He began actively working at silversmithing around 1968. In 1969, a year after he began smithing, he on a 1st Award at the Navajo Tribal Fair in Arizona. Roan was included in the 2002 exhibit “Jewels of the Southwest” at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Santa Fe. His work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, and the Yellowhorse Museum in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Anderson Koinva is an accomplished silversmith from the Second Mesa village of Shongopovi. He started drawing and carving kachina dolls at a young age, which started his interest in making Kachina Ornaments in 1985, which are collected around the world. He learned silversmithing from his father-in-law, Bernard Dawahoya and uses a very similar style in his jewelry - bold, clean, and crisp.

H. Fred Skaggs southwestern modernist sterling silver clip-on earrings. Great earrings with no damage or significant wear. Fantastic design and execution, strong springs on clips. Weight and measurements in the pictures. H. Fred Skaggs was a prominent metalsmith who worked in the American Southwest beginning in the mid-1950s. He is also known for inspiring and training other artisans with his knowledge of silversmithing. Some of his pieces display traditional Southwestern designs and elements, while others are purely Modernist in nature. H. Fred Skaggs began his jewelry-making career in 1956. He was part of the community of artists who set up shop in the Lloyd Kiva Craft Center in Scottsdale, Arizona. Kiva‘s vision offered them a place to learn from one another as artisans while plying their respective crafts. Several Native American silversmiths, notably Hopi artisan Charles Loloma, were influenced by Skaggs‘ work. A potter by trade, Loloma was encouraged by and apprenticed to Skaggs, who taught him the art of silversmithing. While most of his jewelry was crafted of silver, Skaggs did work in karat gold occasionally. Given the style of the gold pieces collectors run across, they were likely commissioned by his clientele. Many of his silver jewelry designs were embellished with semi-precious gemstones. Skaggs was active as a jewelry craftsman until he died in 1983.

Size 6.5 ring Victor Coochwytewa is widely regarded as one of the most influential Hopi silversmiths of the 20th century. A master of overlay jewelry and a pillar of his community, his work helped define the standards and aesthetics that Hopi jewelers continue to follow today. His career, which spanned more than 60 years, earned him national recognition, including being named an Arizona Indian Living Treasure in 1994. Born on June 7, 1922, in the village of Shungopavi on Second Mesa, Victor was a member of the Waterhouse Clan. He first learned the basics of silversmithing in 1940 under the guidance of Paul Saufkie. But his early career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served with distinction in the South Pacific. A member of the 167th Combat Military Police and later the 5309th Infantry Division under General Frank Merrill (Merrills Marauders), Victor saw heavy combat in Burma and was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbons. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Victor returned to Hopi and became one of the first students in the now-legendary Veterans Classes established under the G.I. Bill. Taught by Fred Kabotie and Paul Saufkie, these classes marked the beginning of a new era in Hopi silversmithing. Victor not only mastered the overlay technique but innovated within itintroducing a background texturing method inspired by leatherwork that became a defining feature of Hopi overlay jewelry. Victor‘s designs, executed in both sterling silver and gold, are known for their precision, spiritual depth, and elegant symbolism. Many of his pieces reflect Hopi traditions and cosmology, and his work has been collected by major institutions and private collectors around the world. In addition to his artistry, Victor was deeply rooted in the traditional Hopi way of life. A lifelong dry farmer, he raised corn, squash, beans, and watermelons without irrigation or chemical inputs, relying entirely on prayer, ceremony, and natural rainfall. “Jewelry is my hobby; corn is my work, he once said with characteristic humility. He attributed the success of both his crops and his craft to blessings from the Creator. “When you pray, you should pray for all things, and in return, all things are benefited. Nothing can be accomplished without prayer. Victor retired from silversmithing and farming in 2006 and continued to live with his family at Hopi until his passing on July 3, 2011, at the age of 89. Today, his legacy lives on in the work of his descendants and in the broader community of Hopi artists who follow the path he helped shape. His jewelry remains among the most iconic and sought-after expressions of Hopi artistryno serious collection of Hopi overlay work is truly complete without a piece by Victor Coochwytewa.

His parents, Richard and Gladys Kagenveama, were very prominent artists. His mother, Gladys is considered one of the top Hopi coil basket weavers.Bennetts jewelry exudes a level of intricate detail not seen in other Hopi overlay jewelry. He created his jewelry by overlaying multiple layers of silver and finished with delicate oxidation and intricate hand texturing. This interesting contrast in the textures of his silverwork is what really makes his work stand out. Bennett specialized in the Kachina designs, including dance scenes with kivas and pueblos in the background. Bennett passed away in 2025. Beyond being a wonderful artist, he was a friend who we will greatly miss. Bennett was a soft spoken, humble, and very kind man. He was very well thought of by his peers and his work garnered praise from collectors all over the world.

Vintage 1940‘s UITA-26 Navajo sterling silver turquoise screw back earrings. Circa second quarter of the 20th century, In 1931, a group of trading post owners and operators founded the United Indian Traders Association (UITA), a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the authenticity of Native American arts and crafts. B.I. Staples was named the first president of the association. The first offices were at the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial Association hogan on Santa Fe Plaza in Gallup, New Mexico. The UITA‘s stated goals were: 1) to promote improved business practices among Indian traders, arts and crafts dealers, Indians, and all related agencies; 2) to promote, encourage, and protect the manufacture and sale of genuine Indian handmade arts and crafts; and 3) to promote the general welfare of those engaged in the business of Indian trading, as well as the welfare of the Navajo Indians and all other Indians of North America. The UITA addressed issues of importance to traders primarily on the Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni reservations. One major concern was whether imitation Native American arts and crafts should be allowed to be sold anywhere on the reservations. Along with lease negotiations with the tribal governments came the issue of whether a trader could dig a private well on the trading post lease site. Taxation was also a major topic. Should traders pay property tax on the reservation to the county or state government? The intersection of tribal, county, state, and national governments on the reservations complicated these questions, and the UITA could and did employ lawyers to help settle the questions.

Lorenzo Tortalita, Kewa Pueblo - Santo Domingo Pueblo, was an active jeweler from before the 1970s until he passed away in the late 1990s. He was the son of Cipriana Tenorio Tortalita & Reyes Tortalita. He was married to Vickie Reano. Tortalita won a first place award at the 1970 Santa Fe Indian Market and a third place award in 1977. He exhibited annually at Santa Fe Indian Market from 1963 to 1998. His works have been published in numerous magazines and other publications.

Size 6 ring LEO YAZZIE Leo Yazzie has been designing and creating fine jewelry for more than 30 years. Born and raised at Black Mesa on the Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona, the influence of the land and his culture is a part of each piece of his contemporary and sophisticated jewelry. Leo uses both gold and silver to create jewelry with a unique combination of traditional and contemporary designs. “The inspiration for many of my designs came from watching my grandmother, mother and other women in the family weaving rugs. They told me their designs came from Spider. Now, I make designs inspired by the patterns they wove. Leos patterns vary, from a delicate cutout border with intricate detail to bold geometrics. It might be a gold panel with a geometric motif overlaid on a silver pendant; a cut-out stepped pattern encircling a stone; or a lightning shaped band on a ring. Whatever the pattern, the effect is sophisticated and elegant. The classic use of turquoise and coral is a favorite combination of Leos. The coral may range from pale pink to a very deep red. Leo uses turquoise of the highest quality, sometimes rare pieces from famous mines that have been closed for years. “I love working with quality stones, says Leo. To guarantee hed always have the best materials to work with, Leo has collected high quality stones from gem shows and traders over the years. In addition to turquoise and coral, Leo uses other semi-precious stones from around the world like sugilite, lapis, gaspeite, white opals and more. Sugilite has gained in popularity since its introduction in the 1980s. Found in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa, this stone with its deep rich purple to soft lavender color works beautifully with turquoise, or on its own. Leo enjoys pairing it with the fire in white opals. Leos settings are all handmade, often built up layer-by-layer. Designs are sawed out and appliquéd. Rich multi-colored side inlay will often be added to highlight a larger stone or add accent colors to the design. He uses channel inlay on some pieces, with the stones precisely cut flush with each other, so that they almost appear to be one stone. Some pieces will have a sculptural inlay, where each stone is cut and shaped, then fitted together. Leos avant-garde work is fitting for todays contemporary fashions. His attention to detail and craftsmanship is evident in each piece and reflects his willingness to take the time to let a design emerge. “I enjoy what I do and I like to take my time with each piece, says Leo. Chief Shatka Bear-Step Appaloosa Horse Club Champion belt buckle sterling silver. Fits up to a 1.5" belt. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. Chief Shatka Bear-Step (1898-1980; otherwise known as Richard Spencer) who was both an accomplished and well known silversmith. Not only was Shatka Bear-Step a silversmith but he was also passionate about the Appaloosa horse breed. The Appaloosa Horse Club (an international breed registry), inducted Chief Shatka Bear-Step into their hall of fame in 1988, and on their website they describe him in this way: "An Appaloosa showman and promoter, Shatka Bear-Step added colorful and romantic aspects to the breed. Shatka was the father of Mr. Dick Spencer (Western Horseman Magazine) and a well-known silver and turquoise artist. He was featured on national television depicting the Lord‘s Prayer in Indian Sign Language. He produced several awards for the Appaloosa Horse Club, including the Shatka Bear-Step award given to the overall high point youth at each National Show." His love for the Appaloosa breed is apparent in the book he wrote and illustrated, "Painted Ponies" It was originally published in 1952.

Alvin/Lula Begay Navajo sterling silver turquoise/coral inlay ranger belt buckle set. Fits up to a .75" belt. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in pictures. This is in "New old Stock" condition, likely 20-30 years old but has never been on a belt. In 1956, Alvin and Lula Begay were both born into artistic families in Winslow, Arizona. They have worked as a silversmithing team since 1991, each serving their own role; Alvin works on the overall composition and construction of the piece, while Lula works on the setting/cutting of the stones as well as the polishing and final touches. The dynamic pair is known to not use any pre-made findings, everything outside of earring posts are handcrafted. Alvin is especially known for using his techniques of double and triple overlay, reversible necklaces, shadowboxes, and engraving--often all on the same piece! While still very adept in the art of jewelry-making, Alvins first love is bareback riding in rodeos. He grew up in a traditional Navajo life style on the reservation and is a natural athlete and cowboy. He has competed for 10 years, winning championships in 1987 and 1989. Although Alvin is a very humble and unassuming individual, he is one on AIRCAs top award winners. Awards in jewelry-making are also no stranger to Alvin; among several awards, he has won first with a necklace in a competition in Dallas, Texas.

Hopi artist Bernard Dawahoya was considered by all to be a master silversmith. His Hopi name was Masaqueva (Wings of the sun). He was born in the second Mesa village of Shungopavi. Not only a master jeweler, but a respected storyteller and a man of great talents. He passed away in 2010. His work is displayed in Museums across the country and in many publications.

No issues, circa last quarter of the 20th century. Cecil Ashley is a respected Navajo Master silversmith who signs his pieces “CA sterling. Cecil is well known for his quality of material and meticulous workmanship in his one-of-a-kind collectible designs. He is best known for his extraordinary lapidary skills, whose signature style is creating some of the best mosaic inlay work today. Cecil worked for the Brown family, Browns Trading Company in Safford, Arizona in the mid-80‘s and had access to top grade Morenci turquoise, which he used to create many beautiful jewelry pieces. There he honed his craft before venturing out on his own and establishing his own studio. Most of Cecils pieces have a variety of colorful, inlaid materials including spiny oyster, onyx, lapis, opal and the rare Dragon Skin or Brown Spider Web turquoise. These stones are most often inlaid in asymmetrical settings. His other silverwork is classic Navajo stamp work with classically set stones.
