1" Antonio Pineda (1919-2009) Taxco Sterling belt buckle 57.7 grams, very sturdy, other measurements in pics. This is an extremely high quality and good looking buckle. Due to reflections it's difficult to present items of this type in the light the deserve in the time available to me.Antonio Pineda
(1919-2009)In the mountain town of Taxco in Mexico’s state of Guerrero,
large-scale mining can be dated to thesixteenth century, and silver is a way of
life. In the years following the Mexican Revolution (1910–20), jewelry and other
silver objects were crafted there with an entirely innovative approach,
informedby modernism and the creation of a new Mexican national identity. Today,
at the age of 89, AntonioPineda is one of two living members of the Taxco School
and is recognized as a world-class designerand a Mexican national treasure.
Nearly two hundred examples of Pineda’s acclaimed silver work willbe displayed
in Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda, a
travelingexhibition debuting at the Fowler Museum Aug. 24, 2008.Significantly,
given Pineda’s many accomplishments and international renown, he identifies
himselfprimarily as a taxqueño, or Taxco, silversmith. From its inception, the
Taxco movement broke newground in technical achievement and design. While
American-born, Taxco-based designer WilliamSpratling has been credited with
spearheading the contemporary Taxco silver movement, it was agroup of talented
Mexican designers who went on to establish independent workshops and develop
thedistinctive “Taxco School.” These designers incorporated numerous aesthetic
orientations—Pre-Columbian art; silverwork, images, and other artwork from the
Mexican Colonial period; andlocal popular arts—merging them within the broad
spectrum of modernism.Pineda himself is lauded for his bold designs and
ingenious use of gemstones. Silver Seduction tracesthe evolution of his work
from the 1930s–70s, and includes more than fifty each of necklaces andbracelets,
as well as numerous beautiful rings, earrings and diverse examples of his
hollowware andtableware. All of the works feature Pineda’s hard-to-achieve
combination of highly refined and hand-wrought appeal.Pineda’s jewelry is
especially known for its elegant acknowledgment of the human form. It is
oftensaid that a Pineda fits the body perfectly, that it feels right when it is
worn. So, for example, a thickgeometric necklace that might at first glance seem
too weighty or rigid to wear comfortably is, in fact, faceted, hinged, or
hollowed in such a way that it gracefully encircles the neck or drapes
seductivelydown the décolletage. In addition, no other taxqueño jeweler used as
many costly semiprecious stones or set them with asmuch ingenuity, skill, and
variety as did Pineda. Only the most talented of silversmiths could master

12.75" Texas Studio Art Glass Vase Michael McDougal 7" wide No cracks, chips, scratches, or restorations. Inspired by nature and known for his sense of color and elegant whimsy, Glass artist Michael McDougal lives and works in the Texas Hill Country. He was introduced to glass by Jane Duryea, protégé of Robert Willson and went on to study at the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the prestigious Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State, under Jane Bruce, Claire Kelly & Antony Schafermeyer and Boyd Sugiki. McDougal has spent time in the "fornaces" of Murano, Italy, as well. Today, he works with his friend and mentor Jason Lawson in studios in Fischer, Texas, a small town north of San Antonio. "Glass is an astoundingly versatile medium," says McDougal."It has an inherent music in it. Working with it in molten form is rhythmic… more of a dance than a process.” Michael Monroe, former curator and director of the Smithsonian Institution's Renwick Gallery describes a pitcher from McDougal's collection as "…capturing the essence of molten glass in a moment of frozen elegance. The handle, with its dynamic but delicate pattern is beautifully integrated to give both a sense of motion and balance to the piece." "Whether appreciating it or creating it, I love art that elicits a sense of wonder, a sense of awe, makes me grin or laugh," says McDougal. "Whether an exploration of beauty, whimsy, or that huge realm of the unknown, it must remind me that all our human stresses and strains are insignificant.” McDougal's work is featured in galleries throughout Texas and California. He has been featured in shows in Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Houston and Galveston, among other cities.

1329 Gram Labradorite Specimen. 7 3/8" x 3.5" x 2", large polished specimen. There are few gemstones that display the 'play-of-color' phenomenon better than Labradorite, reds, blues, purples, yellows and more dance before your eyes as it turns in your hand but there is much more to discover about this rare beauty. The Schiller effect, labradorescence, light interference, lattice distortions are some of the scientific explanations for flashes of color in Labradorite gemstones which we can go into later but perhaps the Inuit people of Labrador in Canada explain it best by saying that the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis were trapped within Labradorite rocks. The story goes that a mighty Eskimo warrior freed the colors that dazzle the Polar skies with blows from his spear but could not break all the rocks leaving a number of Labradorite gemstones for us to collect then carve, polish and admire to this very day. isshelf

15th/16th century Vellum Antiphonal leaf. This is on Vellum/hide. There are some tears but it's stable in the frame. For some weird reason there is clear tape on the back of the glass and a little on the front, possibly they taped the two panes together and over time the tape degraded a little, still it displays well. Slightly illuminated in the picture shown. 22.5" x 16" framed. The origins of liturgical music traditionally date back to St. Gregory the Great (d. 604), who was inspired by the Holy Dove to record the principles of 'Gregorian' chant. The Gradual contained the musical parts of the Missal and was sung from the steps (gradus) of the altar. The Antiphoner contained the musical sections of the Breviary. These terms have become interchangeable in modern times. Because of their size and complexity, these manuscripts were still being handmade in the traditional way for centuries after the introduction of printing. They were boldly hand-written and illuminated on large sheets of sturdy vellum so that the entire choir could read from one book.
