Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver.Lorraine descends from a family of Zuni jewelers; the daughter of Alice and Duane Quam and grandchild of Doris and Wayne Ondelacy. Silversmith is in her blood and she was taught the craft as a youngster by her parents. Lorraine recalls making her first piece in 1971 whilst still living at home with her parents. She describes their process of making jewelry starting with shaping the stones to get them closer to the shape needed. Lorraine then grinds the stones on a 100 grit wheel without using any water. One the stone is close to the shape, she uses a sealing wax melted to a stick (size depends on the stone) and uses the stick instead of hands to perfect the size of the stone. Luwayne then finishes with the silverwork. Lorraine and Luwayne are prolific and their work is a mixture of pass-downs and newer designs. She has received recognition for her art including being published in ‘Zuni Jewelry,’ by Theda and Michael Bassman. Listed with ExportYourStore.com

Circa last quarter of the 20th century. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver.Patrick is a full blood, enrolled citizen of the Navajo Nation. He was born on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, where he attended boarding school. His family moved to Flagstaff, Arizona, where he completed his education through high school. He studied computer programming and business administration at Yavapai College and at the University of Arizona. On a whim, he traveled for a year across the U.S. in an old Ford truck, financing the trip by selling Navajo jewelry he made by hand on the road using traditional techniques learned from his family. After crafting old-style jewelry for a while, he yearned to acquire expertise in more advanced metalsmithing techniques to create the exciting contemporary jewelry designs that he envisioned.Eventually he returned to his hometown of Flagstaff to study art in earnest. He completed his BFA and Master of Arts degrees at Northern Arizona University. His M.A. is in Jewelry and Metalsmithing. Patrick later won an Arlene Feddes fellowship for Excellence in Art from the Southwestern Association of Indian Arts (SWAIA). His jewelry was selected to travel across the U.S. for three years on the ArtTrain USA—a traveling art museum—when it was curated to display contemporary art of a small number of Native American Indian artists from across the nation. His art was purchased for display at The British Museum in London and has also been featured in art exhibits, quality jewelry books, and other publications. Listed with ExportYourStore.com

Age appropriate wear. Fits a 1.75" belt.Lee, Clarence and RussellClarence and Russell Lee: Father and Son Navajo Silversmiths:Born in 1952 in Ft. Defiance, AZ, Clarence Lee ws the second oldest of six children. His parents, Tom and Emma Rose Lee raised their children in Twin Lakes, NM. Currently, all his siblings work with silver to one degree or another with the exception of a sister who works in the health care system.Clarence learned his craft from his late father Tom Lee who built and owned a Trading Post in Twin Lakes and learned how to make silver jewelry to supplement his income when business at the Trading Post was slow. Tom Lee fought in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, was a POW for four years and a survivor of the infamous “Death March of Bataan.” He later became New Mexico’s first Native American State Senator. Clarence’s mother, Emma was recognized in her own right as the maker of the first Navajo Nation Flag.Clarence discovered his love of art work in elementary school when a teacher saw promise and encouraged him to pursue his talent. Later on at Tohatchi High School in New Mexico he met his first real art teacher Mrs. Hale. Clarence favored his art classes over academic classes because he suffered from dyslexia. In school he made metal sculptures and worked in oil and watercolors. (Clarence still paints occasionally) Mrs. Hale also saw potential yet admonished him, “Don’t start giving stuff away.” Her comments did not discourage him and while he was still in high school continued selling his jewelry to teachers. In addition to his art, Clarence was interested in rodeo and participated in calf and team roping events. Throughout his high school years, Clarence continues to help his father sell traditional jewelry. When financial pressures grew Clarence left school just short of his high school graduation to support his family. His first pieces of silver work were traditional hammering and stamp work set with stones. Clarence developed his own unique style almost by accident when he shaped a piece of silver resembling a dog. “I did that for eight months and sort of fell over backwards into storyteller style. I made my first bracelet and pin. I didn’t set any stones in my work until later.” HIs ideas come from his childhood memories of summers spent with his great grandmother at her summer home in the mountains. He remembers herding sheep and cattle near his home with friends and relatives. Images of windmills, water barrels, old trucks, wood stoves, dogs and rabbits are reflected in his artwork today. Along the way he has added whimsical animals, cowboys, dancers, children and many other images to his collection.Clarence prefers to sell his jewelry at Indian shows and present his work in competitions and exhibitions. HIs first show was at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. In early years he struggled to make a name in the art world and support his family. Fortunately, the first few shows provided the emerging silversmith encouragement. “I got a good response and it just opened up from there.” HIs first competitive show was at the Navajo Nation Fair where his work garnered a first place ribbon in 1977. “ I started signing using an engraver at the beginning, using my family’s registered brand stamp. Using the brand was my dad’s idea, but by 1988 I added my own signature.”In 1976, Clarence married and later that year his son Russell was born. By 1980 Clarence was a divorced single parent raising his four year old son and began taking his son along to all his shows. “When Russell was about ten or so he wanted a toy he saw at the mall. I told him you have to earn it by selling something first.” From there Russell was encouraged to try his hand as a silversmith. Russell followed his father’s footsteps and eventually entered various junior competitions winning numerous awards for his work. Russell hoped to go to college after he graduated from high school but during his senior year Russell’s responsibilities in the family jewelry business began to rapidly grow. Russell postponed his college plans to tend the family business, a business that has not slowed down since. Now as an adult, Russell helps full time with the jewelry business work. An apprentice and talented artist in his own right, Russell fashions most of the tiny figures his father incorporates into his storyteller images. Russell also acts as manager for the family business, handling the paperwork, safeguarding the the valuable inventory and ensuring everything is ready for the next show. By Russell handling the administrative responsibilities Clarence had the opportunity to go too as many as 25-30 shows per year. For now, Russell loves making jewelry and hopes to continue his education in the future.Tom passed on to young Clarence lessons he learned as a young silversmith. “If you want to do well, you have to have plenty of inventory on hand.” Incorporating this lesson has come at a high price for this industrious silversmith. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome now restricts the amount of pieces Clarence can create in a day, usually fifteen to twenty pins. He works diligently to maintain a large inventory for each of the 300+ designs he created. Because of Clarence’s physical limitations, Russell now does most of the design cutting including working on his own projects having acquired his own hallmark stamp in 1998. Clarence has done all the stone cutting for each piece for eighteen years, since 1988. “I do the stamp work and everything else, then gives it back to Russell to put on the findings and buffing.” For several years now father and son have collaborated on ideas for new pieces and new techniques for their work. Most silversmiths create or adapt equipment to facilitate their style of work or particular circumstances. In Clarence’s case it is the adaptation of IV bags for the water drip on his stone cutting and grinding equipment. Twice a year he puts all his scrap silver together and melts it down using the castings for special pieces. Many of the techniques used to create his jewelry are developed to suit Lee’s unique style. As he creates more images, he designs new tools and develops accompanying methods so his craft continues to evolve. His material includes twelve to twenty gauge silver, copper, brass, gold and using fine saw blades to create the intricate appliqué’ work he’s known for. He designs his own stamps using old drill bits to create a variety of textures and surfaces. He incorporates several methods of casting including steam casting, spin casting and old traditional tufa stone casting taught to him by his father.Clarence can see the results in his mind even before he actually finishes a new piece. His famous designs are usually sketched out wile sitting in airports, during down time at hotels or even selling at his booth. He tries to keep the merchandise interesting and fresh, trying out new designs for a minimum of four to five months. “If it doesn’t sell then we abandon it, but you never know. We used to make trucks, but sales slowed so much we stopped making them. Then as soon as we stopped people started asking for the trucks again. We now make them in four different sizers, but for the largest one there are two dozen separate pieces of silver that we have to solder together to make that truck which is our 3-D business card holder. That truck was done for fun and entered into the Gallup Ceremonial. It was something different; we thought would get a lot of attention. It worked because a lady from the British Museum came by and bought some pieces.” She interviewed Clarence over a period of three days. “The truck pin is our signature piece, as is the truck bracelet.”Three museums currently display pieces made by Clarence and Russell. You can see a bracelet on display at the San Diego Museum of Man in San Diego, California. In June 2006, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, Indiana purchased the 3-D card holder, “Mr. Yazzie goes to town” that will remain in their permanent collection. There are also several pieces on display at the British Museum in London, England.Among silversmiths, Clarence admires Jake Livingston, whom he describes as, “A nice guy who does nice silver work.” Clarence has built a successful career as a silversmith, doing what he loves and working alongside his son. And when he needs a break from his silversmith work he can cross the yard to his welding shop where his welding accomplishments include a barbecue grill with a smoker and designing a dumping trailer for his tractor and then it’s back to work Listed with ExportYourStore.com

Cippy Crazy Horse Cochiti pueblo sterling silver beaded pendant necklace. Selling the necklace shown, circa last quarter of the 20th century. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in the photos.Cippy Crazy HorseBorn Cipriano Quintana to renowned jewelers Terecita and Joe H. Quintana, Cippy CrazyHorse has carried on the classic traditional Pueblo design his parents started. To these classic designs, CrazyHorse brings his personal style. The bold, deep stamp and chisel designs on thick gauge silver are his trademark. Much of the thick gauge silver comes from melting scrap silver into ingots a process the “old timers incorporated. CrazyHorse says of his work, “There are traditional classic styles in silver jewelry, the Navajo and the Pueblo , and I do the latter; from cuff bracelets to concho belts, ranger set buckles and bead necklaces.Following high school, CrazyHorse attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales for two and a half years and then served in the US Navy until 1972. Upon returning home to Cochiti, CrazyHorse worked as an electricians assistant on the construction of Cochiti Dam, but an injury in 1974 curtailed that line of work. According to CrazyHorse, the injury “forced his hand at silversmithing. He started with the smaller tasks of making silver chains and gradually taught himself the old style of silversmithing. With much support and encouragement from his father and his wife, Susan, his silversmithing began earnestly. CrazyHorse has received much recognition for his work, having garnered his share of ribbons at the Southwestern Association of Indian Arts Indian Market in Santa Fe over the course of the past 35 years. He is considered a “Master Silversmith and his work is numerous collections and books on Native American jewelry. In the August, 2008 issue of The Santa Fean, Cippy was featured as one of “Seven Standouts of Indian Market. He has been featured in many other newspaper and magazine articles over the years, and in several museum and private exhibitions throughout the country. His work is highly sought after in Japan , where his classic designs are admired as well as his dedication to a traditional lifestyle at Cochiti Pueblo. Cippy and his work are featured in the “Artists Handmade section of the April 2011 issue of the Japanese (American Western Culture) magazine, “Free and Easy.Cippy has also been a Jewelry Judge at SWAIA Indian Market a number of times, where his unique sense of humor certainly enlivens the proceedings. In 1990, along with Yazzie Johnson, he curated the jewelry exhibit Steady Hands, White Metal at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe . CrazyHorse says of his work, “When I am making something, I hope I can inspire someone somewhere to admire the simplicity of the beauty in one of my pieces. I have won awards and ribbons, but when I see or hear the appreciation and happiness my work brings to those who have pieces, it makes me want to do more. Listed with ExportYourStore.com

Richard Chavez San Felipe Pueblo coral, lapis, turquoise inlaid pendant. Selling the pendant shown, circa last quarter of the 20th century. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in the photos.Richard Chavez was born in 1949 and raised in San Felipe Pueblo, one of the more conservative and traditional Pueblos of New Mexico. San Felipe Pueblo holds the distinction of being one of the only Pueblo communities located alongside the Rio Grande River. In the Early 70s, Richard worked as an architectural draftsman for Harvey S. Hoshour, A.I.A. Mr. Hoshour came to Albuquerque, New Mexico after working for the Bauhaus architect Mies Van de Rohe. The Bauhaus philosophy emphasized the principles of purity, sparseness, and balance that later influenced the designs by which Richards jewelry would become known.During Richards employment in Mr. Hoshours firm, he also attended the University of New Mexicos School of Architecture. It was at that time he began experimenting in metal fabrication and designing jewelry to supplement his income.Richard left his architectural studies and employment in 1976 to become a full-time jeweler. What started as a means to supplant his studies and part-time employment has become a thirty-two year career. From start to finish, each piece of jewelry involves many steps; beginning with sketches to determine certain designs, followed by soldering, sanding, cutting, polishing and the lapidary process. Each step is done entirely by Richard, with the lapidary process being the most intensive. This time-consuming labor of love begins with Richard buying only the best raw materials which he then cuts to become part of his signature designs set into a silver or gold frame. Every stone is cut rough, ground into a shape and polished before it is even set into place. Each stone requires a minimum of ten steps before it is ready for final polishing and setting.Name recognition has come from the high standards Richard sets for his jewelry designs. His work has received numerous awards since his first competition in 1976. Yet in 1990, Richard stopped entering juried competitions, feeling he no longer required competitive validation. Instead, he finds the positive reactions and comments from the public and his esteemed clientele to be more gratifying than any award he could receive.Duane draws his inspiration from the beauty of Hopi Lands and from Hopi spiritual beliefs. Like all Pueblo peoples, his prayers always include prayers for the world and for other peoples before his prayers for the Hopi People and himself. His sincere hope is that his jewelry brings blessings and serenity to all who wear it.Duane is the recipient of numerous awards including Judge’s Choice at the University of San Diego Show in 2003; Best of Division at the American Indian Art Festival and Market (Dallas, Texas) in 2003; and Best in Division at the Southwest Native American Promotions Show (Fountain Hills, Arizona) in 2002. Circa last quarter of the 20th century.Dean Sandoval Jr. is a master Navajo jewelry artist whose work reflects strong family roots and a deep respect for Diné silversmithing traditions. Born in Albuquerque and raised in the Navajo community of Tohajiilee (formerly Cañoncito), Dean learned the art of silversmithing at an early age. Jewelry making is a deeply shared family legacy; his mother, Alta Sandoval, his sister Bonnie, and his wife, Rosella, are all highly respected silversmiths. Today, Dean and his family continue to live on their ranch in Tohajiilee, where they raise rodeo bulls and pass down traditional Navajo and Apache ways to their children.Specializing in handcrafted Navajo sterling silver, Dean is celebrated by collectors for reviving the classic “Fred Harvey era style” of Southwestern jewelry. His intricate pieces frequently feature oxidized silver with an old patina, traditional stamp work, appliqués, and striking repoussé accents. He carefully balances these dynamic metalwork techniques with premium natural stones, showcasing highly collectible spiderweb turquoise, classic red coral, and malachite.By remaining deeply grounded in traditional methods, Dean Sandoval Jr. creates authentic Native American jewelry that is both timeless and wearable. Each individually crafted piece represents the technical precision, enduring craftsmanship, and cultural vitality of the Navajo Nation. Listed with ExportYourStore.com
