1.75" Les Baker Shop Navajo sterling silver vintage carved turquoise belt buckle. Solid sterling silver (tested) with weight and measurements in pictures. Circa third quarter of the 20th century. Age appropriate wear. Fits a 1.75" belt.Les Baker was a well-known southwest jewelry artist who designed and also made jewelry himself. Although he was Anglo he employed many Native American silversmiths throughout the years, most notably Fritson Toledo, the great Navajo artist. Les had a great deal to do with the success of the Stagecoach. We have sold more Les Baker jewelry throughout the years than any other jewelry artist. But beyond that, Les was a great mentor and friend to Susan and Gary, here at the Stagecoach. Back in the late 1970’s Gary called Les about selling his jewelry. Gary and his father, Jim, met Les in Denver and have sold his jewelry ever since. In the early 1980’s, Gary spent a week in Albuquerque while one of Les’ Navajo silversmiths taught Gary the craft. This was one of the turning points at the Stagecoach. We could now size our own sterling silver and gold rings and eventually make our own jewelry right here at the Stagecoach. This was and is a huge advantage in selling jewelry as our knowledge of the craft went up exponentially. And for all this, Les asked nothing in return.Les was born in 1935 and when he was older joined the Navy. He told me once that he lied about his age to get into the Navy and became one of the youngest Navy pilots ever. After the Korean War he headed back to New Mexico and became interested in American Indian jewelry. His wife at the time (ex-wife now) wanted a Navajo squash blossom necklace but Les couldn’t afford it. He was always resourceful and since Les didn’t have the money to purchase the squash blossom he figured he would try making one himself. It turned out so nice that when Les’ wife was at a party with Edith Maisel, the “Queen of Indian Jewelry” was so impressed that she offered Les a job. Maisel helped popularize “Indian Jewelry” and though it wasn’t actually handmade, Maisels’ offered many Native Americans a job and increased the awareness of this art form. This was Les’ big break and he later also learned from the great Native American artist Carl Louthy.Eventually Les opened his own shop and was at the right time and the right place when the great “Indian Jewelry” boom in the 1970’s hit. Everybody wanted this turquoise Indian jewelry, from celebrities to the common man and woman. Les teamed up for a while with Bing Crosby (not the singer but the Indian Trader) and at one time had around 50 Native Americans working for him.Les developed his signature look, the swirling free flowing scroll work with leaves and flowers which he used throughout his life. He was one of the first to incorporate gold and diamonds into “Indian Jewelry”. Even though he had his own signature “look”, he was an expert at many different styles and techniques. David Taliman Navajo/Cochiti pueblo stamped sterling silver turquoise pin/brooch. Selling the pin shown, circa mid 20th century. Tested and guaranteed solid sterling silver with weight and measurements in the photos.David Taliman (1902-1967), was born near Ganado, Arizona in the eastern part of the Navajo Reservation of a Navajo father and a Cochiti Pueblo mother. He subsequently attended Riverside Indian School in southern California after which he began his silversmithing career as an apprentice to the extraordinary Navajo silversmith, Fred Peshlakai, son of Slender-Maker-of-Silver and one of the true giants in the history of Navajo silversmithing, at Peshlakais shop in nearby Los Angeles in the 1920s. Taliman subsequently moved to New Mexico in the late 1920‘s where he worked as a benchsmith in various prominent Indian trading post shops such as Maisels in Albuquerque, Spanish and Indian Trading in Santa Fe and Julius Gans Southwest Arts and Crafts also in Santa Fe where he worked alongside such Navajo silversmithing luminaries as Mark Chee and Ambrose and Sam Roanhorse before going on his own in the late 1940s. In 1953, after marrying a Santa Clara Pueblo woman, Taliman moved to Santa Clara Pueblo 30 miles or so north of Santa Fe where he continued making silver and also taught silversmithing until his death in 1967. Native American jewelry artisan Kirk Smith, or Kiyaa Alani Shush Dine (his Dine tribe name, meaning “towering house bear people clan), created a long-lasting legacy in a tragically short life. His work is highly regarded for its quality craftsmanship and his use of stones of only the highest quality and richest coloring. Kirks pieces, primarily his concho belts for which he was best known, have long been coveted and collectible, with their value only increasing as a result of his unexpected, early death. His story is an interesting one.HIS LIFE: Kirk Smith first began working with silver at around age 7 in his grandfathers hidden workshop, that according to Smiths interview with Perry Null Trading, “you would not see it unless you knew it was there. His grandfather also made jewelry and Kirk used to aid him by first learning to run the bellow to heat the charcoal that would allow his grandfather to work with the silver at high temperatures, and then eventually began to work with beads and bracelets and necklaces himself. He later used these primitive skills to craft jewelry for his uncle, who would exchange clothes and shoes for his pieces. In 1972, Kirk struck out on his own, primarily working in silver cast work, until the price of silver went up in 1974 and he went to work doing different things like working in the mine or a refinery in Galveston. He returned to jewelry making in the early 1980s when his mother got sick and he desired to be nearer to her. Thats when his craft took a turn.HIS MENTORS:Of course, his grandfather was his earliest influence, and perhaps the most profound on Kirk as a person, but when it comes to his craftsmanship, the game-changer for him was his brother-in-law. Kirks sister was married to an artisan named Harry Morgan, a well-known name in the world of Native American jewelry. Harry was known for his intricate stamp work and the way he would style his silver to give it an antique look, believing that overly polished silver hid the detailing and the beauty of a piece. It was Harry who really taught Kirk about design and style in terms of his craft.HIS CRAFT:Kirk is probably best known for his concho belts, like the one we found in Audreys closet, that we thought was too beautiful not to share with yall after being tucked away for too long. He was known for his unrelenting insistence on working his silver by hand, resulting in beautiful pieces of heavy silver and high-grade stones. In addition to concho belts, Kirk crafted gorgeous statement cuff bracelets with turquoise and red coral and some of the most striking blue lapis youve ever seen, as well as some rings, pendants, earrings, and even a few squash blossoms. As we mentioned, his work is highly collectible, not only because of its stunning beauty, but because sadly, there wont be any more made; Kirk was tragically killed in 2012.HIS DEATH:On September 17, 2012, Kirk was in an altercation in a parking lot with a young man whose truck had struck Kirks vehicle as the man was attempting to back into a parking spot. When the driver, who was intoxicated, tried to flee the scene, Kirk jumped onto the hood of the mans truck. When he was eventually unable to maintain his grip, Kirk was flung from the moving vehicle and suffered injuries which resulted in his death in an Albuquerque hospital a little while later. The driver did succeed in fleeing the scene, but eventually collided with another truck and a barrier on Interstate 25 and was apprehended after a violent struggle with police; he was found to have had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.16, twice the legal limit. Incredibly, the driver, who was 16 at the time, was only sentenced to 90 days in a treatment center and two years probation. As you might imagine, Kirks surviving family does not feel that justice was done in the wake of his death, but they are carrying on his legacy in a positive way despite the circumstances. He was a talented Navajo artist from Chinle, Arizona. Tommy learned the art of silversmithing from his mother and father, Martha and Gene Jackson. Tommy is known for his work in both gold and silver. He was accomplished in a wide range of jewelry styles, from traditional to contemporary inlay. He won numerous awards for his beautiful and unique jewelry from the Heard Museum Show in Phoenix, Santa Fe Indian Market and The Museum of Northern Arizona, to name a few. Tommy was a graduate of the University of Arizona with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. For several years, he taught at Wide Ruins Community School. He taught Navajo children Navajo reading, writing, history and culture, and arts and crafts. Many of his former students are now established jewelers themselves. Tommy was married to a wonderful woman named Marie Jackson, who is also a jeweler. Together they had seven children and lived in Ganado, Arizona. In recent years he worked on jewelry full-time with his children and wife, Marie. “Marie and I give a lot of credit to the Lord for blessing our hands and giving us talent to make unique and beautiful jewelry,” said Tommy.
