44" Sarah Grey Navajo Stamped Sterling Silver Dollars concho belt. Huge and heavy belt that fits up to a 44" waist but can be hooked at different places or conchos could even be removed, or it could be a necklace that doubles up. Though<br>fabrication, metal stamping, and some casting, I explore how light and<br>reflection interacts with the materials I utilize. I’ve found that polished<br>silver takes in the colors and the light of the world around, and through the<br>use of surface texture a dynamic play of light is created across the surface of<br>my designs. I further enhance my work thought the use of semi-precious stones<br>(agates, quartz, jades, etc.). However one of the most important qualities in my<br>selection of stones is often translucency. I’ve found that by allowing light to<br>shine though a stone an overall rich and warm effect is created in the overall<br>design.<br><br>Along with my yearly schedule of shows where I sell my designs, I’ve also made<br>it a point to educate the public about my work. Growing up in my father’s<br>studio, I always saw just how much of himself he put into his designs and how<br>sometimes he was met with disbelief as to how much work was put into his pieces.<br>I found this to be a similar case when I entered the business, as the general<br>public only sees the finished piece. For that reason, though in person<br>demonstrations and self-produced video mini-documentaries, we’ve made it a point<br>to show the skill, time, and passion that goes into every design. Sterling Native American Kachina Pendant/pin. Amazing piece, unmarked, tested sterling. From an extremely high end Native American jewelry collection that was collected over pretty much the entire last quarter of the 20th century through yearly trips to New Mexico. Carving<br>attributed to Leekya Deyuse, another cast bracelet with similar carving also on<br>a high quality stone, also with the same seam in the back center as this one,<br>also with three scratched letters which were likely a pricing code at the time<br>was sold by Cowan's auction in 2020 with the carving attributed to Leekya<br>Deyuse.<br><br>LEEKYA DEYUSE (1889-1966)<br>Leekya Deyuse is unquestionably the most famous of the Zuni Carvers. One of the<br>most expert and innovative carvers of his time, to this day his works command<br>the highest prices by collectors and museums alike. Sotheby’s sold a necklace<br>with turquoise leaves set in silver, well in excess of $35,000.00.<br><br>His carving legacy lives on through his children whom he taught to carve and who<br>are now or were master jewellers or carvers in their own right. Jolene is<br>a recipient of a fellowship from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts<br>(SWAIA) and has worked with SWAIA’s mentor program, teaching jewelry techniques<br>to Native students.<br><br>Jolene’s jewelry is characterized by the quality of materials and its striking<br>individuality. She says, “Whoever said you have to play by the rules? I want my<br>jewelry to say something. It cannot be just jewelry. In my jewelry, design and<br>fabrication have to deal with personal experiences and traditional values<br>conflicting and collaborating with present society.”<br><br>Jolene’s parents once said to their children, “If you’re going to do jewelry at<br>tall, you have to do it our way, the right way.” It wasn’t the designs they were<br>talking about, it was the technical aspects of their work: setting stones,<br>welds, and engravings. Born in 1946 in<br>San Juan Pueblo, his artistic interests were fostered in a household of<br>creativity. His grandmother Luteria Atencio was a respected potter whose works<br>are in the Smithsonian Institution. His mother Lorencita Bird was an<br>accomplished and well-known Pueblo textile artist and educator. After learning<br>some basic metal-working skills in junior high school, Mike began serious work<br>with metals in the late 1960s, teaching himself from books on the topic and<br>buying some old tools while making others. By the 1980s, Mike had emerged as a<br>major figure in contemporary Native American jewelry making. Selecting only the<br>best, most dramatic materials, Mike became known for bold, sculptural<br>interpretations of traditional designs.<br><br>Although he is largely a self-taught artist, Mike’s work has been influenced<br>both by extensive research into historic Navajo and Pueblo jewelry and by<br>observing great silversmiths who lived near his home including Mark Chee and<br>Julian Lovato.
