In the 1970s he was part of a program at the Museum of Northern Arizona where he was able to collaborate and study along with Duayne Maktima and Victor Beck under the mentorship of Jake Brookings. He is known for making Hopi overlay jewelry since the 1970s.In 2008, Robert Lomadapki (1942-2015) was named an “Arizona Living Treasure for his dedicated work in education in the Native American community.  Not only was he a talented artist, he was an educator and a gallery owner who spent his time encouraging and promoting the careers of young artists.  He spent the last years of his life in the Applied Indigenous Studies department at Northern Arizona University as a traditional knowledge scholar.  He was also the owner and operator of Isvaki Gallery in downtown Flagstaff, Arizona.

He learned his jewelry making techniques from the Navajo silversmiths around Taos, NM, and is renowned for his modernist inlay cuff bracelets, belt buckles, and earrings. Some of his materials were obtained in trade with Eskimos living in the Alaskan tundra. He also created distinctive wrap inlay designs using turquoise, red jasper, black onyx, and other semiprecious stones. Jack Woolsey passed away in 2005, at the age of 64.

Chalmers Day Hopi Overlay belt buckle sterling silver kokopelli designs. Solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures, some expected wear with no damage. Chalmers was born October 24, 1956 in Keams Canyon, Arizona. Chalmers was given the Hopi name Dap-Hong-Va, and was born to the Corn and Water Clans. He is the grandson of Robert Satala, Sr., one of the Hopis earliest silversmiths and a merchant on the First Mesa in Arizona. Chalmers Day learned his art from the Hopi master, Preston Monongye. As Dr. Gregory Schaaf in his book, American Indian Jewelry Artist Biographies states: “Chalmers specializes in very detailed and sophisticated designs in the overlay technique. The quality of his artistry is exceptional. His compositions combine village scenes, cornfields, kachinas and more in a single piece. His jewelry takes one on a journey into the Hopi world. His designs portray the life of the Hopi, their migrations, ceremonies and spiritual figures. He is recognized as one of the greatest overlay jewelers in history. In 1976, Chalmers participated in one of Prestons jewelry classes. Preston continued to advise Chalmers in his jewelry craft. Like the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Indians were the benefactors of the Spaniards silversmith tradition. While the two nations influences are evident in the art of the other, Hopi jewelry artists sought to distinguish themselves from other Southwestern Indian jewelry artists. Beginning just before WWII, Hopi Indian jewelry artists have developed a characteristic style, one that uses few stones but intricate overlay design work. Today Chalmers Day is the most well-known Hopi jewelry artists. Day has been creating jewelry since 1972.

Second quarter of the 20th century. United Indian Traders Association (UITA) was formed in 1931 to insure quality craftsmanship in Native American art. The association had strict rules regarding the methods used to make jewelry. A UITA stamp was a guarantee the piece was hand made by a member of an enrolled tribe. Traders paid dues and each post had its own number

c1940‘s Dan Simplicio Zuni Lone Mountain turquoise silver ranger belt buckle set. 3/4" ranger set, unmarked, attributed to Dan Simplicio, likely from the second quarter of the 20th century. The belt fits a 38-41" waist with existing holes. The belt is signed Fred Harvey, which is really cool and likely really rare and possibly collectible in it‘s own right. The belt is old but liikely has some life left in it if cared for. I don‘t really feel like I‘m charging a premium for the leather belt as this ranger set is rare and important, especially with this high grade turquoise which is most likely Lone Mountain. Zuni silversmith, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) learned the art of jewelry making from his uncle, Juan DeDios, one of the earliest Zuni silversmiths. Although this World War II veteran only had about 30 short years of jewelry making, his talent and techniques are still recognized. Simplicio is one of the first known artists to begin incorporating natural red coral branches and rough-cut coral nuggets into his jewelry. As early as 1931, it is also said that he is possibly one of the first Zuni artists to begin using gold. Simplicio worked at C.G. Wallaces trading post and collaborated with amazing Zuni artists including Leekya Deyuse, Teddie Weahkee, Leo Poblano, Bernard Homer and Lee Edakkie. Throughout his time, he developed an inapt ability to create stunning leaf motifs with intricate stamps and carved details, beginning his signature balance of delicate leaf work and heavy turquoise and coral designs.
