sz8.5 Jared Chavez Santo Domingo sterling band ring.Simplicity and attention to detail have always been central concepts behind all the art I create. From the beginning of my training as a metalsmith, I was taught the essentials of jewelry fabrication, but I was never told what to make or how it should look. Luckily having my father as a teacher, renowned lapidary artist, Richard Chavez, the idea of “less is more” was already there. It was an idea so fundamental in my artistic development that excess is still something I shy away from today. All of my metalwork takes into consideration a balance of texture and light. I have found over the years these elements can overwhelm one another, disrupting the aesthetic beauty of a piece. As I evolve as a metalsmith I’ve learned materials such as sterling silver, 14k gold, and semi-precious stones have married well with the abstract approach of my designs. While most of my work consists of non-representational styling, personal life experiences have added a great deal to my creations. It is because of this, the narrative plays such an important role in some of my larger vessels. One opal with natural host rock going through center, the other two secure in bezels with fractures. 18.5 grams.Wayne Wolf Robe Hunt, a full-blood Acoma Indian (1905-1977). Born on the Acoma Reservation, Wolf Robe was the son of Chief Day Break (Edward Proctor Hunt), Chief of the Delight Makers -- a man instrumental in the improvement of relations between the Acomas and whites. His mother, Morning Star, whose own father was Governor of Acoma seven times, was a potter and weaver. Wolf Robe learned silver-smithing from his older brother on the reservation. Wolf Robe achieved recovnition and fame for his jewelry and art work, winning the prestigious Philbrook Art Center's Grand Award in 1967. In addition, he was a businessman, with his own arts and crafts store in Tulsa, a lecturer, international traveller, author, and translator for the Bureau of American Ethnology. He assited L. A. White in his extensive studies of the Acoma Indians and made recordings for the National Anthropological Archives. Wolf Robe was particularly interested in the preservation of tribal customs, language and culture, and devoted his own time to this and the encouragement of others in similar efforts. Ridges around the rim indicate it was made from a squished coin. <br><br>Tommy Singer (1940 - May 31, 2014) was a World Famous Navajo Silversmith and his distinct style of Indian Jewelry is recognized the world over. Tommy was a silversmith for over 50 years. He learned the art of silversmithing from his father when he was just 7 years old. His Father Tsinnigine Hathali was a Navajo Medicine man. His early works were done in the Silver overlay technique but soon began to feature Turquoise stones. While working with scrap turquoise chips, Tommy pioneered the technique of Chip inlay used by thousands of artists to this day.
