6.5" Steve Arviso Navajo high grade Nevada Turquoise sterling cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics, clean with no issues. Solid sterling, marked as shown. Navajo silversmith Steve Arviso creates jewelry inspired by old Navajo styles with an emphasis on the natural beauty of the stone. He does not believe in forcing his turquoise to become anything other than what it chooses to be. “When I get a piece of turquoise, he explains, “I dont instantly know what Im going to make out of 20, 30 stones, only one turquoise will speak to me. Rather than an artist, Arviso considers himself more of a creator, blowing life into the jewelry. Arviso will put the chosen stone in his pocket and go about his daily chores and routines, such as tending to his Paint horses, which he proudly breeds and raises. He will spend time with his turquoise, allowing him to think about his own life. Whatever feelings and thoughts he experiences while the stone is on his person will be transmitted into the final piece of jewelry he creates. This is Steves own rite of creativity to understand his stone and to help it express what it wants to become. To best exhibit the turquoise, Arviso has become a master at refined, understated silverwork. Steve is quickly becoming famous for his particular take on old style Navajo jewelry. His ritual-like creation process, the high quality turquoise he uses, the specifically pre-1950s style that he embraces, and his own unique touch are what make Arviso‘s works so highly sought after. We are very proud to be carrying his work in our store. In January, 2021, Steve lost his son Cody Arviso. Cody was a talented jeweler himself and his hallmark was the bear claw. In rememberence of Cody, Steve is now adding the bear claw hallmark to all of his work.

6.5" Michael Schmaltz, Algonquin #8 turquoise cluster ingot silver cuff bracelet. Unworn, "new old stock" condition. Weight and measurements in pics. Amazing piece with untra high grade natural American turquoise from the #8 mine. The best of both worlds life as a silversmith and painter Michael Schmaltz loves painting women, all kinds of women, as they go about their daily activities. He photographs them in not your typical pose and what he gets is an image for a painting. However, his current work is a painting of his daughter when she was 10, sitting on the floor reading the “funny papers. A once passionate jewelry maker in his prime years, he is now embarking on living his lifelong dream of an artist, something that his parents heavily discouraged him in pursuing when he was a teen. He says that he always knew in his heart since he was five years old that he had artistic abilities. “I just had a knack for it, he said. “I was recognized at a real young age at being artistic. But, I was discouraged from pursing art by my parents, whod thought it would be a waste of time. Schmaltz talks about enlisting in the Army, putting his artistic dream on the back burner, and how he remembers while he was aboard a ship, he was so bored he did some oil paintings. But, that was short lived because once he was out of the Army, he made jewelry making his passion for 40 years, however, he says that he always wanted to paint. “I didnt have time to paint because all of my energy went into producing jewelry, he said. “It takes a lot of concentration and energy to paint. I couldnt do both until I got to the point where I dont need to make jewelry for a living anymore. Now, I paint and hardly make any jewelry. Born in Winslow, Ariz., Schmaltz has been residing in Gallup since he was four. He is a self-taught jewelry maker and artist. He remembers during the early 1970s, when jewelry making was popular but he could not find anyone who had the time to teach him how to make jewelry. So, he bought a propane torch, some silver and taught himself the craft.

6.25" Marc Antia Apache 14k/Sterling Azurite cuff bracelet, clean with no damage or significant wear. Weight and mearements in pics. Part Apache and part German, artist Marc Antia is a self-taught silversmith that has being making jewelry for decades. When he isnt masterfully working on new pieces, he travels across the United States to display his work at Native American jewelry and craft shows. Marc has created a following for his elaborate stamped jewelry. He often combines sterling silver and 14k gold to make pendants, rings, and cuffs. Despite the formality presented by his use of gold in Marcs jewelry, the durability of his pieces is apparent; upon wearing, one immediately knows this is something that can take the abuse of a daily wear. And yet, they are surprisingly lightweight. One well-versed in Native American jewelry might notice that the traditional Navajo stamp style seen in Marcs jewelry is liken to a fellow Native American artists work: Emerson Bill. This is no coincidence, as both artists learned the ways of their trade together. This occurred in their salad days, and they grew to be close friends. Marcs work can be distinguished from Emersons by his addition of extra embellishments and flourishes in his stamp work. His classic stamping on his gold and silver jewelry make Marcs work wearable with just about any outfit or color scheme, let alone that it works incredibly well with other Native American handmade jewelry pieces. While still formal and ornate, Marcs work also reflects humility in both its function and its roots in traditional technique.

Solid silver bracelet by well respected Navajo silvermith. Paul Livingston was born in 1954 and has spent his entire life on the Navajo Church Rock Reservation, where he grew up watching with fascination as his silversmith Uncle crafted raw metal and stone into beautiful jewelry. Through trial and error and a great deal of help from his Uncle, Paul became an accomplished young jewelry maker. By the time he was twenty-two he was ready to launch himself full time into silversmithing. Paul Livingstonis an acclaimed Navajo silversmith who favors substance in his metal work and high-quality, natural stones in all his settings. Today, nearly forty years later, Paul is a nationally known and collected jewelry artist. He is particularly known for a style of jewelry most silversmiths shy away from a technique known as ‘cluster and row work where multiple tiny stones are used together to form a delicate, colorful designs in jewelry. Paul is happy to work with the little stones, even the tiny round “snake eye ones and is renowned for how exquisitely aligned the stone clusters and rows of stones are on his pieces. Even at his age Paul continues to experiment with new jewelry techniques and design styles. He especially enjoys working unusual textures created on metals and will often incorporate a new surface finish or other design application to see if these changes might enhance the jewelrys appearance and appeal. Though his forte has always been more traditional even vintage looking Navajo style jewelry, his contemporary designs are also in high demand. Paul Livingston creates beautiful jewelry using stones that arent often found in Native American jewelry. The intricate ‘saw work designs of his pieces are especially difficult to achieve but so very visually appealing in Pauls finished work.

Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) Santo Domingo silver turquoise nugget cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics. Solid sterling silver, unusual early work by Vidal Aragon that demonstrates the diversity of his skill as a silversmith. Circa mid 20th century. 6 1/8" inside including the 1 1/8" gap 5" from terminal to terminal without the gap. From Santo Domingo Pueblo, Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) translated pueblo life into intricate storyteller jewelry. He became internationally renown for his inventive silver and gold overlay designs. His representations of the elements of nature, animals and pueblo life are symbolic of the Indian way. One symbol refers to “everlasting happiness. Other common motifs are animals and the tracks they make and the blessing and nourishment of corn. An expert craftsman, Aragon drew each story strip with his saw blade and soldered it to a textured oxidized underlayer to illuminate the images. He often incorporated a trademark gold disk to represent the sun or moon. Vidal Aragon learned the overlay technique in the 1930s when he was a student at the Santa Fe Indian School. Before inventing the storyteller jewelry, he experimented with tufa casting and other metalworking techniques. He briefly lived in Scottsdale where he honed his skills as a shop smith. He has fond memories of the time he spent learning ballet as a young man in Phoenix. By the early 1940s, Vidal was already being recognized alongside such prominent smiths as Ambrose Roanhorse and Tom Burnsides for his innovative yet classical designs. Aragon found his true calling though when he began to translate his rich sense of the pueblo way of life into wearable stories, often full of his unique humor.
