Willie Yazzie Sr, Navajo vintage sterling silver bear paw belt buckle. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Weight and measurements in pictures, circa third quarter of the 20th century. Fits a 1.5" belt. After the success of the overlay designs made at the Hopi Guild many other silversmiths and shops incorporated overlay in their designs (see Overlay is Not Always Hopi Made). Navajo trader Dean Kirk opened his own trading post at Manuelito, New Mexico (between Gallup and the Arizona border) by January 1941. The silver work made in Dean’s shop was typically Navajo tourist type designs and hallmarked UITA22 (under the auspices of the United Indian Traders Association) until about 1951. That’s when Kirk designed a series of overlay pins to be made by Navajo smiths in his employ incorporating Hohokam and Mimbres designs. These designs proved to be very popular, as a 1958 newspaper advertisement for Enchanted Mesa in Albuquerque promoted “Dean Kirk’s Navajo Overlay Silver”. The overlay pieces made at Kirk’s shop were rarely hallmarked. However, one of the Navajo silversmiths who worked for Dean Kirk was Willie Yazzie, he made his own hallmark and used it on pieces he made in Kirk’s shop.Much of the following information was relayed to Alan Ferg (archivist and archaeologist at Arizona State Museum) by William P. (Willie) Yazzie, Jr, in February 2018. Ferg’s investigation of an overlay belt buckle in his possession, lacking a hallmark, has led to previously unrecorded information about Willie Yazzie, as well as the identification of an additional hallmark used by the artist.Willie Yazzie made the overlay bolo at Dean Kirk’s shop, it includes a deer and stylized Hopi designs; a small piece of turquoise is inlaid flush in the deer’s body. His Navajo wedding basket pin incorporates a small piece of copper to symbolize the red band in traditional wedding baskets. Willie Yazzie made the overlay bolo at Dean Kirk’s shop, it includes a deer and stylized Hopi designs; a small piece of turquoise is inlaid flush in the deer’s body. His Navajo wedding basket pin incorporates a small piece of copper to symbolize the red band in traditional wedding baskets.According to Social Security records, Willie A. Yazzie was born at Chinle, Arizona in 1928. His son says he learned silverwork at Dean Kirk’s trading post in Manuelito in the early 1950s, and created his touchmark (or hallmark) no later than 1960, and after that time his pieces made at Dean Kirk’s would have included his gourd dipper hallmark. His designs often incorporated animal figures such as roadrunners or Navajo designs including Yeis and Father Sky. He never added “tamp work,” or a textured pattern to the background designs. In 1960 Ansel Hall, concessionaire at Mesa Verde National Park, was looking for a silversmith to demonstrate at the park during the summers months, Dean Kirk recommended Willie Yazzie and he was hired by Hall. Willie worked at Mesa Verde in the summers from 1960 to 1983, except for 1965 when he was sick. Yazzie created a special hallmark to denote pieces he made at Mesa Verde. The mark depicts Square Tower House, a ruin within the park, and was included with his gourd dipper mark during the summers of 1960-1964 and 1966-1983.

sz10.5 Jim Harrison Navajo sterling silver intarsia inlay turquoise/coral ring. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Nice ring from the last quarter of the 20th century. Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. Jimmy Harrison is an authentic Native American Indian. He is a member of the Red House Clan. He was born into the Navajo Reservation in 1952. Jim began his professional career as a jewelry craftsman in 1981. He was taught all the fundamentals of working with silver at the age of 16 when he enrolled in a silversmithing class in high school. He credits Preston Monongye and Jessie Monongya for his success as a fine jewelry artisan. They shared their techniques with him and opened up his mind to his own designs. His designs are reflective of the bright stars of the New Mexico nights and the geometric forms of the landscape. They all play a part in his finely detailed inlay jewelry. With sleek and contemporary shapes and designs, he manages to balance the flavor of tradition with his stylized approach to Indian imagery. It is believed that Preston, Jesse, and Jim were among the first jewelers to work extensively with inlay of multicolored stones and shells with silver. His designs continue to change and they include Hopi and Navajo Sunfaces, and the Yei- bei-chei. He experiments with landscapes and galaxies. On occasion, Jim adds a rug design as a border to his beautiful designs. The work of Jimmy Harrison is very distinctive and easily recognizable. He works primarily with sterling silver and authentic multi-colored inlayed stones such as, coral, turquoise, lapis, sugalite, mother of pearl stones, and other various materials. His colorful and innovative inlays in his jewelry are inspired by the natural gifts that Mother Earth and Father Sky provide to each and every one of us. His creations include rings, necklaces, bolos, bracelets, earrings, and concho belts. He stamps his jewelry as, Jimmy Harrison.

This process gives each piece a unique texture and form. His jewelry often features bold, symmetrical designs and is frequently set with turquoise or other natural stones. Harrison’s jewelry reflects a commitment to quality and tradition. Every piece is handmade using time-honored techniques, and his designs stay true to classic Navajo forms while incorporating his own style. Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. Adam Fierro, a Native jeweler from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Adam is a Mestizo descendant of Spanish, the Santa Clara Pueblo and White Mountain Apache however Adam is not registered and does not claim tribal affiliation. My name is Adam Fierro, I like to make contemporary style jewelry, something that stands out from the rest. I have a bit of a southwestern flair but a contemporary piece consists of it being unique even to other pieces that I do. Nothing ever stays the same, I cant even duplicate my jewelry even if I tried. I like to do different kinds of insects, like scorpions, spiders, even lizards or anything that will challenge me in the silver work. Its great to do something that nobody has ever seen before and difficult to duplicate. Look for one of a kind type jewelry. There are certain styles out there that you see over and over again but finding something that is just as unique as you are as a person, thats what people should look for in a piece of art!

sz9 Benny Armijo (1937-2022) Navajo Opal ring in sterling silver. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver. Nice ring from the last quarter of the 20th century. Some expected wear, weight and measurements in pictures. I believe this to be a natural Opal as Benny was very well respected and made this later in his career. He always used really high grade materials even earlier in his career. Benny Armijo (1937-2022). Benny was a renowned master Navajo silversmith who specialized in this complex inlay and "corn row" type cobblestone inlay using high quality stones. His jewelry was featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and was collected by many high-profile artists from James Taylor, Charlie Daniels, to Hank Williams Jr. His pieces can be seen on many album covers of top music groups and are highly collectable today. His incredible sense of humor was as well-known as his jewelry. He was simply the most generous man that one could ever imagine, always helping complete strangers he encountered along the way. He was active from the early 70‘s until the late 20th century.. His older mark from the 1970‘s looks like a tadpole and has been misattributed to "Edward Zuni", but I‘m 100% sure this is Benny Armijo‘s work and hallmark, it‘s been confirmed by his living relatives. Benny was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico Benito M Armijo Jr The older stamp he first used was to represent the letter C and letter M which stood for Chief Marcos. Many years later maybe around 1989 he stamped his jewelry with Benny Armijo. He lived in California for many years and returned to New Mexico and passed away January 2022. He was known for his stone inlay on what he called a Hopi wedding band in which all the stones were inlaid inside the ring or bracelet. Allison "Snowhawk" Lee (1958 - 2022) was an award-winning Navajo artist from Mexican Springs, New Mexico. He was the third oldest of eight (four brothers and three sisters). Allison lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico with his three sons, Wyatt, Kyle and Trent. He enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping with his family. When there was a boom in Native American jewelry in the early seventies, Allison’s mother and uncle started making Squash Blossoms. At the young age of 14, Allison was asked by his mother to make a silver ring with a turquoise stone. He made the ring well and so began his interest in jewelry making. Allison graduated from Tohatchi High School, during the summers he worked at various silver shops in the Gallup area, where he perfected the methods of silversmithing from the top silversmiths in the shops. Allison began competing in juried art shows back in 1988 and continued this tradition of competition throughout his life. He received many top awards, such as: Best of Division at the Santa Fe Indian Market, the George C. West Memorial Award for Excellence in Silver Jewelry which he won three years in a row. Allison was asked to join in on making a piece for the millennium sampler concha belt along with twelve renowned Indian Market jewelers. He was very honored to be chosen to participate in this collaboration. The proceeds of this auction benefited the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA). Allison was a highly skilled and respected silversmith, loved throughout the field of Native American jewelry. Sadly, Allison passed away in June of 2022. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy lives on in his sons‘ beautiful jewelry.
