Selling the matches shown with penny shown for scale. The Kaiserhof Hotel was on the corner of 17th and Welton Streets. Originally built as the one story Hotel Albert sometime before 1890, the building was extensively remodeled and enlarged in 1909. A fire threatened the building during remodeling as a result of labor strife in Denver. The name was changed in 1909 to the Kaiserhof Hotel, reflecting both its owner’s German heritage and evoking the name of a more famous hotel in Berlin. The name was changed in 1917 during WWI to Kenmark to avoid associations with the Kaiser. It also became the army recruiting station at that point. The hotel was listed in newspaper accounts among the nicer and more successful hotels of Denver, and hosted many large and prestigious events during the 1920s.B70

c1910 Japanese Brass/Bronze Ikebana Planter/Vase. Nice piece from the first quarter of the 20th century. Top is 12 5/8" wide 10" total height. Appears to have a little silver inlay in the lightweight bronze pot. A few small dents. It is patinated but lighter than other bronze examples I've had so I feel maybe it's brass.

c1910 Japanese Bronze Ikebana Planter 3 Piece Versatile. This piece is really amazing. It can be put together so many different ways allowing for it to be used in different locations at different heights, then a few pieces can be used alone and the other piece used for something else. I know it was engineered this way even though the 100 year old instructions are long gone. Each way I put it together it fit snugly as if that was it's original intention.. It's wonderful, super heavy solid bronze with top notch casting. When the three pieces are assembled as in the first pic it is 12" tall, the top tray is 11.5" wide, the center round planter with the spikes in it is 3.5" wide inside. There are no scratches or significant blemishes, dents, bends, etc. It's right around 100 years old from the first quarter of the 20th century. B45

c1910 D'Argental French Scenic Cameo Glass Vase with Shepherd Scene 11.75" x
5.5". Incredible complex labor intensive piece of over 100 year old hand
engraved art nouveau French cameo glass with no issues or damage whatsoever.St
Louis had been and still is one of the great old glass houses of France; they
had gone to the Paris exhibition in 1900 expecting to be crowned king of glass,
only to be completely out-classed by the cameo glass of the ‘upstart’ Emile
Galle. In the early 1920s they were still trying to get their own back. Paul
Nicolas cut a deal with St Louis –he would make cameo glass for them using their
facilities and then also he could use their facilities to make cameo glass for
himself too. This was before the days of ‘studio art glass’ if you had a glass
kiln you were a major sized business, not a one-man-band. The pieces Nicolas
made for St Louis were signed a number of ways, but quite soon they settled on
‘D’Argental’ (the brand name they had established for their own previous,
unsuccessful attempts at Cameo glass). Nicolas sneakily added a cross of
Lorraine to the mark to indicate when he personally made a piece. When he made
Cameo for himself pieces were signed ‘P. Nicolas’ usually followed by
‘Nancy’.Production at St Louis clearly had its limitations, the crystal glass
they used, had a more limited colour palate than he was used to at Galle and the
extra toughness of the crystal glass meant internal polishing was effectively
impossible. But using crystal did mean the cameo and wheel cutting could be much
finer.B61

c1911 William Comyns British sterling silver potpourri box reticulated jewelry. Weight and measurements in pictures, a zillion times nicer than the pictures suggest. Amazing work of art with no damage or significant wear. Lightweight cloth liner. William Comyns & Sons was one of the most notable London silversmithing firms of the Victorian and Edwardian periods, renowned for its exceptional decorative silverwork. William Comyns founded the company in 1858, following his apprenticeship with George J. Richards. He initially operated from the former premises of silversmith Robert Tagg at 2 Carlisle Street, Soho, London, where he registered his first makers mark (W.C in a four-tipped oval) in 1859. The firm quickly gained recognition for its finely crafted silverware, particularly elaborate dressing table sets, vanity boxes, and pictorial repoussé work. As demand grew, Comyns expanded operations, acquiring additional premises on Beak Street and Regent Street. In 1885, his sons, Charles and Richard, joined the business, leading to its renaming as William Comyns & Sons. Comyns silverware was retailed by some of the worlds most prestigious firms, including Tiffany & Co., The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company, and leading London retailers such as Henry Lewis and Howell & James. Among its most distinctive creations were silver and tortoiseshell pieces featuring delicate piqué work, a technique of inlaying fine silver patterns into tortoiseshell. These, along with jewellery boxes, toiletry sets, clocks, and other objets dart, were crafted in ornate Victorian and flowing Art Nouveau styles, highly prized for their intricate designs and exceptional quality. Following William Comyns death in 1916, his sons navigated the challenges of World War I. After Charles passed away in 1925, the firm became a limited liability company under Richard Comyns. The firm survived through the interwar years and continued producing high-quality silverware. In 1953, Bernard Copping acquired the company, but it changed hands multiple times in the following decades. William Comyns & Sons eventually ceased trading and was formally liquidated in 1987. Despite its closure, Comyns silverware remains highly collectible, admired for its refined craftsmanship and historical significance in British silversmithing.

c1915 22" Bronze Sculpture of Salome with John the Baptist's Head by Philipp
Modrow

A rare work from a rather obscure sculptor, this example captures the famous
Biblical scene of Salome with John the Baptist's head. Herod's second wife,
Herodias, originally the wife of his brother Philip, had her daughter Salome
dance before Herod and his entire court in hopes of manipulating him against
John the Baptist. John was outspoken in his reproach of Herod for taking his
brother's wife and Herodias wanted him executed for this, though Herod would not
comply. However, greatly pleased by her dancing and drunk with his guests, Herod
promised to give Salome anything she asked for, up to half of his kingdom.
Salome asked to have the head of John the Baptist on a plate, as he was
presently held in the king's prisons. Placed in an awkward position in front of
his court, he was forced to grant her request despite his own personal
objections. The scene is moving in it's exceptional rendering of Salome's
careless and selfish nature. She clutches her prize with a certain grotesque
pleasure, an unsettling image of one so led astray for the vengeance of her
mother to an empty and ugly result. Modrow has sculpted her ingeniously to be
equal parts beautiful and repulsive. She stands before a naturalistic rock
backdrop. The sculpture is signed on the right and impressed by the foundry on
the left. Philipp Modrow (German, 1882-1925) is documented in the E. Benezit
Dictionary of Artists (Gründ, Vol. IX, p. 1080) as being the student of Emil
Cauer Jr. and that he is noted for his 1923 sculpture "Monument to Spengler" in
Davos, where he died in December of 1925.

c1920 Argy Rousseau Pate De Verre Bowl in the Ivy Pattern signed G.Argy Rousseau. 3.5" tall x 4.5" wide at the rim with no cracks, chips, or restorations. Gabriel Argy-Rousseau is produced wonderful works of pate de verre art glass from about 1914 until 1937. Somewhere between 200 and 300 different designs have been recorded by researchers. Scholars believe that between 15,000 and 20,000 total pieces of art glass were produced by G. Argy-Rousseau. That is a relatively small production and it has made some pieces of his work very rare today. Please do not make the assumption that Argy-Rousseau was just a studio glass maker. He was the main creative force behind the glass, but it was in fact a large production. There were at times as many as 20 employees. G. Argy-Rousseau glass was sold all over Europe, in The United States, Latin America, and even in North Africa. It is partly because of this extensive original sales network that his glass can be found all over the world today. The importance of Argy-Rousseau was two-fold. First, it was completely unlike anything glass makers were producing at the time. And secondly, while others started trying the same styles, no one else was ever really able to make anything consistently more appealing or better. So not only was Argy-Rousseau the first, he was also the best. That is a feat that is rarely accomplished in the arts. Below is a brief timeline of Gabriel Argy-Rousseau and his life accomplishments: 1885 – Born in Meslay-le-Vidame, France 1902 – Attends Ecole de Serves 1906 – Graduates from Ecole de Sevres with an engineering degree 1913 – Marries Marianne Argyriades 1914 – Opens his first studio and displayed his original art glass 1921 – Forms firm with Gustav Moser-Millot to market Argy-Rousseau’s art glass 1923 – Generally considered to be the peak of his work 1931 – Moser-Millot liquidates firm marketing Argy-Rousseau works 1932 – Argy-Rousseau starts a new glass making venture 1937 – Closes the mostly unsuccessful new glass operation 1953 – Argy-Rousseau passes away tw191

THE JUDD COMPANY WALLINGFORD, CN 1830 - 1954 The Judd ancestry can be traced back to Deacon Thomas Judd who came from England and settled in Cambridge, MA in 1633/4. Deacon Morton Judd, born in 1808, learned his trade in a brass foundry and then, established his own business in 1830. In 1833, Morton's brother, Oliver S., joined the company as partner and the name was changed to M & O.S. Judd. In 1853, Morton's eldest son, Albert, replaced Oliver S. as the business partner. And, the company's name was changed to M. Judd & Sons. In 1863, Albert purchased the business and sold it back to his uncle, Oliver S. In 1865, Morton and Albert formed their own company to manufacture "Builder's Hardware" in New Haven, CN. In 1870, the business evolved to the Judd Manufacturing Company when Edward, Oliver S.'s brother, became President. In 1877, Morton and his three sons, Albert, Hubert L. & Edward, erected a plant in Wallingford, CN where they began a busness to manufacture Stationers' and Druggists' hardware. It was during this time that the company became well known for their still and mechanical banks. (The first mechanical bank had been introduced in 1869. This bank was known as "Hall's Excelsior" made by J.& E. Stevens.) Judd banks were usually finished in a brown or maroon lacquer and were washed in a green coloring. Not until the early 1910's, did the company start making "Cast Iron " decorative products, such as, Doorstops, Bookends, Doorknockers, Inkwells. The Judd Company was sold to the Stanley Works Company in1954. isshelf

c1920 Royal Order of Jesters Sterling Silver Enamel Pendant 1.25" wide without bail 12.8 grams, marked sterling on rim. No damage to enamel. About Royal Order Of Jesters Founded in 1911, the Royal Order of Jesters functions in connection with Freemasonry and the Shriners. The organization exists for the encouragement of laughter and fun in leisure time, as evidenced by the motto “Mirth is King.” The Royal Order of Jesters draws its name from the licensed court fools in medieval times known as jesters, who not only amused the patrons whom they served, but also assisted in intellectual and cultural development. When the founding members gathered in Hawaii on February 20, 1911, they chose the name of the Royal Order of Jesters to build upon this history and to set the tone for the organization. Led by Noble A.M. Ellison, the original members, known as a cast, consisted of 13 Shriners headed to Aloha Temple on a pilgrimage. The meeting took place in the Captain's Office aboard the S.S. Wilhelmina after a Testimonial Banquet hosted by the ship's captain and officers. Later, at another meeting in 1917, the organization received its current framework, which consists of the Royal Director and 13 other titles that include the Royal Heavy Man, the Royal Serio Comic, the Royal Tragedian, the Royal Impresario, the Royal Light Comedian, the Royal Leading Lady, the Royal Soubrette, the Royal Property Man, and the Royal Constable. All members, referred to as Jesters, join the organization only upon invitation, presuming good-standing membership in the Shriners. In addition to the brotherhood aspects of the organization, the International Royal Order of Jesters maintains a museum in Indiana where it showcases historical articles. These range from items associated with the history of the order itself to pieces related to the work of humorists from the past, including William Shakespeare.
