Vintage French Red and White Enamel Kitchen Canisters Cafe, Sucre, Chicoree circa mid 20th century Graniteware. Cool vintage set, they were marked on the base but it appears someone scratched off the marks. I've seen this with a lot of things over the years. I've found unmarked Steuben glass signed Tiffany and vice versa, can't always explain it. Regardless, they are cute and have some age on them. Nice practical use every day sizes with the largest being 6" tall x 4.25" wide. B36

1920's Awaji Japanese Deco Art Pottery Vase Tubelined Squeezbag Decoration in the Style of Moorcroft. Very unusual and wonderful piece. Period art deco, signed Made in Japan and the Awahi Kiln Mark. The outlines of the hand painted decoration are Tubelined. 7.5" tall x 7.25" wide at rim. No cracks, chips, or restorations, some expected crazing, but no stains. While the decoration is also Gouda style, this is really next level quality with the tubelined squeezbag and the great matte glaze. In my opinon this would be a Book Cover type example for a few diferent collecting areas, it's fresh to the market for the first time since the internet. Awaji pottery has got its name after the Japanese island at which it was made during a period of about one hundred years, between 1830 and 1939. Most of the pieces we find are made from the mid 1870's when Awaji began to export its products, to the mid to late 1930's when the last of the kilns closed. Earlier wares from the active period of this kiln catered to the Asian taste and could be found imitating Chinese monochromes from the Kangxi period and later. Wares from the turn of the century, the shapes got more inspired by the western art movement such as Art Deco (Jugend) and Art Noveau. Awaji pottery is usually hand thrown. The body is made of high-fired, white or cream colored clay. Footrims can vary from pink or buff to white or grey. The glazes are lead based and often brilliant in tone. They are typically translucent and have a fine crackle. The lead in the glaze gives the colors brilliance and makes the translucent enamels glassy and often iridescent. Most common are the green and yellow Awaji monochromes. The yellow can range from pale lemon to deep amber but also cobalt blue, aubergine, light green, blue, light and dark turquoise, mirror-black, and burdy occurs. Other wares can feature two-tone glazes, three-color glazes that are very similar to Chinese sancai), pieces, with incised decoration (most commonly featuring iris flowers), and applied relief decoration. Also more gaudy examples from the last decade are Flambé and drip glazed wares similar to Japanese Sumida and Chinese Shiwan pottery, or later Jindezheng Jun or transmutation glazes, with generous layers of thick glaze B35

Incredible piece rare to one of a kind. 14.25" diagonal framed with a 5.25" plaque. No significant issues to frame, no issues with plaque. 30 years or so ago someone did a funny job of securing the plaque in the frame. I'm leaving it this way because the plaque is obviously not damaged and I uncovered just enough to reveal the mark, there is likely an artist signature somewhere but I don't think it matters because it is obviously an accomplished artist. Made from cigar boxes as shown from the exposed section on the base.
From a San Antonio, Texas estate.
The first picture is actually the back of the box with the initials on the front
and the date on the back.

Tramp art
Tramp art is a style of woodworking which emerged in America the latter half of
the nineteenth century. Some of tramp art's defining characteristics include
chip or notch carving, the reclaimation of cheap or available wood such as that
from cigar boxes and shipping crates, the use of simple tools such as penknives,
and the layering of materials into geometric shapes through glue or nails. One
technique used in tramp art is Crown of Thorns joinery.

History
Although widespread use of wooden cigar boxes in the 1850s sparked involvement
in tramp art, it was most prevalent during the Great Depression. Tramp art was
made around the world but it prospered in the United States. Examples can be
found in every state. The most common forms were the box and the frame and
although there were no rules or patterns to lend commonality in the artists’
work there were objects made in every conceivable shape and size including full
sized furniture and objects of whimsy.

Tramp art was a democratic art form made wherever the raw materials used in its
construction were found. It appealed to men who might have made an important
body of work such as ‘Sunflower’ artist John Martin Zubersky (active c. 1912 –
1920) or the wonderfully expressive wall pockets by John Zadzora (active circa
1910) but also to men who might have made one piece in their lifetime. It was
easy to make and appealed to anyone who had a desire to take a pocketknife to
wood.

There were countless men, some women, and even children who historically
constructed tramp art.

Origins of the Term
A 1959 article by Frances Lichten in Pennsylvania Folklife used the term "tramp
work" to describe crafts constructed from waste materials such as discarded
cigar boxes and assembled with a penknife. Contemporary scholars and art dealers
such as Clifford A. Wallach have noted that while this art form may have been
practiced among America's itinerant population, it was by no means unique to
them and was practiced by factory workers, farmers, and laborers in other
occupations.

In 1975 Helaine Fendelman published the first book on tramp art, Tramp Art an
Itinerant's Folk Art. The book acted as a catalog to the first museum show on
the art form sponsored by the American Museum of Folk Art.
b30

c1870's Saloon Back Bar Liquor Bottles with Etched Gilt Advertising San
Francisco Nestor Maryland Rye Gibson's Whiskey Pennsylvania
The Nestor Maryland Rye bottle was actually from a distillery named KOPPEL &
DWAN that operated in San Francisco, CA 1877-1878, it's extremely rare blown
bottle, it's not etched just gold gilding. They're both rare. Largest is 9 1/8",
other is 6.75". The Gibson's bottle is engraved with gilding in the engraving.
The facets are polished and it has a ground pontil. Originally, Gibson was a
producer of American, not Canadian, rye. John Gibson was a western Pennsylvania
distiller who started up in the 1830s, and by 1856, according to Canadian whisky
guru Davin de Kergommeaux, his operation spanned 40 acres alongside the
Monongahela. Once Prohibition rolled around, though, the distillery shut down
and was demolished. A New York company called Schenley Industries bought the
rights to the Gibson’s name and held onto them until 1972, when Schenley started
using it for Canadian whisky produced at a distillery it owned in Valleyfield,
Quebec.
No cracks or chips, or excessive wear to the bottles. 1930's Yale Town Padlock From Mount Royal Hotel Baltimore MD with Room key and Tag. This is a cool set I'm certain it's been together since it's beginning. The lock works with the key inside it. This was likely Hotel property as. The Mount Royal Hotel and Apartments were designed in 1899 by the well-respected Baltimore architect, Edward H. Glidden. The Neo-Italian Renaissance style buildings were constructed in early 1900; the 103 East Mount Royal Avenue building served as an upscale hotel and the 101 East Mount Royal Avenue building contained all upscale apartments. Centered in the rich artistic and cultural life concentrated in the then city’s center, Mount Vernon, Baltimore, The Mount Royal Hotel and Apartments were a very desirable place to visit as a hotel guest, or to live in as a resident of the apartments. Once the Pennsylvania Train Station was completed in 1911, The Mount Royal’s appeal only increased, as the property’s location attracted daily commuters to and from Washington, DC. Even in 1911, the train ride from Penn Station to Union Station was just 40 minutes. b12

c1900 Michigan State University Morill Hall Wall Plaque Lead/Pewter Relief Bust
in Mission Oak Frame. I bought this piece a few years ago from a woman that told
me she purchased it from some sort of liquidation sale Michigan State
University. I'm still looking for the piece of paper where I had her write it
down but It might not turn up for years. I did find that Morill hall was
demolished in 2013 which was about 4 years before I bought this piece. I know
for a fact it was MSU and I know it was Morill Hall I just don't remember the
date she acquired it, not sure if I asked. It seems Morill hall was a women's
building in 1900. This piece is for sure that old. I would bet my life it's from
1900-1910. It's unsigned, I don't know who the artist or the woman is. I think
there's a good chance they're both someone famous. To me this looks to be a one
of a kind handmade piece and I don't think there could've been may artists at
that time or now capable of such a feat. It has minor wear as shown. It is very
heavy. It measures 16" wide x 20" tall. This piece represents quite a bit not
just for people interested in Michigan stuff but It's an important part of
Women's Educational History and the evolution of this country.

In December 2012, History said goodbye to Morrill Hall and moved to the Old
Horticulture Building.

Opened in 1900, Morrill Hall was first named the Women’s Building. Though women
were admitted to MSU in small numbers beginning in 1870, a women’s course was
not introduced until 1896. As the number of women rose, the university need a
dormitory—the Women’s Building. The Dean of women had a residence on the first
floor and home economics instructors lived on the upper floors. There was space
for 120 women students and a dining room, cooking and sewing laboratories, a
woodshop, music rooms, and a gym. According to a catalog from the day, women
residents were subject “to only such restraints as would be expected in a well
regulated Christian family.” By 1926, modifications allowed for the housing of
200 women in the building.

In the mid-1930s, increased enrollment in the Women’s course made necessary the
construction of new dormitories. As women students moved into new buildings,
Morrill Hall was converted in 1937 into classrooms and offices for the Liberal
Arts Division. That year the building was officially named Morrill Hall in honor
of Vermont Senator Justin Smith Morrill. He had been instrumental in forging the
federal Morrill Act, which established land-grant colleges. The act was critical
in the development of higher education in the United States.

As part of the Liberal Arts Division, History, along with six other departments,
established itself in Morrill in 1937. As the department grew, it came to occupy
all of the third and fourth floors and parts of the first floor and garden
level. English occupied the second floor and Religious Studies part of the
first.

About 100 years after its construction, Morrill’s age began to show. Inspections
revealed deterioration in the building’s wooden infrastructure and shallow
foundation. In 2010, the MSU Board of Regents decided that repairs were not
feasible and approved a plan for demolition.

Events then unfolded quickly. In summer 2012, English and Religious Studies were
moved from Morrill to Wells Hall. Romance

Old photo of Old Horticulture Building
Old Horticulture Building

Languages, which had been in Old Horticulture, was also moved to Wells. Crews
then did minor renovations on Old Hort. History was the last department to
vacate Morrill during a move which took several weeks.

Morrill Hall was demolished in summer 2013. In spring 2014, the Morrill plot was
transformed into a green space with benches and gardens arranged in manner so as
to emulate the long, wide halls that characterized the old structure.

Needless to say, the move to Old Hort was time consuming. Faculty packed their
own belongings, most of which consisted of books. Crate after crate was then
taken by university movers 100 yards across campus. Faculty then unpacked their
things and began the process of settling in.

Old Hort lacks some of the charm of Morrill. Gone are the high ceilings,
hardwood floors, large windows looking out at the green, and spacious offices.
But Old Hort has proven to have some advantages. The heating system works well,
there are no rats, bats or birds inside the building, and the offices, though
smaller, are comfortable and roomy enough for multiple bookcases.

MSU sponsored some updates of Old Hort. But there is still work to be done.
Alumni and friends of the department interested in sponsoring room updates and
in conference room, office and workspace naming rights are encouraged to contact
the department chair for conversations.

History has started a Morrill Fund to honor the old building and to advance
faculty research. For more information, please contact the department chair,
Walter Hawthorne.

*Some information for this piece was derived from History Professor Madison
Kuhn’s Michigan State The First One Hundred Years (East Lansing, Michigan State
University Press, 1955).

18th century Pewter Reproduction Lot Antique. This is a lot of what after close examination believe to be reproduction 18th century pewter. It's a very old lot probably early to mid 19th century. I believe much time and effort was dedicated to making these pieces look authentic and old. They would look great in any colonial setting and I believe would fool or puzzle pretty much anyone even after close examination. Selling the whole lot. Largest tankard is 10.5" tall. tw94
