Mid Century Hector Aguilar Taxco 940 silver bracelet. Fits up to a 7" wrist, the<br>way it's made it naturally tapers with the wrist 1.25" wide, 58.1 grams with no<br>issues.<br><br>Who was silversmith Hector Aguilar?<br>Hector Aguilar was a master silversmith, jewelry maker, and the first graduate<br>from William Spratling’s famous apprenticeships in Taxco, Mexico. He met<br>Spratling almost by chance while bringing a load of tourists to Taxco from<br>Mexico City in the 1930s. Aguilar was one of Spratling’s best pupils, who often<br>worked with close-to-pure silver (rated at 980 instead of the 925 of sterling<br>silver on the silver scale). Aguilar was also a great businessman who only<br>stayed at Spratling’s workshop for three years before finding investors for his<br>own workshop, Taller Borda.<br><br>Aguilar’s Taller Borda became a huge success in 1943, when they secured a<br>contract with an American jewelry company, Coro. They produced several notable<br>designs for Coro throughout the 1940s. Hector kept Taller Borda running until<br>1966 when he closed up shop and enjoyed a nearly 20-year retirement, his place<br>in the firmament of great Mexican silversmiths already secured.<br><br>What kind of art did Hector Aguilar make?<br>Hector Aguilar was a silversmith, jewelry designer, and artist whose work helped<br>popularize Mexican silver in the 1940s and 1950s. His workshop’s pieces for the<br>retailer, Coro were instrumental in this endeavor. That relationship lasted<br>nearly a decade and produced some of Aguilar’s most vital work. As with most of<br>the Mexican silversmiths from this time, these designs were heavily inspired by<br>pre-Columbian artifacts and the folk art of Mesoamerica. Aguilar’s work<br>continued to innovate over the next several decades, bolstered the quality of<br>his pieces, which often used much more pure silver than his competitors. These<br>days Aguilar’s jewelry is highly sought after for his mastery of the craft of<br>silversmithing as well as its extremely high silver rating.<br><br>How did silversmith Hector Aguilar get started?<br>Hector Aguilar was born in 1905 in Mexico City. Not much is known of his early<br>years, but a chance encounter with William Spratling in the early 1930s set him<br>on a silversmithing career that would span three decades. Aguilar brought<br>tourists from Mexico City to the small town of Taxco, a place that as fate would<br>have it also was where Spratling was starting his silver workshop. Jared Chavez Santo Domingo modernist sterling Link bracelet. 7" long x 1 1/6" wide x 75.1 grams. Does have a scratched signature JJC-00 on reverse side. Jared J. ChavezI began my journey as an artist learning to craft jewelry from my father, Richard I Chavez, a renowned lapidary artist. I was not given exact direction as to what to make but was only given the tools and instruction on how to use them. Along the way my work would be critiqued by my father and I would continually strive to evolve my designs and fabrication processes. He stressed the quality of the design and construction making sure that every aspect of a piece looked “finished” and no corners were cut. Along with all that I learned in my father’s studio, I would receive a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University in Studio Arts with a focus in Digital Art and Printmaking. After I graduated, I would attend The Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts’, Intensive Bench Jeweler Program in San Francisco. Each of these educational experiences added a particular technical or visual aspect to my work and would encourage me to continue to explore all the ways I could enhance my designs. My current work focuses on the reflective nature of polished silver. Though fabrication, metal stamping, and some casting, I explore how light and reflection interacts with the materials I utilize. I’ve found that polished silver takes in the colors and the light of the world around, and through the use of surface texture a dynamic play of light is created across the surface of my designs. I further enhance my work thought the use of semi-precious stones (agates, quartzs, jades, etc.). However one of the most important qualities in my selection of stones is often translucency. I’ve found that by allowing light to shine though a stone an overall rich and warm effect is created in the overall design. Along with my yearly schedule of shows where I sell my designs, I’ve also made it a point to educate the public about my work. Growing up in my father’s studio, I always saw just how much of himself he put into his designs and how sometimes he was met with disbelief as to how much work was put into his pieces. I found this to be a similar case when I entered the business, as the general public only sees the finished piece. For that reason, though in person demonstrations and self-produced video mini-documentaries, we’ve made it a point to show the skill, time, and passion that goes into every design. Ancient bronze bracelet. Very old bracelet with a very nice patina and nice hand<br>decorated design. Likely from a UT Professor's estate but I really can't<br>remember where I acquired it as I sometimes acquire more in a week than many<br>normal people do in a lifetime. My lovely wife helped my clean my old photo room<br>and it got mixed in with tons of other jewelry. It is 15/16" wide with a .75"<br>gap and it isn't flexible, so it seems like it would have had to have been put<br>on a child. I know many cultures wore bronze jewelry, African and Viking of<br>course being the first to come to mind, I'm just not really sure. and I don't<br>know whether it's 250 years old or 2500 years old, but would bet it's in that<br>range. Robert Johnson was born in Gallup, NM, raised in Pinedale NM and graduated from Gallup High School in 1986. Robert’s career as a silversmith started when he was 14 or 15 years old, as a buffer for his parent's handmade sterling silver beads. Through an acquaintance Robert met the late Kirk Smith during the summer of 1986.
