Robert Taylor was born on the Navajo Reservation at Indian Wells in 1961. His father is a medicine man, and his mother is a weaver. He started working in metals as a child helping his father and older siblings. He turned to making jewelry professionally as a young adult after working in construction for several years. He is known for his overlay technique in silver and gold. He currently resides with his family on the Navajo Reservation.
