Antique Hand Painted Limoges Lamp w/Neoclassical Woman Playing Lyre. Really nice
lamp with no damage in working condition. It's been rewired but the brass base
is early 20th century. By the Shape of the porcelain vase I think it may have
always been a lamp but have no way of knowing for sure. I did once see a very
similar shape in an oil lamp bring close to $2000 at auction, so maybe it was
once an oil lamp. I can't find a mark but the quality is unmistakably Limoges
French porcelain from the late 19th to early 20th century. Measures 19.5" to top
of socket where bulb goes, 27" to the top of the loop (not shown) where the
shade will rest, and 14" to the bottom of the brass stem that goes up for the
socket.

1930's Yale Town Padlock From Mount Royal Hotel Baltimore MD with Room key and Tag. This is a cool set I'm certain it's been together since it's beginning. The lock works with the key inside it. This was likely Hotel property as. The Mount Royal Hotel and Apartments were designed in 1899 by the well-respected Baltimore architect, Edward H. Glidden. The Neo-Italian Renaissance style buildings were constructed in early 1900; the 103 East Mount Royal Avenue building served as an upscale hotel and the 101 East Mount Royal Avenue building contained all upscale apartments. Centered in the rich artistic and cultural life concentrated in the then city’s center, Mount Vernon, Baltimore, The Mount Royal Hotel and Apartments were a very desirable place to visit as a hotel guest, or to live in as a resident of the apartments. Once the Pennsylvania Train Station was completed in 1911, The Mount Royal’s appeal only increased, as the property’s location attracted daily commuters to and from Washington, DC. Even in 1911, the train ride from Penn Station to Union Station was just 40 minutes. b12

For his contribution to the arts, Lalaounis was made Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier de l'ordre des Arts et Lettres) by the French government and Commander of the Order of Academic Palms (Commandeur des Palmes Académiques). He was also elected as a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France, the only jeweler ever to be inducted.[3][7] The Academicians' swords (épées d'Académiciens), given to members on their induction, were originally designed by Salvador Dali, and when Dali became too frail to continue, he named his close friend Ilias Lalaounis to continue his work.In November 1987, Lalaounis was invited by Teddy Kollek, Mayor of Jerusalem, to present his collection Treasures of the Holy Land, in an exhibition specially organized by the Israel Museum and subsequently shown in New York, London and Paris. The following year he presented Arabesques, a collection of gold and silver creations set with precious and semi-precious stones. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey invited him to exhibit Arabesques, as well as another complementary collection, Soleiman the Magnificent, at the Islamic Art Museum of Istanbul.[8] He launched Ameridians in New York, a collection inspired by the art of North American Indians and in 1991, opened his store on Madison Avenue in New York, where he presented his collection inspired by Celtic art.Museum In 1994, he founded the Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum, located under the Acropolis, in the center of Athens. The permanent exhibition displays jewelry and micro-sculptures from forty-five collections, designed by Lalaounis in the period 1940-1992.[9] Some special commissions are also kept on permanent display, such as the Olympic torch, designed by Ilias Lalaounis, used to start the Olympic torch rally before every Olympic Games.

c1900 Michigan State University Morill Hall Wall Plaque Lead/Pewter Relief Bust
in Mission Oak Frame. I bought this piece a few years ago from a woman that told
me she purchased it from some sort of liquidation sale Michigan State
University. I'm still looking for the piece of paper where I had her write it
down but It might not turn up for years. I did find that Morill hall was
demolished in 2013 which was about 4 years before I bought this piece. I know
for a fact it was MSU and I know it was Morill Hall I just don't remember the
date she acquired it, not sure if I asked. It seems Morill hall was a women's
building in 1900. This piece is for sure that old. I would bet my life it's from
1900-1910. It's unsigned, I don't know who the artist or the woman is. I think
there's a good chance they're both someone famous. To me this looks to be a one
of a kind handmade piece and I don't think there could've been may artists at
that time or now capable of such a feat. It has minor wear as shown. It is very
heavy. It measures 16" wide x 20" tall. This piece represents quite a bit not
just for people interested in Michigan stuff but It's an important part of
Women's Educational History and the evolution of this country.

In December 2012, History said goodbye to Morrill Hall and moved to the Old
Horticulture Building.

Opened in 1900, Morrill Hall was first named the Women’s Building. Though women
were admitted to MSU in small numbers beginning in 1870, a women’s course was
not introduced until 1896. As the number of women rose, the university need a
dormitory—the Women’s Building. The Dean of women had a residence on the first
floor and home economics instructors lived on the upper floors. There was space
for 120 women students and a dining room, cooking and sewing laboratories, a
woodshop, music rooms, and a gym. According to a catalog from the day, women
residents were subject “to only such restraints as would be expected in a well
regulated Christian family.” By 1926, modifications allowed for the housing of
200 women in the building.

In the mid-1930s, increased enrollment in the Women’s course made necessary the
construction of new dormitories. As women students moved into new buildings,
Morrill Hall was converted in 1937 into classrooms and offices for the Liberal
Arts Division. That year the building was officially named Morrill Hall in honor
of Vermont Senator Justin Smith Morrill. He had been instrumental in forging the
federal Morrill Act, which established land-grant colleges. The act was critical
in the development of higher education in the United States.

As part of the Liberal Arts Division, History, along with six other departments,
established itself in Morrill in 1937. As the department grew, it came to occupy
all of the third and fourth floors and parts of the first floor and garden
level. English occupied the second floor and Religious Studies part of the
first.

About 100 years after its construction, Morrill’s age began to show. Inspections
revealed deterioration in the building’s wooden infrastructure and shallow
foundation. In 2010, the MSU Board of Regents decided that repairs were not
feasible and approved a plan for demolition.

Events then unfolded quickly. In summer 2012, English and Religious Studies were
moved from Morrill to Wells Hall. Romance

Old photo of Old Horticulture Building
Old Horticulture Building

Languages, which had been in Old Horticulture, was also moved to Wells. Crews
then did minor renovations on Old Hort. History was the last department to
vacate Morrill during a move which took several weeks.

Morrill Hall was demolished in summer 2013. In spring 2014, the Morrill plot was
transformed into a green space with benches and gardens arranged in manner so as
to emulate the long, wide halls that characterized the old structure.

Needless to say, the move to Old Hort was time consuming. Faculty packed their
own belongings, most of which consisted of books. Crate after crate was then
taken by university movers 100 yards across campus. Faculty then unpacked their
things and began the process of settling in.

Old Hort lacks some of the charm of Morrill. Gone are the high ceilings,
hardwood floors, large windows looking out at the green, and spacious offices.
But Old Hort has proven to have some advantages. The heating system works well,
there are no rats, bats or birds inside the building, and the offices, though
smaller, are comfortable and roomy enough for multiple bookcases.

MSU sponsored some updates of Old Hort. But there is still work to be done.
Alumni and friends of the department interested in sponsoring room updates and
in conference room, office and workspace naming rights are encouraged to contact
the department chair for conversations.

History has started a Morrill Fund to honor the old building and to advance
faculty research. For more information, please contact the department chair,
Walter Hawthorne.

*Some information for this piece was derived from History Professor Madison
Kuhn’s Michigan State The First One Hundred Years (East Lansing, Michigan State
University Press, 1955).

Austin Aqua Festival 1963,1964, 1957 Regatta Trophy. Selling all three with
provenance. These two Aqua fest Trophies will be the highlight of any Austin
Aqua Fest Collection. They are rare, one of a kind, the type of holy grail
collectibles that you don't even consider the existence of until you encounter
it. I'm including the 1957 trophy because it provides interesting provenance to
the two aqua fest trophies. They are all from the same estate and were won by
the Same man. I'm including a screenshot of his obituary. He was 40 when he won
the 1957 trophy, 46 for the '63, and 47 for the '64. Provenance is not something
usually considered with these types of collectibles, but it is interesting in
this case. I'm selling the lot for one price. If you're in Austin which the
future owner most likely will be, I've met locally to sell earlier skipper pins
and other rare Austin Memorabilia.

The Austin Aqua Festival was created in 1962 to promote Austin and the Texas
Highland Lakes as a top vacation area and to boost the local economy in what was
normally a slow period. The first Aqua Fest occurred Aug. 3-12, 1962. Art
Linkletter was the headliner for the event.

The festival offered many water related events such as a
150-mile canoe race, fishing contests, a sailingregatta and an illuminated night
time parade on the lake. There were many land based events also including the
Miss Austin Aqua Beauty contest, a twilight land parade, a
daytime military parade,
a rodeo, golf tournament, concerts, dances and fireworks.

Patrons of the fest could purchase a book of discount tickets to get into the
various venues. The tickets were called Skipper Script. The next year, the
script gave way to the Skipper Pin, which was purchased and pinned on the goers
clothing, letting the workers know that the wearer was eligible for discounts on
tickets.

The central location for many of the events was "Festival Beach," a small park
on Town Lake between the city-owned power plant and a residential neighborhood.
The city had originally created Town Lake as a cooling pond for the power plant.

In 1964, the festival added one of its most popular and controversial
events, drag boat racing on Town Lake. It also added a water
skiing championship, kite flying championship and an Austin Grand Prix - sports
car racing on city streets.

The 1966 Aqua Fest started out with the world premiere of Batman, with Adam
West and other actors from the movie in attendance. 1966 also saw the start of
the "Battle of the Bands", in which unknown rock and roll bands were judged for
awards and recognition. Battle of the Bands would become the festival's top
draw. The United States Air Force air demonstration squadron,
the Thunderbirds first performed at the Fest the same year.

By 1968, an estimated crowd of 150,000 watched the night lighted water parade,
which had been renamed to Rio Noche parade in 1964. The crowds were starting to
overwhelm Festival Beach causing traffic congestion, parking problems and
security concerns for the residents plus the noise of the events, especially the
drag boats. However, the mostly Hispanic community had very little political
clout to get anything changed.

Theme nightsEdit

Theme nights began in 1969. Various nights of the festival would highlight
different cultures of Texas. This first year there was
Western, German, Czech and Jazz and Rhythm and Blues nights. Throughout the
years the theme nights varied as new ones were tried and unpopular ones not
repeated. These included Mexican, Black Heritage, Italian, American and
International nights. Toward the end of the festival's life, the theme nights
had settled to multiple nights with Western and Mexican themes.

Aero-FestEdit

Also in 1969, Bergstrom Air Force Base, on the southeast edge of Austin, began
an open house in conjunction with Aqua Fest and titled it Aero-Fest. In addition
to the Thunderbirds performing, the gathering showed off many
military airplanes and other hardware. A crowd favorite was a C-5 Galaxy, which
visitors would walk through to get to the main display area. Aero-Fest was an
instant success and in just two years it was drawing 80,000 people to the base.
Aero-Fest ceased when the base closed in 1993.

1970–1979Edit

The new decade saw Aqua Fest's continued growth with the addition of more new
events such as a photography contest and motocross in 1971 and the Pet Parade in
1972. But the growth of the event brought confrontation with the neighborhoods
surrounding Festival Beach. Complaints had gone unheeded and people finally took
to the streets in protest. The anti-Fest coalition was led by Paul Hernandez and
a group calling itself the "Brown Berets." Protesters were arrested and they in
turn sued the City of Austin and Aqua Fest. By the end of the decade, the drag
boat races were gone from Town Lake and pressure was on to find a new location
to hold other Aqua Fest events.

1980–1989Edit

Due to continued protest and growing crowds, Aqua Fest was moved from Festival
Beach to Auditorium Shores, a larger park along Town Lake about a mile to the
west of Festival Beach. This larger area meant the festival could now have
multiple stages for entertainment. The festival organizers signed up corporate
sponsors and local radio stations to co-sponsor the entertainment and began
booking national acts.

The City of Austin, which had subsidized Aqua Fest in its early years, now
believed the Fest was self-sufficient and withdrew its financial support. The
city began charging the festival for use of Auditorium Shores.

In 1985, attendance at Aqua Fest peaked at 252,000. More criticism came at the
festival for lack of parking, excessive noise and alcohol abuse issues. This
time the rebuke was from residents of the Bouldin Creek neighborhood just south
of Auditorium Shores. The opponents of the festival were able to force a
non-binding referendum to move Aqua Fest to Lake Walter E. Long in far east
Austin. The measure passed but promised corporate support to build a new
facility went away as Texas entered an oil bust in the middle of the decade.
Aqua Fest stayed at Auditorium Shores.

1990–1998Edit

With its multiple stages for entertainment, Aqua Fest changed from a civic event
to a live music event. The organizers began to book bigger and bigger acts, even
paying premiums to get popular acts such as Dolly Parton in 1992. This drove
ticket prices up and attendance down. By 1993, the festival only drew 44,000
people and as a result lost $722,000. The festival organization exhausted its
cash reserves and asked its largest creditor, the City of Austin, for permission
to pay off its debt in annual installments.

In 1994, Aqua Fest returned to its roots with more local acts and an all
volunteer staff and in 1995 brought back the popular theme nights. They also
tried drag boat races again, this time at Lake Walter E. Long, but the races
drew little interest. It was all too little, too late and the Austin Aqua
Festival folded in 1998.

He was part of a young
group of makers which would forever change the
face of jewelry design. Kauppi's drive to innovate
originated from the difficult circumstances of the war and a desire to break out
of the
usual standards of jewelry design of that time.

The War and the Innovation of the Kupittaan Kulta Workshop

Finnish jewelry ingenuity was greatly tested during the
second world war and it was reported that even when
glass beads and stones were hard to obtain during the war
that the Kupittan Kulta workshop melted down colored pin
heads to provide jewelry accents and Finish granite was upgraded
to a precious stone. Below : L to Right: Kupitaan Kulta jewellery including
silver and amethyst flower pendant, the "Mountain Stream" necklace and
a modernist Kupittan Kulta brooch

International Acclaim
Kauppi, representing Finland, started exhibiting
internationally in the 1950's winning prestigious awards. His "Mountain Stream"
necklace which featured cascading bubbles of spectrolite and rock crystals
was an example of his original craftsmanship. The anvil benchmark beside the
Turku town stamp are identifying marks for this designer and his company.

Modernist Forms
Attention to simplicity and form was at the heart of Kauppi's jewelry designs
.Kauppi’s designs emphasized abstraction, and being a true modernist he
he rejected the previously popular naturalistic forms of the forties which
focused on
flower and leaf type designs. With great emphasis on craftsmanship
his strong and bold jewelry designs remain strikingly relevant to this day.
