Native American jewelry artisan Kirk Smith, or Kiyaa Alani Shush Dine (his Dine tribe name, meaning “towering house bear people clan”), created a long-lasting legacy in a tragically short life. His work is highly regarded for its quality craftsmanship and his use of stones of only the highest quality and richest coloring. Kirk’s pieces, primarily his concho belts for which he was best known, have long been coveted and collectible, with their value only increasing as a result of his unexpected, early death. His story is an interesting one. HIS LIFE: Kirk Smith first began working with silver at around age 7 in his grandfather’s hidden workshop, that according to Smith’s interview with Perry Null Trading, “you would not see it unless you knew it was there”. His grandfather also made jewelry and Kirk used to aid him by first learning to run the bellow to heat the charcoal that would allow his grandfather to work with the silver at high temperatures, and then eventually began to work with beads and bracelets and necklaces himself. He later used these primitive skills to craft jewelry for his uncle, who would exchange clothes and shoes for his pieces. In 1972, Kirk struck out on his own, primarily working in silver cast work, until the price of silver went up in 1974 and he went to work doing different things like working in the mine or a refinery in Galveston. He returned to jewelry making in the early 1980s when his mother got sick and he desired to be nearer to her. That’s when his craft took a turn. HIS MENTORS: Of course, his grandfather was his earliest influence, and perhaps the most profound on Kirk as a person, but when it comes to his craftsmanship, the game-changer for him was his brother-in-law. Kirk’s sister was married to an artisan named Harry Morgan, a well-known name in the world of Native American jewelry. Harry was known for his intricate stamp work and the way he would style his silver to give it an antique look, believing that overly polished silver hid the detailing and the beauty of a piece. It was Harry who really taught Kirk about design and style in terms of his craft.     HIS CRAFT: Kirk is probably best known for his concho belts, like the one we found in Audrey’s closet, that we thought was too beautiful not to share with y’all after being tucked away for too long. He was known for his unrelenting insistence on working his silver by hand, resulting in beautiful pieces of heavy silver and high-grade stones. In addition to concho belts, Kirk crafted gorgeous statement cuff bracelets with turquoise and red coral and some of the most striking blue lapis you’ve ever seen, as well as some rings, pendants, earrings, and even a few squash blossoms. As we mentioned, his work is highly collectible, not only because of its stunning beauty, but because sadly, there won’t be any more made; Kirk was tragically killed in 2012.   HIS DEATH: On September 17, 2012, Kirk was in an altercation in a parking lot with a young man whose truck had struck Kirk’s vehicle as the man was attempting to back into a parking spot. When the driver, who was intoxicated, tried to flee the scene, Kirk jumped onto the hood of the man’s truck. When he was eventually unable to maintain his grip, Kirk was flung from the moving vehicle and suffered injuries which resulted in his death in an Albuquerque hospital a little while later. The driver did succeed in fleeing the scene, but eventually collided with another truck and a barrier on Interstate 25 and was apprehended after a violent struggle with police; he was found to have had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16, twice the legal limit. Incredibly, the driver, who was 16 at the time, was only sentenced to 90 days in a treatment center and two years probation. As you might imagine, Kirk’s surviving family does not feel that justice was done in the wake of his death, but they are carrying on his legacy in a positive way despite the circumstances.   Marked or unmarked as shown in pics, weight and other measurements in pics. Danny Romero Yaqui (1954-2018) 14k Gold Diamond, Tanzanite, Opal, sugilite, coral, boulder opal, and lapis necklace. Measurements in pics, accompanied with 2013 receipt. Still in like new condition with no damage or detectable wear. Please keep in mind that in 2013 gold averaged 1/2 the price it currently is so did the other top grade materials used to make this, not to mention a deceased artists talent and time. Also It seems this dealer sells secondary market items, so I believe this 7k was a used price in 2013 as it's really not a lot of money for this necklace now and wasn't then.  18.5" long Danny Romero 1954-2018 Danny Romero is of both Yaqui and Spanish heritage. He creates jewelry and paintings from his home in New Mexico. Growing up in Douglas, Arizona, he has been working with stone and silver for over 20 years. "I like E.S. Curtis photographs," he says, referring to the famous turn-of-the-century photographer and ethnographer who documented more than 80 Native American tribes. "I go through magazines. I've done drawings and I paint". He was one of five silversmiths invited to the Night of the First Americans at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., and he has had showings of his jewelry in galleries and museums in many parts of the country as well as in Germany, Japan, and Canada. Danny Romero is no longer producing jewelry. The jewelry we have was made by Danny Romero circa 2005. Danny received wide acclaim in the 1970's-80's for both his traditional turquoise jewelry as well as his inlay jewelry. Danny Romero was the first silversmith to literally put painted art into jewelry.

Born in 1947, he originally earned a degree in biology continuing on to work for the Fish and Wildlife and Forest Services. Andy had learned the basics of jewelry making at the University of New Mexico and with the urging of Navajo artist, Gibson Nez, he made the decision to become a full time jeweler. Andy Lee Kirk was a consummate artist with many fine skills. He did lapidary work, rolling his own beads, and had mastered many types of precious metalwork including lost wax and sand cast techniques, stamping, engraving, overlay and fabrication. His artistic innovation reached further than aesthetic beauty alone. His designs were brilliant – a perfect balance between clean modern lines, meaningful symbolism, and bright southwestern colors such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, and red coral. Born on the Acoma Reservation, Wolf Robe was the son of Chief Day Break (Edward Proctor Hunt), Chief of the Delight Makers -- a man instrumental in the improvement of relations between the Acomas and whites. His mother, Morning Star, whose own father was Governor of Acoma seven times, was a potter and weaver. Wolf Robe learned silver-smithing from his older brother on the reservation. Wolf Robe achieved recovnition and fame for his jewelry and art work, winning the prestigious Philbrook Art Center's Grand Award in 1967. In addition, he was a businessman, with his own arts and crafts store in Tulsa, a lecturer, international traveller, author, and translator for the Bureau of American Ethnology. He assited L. A. White in his extensive studies of the Acoma Indians and made recordings for the National Anthropological Archives. Wolf Robe was particularly interested in the preservation of tribal customs, language and culture, and devoted his own time to this and the encouragement of others in similar efforts. Designed by Matilde Poulat (AKA "Matl" (Aztec for "Water") who is & always will be one of my personal favorites that made her fame during the "Mexican Silver Renaissance Days" & later..She was a painter & designer 1st & was born in the Yucatan & later on went to study at the San Carlos Academy in Mexico City at the same time the famous muralist & husband to Frida Kahlo,Diego Rivera was studying there..One of her 1st teachers was a "P.OCHOA",a man whose works you rarely come across & you will find Matl's earliest works,emulating Ochoa's,which was nothing like the style she ended up owning.She opened shop in 1934 & ended up having her own 'signature look",which to this day people still pay homage to her designs.She produced some of the most ornate jewelry that was being produced in Mexico back in the day..The inspirations she fell back on were inspired from the Mixtec people of Monte Alban, Oaxaca area. Each designer during the Mexican Silver Renaissance days had their own unique style,but it was Matilde,who brought the beautiful motifs of doves, flowers, and tiny bells that are reminiscent of the whimsical subjects of contemporary Mexican folk art...The beauty of her metal work,was so time consuming & was considered Baroque in style with a undeniably "Mexican"look..She was known for laying round turquoise or coral cabochons all in one bezel that was then crimped' to hold the stones in,rather than setting them individually & you will see the perfect example of this style in this pin,which gives her piece's a whole different look,because of this. Ernest Thomas BilagodyNavajo silversmith Ernest Thomas Bilagody (ETB) was born in Tuba City, Arizona to the Red House Big Water Clan and has been immersed in his trade for the better part of his life. His grandparents are from the Around the House Clan and the Bitter Water Clan. This craftsman was guided by his mother early on and continued those traditions into his adult years. He worked as a silversmith for over 35 years, since the mid 1970’s, until his passing in 2014. His mother started him out with buffing the earrings she made. From there she gave him other duties, such as soldering things for her. With this beginning, Ernest started making his own jewelry, and he did not ever look back. He continued those traditions into his adult years. Ernest worked out of his own home, and worked for various traders. These talented silversmiths have been creating traditional Navajo jewelry since 1969. They came from families well known for their jewelry making. Wilson’s father, Luke, taught John Adair, author of “Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths” how to make sand cast jewelry. He worked for many years with Mike and Dean Kirk, at the famous Kirk Brothers Trading Company in Gallup, New Mexico.Carol’s parents, Angela and Allen Chee were both silversmiths who worked by C.G. Wallace, the famous jewelry trader from Zuni, New Mexico.The Begays began their career making sandcast jewelry, a traditional type of Navajo jewelry that requires the artist to make carvings in Tufa stone to make forms to shape molten silver. They first worked for Tobe Tupen, a well known trader in Gallup. Carol remembers that silver was only $1.25 an ounce when they started.Today they are independent artists whose work is widely sought after and admired. Wilson concentrates on the casting and building the foundations of the jewelry and Carol sets the stones and does the finishing work. They work together to design their jewelry.Traditional sandcast silver jewelry is a unique Navajo art form. The process, although it sounds simple, requires careful discipline and years of practice to obtain quality results.The artist takes two pieces of pumice stone and grinds them together to create two flat surfaces. Then the design is carved into one of the two pumice stones. An opening is carved from the design to the top and bottom of the stone. The two pieces of stone are then tied together so that the carved design is between the two flat areas. Silver is then melted in a crucible, and when it reaches the proper molten form, it is poured into the opening on the top of the design. If it is the proper temperature, it flows through to the bottom where it cools and hardens, filling the design space. After cooling, the stones are separated, the casting removed and the protrusions on the top and bottom are cut off. The silver is then filed smooth and shaped.If stones are to be set on the piece, the artist builds a silver bezel to hold the stone and then solders it to the piece of jewelry. Sawdust is put in the bottom of the bezel to cushion the stone and the bezel is tightened. The piece is then polished to the shine the artist likes.Wilson Begay of Gallup is the acknowledged master of the art of sandcast jewelry. Luke Begay, Wilson's grandfather, demonstrated this skill to John Adair in the early 1930's when Adair was conducting a survey of native silversmiths of the Smithsonian. Luke taught the skill to Wilson as a young man. Today, in his 60's, Wilson continues to make sandcast jewelry in his Gallup home. His wife, Carol, chooses the stones to be used and sets them in bezels. The Begays have three daughters, Nichole, Yvonne and Bonnie, are continuing the family tradition.Wilson's stamped signature is a flat brimmed Navajo hat with his initials under it. His signature is one of the most recognized in Indian jewelry. No cracks, chips, restorations or crazing. 3 7/8" long x 2.5" tall. tw122Van Briggle Art Pottery was at the time of its demise the oldest continuously operating art pottery in the United States, having been established in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1901 by Artus and Anne Van Briggle. Artus had a significant impact on the Art Nouveau movement in the United States, and his pottery is foundational to American Art Pottery. The Art Nouveau style favored by its founders continues to influence the pottery's designs. Artus Van Briggle settled in Colorado Springs in 1899 after establishing himself as a notable artist with the Rookwood Pottery of Ohio. With Anne Louise (née Gregory), his new wife, Artus began exploring the Art Nouveau style in their pottery creations, drawing awards and accolades from the American and European art communities. Although he was a talented painter who had displayed and won awards in Europe, from 1899 until his death Artus devoted himself almost exclusively to the craft and art of pottery. Van Briggle's Art Nouveau designs and distinctive matte glazes were awarded high honors from prestigious sources, including the Paris Salon, the Saint Louis Exposition, the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, and the American Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Boston.The Van Briggle Pottery Studio closed in spring 2012Artus Van Briggle in 1900. Born to artistic parents on March 21, 1869, Artus Van Briggle had an early introduction to painting using materials found about the home. The Van Briggle family lived in Ohio, one of America's hotbeds of ceramic design. At the age of 17 he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he decorated china dolls at the Arnold Fairyland Doll Store, while attending his early art studies at the Cincinnati Art School. Artus resumed his work at Rookwood and also started sculpting and experimented with recreating the lost Ming Dynasty glazes.Perfecting the distinctive dull or matte glaze In 1899, struggling with health issues due to tuberculosis, Artus left Rookwood and moved to the drier air of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Upon befriending the Holmes family of Chico Basin, he stayed at the HOP Ranch during the summers of 1899, 1900, and 1901 to reduce work stress and regain strength while pursuing his own styles of pottery, centered around the Art Nouveau movement. He continued his research on the ancient matte glazes that fascinated him in Paris. After two years of trials and experiments a matte glaze was perfected. One of the matte glazes perfected by Artus was the matte blue glaze, based on an ancient Chinese process that had long been lost to history.Artus opened Van Briggle Pottery in 1901 and was joined by Anne Gregory, who took a position as a high school art teacher in Colorado Springs. In 1903, Artus Van Briggle was appointed First Director of the Department of Art and Design in Colorado College, succeeding Louis Soutter, a Swiss artist (born in Geneva, Switzerland) he met in Paris in 1895.In 1902, Anne and Artus were married, and she devoted herself to their pottery; she created designs and collaborated in all aspects of the enterprise with her husband. Late 1902 brought Van Briggle awards for his glazes and designs in Art Nouveau from the prestigious Paris Salon; he was now an accepted artist. During their early years, Artus and Ann established hundreds of Art Nouveau styles of pottery under the Van Briggle name. The Despondency vase won Van Briggle wide acclaim and first place at the Paris Salon in 1903. Van Briggle Memorial Pottery Pottery loses its founder Artus Van Briggle died in July 1904, at the age of 35. Anne continued the pottery using the forms created by Artus as a foundation and adding more designs of her own. In 1907, Anne and pottery stockholder and city-founder William Jackson Palmer began construction on a new pottery on Uintah Street. The Van Briggle Memorial Pottery — designed by Dutch architect Nicholas Van den Arend — was opened in 1908 and stands today as an historic landmark noted for its architecture and use of ceramics in the facade.Having remarried in 1908, Anne Louise Gregory Ritter leased the pottery in 1912 to Edmund deForest Curtis, who ran it until 1916. She sold the company in 1922 to J.F. and I.H. Lewis and moved to Denver the following year, where she would concentrate on painting and where she remained until her death in 1929. In her absence, the pottery fell under financial hardships and was sold at sheriff's auction; later it was re-sold, once more becoming the property of Mr. Curtis.Surviving disaster and war The pottery was sold twice more in the ensuing decade and survived a fire in 1919 that gutted the interior but left the brick shell and kilns. New owners I.F. and J.H. Lewis took the opportunity to modernize and expand the facility beginning in 1920 and stabilized the production and financial aspects of the pottery for the first time. Despite damage from the flood of 1935—the most destructive flood in Colorado Springs history — that destroyed much of the company's records and molds, the pottery continued to enjoy success up to World War II, when they closed for approximately three years as the United States focused its resources on the war effort.With the increase of interstate travel in the United States a freeway was planned in 1953 for Colorado Springs which J.H. Lewis estimated would run through the Memorial Plant site. Although the freeway eventually was planned to avoid destroying the historic pottery, Mr. Lewis nonetheless put into action plans to relocate the pottery to a higher-traffic area of Colorado Springs. In 1955, Mr. Lewis and Clem Hull brought a new facility on line at a renovated railroad roundhouse on Midland Road. The new facility, known as the Midland Plant, had a smaller capacity but enjoyed quick success due to its location on the main highway to the Garden of the Gods and other tourist locations.In 1968, Mr. Lewis sold the Memorial Plant to Colorado College, and it fell into disrepair for the ensuing 40 years, being used variously as offices and storage.
