6.75" Navajo Silver - Turquoise and opal bracelet
6.75" Navajo Silver - Turquoise and opal bracelet. Kind of a strange and unusual bracelet from the second quarter of the 20th century. There are carved recesses in the beautiful natural turquoise stones that I believe have been there since the bracelet was made. I have my suspicions that maybe they had something other than irregular chunks of opals glued in. I don't know as this bracelet is likely older than me by about 10 years or more. Dennis & Nancy Edaakie Zuni Cardinal inlaid sterling earrings
Dennis & Nancy Edaakie Zuni Cardinal inlaid sterling earrings 2.25" long with hooks x 5/8" wide. 13.5 grams total.Dennis and Nancy Edaakie started making jewelry in 1965 and have become known for finely detailed bird imagery on pieces made in the overlay inlay technique. Dennis’s father, Merle Edaakie, did stonework for trader C. G. Wallace. In 1970, at the urging of traders Ruth and Leon Ingram, Dennis and Nancy first produced inlay jewelry bearing images of birds. Overlay inlay is similar to Hopi overlay. In both methods, one piece of silver with a cut-out pattern is overlaid on another piece of the same size and shape. In the Hopi technique the bottom layer is darkened so that the cut-out areas contrast with the polished silver of the top layer. In the Zuni overlay inlay technique, mosaic stonework fills the blanks, forming a brilliantly colored counterpoint to the monochromatic silver. Beginning in the late 1970s, Dennis and Nancy further innovated on the overlay technique through the use of gold, as opposed to silver.Dennis has been given credit for development of the spinner pendant, another design he developed at the urging of the Ingrams. This form of pendant can be reversed while remaining on the wearer’s neck. Dennis first produced flat spinner pendants, but he now also makes a domed version.Nancy started out doing some of the inlay details on Dennis’s work and now does all of the inlay. Dennis has always done the silverwork on their pieces. They originally used a parrot beak stamp as their hallmark, since Dennis is of the parrot clan. Later, they used DENNIS E., and, subsequent to that, DENNIS AND NANCY EDAAKIE. Dennis and Nancy Edaakie’s sons, Myron, Sanford, Derrick and Dale, also make overlay inlay jewelry.Unfortunately, Dennis passed away in early 2008.Their sterling silver and genuine gemstone inlay bird pins and pendants are some of the most sought after pieces in Native American Indian jewelry. Much of their jewelry is made from sterling silver, turquoise, jet, mother of pearl, abalone, and coral. The Edaakie’s pieces are well known as being excellently hand-crafted; from their silver and gold technique to their impeccable inlay. They have passed the torch to their sons, who are trying to carry on their parents traditions. Dennis passed away close to Memorial Day of 2008, and Nancy is no longer producing jewelry. Their work will truly be appreciated by the world over for years to come! All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. 6 3/8" Wayne Muskett Navajo Sterling and spiny oyster inlay braceletWAYNE MUSKETT was born in Gallup, NM, a Navajo Reservation border town of trading posts and tourists--a mosaic of different peoples and cultures. Wayne's jewelry echoes his colorful hometown. He creates inlay bracelets set with the bright stones of earth: green malachite, blood-red coral, deep blue lapis and the dusty blue of denim lapis, and, of course, high grade turquoise.Wayne doesn't restrict his work to only sterling silver. He also creates stunning gold jewelry with the same expert eye to color. "I really enjoy working with gold. There's a different vibrancy in the colors."Wayne comes from a family of craftsmen. His father creates more traditional pieces, while his brother also makes inlay jewelry. His father's influence is apparent in Wayne's pendants--bear pendants, their rounded backs like the sacred es honoring the most powerful and wise creature. Wayne sometimes inlays these pendants on both sides, a pleasant surprise to the unsuspecting.Wayne's pieces promise to continue delivering unexpected delight to those who appreciate quality craftsmanship. All precious metals are tested and guaranteed, any Native American jewelry referred to as Silver or Sterling is guaranteed to be a minimum of 90% (coin) silver and possibly higher content. 7" Southwestern Modernist Sterling bracelet with freeform turquoise
7" Southwestern Modernist Sterling bracelet with freeform turquoise. Tested and guaranteed sterling, signed by the artisan with no purity markings. Fits up to a 7" wrist.Mike Bird-Romero is an accomplished jeweler known for his technical mastery, innovation, and respect for historical techniques and designs. Born in 1946 in San Juan Pueblo, his artistic interests were fostered in a household of creativity. His grandmother Luteria Atencio was a respected potter whose works are in the Smithsonian Institution. His mother Lorencita Bird was an accomplished and well-known Pueblo textile artist and educator. After learning some basic metal-working skills in junior high school, Mike began serious work with metals in the late 1960s, teaching himself from books on the topic and buying some old tools while making others. By the 1980s, Mike had emerged as a major figure in contemporary Native American jewelry making. Selecting only the best, most dramatic materials, Mike became known for bold, sculptural interpretations of traditional designs.Although he is largely a self-taught artist, Mike’s work has been influenced both by extensive research into historic Navajo and Pueblo jewelry and by observing great silversmiths who lived near his home including Mark Chee and Julian Lovato. Large Vintage Matl Sterling Turquoise Amethyst repousse birds pendant/pin
Large Matl Sterling Turquoise Amethyst repousse birds pendant/pin, 4" tall x 3
1/8" wide 47 grams. No damage.

MAT-MATILDE POULAT & RICARDO SALAS JEWELRY
Matl is the mark that appears on some of the most beautiful and unique jewelry
in Mexico.
Matilde Eugenia Poulat introduced MATL in 1934 and, since her death in 1960, her
designs and techniques have been carried on by her nephew, Ricardo Salas. For
sr. Salas, who can recite poetry in the language of the Aztecs, the mark matl,
has greater meaning in its reference to the Nahuatl or Aztec word for water,
atl.

As a young woman, Matilde Poulat studied painting at the prestigious San Carlos
academy of fine arts in Mexico city, she went on to teach painting classes at an
art school until her interest turned exclusively to silver. Matilde Poulat´s
designs for jewelry and figures were part of the new cultural vision among
Mexico’s intellectuals after the revolution in 1920s, artists were searching for
Mexican aesthetic, rejection European subjects in favor of the art of the
pre-conquest Indians and of the Mexican pueblos. Sra. Poulat found inspiration
in the mextec gold jewelry discovered in 1932 at Monte Alban. Her choice of
motifs the dove, flowers, and tiny bells are reminiscent of the whimsical
subjects of contemporary Mexican folk art.

Matilde Poulat received international recognition for her jewelry when she was
asked in 1941 to participate in an exhibit of Latin American silver at the pan
American union in Washington, D.C. as a result of increasing demand for matl
silver during world war ii , the number of silversmiths in the taller increased
to thirty-three. In 1950, Srta. Poulat and her nephew opened a showroom on the
first floor of her home, where she also had the workshop. Ricardo Salas recalls
that they made three thousand types of silver jewelry and one hundred different
pieces.

Ricardo Salas worked closely with his aunt from the time he was eleven years of
age. He says she recognized his artistic talent when she saw him do a play with
puppets he had made himself. Sr. Salas was sent to the San Carlos academy, where
he received the premio Diego Rivera. As a youth, he learned the techniques of
the silversmith and perfected the carving of "Off White", coral, turquoise, and
other stones used in the jewelry and figurines. From sr. Salas perspective, he
and his aunt collaborated so closely as designers, that there really cannot be a
comparison of their work.

In 1955, William Spratling wrote of Matilde Poulat: “she has continued to
produce some of the most charming native jewelry in Mexico, intensely her own.
Her jewelry has the same charm and delightful surface and colorful quality of
the old lacquer work of Uruapan. Spratling`s admiration for matl silver reflects
his recognition of their shared appreciation for Mexican native art. This mutual
inspiration led each of the two artists in different directions within the same
medium. The exuberance of matl silver resembles the interiors of the churches in
Puebla, like the chapel of Santa Maria Tonantzintla, where Indians covered the
interior of the dome with polychromed and gilded angels. In matl silver, the
introduction of color is accomplished with bits of coral, turquoise, and
amethyst quartz. The surfaces are decorated with applied wire and elaborated
with embossing and repousse of astounding complexity (pl.XXIII-1, XXIII-10).
Matilde Poulat and Ricardo Salas have been successful in incorporating the
artistic language of the Mixtecs into jewelry and silver figures with
imagination, drama, and with a style that is completely personal.
