6" Mark Chee (Navajo) 1914-1981 carinated silver hand stamped cuff bracelets pr
6" Mark Chee (Navajo) 1914-1981 carinated silver hand stamped cuff bracelets pr. Solid sterling silver with weights and measurements in pics. Selling this exact pair shown, likely the only matching pair of Mark Chee cuff bracelets in existence. These will fit up to a 6" wrist, the measure 6" inside circumference including the 1 1/8" gaps. Great pair of bracelets from the 3rd quarter of the 20th century, the chance of finding another matching pair of Mark Chee bracelets is pretty much non-existent. Chee, Mark (1914-1981) Biography Navajo artist, Mark Chee is among the earliest southwest silversmiths. Mark Chee is known for traditional stamp work and high quality stone settings in unusually heavy silver. He was born in Lukachukai, Arizona around 1900 and was sent to government school at Fort Defiance (a United States government practice during that time) from the age of 10 to the 11thgrade. He is the elder brother of Joe Chee. He was active during the 1930s through ‘60s. He specialized in heavy silver in old style designs. He began polishing silver in Julius Gans Southwest Art and Crafts shop in Santa Fe for $5.00 a week. He then bought a few tools and used them all his life. He quickly became an accomplished silversmith and was hired as a bench smith at Frank Patanias Thunderbird Shop and later at Al Packards shop on the Santa Fe Plaza. He was also a bench-smith for the Wooden Indian at Embudo, New Mexico. His hallmark is a stamp of a bird with his last name in the body in Gothic print. There are several versions of this mark but rather than being a separate stamp they may be due to the angle of his strike.

If you would like to chat, that would be great, but lets chat about something that isn‘t answered in this listing that we put so much effort into already :)

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn‘t an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I‘ve seen thousands of pieces xrf‘d to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women‘s wrist.

6.5" Steve Arviso Navajo high grade Nevada Turquoise sterling cuff bracelet
6.5" Steve Arviso Navajo high grade Nevada Turquoise sterling cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics, clean with no issues. Solid sterling, marked as shown. Navajo silversmith Steve Arviso creates jewelry inspired by old Navajo styles with an emphasis on the natural beauty of the stone. He does not believe in forcing his turquoise to become anything other than what it chooses to be. “When I get a piece of turquoise, he explains, “I dont instantly know what Im going to make out of 20, 30 stones, only one turquoise will speak to me. Rather than an artist, Arviso considers himself more of a creator, blowing life into the jewelry. Arviso will put the chosen stone in his pocket and go about his daily chores and routines, such as tending to his Paint horses, which he proudly breeds and raises. He will spend time with his turquoise, allowing him to think about his own life. Whatever feelings and thoughts he experiences while the stone is on his person will be transmitted into the final piece of jewelry he creates. This is Steves own rite of creativity to understand his stone and to help it express what it wants to become. To best exhibit the turquoise, Arviso has become a master at refined, understated silverwork. Steve is quickly becoming famous for his particular take on old style Navajo jewelry. His ritual-like creation process, the high quality turquoise he uses, the specifically pre-1950s style that he embraces, and his own unique touch are what make Arviso‘s works so highly sought after. We are very proud to be carrying his work in our store. In January, 2021, Steve lost his son Cody Arviso. Cody was a talented jeweler himself and his hallmark was the bear claw. In rememberence of Cody, Steve is now adding the bear claw hallmark to all of his work.

6.5" Michael Schmaltz, Algonquin #8 turquoise cluster ingot silver cuff bracelet
6.5" Michael Schmaltz, Algonquin #8 turquoise cluster ingot silver cuff bracelet. Unworn, "new old stock" condition. Weight and measurements in pics. Amazing piece with untra high grade natural American turquoise from the #8 mine. The best of both worlds life as a silversmith and painter Michael Schmaltz loves painting women, all kinds of women, as they go about their daily activities. He photographs them in not your typical pose and what he gets is an image for a painting. However, his current work is a painting of his daughter when she was 10, sitting on the floor reading the “funny papers. A once passionate jewelry maker in his prime years, he is now embarking on living his lifelong dream of an artist, something that his parents heavily discouraged him in pursuing when he was a teen. He says that he always knew in his heart since he was five years old that he had artistic abilities. “I just had a knack for it, he said. “I was recognized at a real young age at being artistic. But, I was discouraged from pursing art by my parents, whod thought it would be a waste of time. Schmaltz talks about enlisting in the Army, putting his artistic dream on the back burner, and how he remembers while he was aboard a ship, he was so bored he did some oil paintings. But, that was short lived because once he was out of the Army, he made jewelry making his passion for 40 years, however, he says that he always wanted to paint. “I didnt have time to paint because all of my energy went into producing jewelry, he said. “It takes a lot of concentration and energy to paint. I couldnt do both until I got to the point where I dont need to make jewelry for a living anymore. Now, I paint and hardly make any jewelry. Born in Winslow, Ariz., Schmaltz has been residing in Gallup since he was four. He is a self-taught jewelry maker and artist. He remembers during the early 1970s, when jewelry making was popular but he could not find anyone who had the time to teach him how to make jewelry. So, he bought a propane torch, some silver and taught himself the craft.
