sz8 Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Cheyenne, b. 1933) Sterling and turquoise ring<br><br>Ben Nighthorse Campbell was born to a poor family in Auburn, California in 1933.<br>He grew up to be a Northern Cheyenne chief, Korean War veteran, judo wrestler,<br>U.S. Olympian, jewelry designer and the first Native American serving in the<br>U.S. Senate.<br><br>Campbell dropped out of high school and joined the air force, serving in the<br>Korean War. While serving in the military he received his GED high school<br>diploma. He studied the martial arts and became a judo wrestler. He captained<br>the judo team in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. After returning to the States he<br>graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in physical education<br>and fine arts. He also attended Meiji University in Tokyo and received more than<br>200 awards for his jewelry designs.<br><br>Campbell began his political career in 1982 becoming a state legislator in the<br>state of Colorado. L'argentiere Zuni, Dan Simplicio (1917-1969) apprese l'arte della creazione di gioielli da suo zio, Juan DeDios, uno dei primi argentieri Zuni. Started silver work in 1991. He learned silver<br>work by watching his brother Andy, David Donovan was born in 1968 in Gallup, New<br>Mexico USA. He began his silversmith career in 1991. He is Andy Cadman’s brother<br>and Gary and Sunshine Reeves’s half brother. They are all artists who create<br>some of the finest Native American jewelry in the southwest. He, like all of<br>them, creates jewelry in the Navajo revival style.<br><br>His late brother, David Reeves introduced him to this trade, through David he<br>was introduced to Eric Bonecutter of Albuquerque, New Mexico. From the beginning of my training as a metalsmith, I was taught the essentials of jewelry fabrication, but I was never told what to make or how it should look. Luckily having my father as a teacher, renowned lapidary artist, Richard Chavez, the idea of “less is more” was already there. It was an idea so fundamental in my artistic development that excess is still something I shy away from today. All of my metalwork takes into consideration a balance of texture and light. I have found over the years these elements can overwhelm one another, disrupting the aesthetic beauty of a piece. As I evolve as a metalsmith I’ve learned materials such as sterling silver, 14k gold, and semi-precious stones have married well with the abstract approach of my designs. While most of my work consists of non-representational styling, personal life experiences have added a great deal to my creations. It is because of this, the narrative plays such an important role in some of my larger vessels.
