Great with<br>natural stones/shell from the third quarter of the 20th century, no damage or<br>wear. 37.6 grams.<br><br>A traditional Pueblo jewelry adornment, a jacla is two loops of heishi that were<br>originally earrings and sometimes fastened to the bottom of a stone necklace as<br>a pendant-like attachment.<br><br>Jacla is Navajo for “ear string”. The Navajo spelling is the most commonly used<br>version of the word. Jocla is also common but jackla is a phonetic mis-spelling.<br>Although jaclas are attributed to the Rio Grande Pueblo Indians, they were<br>traded with other tribes so have become associated with the Navajo as well. They<br>are seen in vintage photos being worn by members of all southwest tribes, both<br>men and women.<br><br>In the oldest style necklaces, the jacla is a pair of loop earrings tied onto<br>the necklace.

7 1/8" Navajo Richard Begay Heavy stamped sterling silver bracelet
7 1/8" Navajo Richard Begay Heavy stamped sterling silver bracelet. Very well made, thick and heavy bracelet with no issues.Richard Begay was a Navajo Silversmith from Pinon Arizona. Richard passed away June 1, 2013 and we pay tribute to this remarkable individual. His work is displayed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC and the Heard Museum in Phoenix AZ.He was known for both contemporary and traditional jewelry, as well as his innovative inlay designs. His work is represented in many collections and museums both nationally and internationally.Richard was born and raised in Navajoland, Arizona. Throughout his art classes in school, he always wanted to create the perfect shape. He soon realized that he wanted to create beautiful jewelry. He had been a silversmith since 1974.He borrowed jewelry tools from his father-in-law and set to work, learning the demanding craft of silversmithing.Richard was immediately drawn to the intricate inlay work for which he is known. As he perfected his craft, Richard explored different techniques of inlaying, always searching for the best way, the most beautiful setting, the perfect harmony of material and craft. He also developed an eye for choosing the best stones for his inlay. Turquoise and coral are his favorite, but Richard used a wide variety of stones and shells, including malachite, spiny oyster, and pacific coral. Not limited to the usual in anything he does, he also inlays opals, sugilite, lapis and other exotic stones into his award-winning pieces. The importance of harmony in his work is echoed in his silverwork. He incorporates important symbols from his culture. Corn was a significant gift to the People by the Creator--it represents life to the Navajo. The Yei-Be-Chai is the personal link between the Navajo s and mortal man. The Bear, one of the four animals given to the first people, embodies power and wisdom. It was provided for protection and guidance, and to ward off evil. Richard also uses the Steppe Design found in the wedding baskets and recreates special times, such as the social dances he went to. Encircling it all is his extraordinary inlay, adding color and life. The beautiful things Richard looks for exist in his creations. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. Fred Harvey Era Native American Sterling/Hubbel glass Heavy stamped cuff
Fred Harvey Era Native American Sterling/Hubbel glass Heavy stamped cuff. Nice<br>large cuff 42.8 grams, marked and tested sterling with no other markings. 6.5"<br>including the 1.25" gap 1.5" wide in center.<br><br><br>Hubbell beads were glass beads imported from Italy, Bohemia and later<br>Czechoslovakia. Though there is not significant evidence the practice was be by<br>Lorenzo Hubbell, owner of Hubbell Trading Post, the beads have become associated<br>with his name. They were purchased as a less expensive way of producing jewelry.<br>Since the traders often supplied the Native artists with the materials for<br>jewelry sold at the trading posts, the traders looked for ways to lower the<br>costs of producing enough jewelry to meet the market demand. They found one way<br>through the cottage crafters in areas such as Czechoslovakia.<br><br>By the turn of the twentieth century, Czech bead makers were exporting large<br>quantities of glass beads to a worldwide market. They came in a wide array of<br>shapes, sizes and colors. Ones imported to the Southwest were shaped and colored<br>to resemble the turquoise and coral used in Native American jewelry. While their<br>use may have been only a substitute for the real gems that make up true handmade<br>jewelry from the Southwest, their import helped families in areas such as<br>Bohemia make a living during the tumultuous times in Europe.
