Very special early Navajo watch bracelet with intricate<br>stamping that is filled with grime. All these channels have intricate stampwork<br>but like I said are filled with 90 years of grime. I cleaned it a little before<br>taking the pics, none after of course. I'm sure it could be soaked, but really<br>it's great and "no brainer" old, I'm not messing with it anymore. 6.75" Gary Reeves (1962-2014) Navajo heavy stamped silver and turquoise bracelet<br>21mm wide in center.<br><br>Navajo silversmith Gary Reeves was born in 1962 in Gallup, N.M. and died July<br>2014. Super clean with no detectable damage or wear inside or out. I don't believe it has ever been worn. Hallmarked by artist twice in interior, hallmarked 14k 3 times in interior.  This bracelet it composed of 14k gold, Gem Silica, Natural Australian Opal, Carnelian, Chalcedony, and Lapis Lazuli.   Duane Maktima was studying education at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, when a dean suggested he switch his major to art. “ I thought it would be a hobby.” Growing up in tiny towns in Arizona under the tutelage of his Hopi and Laguna relatives, Maktima learned how to carve and paint, but these artworks were referred to as “blessings” and not art. The Dean, having seen Duane’s work was insistent. When Maktima first laid eyes on the jewelry in the jewelry lab, he says, “It was like my whole life flashed before my eyes, I was hooked.” It took a decade for Maktima to complete his degree. He left college to work as a resident artist at the nearby Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff. At only 19 years old he was given a studio and stipend to make jewelry which was snapped up by visitors from around the world.  Eventually he embarked on a personal retreat from the pressure and spent 3 years at Laguna Pueblo. Maktima worked there as a survey helper and everyday he walked the country from Second Mesa to Black Mesa.  During these long walks he came to deeply appreciate his heritage and decided to complete his education. When he did return to university, it was an exciting time for Native American artists. His research into African and Indian art led him create spiritual based  pieces from beads, shell work mosaics, motifs from Hopi pottery, hollow silver tubes, gold , lapis, turquoise , and red coral. In 1982, Maktima,  received a second-ever fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts. He moved to Sante Fe a year later. An active community leader,  he has influenced many young people to pursue a career in art.  His brooches, buckles, and other exquisite jewelry have been featured in some of the best Native American galleries. In 1990, Northern Arizona University honored the artist with its 2000 Distinguished Alumni Artist Award, Distinguished Achievement Award, and member of the President’s Circle. Maktima credits his achievements to his education and his family. “I can hear grandpa saying, ‘You have really learned something. You’ve really excelled with what God gave you.’ ” According to his grandfather, the name “Maktima” means “searching for eagles.”

These talented<br>silversmiths have been creating traditional Navajo jewelry since 1969. They came<br>from families well known for their jewelry making. Wilson’s father, Luke, taught<br>John Adair, author of “Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths” how to make sand cast<br>jewelry. He worked for many years with Mike and Dean Kirk, at the famous Kirk<br>Brothers Trading Company in Gallup, New Mexico.<br><br>Carol’s parents, Angela and Allen Chee were both silversmiths who worked by C.G.<br>Wallace, the famous jewelry trader from Zuni, New Mexico.<br><br>The Begays began their career making sandcast jewelry, a traditional type of<br>Navajo jewelry that requires the artist to make carvings in Tufa stone to make<br>forms to shape molten silver. They first worked for Tobe Tupen, a well known<br>trader in Gallup. Carol remembers that silver was only $1.25 an ounce when they<br>started.<br><br>Today they are independent artists whose work is widely sought after and<br>admired. Wilson concentrates on the casting and building the foundations of the<br>jewelry and Carol sets the stones and does the finishing work. They work<br>together to design their jewelry.<br><br>Traditional sandcast silver jewelry is a unique Navajo art form. The process,<br>although it sounds simple, requires careful discipline and years of practice to<br>obtain quality results.<br><br>The artist takes two pieces of pumice stone and grinds them together to create<br>two flat surfaces. Then the design is carved into one of the two pumice stones.<br>An opening is carved from the design to the top and bottom of the stone. The two<br>pieces of stone are then tied together so that the carved design is between the<br>two flat areas. Silver is then melted in a crucible, and when it reaches the<br>proper molten form, it is poured into the opening on the top of the design. If<br>it is the proper temperature, it flows through to the bottom where it cools and<br>hardens, filling the design space. After cooling, the stones are separated, the<br>casting removed and the protrusions on the top and bottom are cut off. The<br>silver is then filed smooth and shaped.<br><br>If stones are to be set on the piece, the artist builds a silver bezel to hold<br>the stone and then solders it to the piece of jewelry. Sawdust is put in the<br>bottom of the bezel to cushion the stone and the bezel is tightened. The piece<br>is then polished to the shine the artist likes.<br><br>Wilson Begay of Gallup is the acknowledged master of the art of sandcast<br>jewelry. Luke Begay, Wilson's grandfather, demonstrated this skill to John Adair<br>in the early 1930's when Adair was conducting a survey of native silversmiths of<br>the Smithsonian. Luke taught the skill to Wilson as a young man. Today, in his<br>60's, Wilson continues to make sandcast jewelry in his Gallup home. His wife,<br>Carol, chooses the stones to be used and sets them in bezels. The Begays have<br>three daughters, Nichole, Yvonne and Bonnie, are continuing the family<br>tradition.<br><br>Wilson's stamped signature is a flat brimmed Navajo hat with his initials under<br>it. His signature is one of the most recognized in Indian jewelry. Fits up to a 6 3/8" wrist, tapers from 20mm to 30mm wide. One of a kind bracelet, extremely rare example in gold. Preston Monongye did not work in a lot of gold, very few pieces have come to market ever, when they do they are crazy expensive. I personally had this machine tested on a $30,000+ XRF machine and it ranges from 40-43% gold (Averaging about 10k) which actually makes perfect sense. Since P Monongye didn't work with a lot of gold, the times he did were likely somewhat experimental. In this case it is somewhat obvious that he melted up some scrap gold, likely some that was brought to him by a customer or friend to make this which was likely a custom piece. The lowest gold content shot we took showed it at 48.13% copper, 40.08% gold, 8.18% silver, 3.49% zinc, and .12% Nickel.Preston Monongye (1927-1987) was an influential proponent of what he called “the new Indian art.” He wrote, “We may use old techniques, along with old designs taken from potsherds or pictographs, but then we redesign them or add innovations of our own.”Preston had an unconventional and late blossoming path to jewelry making. He served in two wars, worked in law enforcement, and was an employee for the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It was later in life that he decided to dedicate himself full time to jewelry making, which was received numerous awards. He had always experimented with jewelry and craftsmanship, but did not receive acclaim until fully committing to his art. Preston primarily did the metalwork and design for his pieces, letting his friend and acclaimed lapidary artist Lee Yazzie do the inlay, and later allowing his son Jesse Monongye to do his lapidary work. His pieces are exhibited nationwide.Born in East Los Angeles, California, to Mexican and Mission Indian parents, Monongye was adopted by a Hopi family at age seven. He was raised Hopi, speaking the Hopi language and participating in the Katsina Society. At age nine, Monongye began apprenticeship with his uncle, the master silversmith and painter Gene Pooyama. “He taught me how to live the ‘Hopi way,'” Monongye recalled. Throughout his career, Hopi colors and images were prominent in Monongye’s work.But Monongye was adamant that Native jewelry not be bound by the past, explaining, “An old piece of philosophy given to me by my father and other men of the Hopi Mesas is, ‘If you can progress without hurting your tradition or your , you should do so.”Born in 1927, in Los Angeles he was abandoned at Hopi at age seven and adopted by a prominent Hopi family. Monongye attended reservation schools and became a full participant in Hopi and social life. Following his service as a paratrooper in World War II, Monongye became a Kachina painter, working occasionally for trader Roman Hubbell and the Fred Harvey Company. Monongye re-enlisted during the Korean War and later worked in law enforcement for the Bureau of Indian Affairs while continuing to paint and make silver jewelry. After leaving his job in favor of jewelry making in the early 1960s, Monongye quickly became recognized as an innovative designer and technician, immersing himself in “the new Indian art,” using traditional techniques and motifs to create a contemporary new look. He was best known for cast silver set with stones that often were cut by his friend Lee Yazzie, and later by his son Jesse. Monongye taught his art at various schools and workshops and lectured widely on contemporary Native design. He won many awards at shows and competitions and his jewelry appears in museum collections such as the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff and the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe.

Part Apache and part German, artist Marc Antia is a self-taught silversmith that has being making jewelry for decades. When he isn’t masterfully working on new pieces, he travels across the United States to display his work at Native American jewelry and craft shows. Marc has created a following for his elaborate stamped jewelry. He often combines sterling silver and 14k gold to make pendants, rings, and cuffs. Despite the formality presented by his use of gold in Marc’s jewelry, the durability of his pieces is apparent; upon wearing, one immediately knows this is something that can take the abuse of a daily wear. And yet, they are surprisingly lightweight. One well-versed in Native American jewelry might notice that the traditional Navajo stamp style seen in Marc’s jewelry is liken to a fellow Native American artist’s work: Emerson Bill. The shepherdess moves along her sheep and goat in this hallmarked cuff by the master of pictorial silverwork.Clarence LeeNavajo SilversmithBorn in 1952 in Ft. Defiance, AZ, Clarence Lee was the second oldest of six children. His parents, Tom and Emma Rose Lee raised their children in Twin Lakes, NM. Currently, all his siblings work with silver to one degree or another with the exception of a sister who works in the health care system.Clarence learned his craft from his late father Tom Lee who built and owned a Trading Post in Twin Lakes and learned how to make silver jewelry to supplement his income when business at the Trading Post was slow. Tom Lee fought in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, was a POW for four years and a survivor of the infamous “Death March of Bataan.” He later became New Mexico’s first Native American State Senator. Clarence’s mother, Emma was recognized in her own right as the maker of the first Navajo Nation Flag.Clarence discovered his love of art work in elementary school when a teacher saw promise and encouraged him to pursue his talent. Later on at Tohatchi High School in New Mexico he met his first real art teacher Mrs. Hale. Clarence favored his art classes over academic classes because he suffered from dyslexia. In school he made metal sculptures and worked in oil and watercolors. (Clarence still paints occasionally.)Mrs. Hale also saw potential yet admonished him, “Don’t start giving stuff away.” Her comments did not discourage him and while he was still in high school continued selling his jewelry to teachers. In addition to his art, Clarence was interested in rodeo and participated in calf and team roping events. Throughout his high school years, Clarence continues to help his father sell traditional jewelry. When financial pressures grew Clarence left school just short of his high school graduation to support his family.His first pieces of silver work were traditional hammering and stamp work set with stones. Clarence developed his own unique style almost by accident when he shaped a piece of silver resembling a dog. “I did that for eight months and sort of fell over backwards into storyteller style. I made my first bracelet and pin. I didn’t set any stones in my work until later.”His ideas come from his childhood memories of summers spent with his great grandmother at her summer home in the mountains. He remembers herding sheep and cattle near his home with friends and relatives. Images of windmills, water barrels, old trucks, wood stoves, dogs and rabbits are reflected in his artwork today. Along the way he has added whimsical animals, cowboys, dancers, children and many other images to his collection.Clarence prefers to sell his jewelry at Indian shows and present his work in competitions and exhibitions. HIs first show was at the Grand Canyon in Arizona. In early years he struggled to make a name in the art world and support his family. Fortunately, the first few shows provided the emerging silversmith encouragement. “I got a good response and it just opened up from there.”His first competitive show was at the Navajo Nation Fair where his work garnered a first place ribbon in 1977. “ I started signing using an engraver at the beginning, using my family’s registered brand stamp. Using the brand was my dad’s idea, but by 1988 I added my own signature.”In 1976, Clarence married and later that year his son Russell was born. By 1980 Clarence was a divorced single parent raising his four year old son and began taking his son along to all his shows.“When Russell was about ten or so he wanted a toy he saw at the mall. I told him you have to earn it by selling something first.” From there Russell was encouraged to try his hand as a silversmith. Russell followed his father’s footsteps and eventually entered various junior competitions winning numerous awards for his work. Russell hoped to go to college after he graduated from high school but during his senior year Russell’s responsibilities in the family jewelry business began to rapidly grow. Russell postponed his college plans to tend the family business, a business that has not slowed down since. Now as an adult, Russell helps full time with the jewelry business work. An apprentice and talented artist in his own right, Russell fashions most of the tiny figures his father incorporates into his storyteller images.Three museums currently display pieces made by Clarence and Russell. You can see a bracelet on display at the San Diego Museum of Man in San Diego, California. In June 2006, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, Indiana purchased the 3-D card holder, “Mr. Yazzie goes to town” that will remain in their permanent collection.
