1 en stock

1930's Ronson Art Metal Works English Bulldog Table Lighter. 4.5" tall x 5.25" long. rare and unusual.Along with the Touch Tip, the Striker lighters are probably the most desirable Ronson Lighters for collectors. It is evident the craftsmanship that the Art Metal Works put into these well made lighters. To use striker lighters, one pulls out the wand, which is resting in lighter fluid, from the top of the dog’s head. Then sliding the wand down the flint on the dog’s snout will cause a spark and ignite the tip of the wand. Ronson offered a variety of animal striker lighters. Some of the other animals include an elephant, a very Art Deco pelican and a bear. The Ronson lighter company started as The Art Metal Works in 1897 and was incorporated on July 20, 1898, by Max Hecht, Louis Vincent Aronson and Leopold Herzig, in Newark, New Jersey.Louis V. Aronson was a huge creative driving force for the company; and, with a few business adjustments, including the addition of Alexander Harris (1910-11)[4][5] as Business Manager, the company soon became World Famous. All accounts state that Louis Aronson was a gifted man, who at 16 years old set up a money-making shop in his parents' home - before receiving a U.S. patent for a commercially valuable metal-plating process he developed when he was 24 years old, and he sold half the rights while retaining the Right to Use. "His experiments, which he has been conducting since his early youth, resulted in 1893 in the discovery of a process for electrically producing tinplate. Much money was expended upon improving the process... and has been of great practical value to the whole industry.[7] Retaining its rights, he sold half the patent rights, and later used part of the proceeds to open the Art Metal Works in Newark, N.J.[8] Soon the company was producing a variety of high-quality Lamps, Book ends, Art Statues and other decorative items, prized today for their detail in the collector marketplace.tw154

sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin Ancient Eastern Ram figure with Provenance from the Estate Of Hugh McMath Univer

    1 en stock

Ancient Egyptian/Chinese Sancai Ram figure with Provenance from the Estate Of Hugh McMath University of TX Dean of Architecture. Ok so I'm 100% sure it's ancient and belongs in a museum...just not sure where it's from. If I found it in a collection of Chinese items I'd be sure it was Tang Dynasty Chinese or around that time. Thing is this guy got around quite a bit in the early to mid 20th century with an interest in Archaeology/Architecture. It has a custom fitted wood base with the number 13 on the base and I'm sure there's a list somewhere that says where he found this. It has old restorations on one horn and in the back. Really it's a little difficult to tell what's restoration and what they may have been afraid to clean off upon excavation. I believe it was discovered, not sure when by Hugh McMath who played an important role at the University of TX for many years, there's much information about him in the UT library, below is a description of his papers. 4" long x 3" tall without stand that was obviously made circa mid 20th century to display it. Hugh L. McMath papers Location: Alexander Architectural Archives Subject Tags: Architecture Collection Type: Archive & Notable Collection The Hugh McMath papers include textual and photographic material primarily documenting his 44-year teaching career in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. He held a deep interest in the art and architecture of Mexico and developed courses in pre-Hispanic and Colonial architecture of Mexico and published several monographs on the subject. Record types include photographs, correspondence, student work, writings, and faculty papers. I just bought this a few hours ago along with other items from the estate, right now I don't have time in my life to research anything for more than about 5 min or so and I'm always overwhelmed with stuff so I wanted to get it photographed and put in a safe place and hopefully have time to spend on it later or I'll take it with me next time I go to a better auction house. b63

sale - www.estatefreshaustin.com Estate Fresh Austin c1900 Fenal Freres Pexonne Marcelle Customized Plate

    1 en stock

c1900 Fenal Freres Pexonne Marcelle Customized Plate. Interesting likely one of a kind item, I'm not sure if it was made by a factory worker or if they sold customized plates at one point. It's over 100 years old with no cracks, chips, restorations, or crazing. 8.75" wide. Hand painted with an underglaze stencil of the name. It is one of the oldest in Lorraine. (1720). Through many disappointments, earthenware will change hands 7 times in 100 years. From 1836, it was entirely owned by Nicolas Fenal, a farmer, who suddenly found himself the owner of this pottery. When he died in 1857, his children and nephews took over from him and created the Fenal Frères (FF) brand. One of the nephews, Théophile Fenal, created his own factory in Badonviller, after a turbulent period in Pexonne. The factory competes with that of his family in Pexonne. After the war of 1870, with the arrival of immigrants from Sarreguemines, the quality of the earthenware from Pexonne changed. Modernly designed ovens are set up and old colored paste earthenware gives way to white paste and transparent enamel. The creation of the Baccarat-Badonviller railway line which serves the Pexonne plant promotes development. In 1897, the Fenal Frères joint ownership - uncles and nephews - registered its marks. It is the Golden Age of the manufacture which will reach 389 workers in 1900. The production, not always identified, will be very varied (from crockery to earthenware stoves) and of good quality. tw193 The life of the workers of the earthenware factories of Pexonne at the beginning of the XX ° century was hard. They came - women, men and children - from Pexonne, Fenneviller but also from Neufmaisons and Badonviller. Everyone went to work in sneakers in summer and clogs in winter, in the dust and under the sun in the summer, in the snow in the winter. Daily work was since the law of 1848 "limited" to 12 hours. A law of 1892 had however reduced the work of women to 10 hours ...... The workers of Neufmaisons and Badonviller brought their midday meal in "camp pots" but for the majority of them, it was the wife or the eldest daughter who would carry the meal to Pexonne. Hard, hard, life in 1900, for the workers of the “Belle Epoque”… .. The First World War will seriously damage the Pexonne factory. Quickly rebuilt and modernized, the earthenware will again suffer attacks during the Second World War. August 27, 1944 is a dark day for the town: 80 deportees (of which only 17 will return from the camps). M. de Vitry is among the dead, as is his son Guy. M. de Villermont, mayor of the village will be shot. Life resumed in October 1945 at the earthenware factory, with the production of useful articles, soon to be improved. Exports are resuming, particularly to North Africa. But the ravages of war will leave fatal traces: the equipment is defective, production drops. The coup de grace will come in 1953 with the final shutdown of the generator which supplies the plant with motive power. The factory will close… ..

Mark Kohler Texas Artist 1997 Cowboy Watercolor Early Work. Guaranteed original Watercolor unframed with no damage. The estate it came from were friends of Kohler's and I'll be listing a few of his works. According to his website he's been painting commercially for over 23 years, so this would be right about that time. Measures 15" x 11" on high end watercolor paper. "I have a passion for the American West, and for the last 16 years I've dedicated my God-given talent to one goal: documenting the independent spirit and pride that the modern working cowboy has inherited from his predecessors. It is uniquely American and worthy of preservation. Like artists before me, I am drawn to the West and the people and animals that tame this oftentimes harsh environment. I strive to capture the honor, the strength and the dignity with which they pursue their lives. It is my hope that these paintings reveal the heart and soul of my subjects, and the profound respect I have for them. It is my privilege to chronicle this amazing lifestyle and the rewards have been beyond measure." Mark Kohler is an award-winning watercolorist, the recipient of the 2008 Cowboy Artists of America Founders Award and the 2009 Phippen Museum Foundation Award. He has been invited to some of the oldest, traditional ranches still left in the country, including the O RO Ranch in Arizona and the Pitchfork Ranch in the Texas Panhandle. His works are included in private and corporate collections throughout the world. tw6

c1920 Argy Rousseau Pate De Verre Bowl in the Ivy Pattern signed G.Argy Rousseau. 3.5" tall x 4.5" wide at the rim with no cracks, chips, or restorations. Gabriel Argy-Rousseau is produced wonderful works of pate de verre art glass from about 1914 until 1937. Somewhere between 200 and 300 different designs have been recorded by researchers. Scholars believe that between 15,000 and 20,000 total pieces of art glass were produced by G. Argy-Rousseau. That is a relatively small production and it has made some pieces of his work very rare today. Please do not make the assumption that Argy-Rousseau was just a studio glass maker. He was the main creative force behind the glass, but it was in fact a large production. There were at times as many as 20 employees. G. Argy-Rousseau glass was sold all over Europe, in The United States, Latin America, and even in North Africa. It is partly because of this extensive original sales network that his glass can be found all over the world today. The importance of Argy-Rousseau was two-fold. First, it was completely unlike anything glass makers were producing at the time. And secondly, while others started trying the same styles, no one else was ever really able to make anything consistently more appealing or better. So not only was Argy-Rousseau the first, he was also the best. That is a feat that is rarely accomplished in the arts. Below is a brief timeline of Gabriel Argy-Rousseau and his life accomplishments: 1885 – Born in Meslay-le-Vidame, France 1902 – Attends Ecole de Serves 1906 – Graduates from Ecole de Sevres with an engineering degree 1913 – Marries Marianne Argyriades 1914 – Opens his first studio and displayed his original art glass 1921 – Forms firm with Gustav Moser-Millot to market Argy-Rousseau’s art glass 1923 – Generally considered to be the peak of his work 1931 – Moser-Millot liquidates firm marketing Argy-Rousseau works 1932 – Argy-Rousseau starts a new glass making venture 1937 – Closes the mostly unsuccessful new glass operation 1953 – Argy-Rousseau passes away tw191

Vintage Alabaster Pietra Dura Natural Stone Mosaic Trinket box. 3.25" x 2.25" x 1.5" no damage. circa mid 20th century. tw190 Pietra dura (Italian: [ˈpjɛːtra ˈduːra]) or pietre dure [ˈpjɛːtre ˈduːre] (see below), called parchin kari or parchinkari (Persian: پرچین کاری‎) in the Indian Subcontinent, is a term for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly polished colored stones to create images. It is considered a decorative art. The stonework, after the work is assembled loosely, is glued stone-by-stone to a substrate after having previously been "sliced and cut in different shape sections; and then assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section was practically invisible". Stability was achieved by grooving the undersides of the stones so that they interlocked, rather like a jigsaw puzzle, with everything held tautly in place by an encircling 'frame'. Many different colored stones, particularly marbles, were used, along with semiprecious, and even precious stones. It first appeared in Rome in the 16th century, reaching its full maturity in Florence. Pietra dura items are generally crafted on green, white or black marble base stones. Typically, the resulting panel is completely flat, but some examples where the image is in low relief were made, taking the work more into the area of hardstone carving. TW187

Niels Erik From Sterling Denmark MCM Atomoic Brooch. 1 5/8" wide x 9/16" beautiful condition with no issues. Danish jeweller and silversmith Niels Erik From ( N.E. From) was born in 1908 and opened his first workshop in 1931 when he was still only twenty-three . Over the next forty years Niels Erik went on to become one one of the greats of Danish design, and created many works including floral-inspired designs often set with semi-precious gemstones. These pieces took inspiration from the Skønvirke style. This was a Scandinavian development that formed part of Denmark’s Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movement . This movement ususally took inspiration from nature with designs incorporating flowers and floral motifs as well as featuring natural creatures such as fish. N.E. FROM JEWELLRY STYLES - EARLY FLORAL DESIGNS AND LATER ABSTRACT MODERNIST PIECES N.E. From’s output generally displays one of two distinct styles. In the early years of production he produced wiry, thin, foliage and floral pieces .However, beginning in the 1950's the work produced by From (which were often the designs of other designers) had a very different look. No longer does the jewellery feature romantic, detailed designs from nature. The later pieces have modernist, clean lines with geometric and abstract shapes. Occasionally the modern designs show nature as inspiration with abstract blossom and leaf and blossom shapes. In generally though, they follow the trend of the 1950s of , spare, minimalist design.production .

Nice vintage piece in good condition. 1.5" square About Stuart Nye In the depths of the depression, Stuart Nye bought some second hand tools and a little silver. Without any experience in jewelry or metal work, but with good taste, an eye for beauty and faith in himself, he began to make a few simple bangle bracelets. Through trial and error he learned the nature of his materials and began to fashion silver into the leaves and flowers so characteristic of our jewelry today. From that day in 1933 when Mr. Nye began, our shop has changed in many ways. It has moved from an attic room through a series of additions to a garage to the rustic building built especially for our use in 1948 which we now call "The Shop".

c1910 D'Argental French Scenic Cameo Glass Vase with Shepherd Scene 11.75" x
5.5". Incredible complex labor intensive piece of over 100 year old hand
engraved art nouveau French cameo glass with no issues or damage whatsoever.St
Louis had been and still is one of the great old glass houses of France; they
had gone to the Paris exhibition in 1900 expecting to be crowned king of glass,
only to be completely out-classed by the cameo glass of the ‘upstart’ Emile
Galle. In the early 1920s they were still trying to get their own back. Paul
Nicolas cut a deal with St Louis –he would make cameo glass for them using their
facilities and then also he could use their facilities to make cameo glass for
himself too. This was before the days of ‘studio art glass’ if you had a glass
kiln you were a major sized business, not a one-man-band. The pieces Nicolas
made for St Louis were signed a number of ways, but quite soon they settled on
‘D’Argental’ (the brand name they had established for their own previous,
unsuccessful attempts at Cameo glass). Nicolas sneakily added a cross of
Lorraine to the mark to indicate when he personally made a piece. When he made
Cameo for himself pieces were signed ‘P. Nicolas’ usually followed by
‘Nancy’.Production at St Louis clearly had its limitations, the crystal glass
they used, had a more limited colour palate than he was used to at Galle and the
extra toughness of the crystal glass meant internal polishing was effectively
impossible. But using crystal did mean the cameo and wheel cutting could be much
finer.B61

My picture
is bad on this piece because it's seen such little use I was getting bad
reflections. The color matches the rest of the set perfectly, it's clean white,
shiny, beautiful and over 150 years old. The only place you'll find these soup
plates is in museums. The "Texian Campaigne" transferware pattern was introduced
about 1837; although made in Staffordshire, it was produced to appeal to
Americans. The pattern was designed to commemorate the 1835-1836 revolution
fought against Mexico by Texans for their independence (the word 'Texian' is the
British form for Texas.) The Texas Revolution (October 2, 1835 – April 21, 1836)
was a rebellion of colonists from the United States and Tejanos (Texas Mexicans)
in putting up armed resistance to the centralist government of Mexico. While the
uprising was part of a larger one, the Mexican Federalist War, that included
other provinces opposed to the regime of President Antonio López de Santa Anna,
the Mexican government believed the United States had instigated the Texas
insurrection with the goal of annexation. The Mexican Congress passed the Tornel
Decree, declaring that any foreigners against Mexican troops "will be deemed
pirates and dealt with as such, being citizens of no nation presently at war
with the Republic and under no recognized flag". Only the province of Texas
succeeded in breaking with Mexico, establishing the Republic of Texas, and
eventually being annexed by the United States. The revolution began in October
1835, after a decade of political and cultural clashes between the Mexican
government and the increasingly large population of American settlers in Texas.
The Mexican government had become increasingly centralized and the rights of its
citizens had become increasingly curtailed, particularly regarding immigration
from the United States. Colonists and Tejanos disagreed on whether the ultimate
goal was independence or a return to the Mexican Constitution of 1824. While
delegates at the Consultation (provisional government) debated the war's
motives, Texians and a flood of volunteers from the United States defeated the
small garrisons of Mexican soldiers by mid-December 1835. The Consultation
declined to declare independence and installed an interim government, whose in
led to political paralysis and a dearth of effective governance in Texas. An
ill-conceived proposal to invade Matamoros siphoned much-needed volunteers and
provisions from the fledgling Texian Army. In March 1836, a second political
convention declared independence and appointed leadership for the new Republic
of Texas.Determined to avenge Mexico's honor, Santa Anna vowed to personally
retake Texas. His Army of Operations entered Texas in mid-February 1836 and
found the Texians completely unprepared. Mexican General José de Urrea led a
contingent of troops on the Goliad Campaign up the Texas coast, defeating all
Texian troops in his path and executing most of those who surrendered. Santa
Anna led a larger force to San Antonio de Béxar (or Béxar), where his troops
defeated the Texian garrison in the Battle of the Alamo, killing almost all of
the defenders.A newly created Texian army under the command of Sam Houston was
constantly on the move, while terrified civilians fled with the army, in a melee
known as the Runaway Scrape. On March 31, Houston paused his men at Groce's
Landing on the Brazos River, and for the next two weeks, the Texians received
rigorous military training. Becoming complacent and underestimating the strength
of his foes, Santa Anna further subdivided his troops. On April 21, Houston's
army staged a surprise assault on Santa Anna and his vanguard force at the
Battle of San Jacinto. The Mexican troops were quickly routed, and vengeful
Texians executed many who tried to surrender. Santa Anna was taken hostage; in
exchange for his life, he ordered the Mexican army to retreat south of the Rio
Grande. Mexico refused to recognize the Republic of Texas, and intermittent
conflicts between the two countries continued into the 1840s. The annexation of
Texas as the 28th state of the United States, in 1845, led directly to the
Mexican–American War.tw178

While delegates at the Consultation
(provisional government) debated the war's motives, Texians and a flood of
volunteers from the United States defeated the small garrisons of Mexican
soldiers by mid-December 1835. The Consultation declined to declare independence
and installed an interim government, whose in led to political paralysis and a
dearth of effective governance in Texas. An ill-conceived proposal to invade
Matamoros siphoned much-needed volunteers and provisions from the fledgling
Texian Army. In March 1836, a second political convention declared independence
and appointed leadership for the new Republic of Texas.Determined to avenge
Mexico's honor, Santa Anna vowed to personally retake Texas. His Army of
Operations entered Texas in mid-February 1836 and found the Texians completely
unprepared. Mexican General José de Urrea led a contingent of troops on the
Goliad Campaign up the Texas coast, defeating all Texian troops in his path and
executing most of those who surrendered. Santa Anna led a larger force to San
Antonio de Béxar (or Béxar), where his troops defeated the Texian garrison in
the Battle of the Alamo, killing almost all of the defenders.A newly created
Texian army under the command of Sam Houston was constantly on the move, while
terrified civilians fled with the army, in a melee known as the Runaway Scrape.
On March 31, Houston paused his men at Groce's Landing on the Brazos River, and
for the next two weeks, the Texians received rigorous military training.
Becoming complacent and underestimating the strength of his foes, Santa Anna
further subdivided his troops. On April 21, Houston's army staged a surprise
assault on Santa Anna and his vanguard force at the Battle of San Jacinto. The
Mexican troops were quickly routed, and vengeful Texians executed many who tried
to surrender. Santa Anna was taken hostage; in exchange for his life, he ordered
the Mexican army to retreat south of the Rio Grande. Mexico refused to recognize
the Republic of Texas, and intermittent conflicts between the two countries
continued into the 1840s. The annexation of Texas as the 28th state of the
United States, in 1845, led directly to the Mexican–American War.tw178

Mark Kohler Texas Artist 1995 Cowboy Watercolor Early Work Gift to a Friendwith no damage. The estate it came from were friends of Kohler's and I'll be listing a few of his works. According to his website he's been painting commercially for over 23 years, so this would be right about that time. Measures26" x 23.5", sight is 18.5" x 16". His works are included in private and corporate collections throughout the world.

c1860 Staffordshire Prattware Transferware Plates Sebastopol and 123 Cattle Scene. 2 great pieces from mid to late 19th century. They measure 8.25" and 8 7/8". Neither have any cracks, chips, or restorations. Large one has crazing on the back and none on the front, smaller one has no crazing. Selling both pieces shown. In the 19th century, the Pratt name was associated with the fine, usually multi-coloured, transfer printed engravings used to decorate the lids of earthenware pots used for food, pharmaceutical products and toiletries. The business also produced domestic earthenware including relief moulded earthenware (especially jugs) and tableware with underglaze, multi-coloured decoration (‘Prattware’). Terracotta and parian ware were other wares, and Godden (1988) notes that there are examples of mid-19th century porcelain printed with Pratt multi-colour underglaze prints, however, these may have been bought-in ware decorated by the company. Whilst Felix Pratt was the commercial driving force behind the business, the artist was a Jesse Austin who joined Pratt in the early-1840. He was an accomplished watercolour artist and engraver and over nearly 40 years, the business produced over 550 poly chrome prints used to decorate the now well known pot lids. Pratt’s first under-glaze, polychrome pot lid was made in 1847 and was a scene ‘Grace before Meals’. Austin’s subject included royalty, famous people, city scenes – there are eleven views of London – and this portrayal of the life and times of Victorian England is one of the reasons for the lid’s popularity today. Austin also made minature watercolour copies of famous paintings and these too appear on pot lids and Prattware. Although the pot lids have become well known, the engravings were also used on the containers themselves, on plates and on other domestic earthenware manufactured by the business and it is this good-quality domestic pottery that is termed ‘Prattware’. tw176
