SZ7 vintage Lucy Ceshu Zuni sterling silver magpie channel inlay ring. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver, circa third quarter of the 20th century. Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. Unmarked.Lucy Ceshu (1933-2004) was a Zuni jeweler who worked with her husband Quincy Panteah to create high quality stone-to-stone inlay. The multi-stone inlay magpie is her signature design. This lovely magpie ring is a testament to Ceshu’s talent as a lapidary artist. The bird’s head is black jet and white shell. The body consists of precisely cut pieces of turquoise, coral, jet and white shell. Within the white shell she placed small slivers of jet. All of the stonework was set in fine handmade sawtooth bezels. Silver balls were added as accents on the ends of the beak and feathers. The piece is unsigned, but the work is distinctively that of Lucy Ceshu.

Old pawn ring with pawn slip shown.Two of the nicest and most pleasant people in Zuni, Lee and Mary have 30 years experience and still really enjoy making jewelry.Husband-and-wife team Lee and Mary Weebothee have garnered much acclaim for their fine jewelry. In the 1970s, they were recognized as having won "more Grand Prize Awards than any Zuni artisans in history" (Scottsdale Weekly, February 13, 1970). They started working together in the late 1940s, he doing the silverwork, she cutting the stones, and both setting the domed and meticulously matched stones that make their work distinctive. They sign their work with ZUNI LEE/MARY.Lee and Mary Weebothee were among the most accomplished silversmiths in the history of Zuni arts and crafts. But even that bold statement seems inadequate for when you examine Weebothee jewelry its fine quality matches or exceeds what is being made by today's best artists.The silver in their jewelry is polished so finely it feels more like silk then metal. Their lapidary is magical. Every Coral and turquoise gemstone in a setting perfectly matches the one next to it. Not only does that take great skill and patience, but it is also very costly and time consuming to polish away blemishes in expensive stone.Much of Weebothee's jewelry was completely handmade using hand tools. Electricity did not appear in Zuni until the 1960's. Even after the arrival of electricity most silversmiths preferred working with the precision Swiss watchmaker files supplied by CG Wallace. Electric tools of the period (that were available in Zuni) were crude, cumbersome and simply not up to the task of producing the incredible detail that Zuni silversmiths were noted for.Lee and Mary Weebothee took great pride in their work and did not sell jewelry that did not meet their high standards.

Fits up to a 1.5" beltChief Shatka Bear-Step (1898-1980); otherwise known as Richard Spencer) who was both an accomplished and well known silversmith.Not only was Shatka Bear-Step a silversmith but he was also passionate about the Appaloosa horse breed. The Appaloosa Horse Club (an international breed registry), inducted Chief Shatka Bear-Step into their hall of fame in 1988, and on their website they describe him in this way: "An Appaloosa showman and promoter, Shatka Bear-Step added colorful and romantic aspects to the breed. Shatka was the father of Mr. Dick Spencer (Western Horseman Magazine) and a well-known silver and turquoise artist. He was featured on national television depicting the Lord‘s Prayer in Indian Sign Language. He produced several awards for the Appaloosa Horse Club, including the Shatka Bear-Step award given to the overall high point youth at each National Show."His love for the Appaloosa breed is apparent in the book he wrote and illustrated, "Painted Ponies" It was originally published in 1952.

Philbert BegayPhilbert Begay is a very talented Navajo silversmith who comes from a famous silversmithing family including his four uncles and father, the late Richard Begay. Philbert learned the art of silver work from his father by polishing and finishing pieces for him as a young boy. Philbert also excels in intricate silver inlay, a technique his father is famous for. After growing up around the art of jewelry and learning many skills from his father, Philbert’s natural talent in jewelry-making has given him a name of his own. He is now an expert at overlay, applique, stamp work, cutting, polishing and inlaying stones.After attending the Colorado Institute of Art, Philbert began working with his father part-time and is now a full-time silversmith specializing in sterling silver and 14K gold contemporary Navajo jewelry.He does excellent work and is gaining a reputation as an outstanding smith. Chief Shatka Bear-Step (1898-1980; otherwise known as Richard Spencer) who was both an accomplished and well known silversmith.Not only was Shatka Bear-Step a silversmith but he was also passionate about the Appaloosa horse breed. The Appaloosa Horse Club (an international breed registry), inducted Chief Shatka Bear-Step into their hall of fame in 1988, and on their website they describe him in this way: "An Appaloosa showman and promoter, Shatka Bear-Step added colorful and romantic aspects to the breed. Shatka was the father of Mr. Dick Spencer (Western Horseman Magazine) and a well-known silver and turquoise artist. He was featured on national television depicting the Lord‘s Prayer in Indian Sign Language. He produced several awards for the Appaloosa Horse Club, including the Shatka Bear-Step award given to the overall high point youth at each National Show."His love for the Appaloosa breed is apparent in the book he wrote and illustrated, "Painted Ponies" It was originally published in 1952.
