Fritson is a Navajo<br>artist who has been working as a serious silversmith since he was a teenager.<br>New Mexico in September of 1961 to Mae and Chee Toledo, Fritson grew up in<br>Torreon, NM. Growing up in a farming community located in a valley framed by the<br>Jemez Mountains, he passed his time drawing. Although he comes from a family of<br>weavers, Fritson found his artistic voice at a very early age while observing<br>his father working in their home as a silversmith. Fritson then taught himself<br>the art of jewelry-making using his father’s tools on the pieces of scrap silver<br>he left behind. Fritson eventually learned how to make his own tools and stamps<br>for silversmithing. He has clearly become a jewelry master using only the<br>highest quality stones.<br>Les Baker (1935-2014), southwest artist from New Mexico, was born in 1935. Les<br>learned to silversmith in 1962 when his wife at the time wanted a squash blossom<br>necklace. Les could not afford to buy one for her so he went out and bought the<br>tools to do so. At a Christmas party, Mrs. Maisel asked where she got the<br>necklace and his told her that her husband made it. From there upon request from<br>Mrs. Maisel, Les went to work for the Maisels. He was introduced to silversmithing by his older brother when he was 17. He enjoyed creating art through metal and soon learned to do other techniques such as inlay and working with gold. She learned to make traditional pottery and storytellers from her parents. After her marriage during the World War II years, she moved to her husband Ben’s home in Zuni. Ben taught her some basics of jewelry-making. She sold her first ring to legendary Zuni trader C.G. Wallace. Over the years she become and accomplished jeweler in her own right, while developing a large following for her pottery and storytellers. “There are always more orders for my claywork than there’s time to do them,” she said.The Eustaces show strong respect for the materials and time-honored processes of their art. Felicita still makes her storytellers the traditional way. Chavez<br>I began my journey as an artist learning to craft jewelry from my father,<br>Richard I Chavez, a renowned lapidary artist. I was not given exact direction as<br>to what to make but was only given the tools and instruction on how to use them.<br>Along the way my work would be critiqued by my father and I would continually<br>strive to evolve my designs and fabrication processes. He stressed the quality<br>of the design and construction making sure that every aspect of a piece looked<br>“finished” and no corners were cut.<br><br>Along with all that I learned in my father’s studio, I would receive a Bachelor<br>of Arts from Georgetown University in Studio Arts with a focus in Digital Art<br>and Printmaking. After I graduated, I would attend The Revere Academy of Jewelry<br>Arts’, Intensive Bench Jeweler Program in San Francisco. Each of these<br>educational experiences added a particular technical or visual aspect to my work<br>and would encourage me to continue to explore all the ways I could enhance my<br>designs.<br><br>My current work focuses on the reflective nature of polished silver. Though<br>fabrication, metal stamping, and some casting, I explore how light and<br>reflection interacts with the materials I utilize. I’ve found that polished<br>silver takes in the colors and the light of the world around, and through the<br>use of surface texture a dynamic play of light is created across the surface of<br>my designs. I further enhance my work thought the use of semi-precious stones<br>(agates, quartz, jades, etc.). However one of the most important qualities in my<br>selection of stones is often translucency. I’ve found that by allowing light to<br>shine though a stone an overall rich and warm effect is created in the overall<br>design.<br><br>Along with my yearly schedule of shows where I sell my designs, I’ve also made<br>it a point to educate the public about my work. Growing up in my father’s<br>studio, I always saw just how much of himself he put into his designs and how<br>sometimes he was met with disbelief as to how much work was put into his pieces.<br>I found this to be a similar case when I entered the business, as the general<br>public only sees the finished piece. For that reason, though in person<br>demonstrations and self-produced video mini-documentaries, we’ve made it a point<br>to show the skill, time, and passion that goes into every design. Carving<br>attributed to Leekya Deyuse, another cast bracelet with similar carving also on<br>a high quality stone, also with the same seam in the back center as this one,<br>also with three scratched letters which were likely a pricing code at the time<br>was sold by Cowan's auction in 2020 with the carving attributed to Leekya<br>Deyuse.<br><br>LEEKYA DEYUSE (1889-1966)<br>Leekya Deyuse is unquestionably the most famous of the Zuni Carvers. One of the<br>most expert and innovative carvers of his time, to this day his works command<br>the highest prices by collectors and museums alike. Sotheby’s sold a necklace<br>with turquoise leaves set in silver, well in excess of $35,000.00.<br><br>His carving legacy lives on through his children whom he taught to carve and who<br>are now or were master jewellers or carvers in their own right. Although C.G.Wallace who sold most of<br>Leekya’s early work, helped make him famous, Leekya also worked with Kelseys,<br>the Vander Wagens, the Kirks, John Kennedy, and Joe Tanner.<br><br>“Rubenesque” seems the term best applied to many of Leekya’s es. Sharp edges<br>rarely appear and fine detail gives way to stylized suggestion.<br><br>Also diagnostic are open mouths often with exposed tongues. Whilst he favored<br>bears as subjects Leekya also produced wolves or coyotes, wonderful livestock es<br>and birds that often appear quizzical.<br><br>Leekya used a variety of carving materials, and he worked stones in many ways.<br>For C.G.Wallace, the Kirks and the Vander Wagens, he made es that were set into<br>jewelry. One of a Kind Gold mounted sterling silver ranger belt with 5 more sets mounted<br>to it. 6 Ranger sets total. All the ranger sets from the first half of the 20th<br>century, all sterling mounted in gold, all hand engraved, I believe all are Made<br>in Mexico except one has Made in Texas, I believe it's a Nelson Bringhoff. The<br>larger main buckle is a 1" ranger set, the others are 3/4" ranger sets. Total<br>length 41", I believe it will fit a 32" to 35" waist, an extra hole could likely<br>be added for a 36". The leather is in good condition, this was custom made by<br>"The Leather Bench" of Austin Texas. The belt is 2" at widest point and tapers<br>down to 15/16".
