Most likely Lone Mountain, but could also be "Indian Mountain", or possibly "#8 Turquoise" Navajo artist Ernest R. Begay Sr. was born and raised in Kayenta - Chilchinbeto, AZ. In 1975-76, Ernest took a silversmithing class at Monument Valley High School. “We used copper in the class, but thats where I got my start. I took the class because it looked like something fun and easy to do. I used to watch my brother-in-law, and his father make jewelry, they used to give me scrap silver to work with, recalls Ernest. Ernests career in jewelry making didnt really take off until he entered some rather distinguished pieces into the Navajo Nation Fair and the Gallup Intertribal Indian Ceremonial. Here, he received many awards and ribbons, which helped him begin his career as jewelry artist. Over the years, Ernest has slowly built a reputation for coral and turquoise cluster work on heavy gauge silver with deep custom-designed stamp work. Ernest gets much inspiration from traditional and old jewelry styles. “Concho belts, squash blossoms, bracelets, necklaces, rings, earrings, and belt buckles, I do them all in my own signature old style series. This old style jewelry always caught my eye. I used to go to the Trading Posts just to look at some of the old pawn on display. The ones that caught my attention were always the pieces that used the thick silver, and the stamp work on them, says Ernest. Ernest now lives in New Mexico with his wife, Readda, and twins Ernest Jr. and Faith Begay.

My maternal clan is Ts‘ah Yask‘idnii (Sagebrush Hill) with my paternal clan being Dibe Lizhini (Black Sheep). I‘m originally from Crownpoint, currently residing in Rio Rancho with my beautiful wife Melvina and our two lovely daughters. JDM_2021_HGIF&M (3).JPG My third Great-Grandfather, Gray Horse was the first silversmith in our family. His son, my second Great-Grandfather Big Horse followed suit. His daughter, my Great-Grandmother Nosbah and her husband Cutnose Charley, were third generation smiths. Fourth in line was my amazing Grandmother Louise Charley Morgan, whom my dad Harry Morgan credited as the sole inspiration for his style of jewelry making. It was a style that focused heavily on sandcasting and stamp work. Turquoise was used mostly in freeform settings which gave the pieces a beautiful balance. Although I came from a long line of silversmiths, I really had no inclination to follow in their footsteps. That changed during a golfing trip in 2005. My oldest brother Kelly encouraged me to take up silversmithing to help continue on our long standing family tradition. Shortly after I built a wooden bench out of scrap lumber, began purchasing jewelry making tools and started practicing with copper. One year later, with the guidance from my dad, my first silver project making rings and bracelets was underway. Sadly, he passed away in 2007 leaving me with the difficult but rewarding task of learning by trial and error. In 2009 I participated in my first major art show at the prestigious Santa Fe Indian Market, winning a First Place ribbon for a sterling silver jewelry box. The following year I made another jewelry box that was awarded an Honorable Mention ribbon at the Heard Guild Indian Fair & Market in Phoenix, AZ. I‘ve been fortunate enough to attend both ever since. In doing so, there have been many valuable lessons and experiences gained by participating in them. The summer of 2016 was definitely a highlight as I had the incredible experience of creating several custom made pieces for UFC legend, Cowboy Cerrone and his coaching staff. I strive to make unique, one of a kind jewelry. Whether its fabricating with commercial sheet and wire or casting and forging them by hand, the desire to create legacy art is a true passion. It‘s gold, it‘s beautiful. Boyd Tsosie is a jeweler who draws inspiration from the rich heritage of his Navajo traditions. Born in 1954, he has been making jewelry since he was sixteen years of age. In 1979, Boyd Tsosie was only 23. He was already among the top echelon of Southwestern jewelers / silversmiths (both past and present). Boyd was featured in Arizona Highways along with other greats like Jesse Monongye, his brother Richard Tsosie, Gibson Nez, James Little, and Larry Golsch. These Navajo silversmiths all would go on to build fine reputations and set the standards you see today for Southwest jewelry. Kenneth Begaye, a teacher at the Navajo Community College on the Navajo Reservation, inspired Boyd at a young age. Boyd gives credit to Kenneth for teaching him his trade. Kenneth Begay has been deemed the father of modern Navajo jewelry. Before Kenneth Begay, Navajo Indian Jewelry was much like it had been for the past 100 years. Navajo jewelry had a strong Spanish influence. Which is entirely understandable since it was a Mexican silversmith (who learned from the Spanish) that taught the first Navajo to work silver. Boyd considers Kenneth Begay a major influence and carries on today the work of Kenneth Begay. Boyd Tsosie continues to move Navajo jewelry forward and he, like Kenneth Begay, generously shares his knowledge with other silversmiths. Boyd, working with his brother Richard, first gained widespread recognition for his soldered flower and leaf designs. Later, he moved his jewelry designs to a more complex, contemporary look. Over the years Boyd has developed a contemporary style of work primarily in 14K gold combined with turquoise, coral, lapis, and sugilite. Boyd feels that he is creating “tomorrows tradition in Navajo jewelry by being given the rights and prayers by his elders to create his special pieces. He is featured in Navajo Indian Jewelry and Enduring Traditions by Jerry and Lois Jacka and North American Indian Jewelry and Adornment by Lois Dubin. In recent years, Boyd and his son have given back to the Navajo Nation with a nonprofit to give counsel and help to those with substance challenges.

Multiple stones with very old fractures, all secure in their bezels. Weight and measurements in pictures. Fred Thompson worked as a smith for Tobe Turpen at the age of 15 and built his career on the skills he learned in Turpen‘s shop. He made his own stamps, never sold to dealers, and only sold wholesale to Tobe Turpen. After serving in WWII, he continued to make pieces into the 1990‘s. He was a teacher as well as a silversmith. World renowned, he focused on traditional Navajo styles, producing his work with utmost skill using the highest quality stones available. Thompson‘s pieces are now rare and hard to find.

Vintage, possibly unworn. Jeanette Dale is a contemporary Navajo silversmith who learned from her mother, but has developed a traditional style all her own. Jeanette‘s pieces are recognizable for her distinctive combination of silverwork and beautiful natural stones. Jeanette prefers the traditional Navajo style with heavy, deep stamping and high polishes. She still follows her first employer‘s advice: to leave a mark to show the jewelry was handmade. In 1973 Jeanette was working at the Fairchild Electronics Plant in Shiprock cutting out computer chips with a diamond saw. She was the fastest cutter at the plant with the best quality work. The plant shut down that year and she lost her job. She then made the decision to become a silversmith. "It just came naturally to me," she says. "Soldering was just like I was born to it. I showed my first ring to a dealer and he hired me to make jewelry for him." After nearly 40 years of jewelry making, Jeanette doesn‘t have to convince anyone to buy her jewelry. She has won top awards at the Gallup Intertribal ceremonial and her work is sought after by the top collectors in the world.
