Large Leon Applebaum Art glass sculptural vessel
Large Leon Applebaum Art glass sculptural vessel. This piece is really heavy, probably 10-15 pounds 9.5" X 8.5" X 5.5" Signed Leon Applebaum clearly I just couldn't photograph it. This piece can be displayed on several sides, I found one rough spot shown in the center of the second pic, I believe it could have easily left the studio like that as it isn't sharp and not in any way a distraction. No other chips, no cracks, no restorations. This piece retailed for several thousand dollars. Born in Toledo Ohio, in 1945, Leon Applebaum grew up in what would become the birthplace of American Studio glass. While an art student in Toledo, Leons’ dream of becoming a high school art teacher was shattered upon enrolling in his first hot glass class. Leon was instantly intrigued by the molten material, resulting in an addiction to working hot glass that would shape and define the rest of his life. Leon completely immersed himself into this newly discovered world of glass. He completed his BFA at the Massachusetts College of Art and then received his MA at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Although Leon experienced success exhibiting and selling his work as an undergraduate, he sought to further his education beyond what the available universities could offer. In 1973 Leon journeyed across the Atlantic to study the enduring tradition of Swedish glass forming at the Orrefor’s Glass School. There Leon began to explore the Swedish style of optically thick glass that would influence the future of his work. After a year of studying and working at Boda Glass in Sweden, Leon returned to the U.S. to pursue his MFA in glass fort he Rochester Institute of Technology. During this period, Leon was able to synthesize the Swedish glass techniques with his ideas of using the color spectrum and trapping air to create bubbles as a design element that continues to define his work. For the next 25 years Leon has been developing new ideas, techniques, and designs on hot glass. He has taught at RIT and Naples Mill Art School in Naples, NY, and conducted workshops throughout the country. Leon Applebaum’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D.C., the Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York, and the Ajeto Glass Museum, in Novy Bor, Czech Republic, among many others. He shows in many galleries, both nationally and internationally. Leon currently resides with his family in Prattsburg, NY, at the Sahaj Glass Studio. In his textured series, Leon uses tools to manipulate the surface of hot glass creating an optically transformed piece. This very non-traditional approach to glass working allows for the exploitation of the transparent and reflective qualities of glass. In Leon’s contemporary sculpture series, he uses glassblowing as a means, not and end. Leon uses cooled blown pieces that are cut in elemental forms and assembles them using ultraviolet glue. This technical approach offers great freedom to explore and execute ideas that are not possible with hot glass. Leon’s sculptures use circular forms reflecting the cyclical nature of life. With eyes toward the future, Leon plans to focus his energy on sculptural glass.

Gentile Glass Millefiori Paperweight
Gentile Glass Millefiori Paperweight. Nice large paperweight in mint condition with no scratches or dings. 3.25" tall x 3" wide. The original glass worker in the Gentile family was Peter Gentile, born in Naples, Italy in 1884. He worked in Naples(Italy), Rochester (Pennsylvania), and Morgantown (West Virginia) before building his own factory in Star City (West Virginia) in 1947. His sons, Frankie, John and Joe Gentile helped him make paperweights in the off hours at the Guild Factory in Morgantown. However, most paperweight production since WWII has been associated with Peter, John, or John's wife Gertrude Gentile. Few weights were signed prior to1963. It is believed that Gentile Glass remained in production until 2006. Most, if not all, paperweights produced from 1975 on were signed. For more information, you can read about the Gentiles in the book American Glass Paperweights and Their Makers by Jean Melvin (1967 and 1970). b34

No cracks, chips, or other issues. tw78 Erickson Glassworks Bremen, Ohio 1943-1961 Established by Carl Erickson in Bremen, Ohio (1943-1961) produced world famous handmade art glass. Carl Erickson and his brother Stephen, Swedish immigrants from Reijmre, Sweden, a famous glass center, descended from master glass blowers. Carl learned his trade at Pairpoint Manufacturing Company in New Bedford, Massachusetts where he worked for 20 years. From there in 1932, he went to Libby Glass in Toledo for four years, then a brief stay in Hollywood where he designed the chandelier for Greta Garbo's "Camille". The Blenko Glass Company in Milton, West Virginia hired him as a designer and teacher of apprentices. In 1943 Carl and Stephen Erickson bought a defunct glass factory in Bremen, Ohio. Erickson's glass patents involved what he called a "flame design" . His trademark was the extensive use of controlled bubble design which was incorporated in a heavy glass ball which served as a base for many different pieces. Carl Erickson personally designed most of the pieces manufactured at his glass works. His honors include: U.S. Parks Commission chose him to blow the first piece of glass at "Glass House Point" near Jamestown, Virginia commemorating the first U.S. glass factory The Museum of Modern Art, New York - award for good design Smithsonian Institute of Washington, D.C. commissioned him to duplicate complex old glass fixtures.
