1930's Ronson Art Metal Works English Bulldog Table Lighter. 4.5" tall x 5.25" long. rare and unusual.Along with the Touch Tip, the Striker lighters are probably the most desirable Ronson Lighters for collectors. It is evident the craftsmanship that the Art Metal Works put into these well made lighters. To use striker lighters, one pulls out the wand, which is resting in lighter fluid, from the top of the dog’s head. Then sliding the wand down the flint on the dog’s snout will cause a spark and ignite the tip of the wand. Ronson offered a variety of animal striker lighters. Some of the other animals include an elephant, a very Art Deco pelican and a bear. The Ronson lighter company started as The Art Metal Works in 1897 and was incorporated on July 20, 1898, by Max Hecht, Louis Vincent Aronson and Leopold Herzig, in Newark, New Jersey.Louis V. Aronson was a huge creative driving force for the company; and, with a few business adjustments, including the addition of Alexander Harris (1910-11)[4][5] as Business Manager, the company soon became World Famous. All accounts state that Louis Aronson was a gifted man, who at 16 years old set up a money-making shop in his parents' home - before receiving a U.S. patent for a commercially valuable metal-plating process he developed when he was 24 years old, and he sold half the rights while retaining the Right to Use. "His experiments, which he has been conducting since his early youth, resulted in 1893 in the discovery of a process for electrically producing tinplate. Much money was expended upon improving the process... and has been of great practical value to the whole industry.[7] Retaining its rights, he sold half the patent rights, and later used part of the proceeds to open the Art Metal Works in Newark, N.J.[8] Soon the company was producing a variety of high-quality Lamps, Book ends, Art Statues and other decorative items, prized today for their detail in the collector marketplace.tw154

c1900 Fenal Freres Pexonne Marcelle Customized Plate. Interesting likely one of a kind item, I'm not sure if it was made by a factory worker or if they sold customized plates at one point. It's over 100 years old with no cracks, chips, restorations, or crazing. 8.75" wide. Hand painted with an underglaze stencil of the name. It is one of the oldest in Lorraine. (1720). Through many disappointments, earthenware will change hands 7 times in 100 years. From 1836, it was entirely owned by Nicolas Fenal, a farmer, who suddenly found himself the owner of this pottery. When he died in 1857, his children and nephews took over from him and created the Fenal Frères (FF) brand. One of the nephews, Théophile Fenal, created his own factory in Badonviller, after a turbulent period in Pexonne. The factory competes with that of his family in Pexonne. After the war of 1870, with the arrival of immigrants from Sarreguemines, the quality of the earthenware from Pexonne changed. Modernly designed ovens are set up and old colored paste earthenware gives way to white paste and transparent enamel. The creation of the Baccarat-Badonviller railway line which serves the Pexonne plant promotes development. In 1897, the Fenal Frères joint ownership - uncles and nephews - registered its marks. It is the Golden Age of the manufacture which will reach 389 workers in 1900. The production, not always identified, will be very varied (from crockery to earthenware stoves) and of good quality. tw193 The life of the workers of the earthenware factories of Pexonne at the beginning of the XX ° century was hard. They came - women, men and children - from Pexonne, Fenneviller but also from Neufmaisons and Badonviller. Everyone went to work in sneakers in summer and clogs in winter, in the dust and under the sun in the summer, in the snow in the winter. Daily work was since the law of 1848 "limited" to 12 hours. A law of 1892 had however reduced the work of women to 10 hours ...... The workers of Neufmaisons and Badonviller brought their midday meal in "camp pots" but for the majority of them, it was the wife or the eldest daughter who would carry the meal to Pexonne. Hard, hard, life in 1900, for the workers of the “Belle Epoque”… .. The First World War will seriously damage the Pexonne factory. Quickly rebuilt and modernized, the earthenware will again suffer attacks during the Second World War. August 27, 1944 is a dark day for the town: 80 deportees (of which only 17 will return from the camps). M. de Vitry is among the dead, as is his son Guy. M. de Villermont, mayor of the village will be shot. Life resumed in October 1945 at the earthenware factory, with the production of useful articles, soon to be improved. Exports are resuming, particularly to North Africa. But the ravages of war will leave fatal traces: the equipment is defective, production drops. The coup de grace will come in 1953 with the final shutdown of the generator which supplies the plant with motive power. The factory will close… ..

Vintage Alabaster Pietra Dura Natural Stone Mosaic Trinket box. 3.25" x 2.25" x 1.5" no damage. circa mid 20th century. tw190 Pietra dura (Italian: [ˈpjɛːtra ˈduːra]) or pietre dure [ˈpjɛːtre ˈduːre] (see below), called parchin kari or parchinkari (Persian: پرچین کاری) in the Indian Subcontinent, is a term for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly polished colored stones to create images. It is considered a decorative art. The stonework, after the work is assembled loosely, is glued stone-by-stone to a substrate after having previously been "sliced and cut in different shape sections; and then assembled together so precisely that the contact between each section was practically invisible". Stability was achieved by grooving the undersides of the stones so that they interlocked, rather like a jigsaw puzzle, with everything held tautly in place by an encircling 'frame'. Many different colored stones, particularly marbles, were used, along with semiprecious, and even precious stones. It first appeared in Rome in the 16th century, reaching its full maturity in Florence. Pietra dura items are generally crafted on green, white or black marble base stones. Typically, the resulting panel is completely flat, but some examples where the image is in low relief were made, taking the work more into the area of hardstone carving. TW187

c1860 Staffordshire Prattware Transferware Plates Sebastopol and 123 Cattle Scene. 2 great pieces from mid to late 19th century. They measure 8.25" and 8 7/8". Neither have any cracks, chips, or restorations. Large one has crazing on the back and none on the front, smaller one has no crazing. Selling both pieces shown. In the 19th century, the Pratt name was associated with the fine, usually multi-coloured, transfer printed engravings used to decorate the lids of earthenware pots used for food, pharmaceutical products and toiletries. The business also produced domestic earthenware including relief moulded earthenware (especially jugs) and tableware with underglaze, multi-coloured decoration (‘Prattware’). Terracotta and parian ware were other wares, and Godden (1988) notes that there are examples of mid-19th century porcelain printed with Pratt multi-colour underglaze prints, however, these may have been bought-in ware decorated by the company. Whilst Felix Pratt was the commercial driving force behind the business, the artist was a Jesse Austin who joined Pratt in the early-1840. He was an accomplished watercolour artist and engraver and over nearly 40 years, the business produced over 550 poly chrome prints used to decorate the now well known pot lids. Pratt’s first under-glaze, polychrome pot lid was made in 1847 and was a scene ‘Grace before Meals’. Austin’s subject included royalty, famous people, city scenes – there are eleven views of London – and this portrayal of the life and times of Victorian England is one of the reasons for the lid’s popularity today. Austin also made minature watercolour copies of famous paintings and these too appear on pot lids and Prattware. Although the pot lids have become well known, the engravings were also used on the containers themselves, on plates and on other domestic earthenware manufactured by the business and it is this good-quality domestic pottery that is termed ‘Prattware’. tw176

16.5" Polia Pillin(1909-1992) Mid century Modern California Art Pottery Bowl<br>late 1940's-50's. Exceptional early heavily potted Pillin piece just discovered<br>estate fresh. Bought from Polia for $75, I'm thinking the 101 on the tag<br>indicates it was likely her 101st piece made. This is a really big bowl with<br>typical crazing and 3 of the tiniest glaze flakes on the outside rim. No cracks,<br>chips, or restorations.<br><br>Polish-born Polia Pillin (1909-1992) and her husband William established their<br>ceramic studio, The Pillin Art Pottery Company, in their Los Angeles, CA garage<br>in 1948. Her husband shaped and glazed the pots that became canvases that Polia<br>used to paint fanciful scenes of people and animals in the mid-century style.<br>Thousands of pieces were produced and Polia became one of the most highly<br>regarded of contemporary studio potters today.<br><br>The clay used for Pillin pottery was typically red-brick in color. William<br>experimented with different glazes and produced some pieces without Polia’s<br>artwork. However, it was Polia’s artistic designs that garnered her<br>international recognition. Polia was inspired by the Cubism movement and by the<br>works of Pablo Picasso whom she greatly admired. Her style is often referred to<br>as “Byzantine”. Polia’s favorite subjects were women, horses, birds, fish and<br>other animals painted over colorfully rich glazes. The overall pallet had an<br>organic, jewel-toned quality.<br><br>Each piece of Pillin pottery was hand-thrown, glazed, painted and hence, unique.<br>Because Pillin worked from her garage (and in her kitchen when she lived in<br>Chicago), she did not have access to expert tradesmen, chemists or specialized<br>equipment that could mass produce her work. For that reason, most Pillin pottery<br>is highly crazed. Rare pieces with little to no crazing command higher values.<br><br>Most pieces of Pillin pottery were produced beginning in 1948 and marked on the<br>bottom with Polia’s signature “Pillin” in either thick or thin black ink. Rare<br>pieces produced in her Chicago kitchen in 1946 and 1947 are incised “46” or<br>“47”. Some very early pieces are marked “W+P” above the Pillin signature to<br>indicate William throwing the pieces and Polia decorating them. Thicker thrown<br>pieces tend to indicate earlier works.

1987 Chris Hammack Original Wood Carving "Worlds Greatest Lobbyist" Fort Worth<br>Texas. 10.5" tall x 4 3/8" wide at base. Extremely rare find by a noted artist<br>that started the same year this was created reproducing his sculptures in resin<br>which have sold all over the world. This is one piece of solid carved wood other<br>than the round base. The carving is incredible and it's obvious why he's been so<br>successful. This was under a glass dome all it's life and is in mint condition.<br>It will be extremely well packed to get there in the same condition. I won't be<br>including the dome as it would complicate shipping. Below is a bio from his<br>website.<br><br>After all these years, one thing remains,<br><br>Chris Hammack loves to whittle and make people laugh.<br><br>Chris’s carving career began over 36 years ago after a thirty foot fall landed<br>him in the hospital. During a five month convalescence he picked up a piece of<br>firewood and a pocket knife and began carving caricatures, of which he had<br>sketched as a young boy growing up in Texas.<br><br>Within a couple of years, Chris was competing in carving competitions and<br>bringing home some blue ribbons.<br><br>The years following would begin to bring national acclaim to his work as a<br>woodcarver. In 1987, Hammack started a very successful wholesale business<br>reproducing his original carvings in resin. This company, Spit N’ Whittle, led<br>to his work selling around the globe. During these years he also designed<br>several successful gift lines for other major gift companies in the US.<br><br>Hammack has shared his carving talent through teaching numerous live seminars<br>nationwide, and now also teaches classes one on one over the internet.<br><br>Chris happily says,<br><br>“For me, woodcarving has never lost its magic. Give me a good piece of basswood<br>and a sharp knife and I’m content”<br><br>Today, Chris lives on a small island in Mexico where he still creates his<br>original works of art, and teaches.<br>tw162

1940's Texas Folk Art Black American Cowboy Carved wood Figure with Leather<br>chaps, belt. Rare, Unusual, one of a kind. A definite museum piece. Guaranteed<br>first half of the 20th century most likely 1920's through 40's. 22" tall x 9.5"<br>wide. I didn't find any identifying features, but I'm not familiar with Texas<br>folk artists as I spent most of my career on the east coast.<br><br>Black cowboys in the American West accounted for up to 25 percent of workers in<br>the range-cattle industry from the 1860s to 1880s, estimated to be at least 5000<br>workers according the latest research.[1] Typically former slaves or born into<br>the families of former slaves, many black men had skills in cattle handling and<br>headed West at the end of the Civil War.[2] Though the industry generally<br>treated black men equally to white men in terms of pay and responsibilities,<br>discrimination persisted, though to a lesser extent than in other industries of<br>the time.<br><br>Background<br>Nat Love<br>Nat Love (1854 – 1921), an African-American cowboy and former slave.<br>After the Reconstruction of the South after the American Civil War, freed slaves<br>were still denied land ownership and other rights in many states, and about<br>20,000 Exodusters headed west to Kansas between 1879 and 1884, with smaller<br>migrations to other Western states. Many trained under Mexican vaqueros,<br>cattle-raising Native Americans, or their former masters; they then worked as<br>ranch hands for wages equal to their white counterparts and offering more<br>opportunities than existed for freemen in the South.[2]<br><br>Black men, typically former slaves, children of slaves, or working in<br>plantations, and farms would have been exposed to kitchen work and stables as<br>well. As early as 1770, regulations in Louisiana required two slaves to manage<br>100 head of cattle.[1] White ranchers could even win competitions based on the<br>cow-handling skills of the Black slaves in their possession.[3] Initially, white<br>ranchers referred to white workers as "cow hands," with Black people in the same<br>position referred to with the pejorative "cow boy." Over time the term cowboy<br>came to apply to anyone in the industry of herding cattle.[3][4] Prior to the<br>abolition of slavery, the cattle trade was considered to offer a high degree of<br>relative freedom to slaves, who would be issued s, often left unaccompanied on<br>horseback for long stretches, and trusted to return.[4]<br><br>Free Black cattle drivers drove cattle from Kansas to areas including Atlanta,<br>the Dakotas, and Canada, as well as New Mexico, Arizona, California and<br>Oregon.[5]Porter, Kenneth Wiggins (1969). "Negro Labor in the Western Cattle<br>Industry, 1866-1900". Labor History. 10 (Summer): 346–74.<br>doi:10.1080/00236566908584084. Some freed slaves remained with their former<br>masters as employees.[4] As these areas became more settled and established more<br>practical transportation networks, the era of migrant cattle ranching came to an<br>end.[6]<br><br>Work<br>Black cowhands were typically assigned to handle horses with poor temperaments<br>and wild behaviors, a career known as horsebreaking.[5] Other people in the<br>cattle trade were trail cooks, which could earn extra money over other cowhands,<br>regardless of race.[5] Trail menus from black chefs included biscuits, sowbelly,<br>beef, molasses, and coffee. Black chefs would also hunt deer and wild turkey<br>between washing and kitchen cleaning duties.[5] Black cowhands were also<br>expected to perform on the trail, and expected to sing or to pack a musical<br>instrument.[5] Others would often serve as bodyguards or money transporters,<br>which has been attributed to the unlikelihood of thieves searching a black man<br>for large sums of money.[5]<br><br>Bose Ikard served as Charles Goodnight's banker for many years. Bill Pickett was<br>credited with inventing bulldogging.<br><br>There were also black women cowboys, though their numbers are unknown, as income<br>was provided to a common household rather than to individual women. Women were<br>unlikely to inherit a homestead or continue to work in ranching, as freemen and<br>white ranchers were unlikely to work for a black woman.[7]<br><br>Rodeos<br>Popularized across the United States in 1873 by Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild West<br>shows showcased skills and characters of the Western United States in the form<br>of a traveling performance including rodeo roping, Native American dances, and<br>other acts.[3] Among these traveling shows, African-American cowboy Jesse Stahl<br>was famous for his saddle riding, a defining aspect of rodeos.[3] Racism was<br>common in rodeo competitions, and terms such as "harder to cover" could be used<br>to mask racism in rodeo competitions under the guise that white riders had more<br>difficult horses.[3] Black rodeo riders would be compared to animals, given<br>nicknames reflecting African animals and using animal metaphors not found in<br>descriptions of white rodeo performers.[3] In response to their treatment and<br>Jim Crow laws, Black cowboys formed "soul circuits," later organized as the<br>Southwestern Colored Cowboys' Association, with the largest number of<br>African-American cowboys participated in rural communities along the coast of<br>Texas up to the 1940s.<br>TW158

Cantagalli Antique Itanian Faience Reticulated Plate with Crest. 9.5" wide with no cracks, chips, or restorations. 19th century. About Ulisse Cantagalli Ulisse Cantagalli was a superb artist and an even better businessman. Not much of him is known before 1878 when he took over the family factory in Florence and started to produce highly decorative Italian ceramics in the Renaissance style. At the time the taste for this kind of pottery was a very hot trend in the English speaking countries. He devoted his artistic energy to the understanding of the techniques and the designs of the old masters from Gubbio, Deruta, Urbino and other important ceramic centers. His ability to master the ruby and golden luster techniques of Mastro Giorgio Andreoli brought the factory to fame, particularly in Britain. The passion for Italian pottery and its role in the success of Cantagalli’s factory is well described in a delicious article published in the New York Times in 1879, titled “The Making of Majolica: A Florence Pottery Factory”. The event that more than any other contributed to the International success of Cantagalli was his friendship with William de Morgan, Britain’s most talented and most admired pottery and tile designer of his days. He introduced him to influential collectors in England and US and encouraged him to participate to International exhibitions. In a short time, Cantagalli works were highly regarded in English speaking countries, where they still are popular Collector’s items. Cantagalli died in 1901. His wife and daughter continued to operate the factory in Florence. In 1934 they sold it together with the Cantagalli’s trademark to Amerigo Menegatti, former artistic director of the factory. The economic turmoil following World War II forced Menegatti to a step change in production. He began to offer more utilitarian items, which still bore the famous cockerel that English speaking collectors find so appealing. The Cantagalli factory closed in 1985. The production of Cantagalli ware is now over, although the Menegatti family still owns the trademark. TW156

c1890 William B Kerr American Sterling Call card Case/Wallet. Rare and unusual in fantastic condition with minor scratches below center hand etched design which could either be an organization or initials I'm not sure but it's fancy and wonderful. Weighs 128.3 grams, it's thick and heavy. Faint Hatchet hallmark shown, I believe it's William B Kerr as they used similar designs. 4 7/8" tall x 3 3/8" wide. I've not seen this exact design before but my guess is the leather wore out on most of them, this one is particularly well preserved and could be used for credit cards and money. WM.B. KERR & CO - Newark, NJ Began as Kerr & Thiery in 1855. Kerr's hallmark was a fasces - a single-bit axe with rods bound with straps. They used this trademark of Ancient Rome origin from 1855 until 1892. Other hallmarks include a hammer, and three "X" marks. Purchased by Gorham Corporation in 1906 tw156

Longwy Sanka Zebras African Style French Art Pottery 1990's absolutely no wear or damage. Guaranteed authentic with un-mistakeable quality. These pieces are from the last quarter of the 20th century, new Longwy is Very expensive. The tray is 5.25", large jar is 4.5" tall x 5.5" wide other jar is 2.5" tall x 3.75" wide. The Boch family, known for their great influence on the ceramic industry, founded the “Faiencerie de Longwy” in 1798 in a former convent. The production received great recognition during the First Empire: after Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte had attended the workshops, he ordered the complete tableware for the Imperial Legion of Honor. In 1835, the Faiencerie passed into the possession of the d’Huart family and became a thriving business. In the period around 1870, the heyday of the Second Empire, Orientalism came into fashion. This trend of oriental art and culture will have a big impact on the Faiencerie: the family d’Huart hires on the Italian Amédée de Carenza, director of the ceramic works Mikado. Inspired by the enamel metal works discovered in Japan, de Carenza develops an alternative in ceramics: and the first Emaux de Longwy were born.During this time, the Faiencerie retains the manufacture of tableware, and designed a number of specific designs such as flowers and bird motifs that often occur in the period between 1870 and 1918. In the 1920s, Art Deco then enters this bastion of Orientalism. The association with “Primavera” marks a fruitful period which culminated in the Decorative Arts Exhibition of 1925 in Paris. This complete renewal of forms and decorations created Longwy’s reputation in the United States and Europe during the period before the war.Longwy is the exclusive distributor of semi-industrially manufactured pottery enamel to this day. The historic stamp guarantees the authenticity of the pieces. The last decades were marked by the collaboration of contemporary artists and designers. This brought forth an amazing collection combining tradition, luxury and the beaux arts. The limited editions are sought after and coveted collectors’ items.tw149

Denys Pierre Puech, French, (1854-1942), marked in the cast Barbedienne Fondeur, circa 1880's-1890's a very uncommon bronze by an important French Sculptor in very good condition. 16.25"h, 8.5" wide x 26.75lbs From a family of farmers (his brother was Louis Puech, Député for the Seine Department from 1898 to 1932, and Minister of Public Works from 3 November 1910 to 27 February 1911), he began as an apprentice in the marble workshop of François Mahoux in Rodez. In 1872, after two years training, he pursued an apprenticeship in Paris in the workshop of François Jouffroy then of Alexandre Falguière and Henri Chapu, at the same time following an evening course at the Beaux-Arts. 1881 and 1883 saw his first successes, when he twice won the second prize in the prix de Rome contest, for his Tyrtaeus singing the Messanians (Tyrtée chantant les Messéniennes) and Diagoras dying for joy on learning of his two victorious children's triumph at the Olympic Games (Diagoras mourant de joie en apprenant le triomphe de ses deux enfants vainqueurs aux Jeux Olympiques) respectively. He at last won first prize in 1884, with Wounded Mezentius (Mézence blessé). From then on he received several official commissions from the French Third Republic, sculpting (among others) busts of Jules Ferry (1895), Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve (1898), Émile Loubet (1901) and Benito Mussolini (1925). In all, 573 works are inventoried. He founded a museum of fine art in Rodez in 1903 (now the Musée Denys-Puech). The building, inaugurated in 1910, was designed by him in conjunction with the architect Boyer to best show off his sculptures. He was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905, and made a knight of the Légion d'honneur on 17 January 1908. On 13 May 1908, he married princess Anina Gagarine Stourdza (1 June 1865 – 14 April 1918), a painter herself, of whom he sculpted a statue holding a painter's palette in 1914. He was Director of the French Academy in Rome from 1921 to 1933. Among those who studied with him were the American sculptors Clara Hill,[2] Ernest Keyser[3] and Helen Farnsworth Mears.
