Silver buckles don't get much better than this. CHALMERS DAY (Hopi b. 1956 – present)Chalmerswas born October 24, 1956 in Keams Canyon, Arizona. Chalmers was given the Hopi name Dap-Hong-Va, and was born to the Corn and Water Clans. He is the grandson of Robert Satala, Sr., one of the Hopi’s earliest silversmiths and a merchant on the First Mesa in Arizona.Chalmers Daylearned his art from the Hopi master,Preston Monongye. As Dr. Gregory Schaaf in his book,American Indian Jewelry Artist Biographiesstates: “Chalmers specializes in very detailed and sophisticated designs in the overlay technique. The quality of his artistry is exceptional. His compositions combine village scenes, cornfields, kachinas and more in a single piece…. His jewelry takes one on a journey into the Hopi world. His designs portray the life of the Hopi, their migrations, ceremonies and spiritual figures. He is recognized as one of the greatest overlay jewelers in history.” In 1976, Chalmers participated in one of Preston’s jewelry classes. Preston continued to advise Chalmers in his jewelry craft. Like the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Indians were the benefactors of the Spaniards’ silversmith tradition. While the two nations’ influences are evident in the art of the other, Hopi jewelry artists sought to distinguish themselves from other Southwestern Indian jewelry artists.Beginning just before WWII, Hopi Indian jewelry artists have developed a characteristic style, one that uses few stones but intricate overlay design work. Today Chalmers Day is the most well-known Hopi jewelry artists. Day has been creating jewelry since 1972. The sterling silver overlay characteristic of Hopi jewelry requires two pieces of silver. Designs are cut into one piece, which is overlaid and soldered to another solid piece. This gives Hopi Indian jewelry depth, which is sometimes accentuated by the use of an oxidized or textured silver base. The brushed or polished overlay stands in brighter contrast to the darker background.Hopi Indian jewelry relies heavily upon traditional symbols and designs, including: cornstalks, bear claws, rain, clouds, man in the maze, sunfaces, kokopellis, and village scenes. The intricacy of the overlay patterns in the small space such as earrings and pendants, in particular, is truly amazing and speaks to the talent of the Hopi Indian jewelry artists. Older Native American jewelry is typically unmarked. If I call it Silver or Ingot I'm guaranteeing it to be 90% or more silver. This isn't something I get confused about. c1930's Navajo Stamped silver link concho belt

    1 in stock

c1930's Navajo Stamped silver link concho belt. Nice heavy hand stamped belt, much thicker gauge silver than most later belts. Each concho measures 1 7/8" x 1.25", it's 54" total length but if you look closely you will see it was originally 38" and at one point a skilled silversmith added 6 links to the belt. This was a long time ago, may have been links from an old belt. But there is a slight variation that I only noticed while taking the pictures. This is a very versatile piece at this length that could possibly be wrapped around some people twice, worn as a necklace doubled or tripled up, some left to hang down, wrapped around a leg and as a belt...whatever your heart desires. It's nice, it's strong, very well made piece from the second quarter of the 20th century that has stood the test of time.Unmarked, tested and guaranteed 90% (coin) silver or higher content. weighs 218 grams. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. Anything marked is guaranteed to be what it's marked, most bracelets are photographed on a 6" wrist (non hairy), rings photographed on the appropriate sized finger when possible. With bracelets if the measurement is not given in the description then inside circumference is shown where the metal meets the number on the the cloth tape measure.

Buckle potentially good for multiple generations.

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. Due to reflections it's difficult to present items of this type in the light the deserve in the time available to me.Antonio Pineda
(1919-2009)In the mountain town of Taxco in Mexico’s state of Guerrero,
large-scale mining can be dated to thesixteenth century, and silver is a way of
life. In the years following the Mexican Revolution (1910–20), jewelry and other
silver objects were crafted there with an entirely innovative approach,
informedby modernism and the creation of a new Mexican national identity. Today,
at the age of 89, AntonioPineda is one of two living members of the Taxco School
and is recognized as a world-class designerand a Mexican national treasure.
Nearly two hundred examples of Pineda’s acclaimed silver work willbe displayed
in Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda, a
travelingexhibition debuting at the Fowler Museum Aug. 24, 2008.Significantly,
given Pineda’s many accomplishments and international renown, he identifies
himselfprimarily as a taxqueño, or Taxco, silversmith. From its inception, the
Taxco movement broke newground in technical achievement and design. While
American-born, Taxco-based designer WilliamSpratling has been credited with
spearheading the contemporary Taxco silver movement, it was agroup of talented
Mexican designers who went on to establish independent workshops and develop
thedistinctive “Taxco School.” These designers incorporated numerous aesthetic
orientations—Pre-Columbian art; silverwork, images, and other artwork from the
Mexican Colonial period; andlocal popular arts—merging them within the broad
spectrum of modernism.Pineda himself is lauded for his bold designs and
ingenious use of gemstones. Silver Seduction tracesthe evolution of his work
from the 1930s–70s, and includes more than fifty each of necklaces andbracelets,
as well as numerous beautiful rings, earrings and diverse examples of his
hollowware andtableware. All of the works feature Pineda’s hard-to-achieve
combination of highly refined and hand-wrought appeal.Pineda’s jewelry is
especially known for its elegant acknowledgment of the human form. It is
oftensaid that a Pineda fits the body perfectly, that it feels right when it is
worn. So, for example, a thickgeometric necklace that might at first glance seem
too weighty or rigid to wear comfortably is, in fact, faceted, hinged, or
hollowed in such a way that it gracefully encircles the neck or drapes
seductivelydown the décolletage. In addition, no other taxqueño jeweler used as
many costly semiprecious stones or set them with asmuch ingenuity, skill, and
variety as did Pineda.
