Vintage Moorcroft columbine vase
Vintage Moorcroft columbine vase, mid 20th century 4.25" tall x 3" wide. No cracks, chips, or restorations, expected crazing. <br><br>William Moorcroft was employed by Staffordshire pottery manufacturers James Macintyre & Co. Ltd. as a designer in 1897, and after a year he was responsible for the company’s art pottery studio.<br><br>William Moorcroft created designs for the Macintyre’s Aurelian Ware range of high-Victorian pottery, which had transfer-printed and enamelled decoration in bold red, blue and gold colours. He also developed the art nouveau-influenced Florian Ware which was decorated entirely by hand, with the design outlined in trailed slip using a technique known as tubelining. William Moorcroft’s designs won him a gold medal at the St. Louis International Exhibition in 1904.<br><br>Each piece of pottery produced was personalised with Moorcroft’s own signature or initials.<br><br>William Moorcroft and James Macintyre & Co. Ltd. split up in 1913 and Moorcroft founded his own factory nearby. Some finance came from the famous London store Liberty, and Liberty continued to exercise control over Moorcroft until 1962.<br><br>Moorcroft’s reputation was further enhanced with the appointment of the Moorcroft company as Potter to HM The Queen in 1928. On the death of William Moorcroft in 1945, his elder son, Walter, took over management and design and he continued in this position until his retirement in 1987, after which he continued contributing to Moorcroft designs.<br><br>During the tenure of Walter Moorcroft, the Liberty store’s interest in Moorcroft was purchased by Moorcroft in 1962.<br><br>In the 1980s Moorcroft got into financial difficulties as a result of rising wages and fuel, which were exacerbated by the labour intensive techniques employed by Moorcroft and the company went through several changes in ownership with the result that from 1993 the company was controlled by the Edwards family, which is still the case.<br><br>The young 24 year old designer Rachel Bishop joined Moorcroft in 1993, as only its fourth designer in almost a hundred years and her designs become immediately popular. In 1997 the Moorcroft Design Studio was formed with eight designers, and with Rachel Bishop as head designer.<br><br>Moorcroft celebrated its centenary in 1997, marking the year that William Moorcroft joined MacIntyre as its founding date, rather than the year the company was founded.<br><br>Moorcroft is still producing art pottery in it’s own distinctive design style, and with astute promotion and limited edition designs, is selling more than it did in the mid-1920’s, its previous heyday.<br>isshelf

Pizzichillo & Gordon Studio Art Glass Vase
Pizzichillo & Gordon Studio Art Glass Vase 7.25" tall x 6.5" wide.<br>No cracks, chips, or restorations.<br><br>Bruce Pizzichillo and Dari Gordon are internationally known artists who create<br>large, colorful handblown glass vases, sculptural vessels and bowls as well as<br>intriguing glass and mixed media sculptures. Using glassmaking techniques that<br>are thousands of years old, along with many of their own invention, Bruce and<br>Dari melt glass in furnaces that are designed for work in multiple colors. They<br>achieve a palette of distinctive colors by mixing various metallic oxide<br>formulations containing gold, silver, cobalt and others, into the molten glass.<br>They heat the raw materials in large ceramic pots inside a glass furnace at<br>temperatures in excess of 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. As the molten liquid glass<br>achieves a working temperature, the artists gather the fluid substance onto the<br>end of a five foot long steel pipe or rod. They blow, manipulate and shape the<br>mass of molten glass, constantly spinning it and dipping it back into the pot<br>for additional gathers if the piece is exceptionally large. For decoration, they<br>apply shards, frit, bits and strings of colored glass that they have pre-made to<br>the hot surface of the glass, and then reheat the piece to fuse the elements to<br>the surface. When they complete the blowing and shaping process, they remove the<br>piece from the pipe and place it into an annealing oven, where it will cool<br>slowly over a specific period. In general, the larger and thicker the piece, the<br>longer the time required for it to anneal. If not properly annealed, the piece<br>will shatter when exposed to room temperature. Finally, the artists inspect each<br>piece to determine if it meets their standards for first quality. They then<br>proceed with the finishing work, which can include cutting, grinding and<br>polishing before signing the completed piece. Depending on the size and<br>complexity of the piece, the artists may reject half the pieces they make, or<br>more, for lacking the requisites of first quality. Bruce studied at the<br>University of New Mexico and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in glass from<br>the California College of Arts & Crafts, where he studied with world-renowned<br>glass artist Marvin Lipofsky. Bruce has worked with glass since 1976. <br><br>TW9

3 5/8" tall x 2.75" wide with no cracks or chips, no loss of enamel or other<br>issues. Guaranteed circa late 19th century. Selling both for one price.<br><br>Burmese glass is a type of opaque colored art glass, shading from yellow to<br>pink. It is found in either the rare original "shiny" finish or the more common<br>"satin" finish. It is used for table glass and small, ornamental vases and<br>dressing table articles.<br><br>It was made in 1885 by the Mount Washington Glass Company of New Bedford,<br>Massachusetts, USA. Burmese glass found favor with Queen Victoria. From 1886,<br>the British company of Thomas Webb & Sons was licensed to produce the glass.<br>Their version, known as Queen's Burmeseware, which was used for tableware and<br>decorative glass, often with painted decoration. Burmese was also made after<br>1970 by the Fenton art glass company.<br><br>Burmese is a uranium glass. The formula to produce Burmese Glass contains<br>uranium oxide with tincture of gold added. The uranium oxide produced the<br>inherent soft yellow color of Burmese glass. Because of the added gold, the<br>characteristic pink blush of color of Burmese was fashioned by re-heating the<br>object in the furnace. The length of time in the furnace will determine the<br>intensity of the color. Strangely, if the object is subjected to the heat again,<br>it will return to the original yellow color

Randy Strong Art Glass Vase Dated January 1978 887 6.5" tall x 4.5" wide
No scratches, dings, cracks, or chips. Dated January 1978 and numbered 887<br><br>Bio<br><br>Randy Strong<br><br>Winner of the juried 2005 and 2008 Niche award for blown glass and finalist for<br>2010 – awarded by Niche magazine for the best of blown glass in the United<br>States – Randy Strong – artist and designer in hot glass for 40 years, has<br>worked continuously throughout his career producing innovative designs in glass<br>that continually influence the ever changing and growing community of studio<br>glass artists.<br><br>Randy is one of a handful of the early pioneering American Glass Artists to help<br>define American Studio Art Glass. Before he was to enter the world of glass<br>however, he began his broad education in the arts by working in and collecting<br>photography. In the late 60’s he was working as an events photographer for the<br>Oakland Tribune, and for a brief period, was privileged to work with and learn<br>from photographer Ansel Adams. His first taste of working in glass came in 1969<br>at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Calif. where he began<br>by studying ceramics and was fortunate to have as his mentor, the renowned<br>ceramicist, Peter Voulkos. Upon graduation in 1970 he received one of the first<br>scholarships to the University of Art in Osaka, Japan as one of the first<br>exchange students between the Universities of Calif., Calif. College of Arts and<br>Crafts, and Osaka, Japan. That grounding in ceramics led him into the largely<br>unknown (at that time ) frontier of studio art glass. In 1970, he was with Dale<br>Chihuly when Dale and the Haubergs selected the location for the now renowned<br>Pilchuck Glass School in Seattle, Washington – and the journey into that<br>frontier was well underway.<br><br>Many of today’s successful, working glass artists are either former students, or<br>have worked with or for him at one time. His work, ranging from his<br>distinctive crystal and gold goblets and his ground-breaking work with dichroic<br>glass, to his imposing cast sculptures, and now his seemingly gravity defying,<br>color saturated, multi-piece sculptures, have been acquired by collectors<br>internationally and are a part of collections ranging from The Corning Museum in<br>New York, to the Louvre in Paris.<br><br>Randy’s work through the last 4 decades has been characterized by the use of<br>difficult, defining techniques, materials, colors and forms. His newest<br>sculptural work again breaks new ground by challenging the concept of solid form<br>in glass by further expressing its personality in lightness and movement.<br><br>In 1970, he built and established his own studio and gallery in Northern<br>California, where he continues to create, design and teach. After 45 years of<br>making distinctive work in glass, he is continuing to make a limited number of<br>pieces a year while he compiles his book “The Glassmakers”, spotlighting and<br>detailing<br>the history of the pioneers in glass responsible for creating what now exists as<br>the American Glass Movement.

Ishmael Soto(1932-2017) Austin Texas Studio Pottery Abstract Vase
This piece and two more I'm listing are from the Estate of Lael Cater Seagert UT Art Department and later Director of Laa Gloria Art Museum here in Austin so these were likely gifts from Soto as they had signed books from so many Texas Artists that were given to them as gifts. Piece measures 7 5/8" tall x 5.25" wide. No cracks, chips, restorations, or crazing.Below is an excerpt from the artists eulogy.Ishmael Soto, longtime Austin ceramicist and teacher, died Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 84.“Ishmael’s passing is a loss for us all in the community,” said Sylvia Orozco, director of Mexic-Arte Museum. “He was a great human being, teacher and artist. Ishmael was one of the first, if not the first Mexican-American Austinite to become a professional visual artist.”Artist and teacher Ishmael Soto died Feb. 27 at age 84. Contributed by Tahila MintzSoto won many prizes and was exhibited frequently in group and solo shows.A native Austinite, Soto earned his first degree from the University of Texas and his second from the famed Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. His 57th Annual Potters Show and Sale took place in December 2016. He taught ceramics at UT for seven years — one of the first Hispanics to teach in the art department — then at St. Edward’s University and Austin Community College for a total of more than 30 years..“He was a modest, generous mentor and major inspiration to many artists,” said his widow, Cynthia Leigh. “He taught thousands of students over his lifetime. Many of his students decided to become artists from his encouragement and support. He did not try to mold his students to imitate his work; he encouraged them to follow their own artistic path and draw on their own talents. B26

Charles Noke (1858-1941) c1925 Royal Doulton Chang over Sung Flambe Vase
c1925 Royal Doulton Chang over Sung decorated Flambe Signed by Charles Noke<br>(1858 - 1941); Harry Nixon (1886 - 1955). Large, rare, one of a kind and<br>important. 9.75" 24.5cm tall x 6" 15cm wide. No cracks, chips, restorations or<br>wear. Overall crackle glaze from production. This is likely the most fun and<br>interesting piece of pottery I've owned and I've appreciated art pottery the<br>majority of my life. This piece was entirely decorated with the prunus<br>chinoiserie "Sung" decoration (Iridescent branches and flowers) and flambe glaze<br>then they poured this crazy thick Chang glaze on it and just let it run. I feel<br>this is likely a piece from the very beginning of Chang production in 1925 or<br>even before when they were experimenting as it's a most unusual and extremely<br>labor intensive piece, even the bottom seems like a party. In addition to the<br>painted marks and signatures there is also an impressed Doulton and something<br>else that I just couldn't decide what it was. For international shipment it will<br>be sent Fedex so it will be there in less than a week unless you have an<br>objection.<br>B33

Large 1920's Muller Frères Cameo Glass Landscape vase. 12" tall x 5.25" wide<br>with no cracks, chips, or restorations. tw108<br><br>Cameo glass is a luxury form of glass art produced by cameo glass engraving or<br>etching and carving through fused layers of differently colored glass to produce<br>designs, usually with white opaque glass figures and motifs on a dark-colored<br>background. The technique is first seen in ancient Roman art of about 30 BC,<br>where it was an alternative to the more luxurious engraved gem vessels in cameo<br>style that used naturally layered semi-precious gemstones such as onyx and<br>agate. Glass allowed consistent and predictable colored layers, even for round<br>objects.<br><br>From the mid-19th century there was a revival of cameo glass, suited equally to<br>Neo-Grec taste and the French Art Nouveau practiced by Émile Gallé. Cameo glass<br>is still produced today.<br><br>Muller Frères (Co.) was an esteemed French glassmaking company based in<br>Luneville, France, famous for its Art Nouveau vases, lampshades, and<br>chandeliers, which often incorporate layered and colored glass. Their workshop<br>was established by Henri Muller and his brothers in 1895 after they trained with<br>Émile Gallé—who would retain a grudge against Muller for setting up a rival<br>enterprise. In 1910, the company began making lamps in association with Chapelle<br>and, at its height, employed around 300 workers. Production was stopped in 1933<br>and the factory closed three years later, a victim of the Great Depression.

Early Van Briggle Cabinet vase
Early Van Briggle Cabinet vase. Teens-20's 4" tall with no cracks, chips, restorations, or crazing. tw122Van Briggle Art Pottery was at the time of its demise the oldest continuously operating art pottery in the United States, having been established in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1901 by Artus and Anne Van Briggle. Artus had a significant impact on the Art Nouveau movement in the United States, and his pottery is foundational to American Art Pottery. The Art Nouveau style favored by its founders continues to influence the pottery's designs. Artus Van Briggle settled in Colorado Springs in 1899 after establishing himself as a notable artist with the Rookwood Pottery of Ohio. With Anne Louise (née Gregory), his new wife, Artus began exploring the Art Nouveau style in their pottery creations, drawing awards and accolades from the American and European art communities. Although he was a talented painter who had displayed and won awards in Europe, from 1899 until his death Artus devoted himself almost exclusively to the craft and art of pottery. Van Briggle's Art Nouveau designs and distinctive matte glazes were awarded high honors from prestigious sources, including the Paris Salon, the Saint Louis Exposition, the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, and the American Arts and Crafts Exhibition in Boston. The Van Briggle Pottery Studio closed in spring 2012Artus Van Briggle in 1900. Born to artistic parents on March 21, 1869, Artus Van Briggle had an early introduction to painting using materials found about the home. The Van Briggle family lived in Ohio, one of America's hotbeds of ceramic design. At the age of 17 he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he decorated china dolls at the Arnold Fairyland Doll Store, while attending his early art studies at the Cincinnati Art School. After a stint at the Avon Pottery where he was introduced to the ceramic arts, Artus took a job at Rookwood Pottery; there he excelled at hand-painting designs. His skill and talent were recognized by Rookwood founder, Maria Storer, who became his benefactor, even sending him to France to study art at the Académie Julian in Paris. In Europe, he was exposed to styles of art and became infatuated with an early matte glaze from the Chinese Ming Dynasty; a type that was lost to history. Artus also met his future wife, fellow American student Anne Lawrence Gregory, an accomplished artist in her own right. Finishing their Paris studies in 1896, they returned to America. Artus resumed his work at Rookwood and also started sculpting and experimented with recreating the lost Ming Dynasty glazes.Perfecting the distinctive dull or matte glaze In 1899, struggling with health issues due to tuberculosis, Artus left Rookwood and moved to the drier air of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Upon befriending the Holmes family of Chico Basin, he stayed at the HOP Ranch during the summers of 1899, 1900, and 1901 to reduce work stress and regain strength while pursuing his own styles of pottery, centered around the Art Nouveau movement. He continued his research on the ancient matte glazes that fascinated him in Paris. After two years of trials and experiments a matte glaze was perfected. One of the matte glazes perfected by Artus was the matte blue glaze, based on an ancient Chinese process that had long been lost to history.Artus opened Van Briggle Pottery in 1901 and was joined by Anne Gregory, who took a position as a high school art teacher in Colorado Springs. In 1903, Artus Van Briggle was appointed First Director of the Department of Art and Design in Colorado College, succeeding Louis Soutter, a Swiss artist (born in Geneva, Switzerland) he met in Paris in 1895.In 1902, Anne and Artus were married, and she devoted herself to their pottery; she created designs and collaborated in all aspects of the enterprise with her husband. Late 1902 brought Van Briggle awards for his glazes and designs in Art Nouveau from the prestigious Paris Salon; he was now an accepted artist. During their early years, Artus and Ann established hundreds of Art Nouveau styles of pottery under the Van Briggle name. The Despondency vase won Van Briggle wide acclaim and first place at the Paris Salon in 1903. A display at the 1904 Centennial Exhibit in St. Louis won Van Briggle more awards and greater international fame. Van Briggle Memorial Pottery Pottery loses its founder Artus Van Briggle died in July 1904, at the age of 35. Anne continued the pottery using the forms created by Artus as a foundation and adding more designs of her own. In 1907, Anne and pottery stockholder and city-founder William Jackson Palmer began construction on a new pottery on Uintah Street. The Van Briggle Memorial Pottery — designed by Dutch architect Nicholas Van den Arend — was opened in 1908 and stands today as an historic landmark noted for its architecture and use of ceramics in the facade.Having remarried in 1908, Anne Louise Gregory Ritter leased the pottery in 1912 to Edmund deForest Curtis, who ran it until 1916. She sold the company in 1922 to J.F. and I.H. Lewis and moved to Denver the following year, where she would concentrate on painting and where she remained until her death in 1929. In her absence, the pottery fell under financial hardships and was sold at sheriff's auction; later it was re-sold, once more becoming the property of Mr. Curtis.Surviving disaster and war The pottery was sold twice more in the ensuing decade and survived a fire in 1919 that gutted the interior but left the brick shell and kilns. New owners I.F. and J.H. Lewis took the opportunity to modernize and expand the facility beginning in 1920 and stabilized the production and financial aspects of the pottery for the first time. Despite damage from the flood of 1935—the most destructive flood in Colorado Springs history — that destroyed much of the company's records and molds, the pottery continued to enjoy success up to World War II, when they closed for approximately three years as the United States focused its resources on the war effort. With the increase of interstate travel in the United States a freeway was planned in 1953 for Colorado Springs which J.H. Lewis estimated would run through the Memorial Plant site. Although the freeway eventually was planned to avoid destroying the historic pottery, Mr. Lewis nonetheless put into action plans to relocate the pottery to a higher-traffic area of Colorado Springs. In 1955, Mr. Lewis and Clem Hull brought a new facility on line at a renovated railroad roundhouse on Midland Road. The new facility, known as the Midland Plant, had a smaller capacity but enjoyed quick success due to its location on the main highway to the Garden of the Gods and other tourist locations. In 1968, Mr. Lewis sold the Memorial Plant to Colorado College, and it fell into disrepair for the ensuing 40 years, being used variously as offices and storage.

He studied in Dresden, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Paris. His time in<br>Copenhagen included work under Johan Rohde; in Paris he worked under Matisse. In<br>1917, Hald worked briefly at Rorstrand, and then began his long association with<br>Orrefors. At the time Edward Hald joined Orrefors in 1917, the early experiments<br>of Simon Gate and the master glassblower, Knudt Bergkvist, for the Graal<br>technique were still evolving. The Graal technique used acid etching or wheel<br>carving to create thin designs in relief on the surface of multilayer, glass<br>blanks. The carved blanks were then heated to a molten state by glassblowers,<br>encased with an additional layer of clear glass to entrap the design, and<br>finally worked with blowing to a finished state. The result was literally,<br>"painting within the glass".Edward Hald created some of the earliest designs to<br>use the Graal method. He continued to work in Graal throughout his long career,<br>including the heavy "Fish Graal" pieces first shown in 1937. Also "Slip Graal"<br>and "Aqua Graal" were favored techniques. Hald also designed many important<br>engraved pieces such as the "Fireworks" bowl. He retired from Orrefors in 1978.

No damage or restorations to either of the pieces, candle holders are unmarked but from the same estate and obviously match. Selling the set shown. George Rumrill, a Little Rock, Arkansas native, was a founder of the Arkansas Products Company. The Arkansas Products Company was formed to promote Arkansas made products. Two of the products that were promoted were Niloak Pottery from Benton and Camark Pottery from Camden. George Rumrill's position as a founder and promoter of the Arkansas Products Company gave him access to many of the two pottery's catalogs and products. At some point in time, the Arkansas Products Company came to pass and George Rumrill decided to create his own pottery company. Since he had no facilities in which to make pottery, he contacted existing pottery companies to create his line of pottery. RumRill's most popular designs were made by Red Wing Stoneware Company from 1933-1936 and Red Wing Potteries from 1936-1938. Shawnee produced RumRill Pottery in 1938 for a short time. Then Florence and Gonder potteries produced RumRill until his death in 1942. George Rumrill created many of his own designs. It is interesting to note, however, that there are a number of RumRill pieces that are known Camark shapes. With George Rumrill's access to the Camark catalogs and products, this should be no surprise. There are also RumRill pieces that were made from Red Wing molds. Some of RumRill's designs were produced throughout RumRill's existence by all of the contracting pottery companies.
