are handcrafted. Alvin is especially known for using his techniques of double and triple overlay, reversible necklaces, shadowboxes, and engraving--often all on the same piece! While still very adept in the art of jewelry-making, Alvins first love is bareback riding in rodeos. He grew up in a traditional Navajo life style on the reservation and is a natural athlete and cowboy. He has competed for 10 years, winning championships in 1987 and 1989. Although Alvin is a very humble and unassuming individual, he is one on AIRCAs top award winners. Awards in jewelry-making are also no stranger to Alvin; among several awards, he has won first with a necklace in a competition in Dallas, Texas.
