c1880 Ferdinand Barbedienne, French, 1810-1892 Bronze Plaque Mother and Child. Nice antique bronze plaque guaranteed late 19th century. 14" wide, 8 pounds. Ferdinand Barbedienne (Jan 10, 1810 – Mar 21,1892) was a French metalworker and manufacturer, he was well known as a bronze founder. Born the son of a small farmer from Calvados, Barbedienne started his career as a dealer in wallpaper in Paris. In 1838 he went into partnership with Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had just invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniature antique statues from museums all over Europe, thus democratising art and making it more accessible to households. From 1843 they extended their scope by reproducing the work of living artists and also diversified by making enamelled household objects. The F. Barbedienne foundry was started in Paris in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and his partner, Achille Collas, who was the inventor of a machine that would mechanically reduce statues. At first they produced bronze reductions of antique sculptures of Greek and Roman origin. Their first contract to produce bronzes modeled by a living artist was made in 1843 when they arranged to produce the works of Francois Rude. They barely survived the revolution and financial collapse of 1848 which caused many artists and foundries to declare bankruptcy. Barbedienne actively pursued contracts with the many sculptors of Paris contracting with David D'Angers, Jean-Baptiste Clesinger, and even producing some casts for Antoine Louis Barye, as well as others. Achille Collas died in 1859 leaving Ferdinand Barbedienne as the sole owner of the foundry which by that time had grown to employ over 300 workers at their workshop in Paris. Barbedienne became President of the Reunion of Bronze Makers in 1865,a post he held until 1885. The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 and the shortage of raw metals caused him to have to stop making sculptures but he did receive a contract from the French government for the production of cannons which kept his foundry open. After the war he resumed his casting of sculptures and put even more effort into signing contracts with various sculptors. Barbedienne purchased 125 casting models from the late Antoine Louis Barye's sale in 1876. He set about casting and selling editions of these sculptures which was very successful, devoting an entire catalogue to these works. Ferdinand Barbedienne died on March 21, 1891 and was mourned by many in the world of sculpture. It was said that he strove to the highest quality in his castings Albert Susse said of him that he was the "pride of the nation" and that that he "carried the splendor of our industry so loftily to all international competitions". The running of the foundry was taken over by Gustave Leblanc, a nephew, and continued the high standards set by Barbedienne. The foundry set up agencies in Germany, Britain, and the United States to market their production. Leblanc actively purchased models and production rights form sculptors including Auguste Rodin and the estates of sculptures including Emmanuel Fremiet. The foundry continued under the stewardship of M. Leblanc until 1952. tw138

Antique Persian Copper Coffee Pot. This is a really early piece, hundreds of
years old I think. It was laquered on the exterior and put on display about 60
years ago and was an antique then. There's caked up limescale all in the
interior and a really nice patina that is more evident on the base and inside
the lid. There is a dent in the front of the base that causes it to sit a little
lopsided. c1910 33cm Hand Painted Royal Vienna Style Art Nouveau Period and style portrait
vase with heavy gilding. I like to think I'm an expert in quality and this is a
premium quality period art nouveau vase from the early 20th century. The
porcelain is heavy and factory ground on the base, the entire piece is hand
decorated including the portrait and the gold. I'm unsure of the manufacturer.
I'm guaranteeing it to be European, likely Germany (Austria or Dresden) from the
first quarter of the 20th century and hand painted with no cracks, chips,
restorations, or significant loss. It's 13" tall x 5.5" wide. It came from a
muti-million dollar art glass collection, they had the best of the best from the
late 19th and early 20th centuries. This was one of just a few pieces of
porcelain they had to compliment the glass.
B26

This is a really special and over the top
piece that required immense skill to make. The bronze frame is heavy so when it
is opened it will tip easily when the back leg is fully extended so it will need
to be on a not so slick surface if you intent to display it open with the photos
showing rather than with the incredible Pietra Dura plaque showing. No
detectable issues, some expected wear to the gold gilding on the bronze.
TW126

Pietra dura (Italian: [ˈpjɛːtra ˈduːra]) or pietre dure [ˈpjɛːtre ˈduːre] (see
below), called parchin kari or parchinkari (Persian: پرچین کاری) in the Indian
Subcontinent, is a term for the inlay technique of using cut and fitted, highly
polished colored stones to create images. It is considered a decorative art. The
stonework, after the work is assembled loosely, is glued stone-by-stone to a
substrate after having previously been "sliced and cut in different shape
sections; and then assembled together so precisely that the contact between each
section was practically invisible". Stability was achieved by grooving the
undersides of the stones so that they interlocked, rather like a jigsaw puzzle,
with everything held tautly in place by an encircling 'frame'. Many different
colored stones, particularly marbles, were used, along with semiprecious, and
even precious stones. It first appeared in Rome in the 16th century, reaching
its full maturity in Florence. Pietra dura items are generally crafted on green,
white or black marble base stones. Typically, the resulting panel is completely
flat, but some examples where the image is in low relief were made, taking the
work more into the area of hardstone carving.

1919 American Tramp Art Sewing Box with Pincushion Top Dated WW1 Era 8.25" x
6.5" x 5.25" tall. Very minimal wear as shown, not a distraction, no significant
issues. Made from cigar boxes as shown from the exposed section on the base.
From a San Antonio, Texas estate.
The first picture is actually the back of the box with the initials on the front
and the date on the back.

Tramp art
Tramp art is a style of woodworking which emerged in America the latter half of
the nineteenth century. Some of tramp art's defining characteristics include
chip or notch carving, the reclaimation of cheap or available wood such as that
from cigar boxes and shipping crates, the use of simple tools such as penknives,
and the layering of materials into geometric shapes through glue or nails. One
technique used in tramp art is Crown of Thorns joinery.

History
Although widespread use of wooden cigar boxes in the 1850s sparked involvement
in tramp art, it was most prevalent during the Great Depression. Tramp art was
made around the world but it prospered in the United States. Examples can be
found in every state. The most common forms were the box and the frame and
although there were no rules or patterns to lend commonality in the artists’
work there were objects made in every conceivable shape and size including full
sized furniture and objects of whimsy.

Tramp art was a democratic art form made wherever the raw materials used in its
construction were found. It appealed to men who might have made an important
body of work such as ‘Sunflower’ artist John Martin Zubersky (active c. 1912 –
1920) or the wonderfully expressive wall pockets by John Zadzora (active circa
1910) but also to men who might have made one piece in their lifetime. It was
easy to make and appealed to anyone who had a desire to take a pocketknife to
wood.

There were countless men, some women, and even children who historically
constructed tramp art.

Origins of the Term
A 1959 article by Frances Lichten in Pennsylvania Folklife used the term "tramp
work" to describe crafts constructed from waste materials such as discarded
cigar boxes and assembled with a penknife. Contemporary scholars and art dealers
such as Clifford A. Wallach have noted that while this art form may have been
practiced among America's itinerant population, it was by no means unique to
them and was practiced by factory workers, farmers, and laborers in other
occupations.

In 1975 Helaine Fendelman published the first book on tramp art, Tramp Art an
Itinerant's Folk Art. The book acted as a catalog to the first museum show on
the art form sponsored by the American Museum of Folk Art.
b30

c1870's Saloon Back Bar Liquor Bottles with Etched Gilt Advertising San
Francisco Nestor Maryland Rye Gibson's Whiskey Pennsylvania
The Nestor Maryland Rye bottle was actually from a distillery named KOPPEL &
DWAN that operated in San Francisco, CA 1877-1878, it's extremely rare blown
bottle, it's not etched just gold gilding. They're both rare. Largest is 9 1/8",
other is 6.75". The Gibson's bottle is engraved with gilding in the engraving.
The facets are polished and it has a ground pontil. Originally, Gibson was a
producer of American, not Canadian, rye. John Gibson was a western Pennsylvania
distiller who started up in the 1830s, and by 1856, according to Canadian whisky
guru Davin de Kergommeaux, his operation spanned 40 acres alongside the
Monongahela. Once Prohibition rolled around, though, the distillery shut down
and was demolished. A New York company called Schenley Industries bought the
rights to the Gibson’s name and held onto them until 1972, when Schenley started
using it for Canadian whisky produced at a distillery it owned in Valleyfield,
Quebec.
No cracks or chips, or excessive wear to the bottles. They both have minor
mineral deposits in the bottom that I didn't attempt to clean.
I May split these up if you care to make a reasonable offer.
B22

Antique Hand Painted Limoges Lamp w/Neoclassical Woman Playing Lyre. Really nice
lamp with no damage in working condition. It's been rewired but the brass base
is early 20th century. By the Shape of the porcelain vase I think it may have
always been a lamp but have no way of knowing for sure. I did once see a very
similar shape in an oil lamp bring close to $2000 at auction, so maybe it was
once an oil lamp. I can't find a mark but the quality is unmistakably Limoges
French porcelain from the late 19th to early 20th century. Measures 19.5" to top
of socket where bulb goes, 27" to the top of the loop (not shown) where the
shade will rest, and 14" to the bottom of the brass stem that goes up for the
socket.

1930's Yale Town Padlock From Mount Royal Hotel Baltimore MD with Room key and Tag. This is a cool set I'm certain it's been together since it's beginning. The lock works with the key inside it. This was likely Hotel property as. The Mount Royal Hotel and Apartments were designed in 1899 by the well-respected Baltimore architect, Edward H. Glidden. The Neo-Italian Renaissance style buildings were constructed in early 1900; the 103 East Mount Royal Avenue building served as an upscale hotel and the 101 East Mount Royal Avenue building contained all upscale apartments. Centered in the rich artistic and cultural life concentrated in the then city’s center, Mount Vernon, Baltimore, The Mount Royal Hotel and Apartments were a very desirable place to visit as a hotel guest, or to live in as a resident of the apartments. Once the Pennsylvania Train Station was completed in 1911, The Mount Royal’s appeal only increased, as the property’s location attracted daily commuters to and from Washington, DC. Even in 1911, the train ride from Penn Station to Union Station was just 40 minutes. b12

c1900 Michigan State University Morill Hall Wall Plaque Lead/Pewter Relief Bust
in Mission Oak Frame. I bought this piece a few years ago from a woman that told
me she purchased it from some sort of liquidation sale Michigan State
University. I'm still looking for the piece of paper where I had her write it
down but It might not turn up for years. I did find that Morill hall was
demolished in 2013 which was about 4 years before I bought this piece. I know
for a fact it was MSU and I know it was Morill Hall I just don't remember the
date she acquired it, not sure if I asked. It seems Morill hall was a women's
building in 1900. This piece is for sure that old. I would bet my life it's from
1900-1910. It's unsigned, I don't know who the artist or the woman is. I think
there's a good chance they're both someone famous. To me this looks to be a one
of a kind handmade piece and I don't think there could've been may artists at
that time or now capable of such a feat. It has minor wear as shown. It is very
heavy. It measures 16" wide x 20" tall. This piece represents quite a bit not
just for people interested in Michigan stuff but It's an important part of
Women's Educational History and the evolution of this country.

In December 2012, History said goodbye to Morrill Hall and moved to the Old
Horticulture Building.

Opened in 1900, Morrill Hall was first named the Women’s Building. Though women
were admitted to MSU in small numbers beginning in 1870, a women’s course was
not introduced until 1896. As the number of women rose, the university need a
dormitory—the Women’s Building. The Dean of women had a residence on the first
floor and home economics instructors lived on the upper floors. There was space
for 120 women students and a dining room, cooking and sewing laboratories, a
woodshop, music rooms, and a gym. According to a catalog from the day, women
residents were subject “to only such restraints as would be expected in a well
regulated Christian family.” By 1926, modifications allowed for the housing of
200 women in the building.

In the mid-1930s, increased enrollment in the Women’s course made necessary the
construction of new dormitories. As women students moved into new buildings,
Morrill Hall was converted in 1937 into classrooms and offices for the Liberal
Arts Division. That year the building was officially named Morrill Hall in honor
of Vermont Senator Justin Smith Morrill. He had been instrumental in forging the
federal Morrill Act, which established land-grant colleges. The act was critical
in the development of higher education in the United States.

As part of the Liberal Arts Division, History, along with six other departments,
established itself in Morrill in 1937. As the department grew, it came to occupy
all of the third and fourth floors and parts of the first floor and garden
level. English occupied the second floor and Religious Studies part of the
first.

About 100 years after its construction, Morrill’s age began to show. Inspections
revealed deterioration in the building’s wooden infrastructure and shallow
foundation. In 2010, the MSU Board of Regents decided that repairs were not
feasible and approved a plan for demolition.

Events then unfolded quickly. In summer 2012, English and Religious Studies were
moved from Morrill to Wells Hall. Romance

Old photo of Old Horticulture Building
Old Horticulture Building

Languages, which had been in Old Horticulture, was also moved to Wells. Crews
then did minor renovations on Old Hort. History was the last department to
vacate Morrill during a move which took several weeks.

Morrill Hall was demolished in summer 2013. In spring 2014, the Morrill plot was
transformed into a green space with benches and gardens arranged in manner so as
to emulate the long, wide halls that characterized the old structure.

Needless to say, the move to Old Hort was time consuming. Faculty packed their
own belongings, most of which consisted of books. Crate after crate was then
taken by university movers 100 yards across campus. Faculty then unpacked their
things and began the process of settling in.

Old Hort lacks some of the charm of Morrill. Gone are the high ceilings,
hardwood floors, large windows looking out at the green, and spacious offices.
But Old Hort has proven to have some advantages. The heating system works well,
there are no rats, bats or birds inside the building, and the offices, though
smaller, are comfortable and roomy enough for multiple bookcases.

MSU sponsored some updates of Old Hort. But there is still work to be done.
Alumni and friends of the department interested in sponsoring room updates and
in conference room, office and workspace naming rights are encouraged to contact
the department chair for conversations.

History has started a Morrill Fund to honor the old building and to advance
faculty research. For more information, please contact the department chair,
Walter Hawthorne.

*Some information for this piece was derived from History Professor Madison
Kuhn’s Michigan State The First One Hundred Years (East Lansing, Michigan State
University Press, 1955).
