Sz7 Alvin Yellowhorse Navajo Sterling channel inlay ringJust a few miles west of Gallup, NM., nestled among the canyons & hills of the small town of Lupton, AZ., lies the quaint, cozy workshop of the young Navajo artist, Alvin Yellowhorse. Alvin learned the silversmithing trade at an early age from his father, Frank Yellowhorse, and later mastered the techniques of cutting the small turquoise & other colorful stones into precise little pieces in which he assembles into intricate designs inspired by his Anasazi ancestors.This technique is called “Channel Inlay”. A style of inlay where all the stones are cut & assembled together first & then ground flush before being highly polished. Alvin is credited for originating another style of inlay called “Corn Row Wave Inlay” in which the stones are individually cut & rounded over before setting them into a silver or gold bracelet, pendant, ring, or link bracelet. Corn Row Wave Inlay is much more time consuming as he has to completely finish each stone one at a time before placing them into the gold or silver setting.Alvin creates each piece one at a time . There are no mass production techniques or assembly lines. His designs, although very contemporary, are enriched by the Zuni, Hopi, & Anasazi influences along with his own Navajo heritage. 6.25" Wilson Begay Navajo turquoise silver cast cuff braceletWilson and Carol Begay are traditional Navajo silversmiths. These talented silversmiths have been creating traditional Navajo jewelry since 1969. They came from families well known for their jewelry making. Wilson’s father, Luke, taught John Adair, author of “Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths” how to make sand cast jewelry. He worked for many years with Mike and Dean Kirk, at the famous Kirk Brothers Trading Company in Gallup, New Mexico.Carol’s parents, Angela and Allen Chee were both silversmiths who worked by C.G. Wallace, the famous jewelry trader from Zuni, New Mexico.The Begays began their career making sandcast jewelry, a traditional type of Navajo jewelry that requires the artist to make carvings in Tufa stone to make forms to shape molten silver. They first worked for Tobe Tupen, a well known trader in Gallup. Carol remembers that silver was only $1.25 an ounce when they started.Today they are independent artists whose work is widely sought after and admired. Wilson concentrates on the casting and building the foundations of the jewelry and Carol sets the stones and does the finishing work. They work together to design their jewelry.Traditional sandcast silver jewelry is a unique Navajo art form. The process, although it sounds simple, requires careful discipline and years of practice to obtain quality results.The artist takes two pieces of pumice stone and grinds them together to create two flat surfaces. Then the design is carved into one of the two pumice stones. An opening is carved from the design to the top and bottom of the stone. The two pieces of stone are then tied together so that the carved design is between the two flat areas. Silver is then melted in a crucible, and when it reaches the proper molten form, it is poured into the opening on the top of the design. If it is the proper temperature, it flows through to the bottom where it cools and hardens, filling the design space. After cooling, the stones are separated, the casting removed and the protrusions on the top and bottom are cut off. The silver is then filed smooth and shaped.If stones are to be set on the piece, the artist builds a silver bezel to hold the stone and then solders it to the piece of jewelry. Sawdust is put in the bottom of the bezel to cushion the stone and the bezel is tightened. The piece is then polished to the shine the artist likes.Wilson Begay of Gallup is the acknowledged master of the art of sandcast jewelry. Luke Begay, Wilson's grandfather, demonstrated this skill to John Adair in the early 1930's when Adair was conducting a survey of native silversmiths of the Smithsonian. Luke taught the skill to Wilson as a young man. Today, in his 60's, Wilson continues to make sandcast jewelry in his Gallup home. His wife, Carol, chooses the stones to be used and sets them in bezels. The Begays have three daughters, Nichole, Yvonne and Bonnie, are continuing the family tradition.Wilson's stamped signature is a flat brimmed Navajo hat with his initials under it. His signature is one of the most recognized in Indian jewelry. sz7.5 Thomas Curtis (1942-2013) Navajo silver feather ring, adjustable.Thomas Curtis was an award winning, self-taught Navajo Silversmith; a master who pursued his art for over 50 years. He is best known and loved for his painstakingly beautiful handcrafted precision stamp work in heavy-gauge silver creating sophistically stimulating jewelry. Born in 1942 into a family of skilled silversmiths, Thomas Curtis observed the secrets of his family’s finely crafted silver work and began creating traditional Navajo jewelry by the age of 12. Before committing himself completely to the art of metalsmithing, Curtis was a champion horseback rider and won many awards as a member of the All-Indian Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association performing bareback, bull riding and saddle bronc. The rodeo is where he was given his acclaimed surname, ‘Curtis’. Born as Thomas Redhorse, his family name was the source of many jokes while working in the rodeo and was given the name ‘Curtis’ by a stock contractor who wished him to be recognized for his riding talent and not overshadowed by a name. After somersaulting backwards off of a horse and injuring himself in 1969, Thomas left the rodeo to pursue his craft as a silversmith full time.Thomas Curtis grew up observing his uncle who was a blacksmith and had a business repairing wagons. “It was like today’s car garage, he had wagons lined up. I would help him, I was fascinated by all of the tools and I had an interest in working with metal.” Curtis elaborated on his fascinations with blacksmithing while working in the rodeo, and continued them into his jewelry making career by hand making the hardened steel die stamps that identified him as one of the premier Navajo silversmiths of his time. Thomas Curtis believed an artist should be a part of every process in the creation of their work, and he took monumental pride in the art of making his own die stamps for his harmonious arrangements. Curtis was often quoted finding inspiration for his pieces by, “looking at the ground, the sky, the plants, and the four seasons.” He also turned to sacred traditions, sourcing his patterns and descriptive style from traditional weavings, historic and contemporary construction from the 1890’s-1940’s, and adapted classic ketoh designs for the lids of the elaborate silver boxes he is known for. Thomas Curtis had an extreme talent for delicately balancing compositions of traditional design motifs with his intense skill, generating dramatic results with refined charisma. With only an 8th grade education he excelled as an artist and craftsman who, like his precision stampwork, deeply embedded a profound mark in the history of jewelry making, raising the standard for quality work and inspiring others to push themselves to greater heights.
