6.25" Ray Scott Navajo Silver modernist cuff bracelet, no issues.Ray Scott is an accomplished Native American Navajo silversmith. His art is his own. It is innovative and original... it explores our senses. His jewelry is often a journey into the 3rd dimension... depth. It is twisted, layered, textured and colored all to produce feelings of movement. Ray's jewelry is art. Lyrical, musical in a way that stirs your emotions. Beautiful compositions in turquoise and silver. It should also be noted that Ray's choice of gemstones never fails to add to the piece. Nothing in Ray Scott jewelry happens by accident. His jewelry is always well thought out with the express purpose of moving his designs forward. "I take great pride in my work", Ray says and he means every word. Ray (Raynard) Scott jewelry is made entirely by him. Nothing is bought from jewelry supply stores... nor do any other silversmiths participate in its making. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. A Native American jewelry piece referred to as "silver" or "ingot" is guaranteed to be at least 90% silver. I rarely use the word "sterling" when referring to older Native American silver or really any older silver jewelry as silver contents vary and "sterling" is 92.5% silver. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn't an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I've seen thousands of pieces xrf'd to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women's wrist.

6.25" Ray Tracey Knifewing Navajo Sterling Turquoise, coral, and lapis cuff brac

    1 in stock

Ray Tracey Knifewing Navajo Sterling Turquoise, coral, and lapis cuff bracelet
13mm wide with no issues.

Artist Ray Tracey has had a life-long love of jewelry. As a child growing up in
Sawmill, AZ, Asa Tracey, his Grandfather, influenced him with his stories of
working the goat bellows for his uncle. Asa would pump the goat bellows all day
long to fuel the fire in the forge that would melt silver in a small cast iron
crucible. This process was very labor intensive and his grandfather hated it.
The molten silver would then be poured into a tufa stone mold to form an ingot.
The jeweler would then execute his craft and a new piece of jewelry would be
created.

“I wanted to see finished jewelry and wanted to learn everything I could.
Whenever we would go to Gallup, NM, I would visit curio stores to see creations
in silver.” Ray spent time viewing jewelry designs at the Gallup Intertribal
Indian Ceremonial and at the Navajo Nation Fair. Anywhere, there was jewelry on
display; Ray could be seen viewing the works of art.

Ray’s family moved to Ganado, AZ when he was six years old. One summer day when
he was nine years old, he complained to his mother of how bored he was. The next
day his mother enrolled him into summer school and changed his life forever. He
went straight to art class and found a silver smithing table in the corner. He
remembered his grandfather’s stories and the rest is history.

“In class I fabricated my first ring out of silver for my Mother. I found an
unknown stone and made a cabochon. I tried to copy an old style ring design that
I had seen at Hubbells Trading Post. One teardrop flanked the sides of the
stone. It was a very simple design but it took me a week to finish. I kept
melting the silver. I made my next silver and stone creation at the age of 21
and gave it to my mother. It was another ring, but this time it was a split
shank with three ribs and three tear drops on the side of the stone.” I told my
father, I want to make jewelry for the rest of my life.”

Ray continued making jewelry while attending Brigham Young University. Studying
chemistry and physics by day and making jewelry at night. “The designs were
simple, my first love was Old Style Navajo jewelry. Weekends were spent
traveling to Gallup, NM, to sell his work. While at BYU another opportunity
arose to express his creativity—acting. “I wasn’t a very good student so
Hollywood had an instant appeal. My gift of creativity carried over into acting.
Acting was just another outlet of creative expression.” His adventurous nature
allowed Ray to spend several years as an actor in feature films and television.
This acting detour never made him lose interest in jewelry design. Eventually,
Ray’s love of jewelry brought him back to New Mexico to permanently pursue this
art form.

“One time while traveling to Albuquerque from Gallup, I noticed the horizon over
Laa Pueblo. I saw steps on a mesa. I incorporated this imagery of tiered steps
into a bracelet design.”

“Another time, while golfing at Hobble Creek Golf Course, I saw pebbles aligned
in a row on the river bottom. Those pebbles became my inspiration to place them
on the sides of an inlaid bracelet.”

“Sometimes my creativity comes to a screeching halt. When this happens I go to
my roots; Old Style jewelry. That is the place of fascination. The Old Ones
utilized rudimentary tools to create their simple, yet perfected, pieces of
craftsmanship. From this point I am able to create from an inspiring idea. On
the flip side, sometimes my mind becomes flooded with more designs than I can
remember. Ideas come so quickly I can’t draw them fast enough.”

“When I see someone wearing one of my designs, it takes me back to the time when
the piece was created. Sometimes I can recall what I was eating or even the
music I was listening to. I will remember the inspiration that helped create
that design.”

Ray has found his path or gift of self-expression that has blessed, enlightened,
and influenced his life and others. Awareness of this special gift, fuels his
energy and creativity. Inspiration helps to translate his creativity into
artistic-visual expression. His creations stand as transitional figures from
traditional to contemporary. He creates something good as he is drawn toward
untouched fields of yet-to-be-discovered imagery. Unknowingly he is creating a
legacy from which generations can learn and grow. Ray has learned to appreciate
and embrace the journey of life and its gifts.

All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin)
silver and possibly higher content. 6.25" Ric Charlie Navajo sterling tufa cast cuff bracelet with spiderweb turquoise.Ric Charlie is an accomplished, self-taught Navajo goldsmith who has gained international acclaim for his tufa-cast jewelry. The texture and fine lines he achieves by carving in tufa stone, combined with colorful patinas and semiprecious stones, define Ric Charlie’s work. For nearly three decades, Ric has been drawing upon traditional Navajo techniques while pushing the boundaries to stay on the cutting edge of jewelry design.Charlie's love of color draws him away from the turquoise commonly found in Southwestern jewelry. He instead favors the gold, rust, red, purple, blue, and green patinas he achieves by adding liver of sulfur to the silver. The fine lines in his jewelry are accomplished by cutting tufa stones (compressed volcanic rock) with dental tools.Ric learned basic jewelry-making techniques in 1973 when he was in high school. He studied jewelry-making and design in college at Arizona State University and University of Arizona, and went on to teach himself tufa casting after being inspired by the work of Preston Monongye and Charles Loloma.“Sandcasting is a pretty difficult medium,” Ric Charlie says. “But for me it’s second nature. Everything I do is cast, and 99 percent of them are one-of-a-kind.”In 1983, Ric helped to design and construct the staff and medallion used by the president of Arizona State University.Today, Ric Charlie teaches and advises Native artists in his unique tufa-casting methods, while still producing top-of-the-line work for galleries and collectors around the world. Richard Tsosie Navajo Silver cuff bracelet with high grade turquoise and pearl.

Richard is perhaps best known for his distinctive textured silver designs. His trademark techniqie of granulation was discovered by accident when he noticed silver filings were fusing onto a ring he was soldering. He calls the process which produces this granulated surface texture “reticulation,” and he has been perfecting the technique throughout his career.

Born in 1956, Richard has been a jeweler since the mid 1970s. He learned jewelry making from his brother Boyd and from Kenneth Begay at Navajo Community College in Arizona. He quickly progressed from basic tasks of cutting and polishing stones to the more complex process of inlay.

Richard’s contemporary silver and hold work features the use of fabrication, overlay, and granulation. He is also known for colorful inlay work with a variety of natural stones and for his fine degree of control and attention to detail. His designs are motivated by images of the natural world, particularly the Wide Ruins area of the reservation where he spent a large part of his youth. Richard says of his work, “I am inspired by the colors of the mountains at sunset, the patterns of shadow and light that emerge at dawn, and the pinpoints of starlight against the black night sky.”

His pieces typically contain the symbol for lighting and an arrow pattern. The lightning stands for natural causes, while the arrowhead symbolizes man-made elements. Richard says the design represents the ups and downs of life. “Some things we can’t do anything about and you should try to enjoy life to the fullest.”

6.25" UITA6 1930's Navajo ingot silver and turquoise cuff bracelet

    1 in stock

6.25" UITA6 1930's Navajo ingot silver and turquoise cuff bracelet. Weight and measurements in pics. Beginning in 1931, The United Indian Trader’s Association (UITA), a volunteer organization of leading Southwestern Indian traders, created and enforced a strict set of quality standards for the making and selling of Navajo and Pueblo jewelry in the trading posts of its various members. UITA’s distinctive hallmark of its initials UITA with an arrowhead in the middle followed by the numeric designation of the particular trading company it was made at or for was a guarantee of the highest quality Native jewelry; completely handmade using solely traditional methods of craftsmanship and use of only the finest, traditional materials. Since the UITA traders were the most important “Who’s-who” of their day they were well-equipped to set and enforce such high standards and as a result, the finest jewelry pieces made under UITA’s auspices are some of the very finest Navajo and Pueblo pieces of the 20th Century. "The United Indian Traders Association (UITA) was established on September 13, 1931 for the expressed purpose of authentication of Indian crafts. At the time, the UITA was an important player both in Indian cultural life and in advocating for the sale of authentic Indian arts and crafts." Not only is this bracelet a classic, but the trading post it was made for and sold at is a classic too: “UITA 6” was the numeric designation assigned to the historic and extremely remote Borrego Pass Trading Post, set in the high pinon-juniper studded hills about 50 miles south of Chaco Canyon in Northwestern New Mexico. The post first opened in 1927 and was named after the nearby Borrego Pass, an ancient water gap across the Continental Divide where Navajos used to drive their sheep. Borrego Pass Trading Post was operated by several highly influential prominent Indian traders over the next fifty-plus years, including Ben and Anna Harvey, Bill and Jean Cousins and Don and Fern Smouse. The Navajo know Borrego Pass in the Navajo language as “Tiish Bito” (Snake Spring) or “Dibe Yazhi Habitiin” meaning "Upward Path of the Lamb." It’s hard to believe that such an elegant, refined and sophisticated looking piece was made essentially in the middle of nowhere in such an isolated and desolate region. Borrego Pass is tough to get to and when you get there, there is really no there there, just the run down old shell of what was once an important regional trading post. Our last trip out there was in 1996 or 1997 and the old post was barely hanging on, open just a few hours a day. It closed a year or two later, the end of an era. This bracelet is a completely classic and historic piece of traditional, Navajo silversmithing made in a classic and historic way in a classic and historic place; a unique combination that’s pretty hard to beat. As we said a moment ago, it’s quite remarkable that such a classic-looking International quality precious artwork could have been made in such a remote and isolated place under such primitive conditions but the Navajo are historically noamdic people who relish their splendid isolation, rugged lifestyle and magnificent wide open spaces. The proof of this bracelet's beauty is in the pudding and this particular pudding is a most delicious dish indeed. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry
referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. 6.25" Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) Santo Domingo silver cuff bracelet. From Santo Domingo Pueblo, Vidal Aragon (1923-2015) translated pueblo life into intricate storyteller jewelry. He became internationally renown for his inventive silver and gold overlay designs. His representations of the elements of nature, animals and pueblo life are symbolic of the Indian way. One symbol refers to “everlasting happiness.” Other common motifs are animals and the tracks they make and the blessing and nourishment of corn. An expert craftsman, Aragon drew each story strip with his saw blade and soldered it to a textured oxidized underlayer to illuminate the images. He often incorporated a trademark gold disk to represent the sun or moon.Vidal Aragon learned the overlay technique in the 1930s when he was a student at the Santa Fe Indian School. Before inventing the storyteller jewelry, he experimented with tufa casting and other metalworking techniques. He briefly lived in Scottsdale where he honed his skills as a shop smith. He has fond memories of the time he spent learning ballet as a young man in Phoenix. By the early 1940s, Vidal was already being recognized alongside such prominent smiths as Ambrose Roanhorse and Tom Burnsides for his innovative yet classical designs. Aragon found his true calling though when he began to translate his rich sense of the pueblo way of life into wearable stories, often full of his unique humor. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed. No older jewelry is going to be exactly 92.5% silver, some a little over, some a little under. It wasn‘t an exact thing with handmade jewelry. I‘ve seen thousands of pieces xrf‘d to prove this. Bracelets are photographed on a 6" women‘s wrist.
