Lawrence Saufkie (1934-2011) was an award winning artist and important to the growth of overlay jewelry. He is one of the most important Hopi artists in history. It was Lawrence‘s father, Paul and Fred Kabotie, who began this new (new in the 1930‘s) jewelry style and taught it to the Hopi smiths and GI‘s returning after WWII. Lawrence was an extraordinary silversmith and a mentor to many of today‘s top silversmiths. He became active in 1947 and is referenced in all of the Native American jewelry books.
