I grew up always with a fascination of the West and it took two trips and almost thirty years to finally get here. Since 1974 I have lived in the Four Corners region but it wasn‘t until 1975 that my now former wife and I were able to finally settle down in a home. We were able to find a place in Southwestern Colorado, about 35 miles southeast of Durango, Colorado. We had upon coming west, given up the fast city life of rural Cleveland, Ohio, and had no idea where we were going. We ended up in Durango, by a twist of fate. We had been trying to figure on how to earn a living while traveling around the west and by another twist we got interested in Southwestern style jewelry and that brought us to Durango, Colorado. In the year that followed we had started to produce some jewelry of our own mainly because I wanted to do something different and also because it seemed a way of staying out the mainstream of having a job!! Upon our arrival we opened a small trading post north of Durango, at a place called Purgatory, a ski area. One Winter was all it took to decide that winter in Colorado was tough. We ended up the following year on a ranch closer to Durango, where we met a lady whose name was Sally Carleno. She offered us a chance to trade her for 80 acre ranch and a small town in Colorado called Tiffany and she wanted us to make jewelry to trade her for this little place. Think about that. It was a great opportunity and we jumped on the deal, and that was in 1976. Much has taken place since then and now twenty 27 years later I am still producing jewelry and so does my former wife. We have two great kids, both born in Colorado, one in college to become a horse Vet, and the other a builder in Arizona. Kenny Bracken

Andy Lee Kirk was a Master contemporary Native American artist of Isleta and Navajo heritage, who died tragically at the height of his career at the age of 54. He created beautiful gold and silver jewelry using the finest materials from 1970 to 2001. Born in 1947, he originally earned a degree in biology continuing on to work for the Fish and Wildlife and Forest Services. Andy had learned the basics of jewelry making at the University of New Mexico and with the urging of Navajo artist, Gibson Nez, he made the decision to become a full time jeweler. Andy Lee Kirk was a consummate artist with many fine skills. He did lapidary work, rolling his own beads, and had mastered many types of precious metalwork including lost wax and sand cast techniques, stamping, engraving, overlay and fabrication. His artistic innovation reached further than aesthetic beauty alone. His designs were brilliant a perfect balance between clean modern lines, meaningful symbolism, and bright southwestern colors such as lapis lazuli, turquoise, and red coral. HIS LIFE: Kirk Smith first began working with silver at around age 7 in his grandfather’s hidden workshop, that according to Smith’s interview with Perry Null Trading, “you would not see it unless you knew it was there”. He later used these primitive skills to craft jewelry for his uncle, who would exchange clothes and shoes for his pieces. In 1972, Kirk struck out on his own, primarily working in silver cast work, until the price of silver went up in 1974 and he went to work doing different things like working in the mine or a refinery in Galveston. He returned to jewelry making in the early 1980s when his mother got sick and he desired to be nearer to her. That’s when his craft took a turn. HIS MENTORS: Of course, his grandfather was his earliest influence, and perhaps the most profound on Kirk as a person, but when it comes to his craftsmanship, the game-changer for him was his brother-in-law. Kirk’s sister was married to an artisan named Harry Morgan, a well-known name in the world of Native American jewelry. Harry was known for his intricate stamp work and the way he would style his silver to give it an antique look, believing that overly polished silver hid the detailing and the beauty of a piece. It was Harry who really taught Kirk about design and style in terms of his craft. HIS CRAFT: Kirk is probably best known for his concho belts, like the one we found in Audrey’s closet, that we thought was too beautiful not to share with y’all after being tucked away for too long. He was known for his unrelenting insistence on working his silver by hand, resulting in beautiful pieces of heavy silver and high-grade stones. In addition to concho belts, Kirk crafted gorgeous statement cuff bracelets with turquoise and red coral and some of the most striking blue lapis you’ve ever seen, as well as some rings, pendants, earrings, and even a few squash blossoms. As we mentioned, his work is highly collectible, not only because of its stunning beauty, but because sadly, there won’t be any more made; Kirk was tragically killed in 2012. HIS DEATH: On September 17, 2012, Kirk was in an altercation in a parking lot with a young man whose truck had struck Kirk’s vehicle as the man was attempting to back into a parking spot. When the driver, who was intoxicated, tried to flee the scene, Kirk jumped onto the hood of the man’s truck. When he was eventually unable to maintain his grip, Kirk was flung from the moving vehicle and suffered injuries which resulted in his death in an Albuquerque hospital a little while later. The driver did succeed in fleeing the scene, but eventually collided with another truck and a barrier on Interstate 25 and was apprehended after a violent struggle with police; he was found to have had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16, twice the legal limit. Incredibly, the driver, who was 16 at the time, was only sentenced to 90 days in a treatment center and two years probation. As you might imagine, Kirk’s surviving family does not feel that justice was done in the wake of his death, but they are carrying on his legacy in a positive way despite the circumstances.

Roan was included in the 2002 exhibit “Jewels of the Southwest” at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, Santa Fe. His work is included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, and the Yellowhorse Museum in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Part Apache and part German, artist Marc Antia is a self-taught silversmith that has being making jewelry for decades. When he isnt masterfully working on new pieces, he travels across the United States to display his work at Native American jewelry and craft shows. Marc has created a following for his elaborate stamped jewelry. He often combines sterling silver and 14k gold to make pendants, rings, and cuffs. Despite the formality presented by his use of gold in Marcs jewelry, the durability of his pieces is apparent; upon wearing, one immediately knows this is something that can take the abuse of a daily wear. And yet, they are surprisingly lightweight. One well-versed in Native American jewelry might notice that the traditional Navajo stamp style seen in Marcs jewelry is liken to a fellow Native American artists work: Emerson Bill. This is no coincidence, as both artists learned the ways of their trade together. This occurred in their salad days, and they grew to be close friends. Marcs work can be distinguished from Emersons by his addition of extra embellishments and flourishes in his stamp work. His classic stamping on his gold and silver jewelry make Marcs work wearable with just about any outfit or color scheme, let alone that it works incredibly well with other Native American handmade jewelry pieces. While still formal and ornate, Marcs work also reflects humility in both its function and its roots in traditional technique.
