1960's Tomasita Montoya(1899-1978) Dominguita Sisneros Naranjo (b. 1942)San Juan<br>Pottery Native American Bowl Mother/Daughter. 7" wide x 4" tall with no cracks,<br>chips, restorations, or significant wear.<br><br>Tomasita Montoya was one of the original 7 San Juan potters who revived the art<br>form in the 1930's. Her daughters Rosita de Herrera and Dominguita Herrera<br>learned to make pottery from her.<br><br>The Pueblo had a wonderful history of pottery making, but by about 1890 there<br>were no potters left. In 1930 Regina Cata organized a pottery study group at San<br>Juan Pueblo with the intent of revitalizing pottery production. The group<br>studied ancient potsherds of wares made at San Juan in earlier times and<br>selected Potsuwi‘i Incised Ware (1450-1500) as a basis for a contemporary<br>pottery type. By the late 1930s, further development resulted in deeply-carved<br>polychrome wares, and incised wares, both of which are still being produced<br>today.<br><br>Tomasita was especially known for her incised red ware jars, bowls, and vases.<br>The decoration on these vessels was primarily fine line geometric hatching. On<br>occasion she utilized micaceous clay, adding some texture and sparkle to the<br>geometric elements. Tomasita also made deeply carved polychrome pieces which<br>included designs of clouds, kiva steps, and plants.<br>tw229

Exremely rare to find a piece like this with the original label as in the late 20th century many would have removed this label and presented this as a mid 19th century piece. Personally I don't think it matters whether this is 1860 or 1900, it's the same piece and definitely a handmade antique that would cost much more than I'm asking for it to make today with all this hand painted work involved. I think it's really old, 19th to early 20th century.<br>Nice estate fresh ceremonial mask covered in hide with some wear as shown.<br>15"high, 10"wide, 12.5"deep, crack in forehead, a few of the horns are a little<br>loose.<br><br>The Bete and Gere people reside in Ivore' Coast, just south of the Guro. ,<br>omnipresent in Bete life, aims to maintain a harmonious relationship between<br>nature and the ancestors, who are responsible for the welfare of the tribe.<br>Elaborate masquerades and ceremonies are performed by the men of the tribe who<br>belong to dance societies.According to the book, THE TRIBAL ARTS OF AFRICA<br>byBacquart: "Bete carvers are renowned for one particular type of face mask<br>which has exaggerated features- a large protruding mouth,an elongated nose,with<br>nostrils sometimes extending to each side of the face, and globular eyes set<br>beneath a high domed forehead carved with a medium ridge. Historically, this<br>type of mask was worn to prepare men for war; nowadays,it is worn for a variety<br>of ceremonies, including entertainment dances." These masks were influenced by<br>the tradition of their western neighbors, the "We". The Bete grew only what was<br>needed for a subsistence economy and placed more importance on the hunt. To<br>render the hostile forces of the forest material, they sculpted a type of mask<br>that would provoke terror: the "gre", with its grimacing face, distorted<br>features facial protuberances, bulging forehead. The Bete live in the<br>southwestern part of the country, between the Akan ethnic groups to the east and<br>the Guro tribe to the north. They number about 600,000 and are an agricultural<br>group. Patrilinear, the Bete live – under the ancestors’ authority – in small<br>“headless” villages. Historically they were hunters, but nowadays they also<br>farm. They grow what is needed for a subsistence economy. They also have linked<br>to the market economy and much of their effort is devoted to the cultivation of<br>cacao and coffee. , omnipresent in Bete life, aims to maintain a harmonious<br>relationship between nature and the ancestors who are responsible for the<br>welfare of the tribe. In<br>1933, Black was taught by Rudolph Staffel to make wheel-thrown pottery and also<br>began to teach children's ceramic classes at the Witte. Black directed ceramic<br>installation in a San Antonio reconstruction project sponsored by the National<br>Youth Administration and the Works Progress Administration art program. In 1955<br>he retired from teaching and devoted his time to ceramics. Retired Jeep Collins Sterling and Brass Shadowbox angel Pendant2.25" wide x 2" tall no damage or detectable wear. In 1972 Jeep Collins, the son of Enid Collins Handbag designer started making jewelry from glass African trade beads that my sister gave me. She told me, "Why don't you put these together with brass wire and I will see if I can sell them in my store." I had just been discharged from the Marine Corps in July and was planning to go back to college in the fall. I needed to earn a little money while I waited to begin school so I took her up on the offer. By September she was selling all the jewelry I could make. I was so encouraged by the sales that I decided to put off college and make jewelry for awhile. Awhile turned into a lifetime career. In time I learned the art of lost wax casting and direct metal fabrication at the Southwest Craft Center in San Antonio. These new skills enabled me to turn sketches into pieces that reflect my interest; wildlife and nature. In 1974 after my redemption through Jesus Christ many of my designs reflected my new found faith. In the early years Dana and I traveled on weekends to arts and craft shows all over Texas to sell what I made during the week. Later we sold to resellers, and in the early 1990’s we opened our own stores in major Texas cities. This was an exciting time; we had over a hundred craftsmen making jewelry in our Fredericksburg workshop; our lives were at a fast pace. Today life is simple, the stores are all closed and we make jewelry in the old tin house on the ranch, very much like the log cabin of my mother’s where I started. We sell from our website and by phone. The downsizing has been a blessing for us. In addition to making jewelry, Dana and I are involved in several Christian ministries, taking care of grandchildren, raising cattle, and growing vegetables.

Unsigned but distinctive Elzac pin measures approx 1 7/8" x 2.75" inches. This unique 1940s ethnic mask brooch has a green ceramic face and stylized green lucite turban. It reflects the history of the time in that rhinestones and metals were scarce during WWII, so many jewelry designers became more creative with their use of plastics and other non-traditional materials. Elzac was one of the more innovative designers of the 1940s. Clasp holds well and works smoothly. Very good condition.

From) was born in 1908 and opened his first workshop in 1931 when he was still only twenty-three .Over the next forty years Niels Erik went on to become one one of the greats of Danish design, and created many works including floral-inspired designs often set with semi-precious gemstones. These pieces took inspiration from the Skønvirke style. This was a Scandinavian development that formed part of Denmark’s Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movement . c1900 Boxed German Dollhouse Miniature set Graniteware, Stoneware, Cutlery and more. Amazing set here probably somewhat assembled and larger than what actually came in the box originally as there are different scales, It's estate fresh and this is how I got it. The cutlery is amazing some styled after mid 19th century pieces and possibly older than the original set, I'm not sure but I do know that 95% of the things in here if not 100% are over 100 years old. The stoneware pot is great, does have a small chip on the back side, the Iron enamel muffin pan is really great, there is some damage to enamel as shown. Box measures 12.5" x 9.5". c1750's Battersea box Frog and Deer. Two English 18th century boxes one in the form of a frog, the other a deer. I can't be 100% sure it was made at the Battersea factory, it could be a Bilston box from 20-30 years later. It's 18th century and guaranteed so, both rare boxes. The frog is 1.5" tall x 1.5" wide with some crazing inside and out mainly on the base and bottom of the frog, one chip to the enamel shown in last two pics. The deer 2.25" wide x 1 3/8" tall crazing on top interior and inside and outside of bottom, , small restoration just below the figure on the base and on opposing side of interior. Selling both boxes, if you are interested in only one please have an offer in mind. Battersea boxes developed in the mid 18th century as tiny decorative containers covered with enamel or porcelain and decorated with pleasing designs. Originally the boxes were made of copper covered with white enamel, decorated with classical or scenes or portraits. They evolved over time to become more sentimental. The Battersea box got its name from a firm under the tutelage of Sir Stephen Theodore Janssen, Once Lord Mayor of London at York House in Battersea. The boxes were decorated by transfer printing, which took an impression from an engraved plate painted with enamel and printed on to the box which was then hand painted and fired. The firm existed only from 1753 to 1756 however other firms producing similar boxes, especially those in the village of Bilston, took up this technique. Battersea became the collective name for all such boxes. With advancements in the pottery industry due to the Industrial Revolution, Battersea boxes gradually fell from favour. Allowing small boxes to be produced at less cost than the enameled competitors made Battersea boxes decline significantly by the mid 19th century. They became popular again in the second half of the 20th century with the development of commemorative boxes produced for such well known firms as Tiffany & Co. tw239

c1900 Bahr and Proschild 247 Dep Agnes Lucas Puppenmutterchen's Nahschule "The Doll Mother's sewing room". Selling everything shown, looks to have been played with very little. I think there may be a few extras that were added by the previous owner and I'm sure not everything that came in it over 100 years ago is here but it's great with little wear to the box. The doll is marked 247 Dep, eyes open and close Box is 12 3/8" x 9 3/8" Doll is 11.5" in great condition doesn't look to have been played with. I think most of the patterns from the doll pattern book have been used and are presumably in the case. There's a tiny book that looks to be a replica of the larger book, possibly more recent. TW239

Red Adair, (1915-2004) Texas Oil Well Firefighter belt buckle. 3 3/8" x 2.25", takes up to a 1.75" belt. Paul Neal Adair was born in Houston, Texas in nineteen fifteen. He was one of five sons of a metal worker. He also had three sisters. While growing up, he became known as Red Adair because his hair was bright red. The color became a trademark for Adair. He wore red clothes and red boots. He drove a red car, and his crew members used red trucks and red equipment. As a young man, Red Adair dropped out of high school to help support his family. He worked as a laborer for several different companies. In nineteen thirty-eight, Adair got his first oil-related job with the Otis Pressure Control Company. During World War Two, Adair served on a trained army team that removed and destroyed s. After the war, he returned to Houston and took a job with Myron Kinley. At the time, Kinley was the leader in putting out fires in oil wells. Red Adair worked with Myron Kinley for fourteen years. But in nineteen fifty-nine, Adair started his own company. During his thirty-six years in business, Red Adair and his crews battled more than two thousand fires all over the world. Some were on land. Others were on ocean oil-drilling structures. Some fires were in burning oil wells. Others were in natural gas wells. Red Adair was a leader in a specialized and extremely dangerous profession. Putting out oil well fires can be difficult. This is because oil well fires are extinguished, or put out, at the wellhead just above ground. Normally, s are used to stop the fire from burning. The explosion robs the fire of oxygen. But, once the fire is out, the well still needs to be covered, or capped, to stop the flow of oil. This is the most dangerous part of the process. Any new heat or fire could cause the leaking well and the surrounding area to explode. Red Adair developed modern methods to extinguish and cover burning oil wells. They became known in the industry as Wild Well Control techniques. In addition to s, the techniques involved large amounts of water and dirt. Adair also developed special equipment made of bronze metal to help extinguish oil well fires. The modern tools and his Wild Well Control techniques earned Red Adair and his crews the honor of being called the "best in the business." Red Adair was known for not being afraid. He was also known for his sense of calm and safety. None of his workers were ever killed while putting out oil well or gas fires. He described his work this way: "It scares you -- all the noise, the rattling, the shaking. But the look on everyone's face, when you are finished and packing, it is the best smile in the world; and there is nobody hurt, and the well is under control." One of Red Adair's most important projects was in nineteen sixty-two. He and his crew put out a natural gas fire in the Sahara Desert in Algeria. The fire had been burning for six months. This famous fire was called the "Devil's Cigarette Lighter." Fire from the natural gas well shot about one hundred forty meters into the air. The fire was so big that American astronaut John Glenn could see it from space as he orbited Earth. The desert sand around the well had melted into glass from the extreme heat. News reports said Adair used about three hundred forty kilograms of nitroglycerine material to pull the oxygen out of the fire. Adair's success with the "Devil's Cigarette Lighter" and earlier well fires captured the imagination of the American film industry. In nineteen sixty-eight, Hollywood made an action film called "Hellfighters." It was loosely based on events in Red Adair's life. Actor John Wayne played an oil well firefighter from Houston, Texas whose life was similar to Adair's. Adair served as an advisor to Wayne while the film was being made. The two men became close friends. Adair said one of the best honors in the world was to have John Wayne play him in a movie. Here is John Wayne in the film "Hellfighters." He has just flown into Venezuela to help his crew fight a dangerous fire. He has brought needed supplies with him. In nineteen eighty-eight, Adair fought what was possibly the world's worst off-shore accident. It was at the Piper Alpha drilling structure in the North Sea. Occidental Petroleum operated the structure off the coast of Scotland. The structure produced oil and gas from twenty-four wells. One hundred sixty-seven men were killed when the structure exploded after a gas leak. Red Adair had to stop the fires and cap the wells. He faced winds blowing more than one hundred twenty kilometers an hour, and ocean waves at least twenty meters high. In March of nineteen ninety-one, Red Adair went to Kuwait following the Persian Gulf War. He and his crews were called in to help put out fires set by the Iraqi army as it fled from coalition forces. But Adair faced serious problems in putting out the fires. In June, he flew to Washington, D.C. to talk to government officials about those problems. He told congressional lawmakers that he needed more water and more equipment. He also described his concerns about medical services for his men, and the buried landmines throughout Kuwait. Adair also met with then-President George H.W. Bush. President Bush listened to his concerns and offered his support. Within weeks, Adair had the equipment he needed to complete the job. The Red Adair Company capped more than one hundred wells. His crews were among twenty-seven teams from sixteen countries called in to fight the fires. The crews' efforts put out about seven hundred Kuwaiti fires. Their efforts saved millions of barrels of oil. Some experts say the operation also helped prevent an environmental tragedy. The job had been expected to take three to five years. However, it was completed in just eight months. In a ceremony, the Emir of Kuwait extinguished the last burning well on November sixth, nineteen ninety-one. In addition to Kuwait, Adair and his men carried out sixteen other jobs that year. They worked in India, Venezuela, Nigeria, the Gulf of Mexico and the United States. Red Adair had spent his seventy-sixth birthday in Kuwait working side by side with his crew. When asked when he might retire, he told reporters: "Retire? I do not know what that word means. As long as a man is able to work, and he is productive out there and he feels good – keep at it." Still, Red Adair finally did retire in nineteen ninety-four. At that time, he joked about where he would end up when he died. He said he hoped to be in Heaven. But he said this about Hell: "I have made a deal with the devil. He said he is going to give me an air-conditioned place when I go down there – if I go there – so I won't put all the fires out." Red Adair died in two thousand four. He was eighty-nine years old. At his funeral, many family members and friends honored him by wearing red clothes. Many Americans remember Red Adair for his bravery. He lived his life on the edge of danger. He was known for his willingness to risk his own life to save others. During his life, Adair received Special Letters of Recognition from Presidents Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush. One of the letters said this: "You have served your country well by your willingness to do a dangerous and important job with a rare ability. In an age said to be without heroes, you are an authentic hero." anderas

Antique Chinese Ink cake set. 12" x 8.25" box. Remarkable set of eight ink cakes<br>inset in original fitted box. Ink cakes decorated with mythical creatures,<br>themes from nature, auspicious symbols and calligraphic inscriptions and often<br>embellished with colors and gilding. c1880 English Majolica Covered Birds on Nest Game Dish. 8.5" x 6.5" x 6" tall. Very good condition with no restorations, one tight hairline on base that doesn't go through to exterior shown in top center of last pic about 1" long. Some very small chips on open eggs. This is an extremely rare piece of Majolica 130-150 years old with very little wear for it's age. The only other one of these I've ever seen for sale was heavily restored(Missing one egg and other eggs restored) and $1200. In different periods of time and in different countries the word majolica has been used for two distinct types of pottery. Firstly, from mid-15th century onwards there was maiolica, a type of pottery reaching Italy from Spain, Majorca[1] and beyond. This was made by a tin-glaze process (dip, dry, paint, fire), resulting in an opaque white glazed surface decorated with brush-painting in metal oxide enamel colour(s). During the 17th century, the English added the letter j to their alphabet.[2] Maiolica was commonly anglicized to majolica thereafter. Secondly, there is the Victorian mid to late 19th century type of pottery also known as majolica made by a more simple process (paint, fire) whereby coloured lead glazes were applied direct to an unfired clay mould, typically relief-moulded, resulting in brightly coloured, hard-wearing, inexpensive wares both useful and decorative, typically in naturalistic style. This type of majolica was introduced to the public at the 1851 Great Exhibition in London, later widely copied and mass-produced. Minton & Co., who developed the coloured lead glazes product, also developed and exhibited at the 1851 Exhibition a tin-glazed product in imitation of Italian maiolica which they called also majolica. tw237
