Antique Norwegian 830 silver mirrors wedding brooch. Late 19th to early 20th century. 3" tall, 15.6 grams with no issues.Really nice pin. Catches the light as you move around.Traditional wedding pin Norway. Great coat lapel or hat pin here. From the Web: The Power of Silver In rural Norway in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, women, men and children wore some kind of silver jewelry every day. Often that silver was in the form of a brooch or slje. Some styles of slje were specific to a region, others were used across the country. Simple pins were worn daily as the only fastener on a shirt or blouse. On special occasions, Norwegians wore more silver with their bunader, festive folk costumes, such as large brooches, buttons and shoe buckles, and finger rings.Silver showed the wealth and prosperity of a family, and Norwegians also believed it cured sickness in humans and animals, improved crops, and protected against storms and evil spirits. Huldrefolk were perhaps thep rimary reason for wearing silver jewelry. Also known as underworld creatures, huldrefolk tried to strengthen their gene pool by marrying humans and stealing children. Rural Norwegians never knew when or where they would encounter a huldrefolk, so they felt it was important to wear silver jewelry daily. The metal itself was strong, and dangling ornaments added protection by reflecting evil away from the wearer. Each time jewelry was worn in churc hor was handed down to the next generation, it became even more powerful.Rites of passage, especially baptism and marriage, were common times of huldrefolk attack, because humans were vulnerable as they changed status. The time between birth and baptism was particularly dangerous for infants because they were in constant danger of being swapped with huldrefolk babies. Parents often pinned a tiny slje on the baby's clothes until baptism provided more permanent protection. Girls might get their first full-sized slje to protec tthem at confirmation. At the precise moment a woman went from being single to married, she risked being taken to the mountain by huldrefolk. Brides wore the most and the finest jewelry, including several large broches, finger rings and bridal necklaces. Women throughout Norway wore special headdresses. Brides in central Norway wore headdresses decorated with beads and dangles. In western and northern Norway, brides wore metal crowns with hanging decorations shaped ike circles, crosses, leaves and birds. the few crowns that existed in a church parish were often available for rent from the owner, usually a minister or wealthy farmer. The Norwegian immigrants often took their bunader with them to their new homes but rarely used them. The did, however, continue to use their sljer.Norwegian women quickly adopted American clothing but proudly wore a slje at the neck to show their Norwegian heritage. Sljer are no longer used for protection; in fact, most wearers today are not even aware of that function which was so important in the past. Silver is still powerful as a symbol of ethnic ancestry.anderas

6 Antique Shiebler American Sterling demitasse spoons. 4" long, 63.8 grams with
no issues. Each with monogram on back.

George W. Shiebler was the owner of a prominent American silversmithing firm
that operated from the late 1800s through the early 20th century. He built his
business by acquiring the factories and equipment of other silver-producing
companies. While his firm made some innovative jewelry designs during its time
in business, the core focus was sterling silver flatware.

George W. Shiebler - History

George W. Shiebler incorporated his silversmithing business, George W. Shiebler
Company, in New York in 1892. He was president, and his brother William F.
Shiebler served as treasurer. “The firm’s history dates back to the acquisition
of Jahne, Smith & Company in which George Shiebler was a salesman and the
partnership Hodenpyl, Tunison & Shiebler circa 1874,” according to author Fred
Rezazadeh in his book Collectible Silver Jewelry.

Shiebler expanded his business by acquiring several other companies, including
Coles & Reynolds and Morgan Morgans Jr., along with the silver dies of many
other related businesses. While showrooms remained in Manhattan, the company
factory was relocated to Brooklyn in the 1890s. In addition to copious amounts
of flatware, the firm made other types of sterling silver goods like tableware,
jewelry, and accessories.

The jewelry produced by this firm largely featured classical themes. As noted on
the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s website, an article in Jewelers’ Circular and
Horological Review compared his pieces featuring imitations of ancient coins to
artifacts “unearthed at Pompeii and Herculaneum.” Some of these pieces feature
both Shiebler and Tiffany & Co. marks. However, adornment was not the primary
work of George W. Shiebler Company, and other goods were produced in far greater
quantities.

By 1910, Shiebler’s business was dissolved. Most of the remaining inventory was
scrapped for its value by new owners. Shiebler was then employed by Gorham until
he died in 1920.

anderas

If the belt doesn't
fit the buckle is worth way more than I'm asking for the combo and will easily
go on another 1" belt.
Belt is 1" wide.

Curious George is George Lapin, a gentleman of prodigious curiosity indeed
judging from his very intriguing store on the Aspen promenade. Your first clue
that his heart belongs to the old west is his slick handlebar mustache, ala
Wyatt Earp. Originally from New York City, Lapin ventured to Aspen about 25
years ago to see a friend and promptly fell in love with the place and all
things western. The results of his passion are displayed in this huge and
amazing store-museum. The place bulges with fascinating memorabilia like antique
rifles and pistols, swords, sheriff’s badges, a Cisco Kid poster, silver boxes,
vintage decks of cards and poker chip caddies. There’s a sumptuous circa 1929
black tooled-leather saddle dripping with ornate silver inlay and conchas for
just $32,500.

Everything has a story. Hanging on the wall is a rifle belonging to Chief Ouray,
presented to him in 1880 by Otto Mears, the great railroad builder of Colorado.
The rifle was something of a thank-you gift to the chief for helping to staunch
the Meeker Massacre some years before. Indian agent Meeker, in a rush of
enthusiasm for turning the natives into farmers, had plowed under the
horse-racing track which they dearly loved. Miffed, they slaughtered the man and
his family. Still, it could have been much worse had not Chief Ouray alerted the
9th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers who rode to the rescue, a bit late for the Meekers.

Another page of history for sale is the rough leather “possibles bag” of Sioux
Chief Red Rainbow, a survivor of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The bag
contains his colt .44 revolver which may have been raised against the ill-fated
Custer in the famous 1876 fight, as well as the chief’s deck of cards which
inexplicably have no spots

Curious George also carries tiny antique s which shoot real s, splendid old
Indian pawn jewelry, new and used cowboy boots, leather vests and jackets, and
an entire wall of belts and cases of silver belt buckles – choose a snarling
bear, a shrieking eagle, a lizard or turtle – in designs plain or fancy. Bill
Clinton, yes, in the flesh, dropped in and scooped up a whole passel of the
shop’s stunning contemporary turquoise and silver jewelry last summer. Nobody
had the nerve to ask him who would be the lucky giftee, reports George, not
quite curious enough this time.

George’s place has just about anything that could strike your fancy, except
maybe a vintage double holster, leather masterfully carved in extravagant
florals, with the big initials HRH on the back. Not long ago, Prince Andrew, of
the British Royals, stopped by and eyed the piece. When he asked the price,
George explained that he was waiting for some high roller to come by with those
initials, so he could really stick it to him. Prince Andrew, who happens to have
a brother who may well see those letters in front of his name in the future,
snickered and doled out the requisite cash. Don’t ask.

anderas
