No issues.Master Hopi silversmith Steve Wikviya LaRance was born 1958 in Phoenix, Arizonabut spent part of his childhood with his grandparents in the Hopi village of Moencopi. At Hopi he learned the traditional Hopi arts and those ceremonial designs are a part of his distinctive tufa cast jewelry today. Steve says "When we create art, we share a piece of ourselves with the world."Steve’s distinctive, tufa-cast jewelry uses traditional Native symbols, like petroglyphs, dragonflies, kachina figures and water signs, in creative contemporary ways. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said.The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Her jewelry features an old family design copyrighted in the early 1960s: a domed, natural leave motif in sterling silver alongside a carved, bezeled and polished turquoise stone. Felicita and Ben have passed their respect for quality on to their 13 children, many of whom create their own pottery and jewelry.Daughter Bernadette Eustace says, “My parents told us that if we were going to do jewelry at all, we would have to do it their way, the right way. Typically a huge ring is in the 30<br>gram range, this is 110.5 grams size 8, contemporary ring by a well known and<br>respected artisan with no damage or detectable wear. 3" x 4" face.<br><br>Navajo artist Ernest R. Begay Sr. was born and raised in Kayenta - Chilchinbeto,<br>AZ. In 1975-76, Ernest took a silversmithing class at Monument Valley High<br>School. “We used copper in the class, but that’s where I got my start. I took<br>the class because it looked like something fun and easy to do. I used to watch<br>my brother-in-law, and his father make jewelry, they used to give me scrap<br>silver to work with,” recalls Ernest.<br><br>Ernest’s career in jewelry making didn’t really take off until he entered some<br>rather distinguished pieces into the Navajo Nation Fair and the Gallup<br>Intertribal Indian Ceremonial. Here, he received many awards and ribbons, which<br>helped him begin his career as jewelry artist.<br><br>Over the years, Ernest has slowly built a reputation for coral and turquoise<br>cluster work on heavy gauge silver with deep custom-designed stamp work. Ernest<br>gets much inspiration from traditional and old jewelry styles. “Concho belts,<br>squash blossoms, bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, and belt buckles, I do<br>them all in my own signature old style series. This old style jewelry always<br>caught my eye. I used to go to the Trading Posts just to look at some of the old<br>pawn on display. The ones that caught my attention were always the pieces that<br>used the thick silver, and the stamp work on them,” says Ernest. Ernest now<br>lives in New Mexico with his wife, Readda, and twins Ernest Jr. and Faith Begay.

I've had quite a few both Richard and Jared Chavez pieces that weren't marked but were purchased directly from them.Jared J. Chavez I began my journey as an artist learning to craft jewelry from my father, Richard I Chavez, a renowned lapidary artist. I was not given exact direction as to what to make but was only given the tools and instruction on how to use them. Along the way my work would be critiqued by my father and I would continually strive to evolve my designs and fabrication processes. He stressed the quality of the design and construction making sure that every aspect of a piece looked “finished” and no corners were cut.Along with all that I learned in my father’s studio, I would receive a Bachelor of Arts from Georgetown University in Studio Arts with a focus in Digital Art and Printmaking. After I graduated, I would attend The Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts’, Intensive Bench Jeweler Program in San Francisco. Each of these educational experiences added a particular technical or visual aspect to my work and would encourage me to continue to explore all the ways I could enhance my designs.My current work focuses on the reflective nature of polished silver. Though fabrication, metal stamping, and some casting, I explore how light and reflection interacts with the materials I utilize. I’ve found that polished silver takes in the colors and the light of the world around, and through the use of surface texture a dynamic play of light is created across the surface of my designs. I further enhance my work thought the use of semi-precious stones (agates, quartzs, jades, etc.). However one of the most important qualities in my selection of stones is often translucency. I’ve found that by allowing light to shine though a stone an overall rich and warm effect is created in the overall design.Along with my yearly schedule of shows where I sell my designs, I’ve also made it a point to educate the public about my work. Growing up in my father’s studio, I always saw just how much of himself he put into his designs and how sometimes he was met with disbelief as to how much work was put into his pieces. I found this to be a similar case when I entered the business, as the general public only sees the finished piece. For that reason, though in person demonstrations and self-produced video mini-documentaries, we’ve made it a point to show the skill, time, and passion that goes into every design. Really<br>big and heavy ring with top quality turquoise, no damage.<br><br>Charles Johnson<br><br>Charles was taught silversmithing from his parents at about the age of 15, and<br>continued to learn on his own during the summers. His parents are lifetime<br>silversmith’s with his mother’s family having 5 generations, and his father’s<br>family with 2 generations. Charles has worked full-time as a silversmith since<br>the age of 20. He first started inlaying at the age of 13 for a few years while<br>learning both.Starting with traditional Navajo jewelry, Charles then went into<br>Navajo contemporary jewelry, then onto the Western style with swirl design<br>cutouts. The majority of his jewelry are cutout overlay on bracelets, and<br>buckles with Petroglyph designs (Anasazi drawings). He also enjoys bracelet<br>overlay with Western style and swirl design.
