Solid sterling silver with copper basket ring.After the success of the overlay designs made at the Hopi Guild many other silversmiths and shops incorporated overlay in their designs (see Overlay is Not Always Hopi Made). Navajo trader Dean Kirk opened his own trading post at Manuelito, New Mexico (between Gallup and the Arizona border) by January 1941. The silver work made in Dean’s shop was typically Navajo tourist type designs and hallmarked UITA22 (under the auspices of the United Indian Traders Association) until about 1951. That’s when Kirk designed a series of overlay pins to be made by Navajo smiths in his employ incorporating Hohokam and Mimbres designs. These designs proved to be very popular, as a 1958 newspaper advertisement for Enchanted Mesa in Albuquerque promoted “Dean Kirk’s Navajo Overlay Silver”. The overlay pieces made at Kirk’s shop were rarely hallmarked.However, one of the Navajo silversmiths who worked for Dean Kirk was Willie Yazzie, he made his own hallmark and used it on pieces he made in Kirk’s shop.Much of the following information was relayed to Alan Ferg (archivist and archaeologist at Arizona State Museum) by William P. (Willie) Yazzie, Jr, in February 2018. Yazzie was born at Chinle, Arizona in 1928. His son says he learned silverwork at Dean Kirk’s trading post in Manuelito in the early 1950s, and created his touchmark (or hallmark) no later than 1960, and after that time his pieces made at Dean Kirk’s would have included his gourd dipper hallmark. His designs often incorporated animal figures such as roadrunners or Navajo designs including Yeis and Father Sky. He never added “tamp work,” or a textured pattern to the background designs.In 1960 Ansel Hall, concessionaire at Mesa Verde National Park, was looking for a silversmith to demonstrate at the park during the summers months, Dean Kirk recommended Willie Yazzie and he was hired by Hall. Willie worked at Mesa Verde in the summers from 1960 to 1983, except for 1965 when he was sick. Yazzie created a special hallmark to denote pieces he made at Mesa Verde. The mark depicts Square Tower House, a ruin within the park, and was included with his gourd dipper mark during the summers of 1960-1964 and 1966-1983.Marked or unmarked as shown in the pics. These talented silversmiths have been creating traditional Navajo jewelry since 1969. They came from families well known for their jewelry making. Wilson’s father, Luke, taught John Adair, author of “Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths” how to make sand cast jewelry. He worked for many years with Mike and Dean Kirk, at the famous Kirk Brothers Trading Company in Gallup, New Mexico.Carol’s parents, Angela and Allen Chee were both silversmiths who worked by C.G. Wallace, the famous jewelry trader from Zuni, New Mexico.The Begays began their career making sandcast jewelry, a traditional type of Navajo jewelry that requires the artist to make carvings in Tufa stone to make forms to shape molten silver. They first worked for Tobe Tupen, a well known trader in Gallup. Carol remembers that silver was only $1.25 an ounce when they started.Today they are independent artists whose work is widely sought after and admired. Wilson concentrates on the casting and building the foundations of the jewelry and Carol sets the stones and does the finishing work. They work together to design their jewelry.Traditional sandcast silver jewelry is a unique Navajo art form. The process, although it sounds simple, requires careful discipline and years of practice to obtain quality results.The artist takes two pieces of pumice stone and grinds them together to create two flat surfaces. Then the design is carved into one of the two pumice stones. An opening is carved from the design to the top and bottom of the stone. The two pieces of stone are then tied together so that the carved design is between the two flat areas. Silver is then melted in a crucible, and when it reaches the proper molten form, it is poured into the opening on the top of the design. If it is the proper temperature, it flows through to the bottom where it cools and hardens, filling the design space. After cooling, the stones are separated, the casting removed and the protrusions on the top and bottom are cut off. The silver is then filed smooth and shaped.If stones are to be set on the piece, the artist builds a silver bezel to hold the stone and then solders it to the piece of jewelry. Sawdust is put in the bottom of the bezel to cushion the stone and the bezel is tightened. The piece is then polished to the shine the artist likes.Wilson Begay of Gallup is the acknowledged master of the art of sandcast jewelry. Luke Begay, Wilson's grandfather, demonstrated this skill to John Adair in the early 1930's when Adair was conducting a survey of native silversmiths of the Smithsonian. Luke taught the skill to Wilson as a young man. Today, in his 60's, Wilson continues to make sandcast jewelry in his Gallup home. His wife, Carol, chooses the stones to be used and sets them in bezels. The Begays have three daughters, Nichole, Yvonne and Bonnie, are continuing the family tradition.Wilson's stamped signature is a flat brimmed Navajo hat with his initials under it. His signature is one of the most recognized in Indian jewelry. Hallmarked with artists hallmarks and no other markings. Bennett Kagenveama was an extraordinarily talented Hopi overlay silversmith, born in Shungopavi, Hopi Second Mesa Arizona. His parents, Richard and Gladys Kagenveama, were very prominent artists. His mother, Gladys is considered one of the top Hopi coil basket weavers. Bennetts jewelry exudes a level of intricate detail not seen in other Hopi overlay jewelry. He created his jewelry by overlaying multiple layers of silver and finished with delicate oxidation and intricate hand texturing. This interesting contrast in the textures of his silverwork is what really makes his work stand out. Bennett specialized in the Kachina designs, including dance scenes with kivas and pueblos in the background. Bennett passed away in 2025. Beyond being a wonderful artist, he was a friend who we will greatly miss. Bennett was a soft spoken, humble, and very kind man. He was very well thought of by his peers and his work garnered praise from collectors all over the world.

The shadows play tricks in these pictures, so please look at all of them. “I construct each piece with sheet and wire first. My inspiration for design comes from many sources. The purple hues and angular shapes of the desert and mountains, a Frank Lloyd Wright building, petroglyphs, Mibres pottery, or the pyramids of Mexico are all examples of what may influence my art,” says Danny Romero. Danny, who initially set out to become a medical doctor, began experimenting with jewelry design as a hobby. He quickly discovered he had a natural talent and decided to pursue jewelry making as a career. He never regretted his choice. Danny, who was Yaqui, acknowledged that many of his sterling silver cast pieces were inspired by prehistoric petroglyph carvings and Hispanic religious symbols. Danny was also a recognized master of intricate inlay design. Working in both silver, 14k and 18k gold, he would often include up to 1,500 individually cut pieces of precious and semi-precious stones in his one-of-a-kind pieces. Don uses the high-quality sterling silver, beautiful turquoise and a variety of learned techniques to frequently create. This artform use to be very popular and is one of the earliest forms of Navajo silversmithing. Its interesting that his last name "Platero" means "silversmith" in Spanish. This might suggest that this award winning third-generation jeweler‘s artistic roots might very well extend beyond his grandparents‘ time to the era of Spanish occupation of New Mexico. The appropriateness of the surname is seen in every meticulous detail of Don Plateros silverwork. The winner of numerous awards, including a first-place ribbon at the Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial, Don Platero has been working as a silversmith since he was ten years old. He learned the craft from his father, Dan Platero. During school summers, his father would encourage him to assist in polishing and finishing pieces. Don would ask him questions of different techniques that were used from school and techniques that he had never seen before while ‘secretly working on his own work. During his sophomore year in high school there was a class with a last slot for the “Navajo Silversmith course. Fortunately, the slot became his. During high school he entered the Gallup Indian Ceremonial and that brought the first 1st place ribbon and cash award. This was the first of many awards.

He was one of ten children and his mother supported them entirely by weaving Navajo Rugs. When he was young, Pete met the acclaimed Navajo silversmith Thomas Curtis, who adopted him as a son and taught Pete, and his daughter Jennifer, how to silversmith. Pete’s other mentor was another great Navajo silversmith, Al Joe. Pete puts so much care into all his pieces and has such a variety of styles, including repoussé. Er hatte immer mit Schmuck und anderen Dingen experimentiert handwerkliches Können, erhielt aber erst Anerkennung, als er sich voll und ganz seiner Kunst widmete. Er wuchs in Hopi auf, sprach die Hopi-Sprache und nahm teil in der Katsina-Gesellschaft. Im Alter von neun Jahren begann Monongye eine Lehre bei seinem Onkel, dem Silberschmied- und Malermeister Gene Pooyama. „Er brachte mir bei, wie man nach der Hopi-Art lebt“, erinnert sich Monongye. Monongye besuchte Reservatschulen und nahm voll am religiösen und gesellschaftlichen Leben der Hopi teil. Nach seinem Dienst als Fallschirmjäger im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde Monongye Kachina-Maler und arbeitete gelegentlich für den Händler Roman Hubbell und die Fred Harvey Company. Während des Koreakrieges meldete sich Monongye erneut und arbeitete später in der Strafverfolgung für das Bureau of Indian Affairs, während er weiterhin Silberschmuck malte und herstellte. Nachdem Monongye in den frühen 1960er-Jahren seinen Job zugunsten der Schmuckherstellung aufgegeben hatte, wurde er schnell als innovativer Designer und Techniker anerkannt, der sich in die „neue indische Kunst“ vertiefte und traditionelle Techniken und Motive nutzte, um ein zeitgenössisches Schmuckstück zu schaffen neues Aussehen. Er war vor allem für sein gegossenes Silber bekannt, das mit Steinen besetzt war, die oft von seinem Freund Lee Yazzie und später von seinem Sohn Jesse geschliffen wurden. Monongye lehrte seine Kunst an verschiedenen Schulen und Werkstätten und hielt zahlreiche Vorträge über zeitgenössisches Design der Ureinwohner. Er gewann viele Auszeichnungen bei Ausstellungen und Wettbewerben und sein Schmuck erscheint in Museumssammlungen wie dem Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff und dem Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe.
