He is a fifth-generation silversmith. Born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, Harry Morgan began casting jewelry at age seven. His mother Louise inspired him to make jewelry in the old style.The Navajo Tribe offered him a four-year scholarship in engineering, but being a rodeo cowboy was his dream, at the time. He ultimately returned to his passion for silversmithing, and became a silversmith in 1965. He spent most of his life in the Gallup, NM area, and at one point opened a jewelry supply store in Crownpoint, NM.He also operated a smithing studio, and employed many smiths who would also emulate the classic revival style. One of those employed was well-known silversmith Kirk Smith. Many of Harry Morgans stamps were inherited from his parents and uncle, or made by him.Harry Morgan was married to Navajo silversmith Betty Joe, and is the nephew of accomplished silversmiths Charlie Bitsue and Ike Wilson. Circa last quarter of the 20th century.Hopi silversmith Jason Takala was born July 19, 1955. Jason attended high school in Woodstock, Vermont, but the walls of his dorm were bare. To spice things up, he painted a mural depicting a landscape cut by a waterfall. Then he attached a frame around it. When school officials saw the work, they were floored by its beauty and promptly added art classes to Takala’s schedule. This was his first real attempt at painting.He portrays himself as almost a passive participant in the creation of his popular pieces. “I take my direction from the silver,” says the Holbrook resident and father of five. “In a sense, it talks to me.”In the 1980”s he moved to Old Oraibi on the Hopi reservation, where his wife, Margie, had grown up. “After that I really started creating,” he says. Everything is so calm there, your mind goes to a different level. It all came to me then.”Takala is known for his man-in-the-maze design which represents man emerging from the center of the Earth and migrating to the four directions. He taught his trade to his grandson who also became famous. He had his own gallery in Sedona, Arizona for many years which he sold in 1975. He partnered with Ralph Lauren on several projects and unfortunately died in 2006. His work has been featured in Arizona Highways magazine many times.
