Navajo artist Leon Martinez began his jewelry career in the early 1970’s and is considered one of the most celebrated Native American jewelry artists, winning first place awards several times at the Navajo Nation Fair and Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial. Influenced by his jewelry-making parents, Leo and Edith Martinez, Leon began at the young age of nine assisting with buffering, soldering and setting stones. He also helped his parents make squash blossom necklaces, rings, and bracelets during the high demand for Indian Jewelry in the 1970s. Soon, making jewelry became a passion for Leon and his talent grew enormously. A hard-working self-starter, Leon uses nature as inspiration. From plants, to flowers, to rocks, to landscapes, he looks at everything in his environment for his design ideas.

sz10 Kevin Yazzie Navajo Bisbee turquoise tufa cast sterling silver ring. Nice contemporary ring with high grade natural Bisbee spiderweb turquoise. Kevin Yazzie Kevin Yazzie began making jewelry in 2014. Kevin worked at several different jobs while in school at New Mexico University. One day Aaron Anderson was in the store Kevin was working and told him to stop by his shop and see if he liked jewelry making He started hanging out at his studio. Kevin watched everything to see how he did it. Before going to Aaron’s shop he didn’t know anything about jewelry making. He gave Kevin some tufa stone and told him to start carving. His first piece was terrible. It was supposed to be a small pendant and it weighed over three ounces. His depths were really messed up and he had no idea what he was doing. He was embarrassed to take any more of Aaron’s tufa stone so he went to Thunderbird and bought his own. Kevin started to work on a bracelet which came out really nice and I sold it online for $230. “Creating jewelry is really rewarding and I want to keep doing this.”

Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. Jimmy Harrison is an authentic Native American Indian. He is a member of the Red House Clan. He was born into the Navajo Reservation in 1952. Jim began his professional career as a jewelry craftsman in 1981. He was taught all the fundamentals of working with silver at the age of 16 when he enrolled in a silversmithing class in high school. He credits Preston Monongye and Jessie Monongya for his success as a fine jewelry artisan. They shared their techniques with him and opened up his mind to his own designs. His designs are reflective of the bright stars of the New Mexico nights and the geometric forms of the landscape. They all play a part in his finely detailed inlay jewelry. With sleek and contemporary shapes and designs, he manages to balance the flavor of tradition with his stylized approach to Indian imagery. It is believed that Preston, Jesse, and Jim were among the first jewelers to work extensively with inlay of multicolored stones and shells with silver. His designs continue to change and they include Hopi and Navajo Sunfaces, and the Yei- bei-chei. He experiments with landscapes and galaxies. On occasion, Jim adds a rug design as a border to his beautiful designs. The work of Jimmy Harrison is very distinctive and easily recognizable. He works primarily with sterling silver and authentic multi-colored inlayed stones such as, coral, turquoise, lapis, sugalite, mother of pearl stones, and other various materials. His colorful and innovative inlays in his jewelry are inspired by the natural gifts that Mother Earth and Father Sky provide to each and every one of us. His creations include rings, necklaces, bolos, bracelets, earrings, and concho belts. He stamps his jewelry as, Jimmy Harrison.

Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. I believe this to be a natural Opal as Benny was very well respected and made this later in his career. He always used really high grade materials even earlier in his career. Benny Armijo (1937-2022). Benny was a renowned master Navajo silversmith who specialized in this complex inlay and "corn row" type cobblestone inlay using high quality stones. His jewelry was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and was collected by many high-profile artists from James Taylor, Charlie Daniels, to Hank Williams Jr. His pieces can be seen on many album covers of top music groups and are highly collectable today. His incredible sense of humor was as well-known as his jewelry. He was simply the most generous man that one could ever imagine, always helping complete strangers he encountered along the way. He was active from the early 70‘s until the late 20th century.. His older mark from the 1970‘s looks like a tadpole and has been misattributed to "Edward Zuni", but I‘m 100% sure this is Benny Armijo‘s work and hallmark, it‘s been confirmed by his living relatives. Benny was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico Benito M Armijo Jr The older stamp he first used was to represent the letter C and letter M which stood for Chief Marcos. Many years later maybe around 1989 he stamped his jewelry with Benny Armijo. He lived in California for many years and returned to New Mexico and passed away January 2022. He was known for his stone inlay on what he called a Hopi wedding band in which all the stones were inlaid inside the ring or bracelet. Giving the thought that the beauty between the couple is in the eye of the beholder and the couple would choose the different color of stones and their meanings to be inlaid on their wedding bands.

Master Hopi Silversmith, Waterhouse Clan – Shungopavi, Second Mesa Victor Coochwytewa is widely regarded as one of the most influential Hopi silversmiths of the 20th century. A master of overlay jewelry and a pillar of his community, his work helped define the standards and aesthetics that Hopi jewelers continue to follow today. His career, which spanned more than 60 years, earned him national recognition, including being named an Arizona Indian Living Treasure in 1994. Born on June 7, 1922, in the village of Shungopavi on Second Mesa, Victor was a member of the Waterhouse Clan. He first learned the basics of silversmithing in 1940 under the guidance of Paul Saufkie. But his early career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served with distinction in the South Pacific. A member of the 167th Combat Military Police and later the 5309th Infantry Division under General Frank Merrill (Merrill’s Marauders), Victor saw heavy combat in Burma and was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbons. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Victor returned to Hopi and became one of the first students in the now-legendary Veterans’ Classes established under the G.I. Bill. Taught by Fred Kabotie and Paul Saufkie, these classes marked the beginning of a new era in Hopi silversmithing. Victor not only mastered the overlay technique but innovated within it—introducing a background texturing method inspired by leatherwork that became a defining feature of Hopi overlay jewelry. Victor‘s designs, executed in both sterling silver and gold, are known for their precision, spiritual depth, and elegant symbolism. Many of his pieces reflect Hopi traditions and cosmology, and his work has been collected by major institutions and private collectors around the world. In addition to his artistry, Victor was deeply rooted in the traditional Hopi way of life. A lifelong dry farmer, he raised corn, squash, beans, and watermelons without irrigation or chemical inputs, relying entirely on prayer, ceremony, and natural rainfall. “Jewelry is my hobby; corn is my work,” he once said with characteristic humility. He attributed the success of both his crops and his craft to blessings from the Creator. “When you pray, you should pray for all things, and in return, all things are benefited. Nothing can be accomplished without prayer.” Victor retired from silversmithing and farming in 2006 and continued to live with his family at Hopi until his passing on July 3, 2011, at the age of 89. Today, his legacy lives on in the work of his descendants and in the broader community of Hopi artists who follow the path he helped shape. His jewelry remains among the most iconic and sought-after expressions of Hopi artistry—no serious collection of Hopi overlay work is truly complete without a piece by Victor Coochwytewa.

Cecil is well known for his quality of material and meticulous workmanship in his one-of-a-kind collectible designs. He is best known for his extraordinary lapidary skills, whose signature style is creating some of the best mosaic inlay work today. Cecil worked for the Brown family, Brown’s Trading Company in Safford, Arizona in the mid-80‘s and had access to top grade Morenci turquoise, which he used to create many beautiful jewelry pieces. There he honed his craft before venturing out on his own and establishing his own studio. Most of Cecil’s pieces have a variety of colorful, inlaid materials including spiny oyster, onyx, lapis, opal and the rare Dragon Skin or Brown Spider Web turquoise. These stones are most often inlaid in asymmetrical settings. His other silverwork is classic Navajo stamp work with classically set stones.

Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. Horace Iule, Zuni Pueblo Jeweler Horace Iule learned silversmithing from his father and eventually became an expert of the casting method. He was one of the first from Zuni Pueblo to create the Knifewing God in silver. Horace began working as a silversmith in the 1930s after returning from school in Phoenix where he had studied blacksmithing. Horace Iule (1901-1978), pronounced Ai-ú-le was a third-generation silversmith. His grandfather, a man known as Sneezing Man, was identified by John Adair in his book The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths as one of the first silversmiths at Zuni Pueblo. Horace Iule also taught jewelry making at Zuni Day School, teaching and influencing a whole generation of Zuni smiths. Horace taught his son Wilbur Iule who carries on the tradition.

Experts believe her jewelry was produced by multiple silversmiths and her hallmark affixed to the jewelry. Her work often draws on pre-Columbian designs presented in modernist contexts. She is known for necklaces, rings, pins, brooches, and earrings that employ silver and copper decorated with jade and other semi-precious stones. Some wear to stone and bezel. Wayne Wolf Robe Hunt, a full-blood Acoma Indian (1905-1977). Born on the Acoma Reservation, Wolf Robe was the son of Chief Day Break (Edward Proctor Hunt), Chief of the Delight Makers -- a man instrumental in the improvement of relations between the Acomas and whites. His mother, Morning Star, whose own father was Governor of Acoma seven times, was a potter and weaver. Wolf Robe learned silver-smithing from his older brother on the reservation. Wolf Robe achieved recovnition and fame for his jewelry and art work, winning the prestigious Philbrook Art Center‘s Grand Award in 1967. In addition, he was a businessman, with his own arts and crafts store in Tulsa, a lecturer, international traveller, author, and translator for the Bureau of American Ethnology. He assited L. A. White in his extensive studies of the Acoma Indians and made recordings for the National Anthropological Archives. Wolf Robe was particularly interested in the preservation of tribal customs, language and culture, and devoted his own time to this and the encouragement of others in similar efforts. Of his work at BAE he said, "My work there as an interpreter is the highlight of my efforts in trying to preseve all of the rich and wholesome lore of my people."* Not only was the preservation of the ‘old ways‘ important to Wolf Robe, but also the representation and dissemination of his culture to whites, in an effort to promote their understanding and appreciation. He travelled all over Europe and to Australia for the Departments of Agriculture and Commerce, representing the American Indian to an appreciative audience.
